Violinist Adolf Busch, who had a thriving<br />
career in Europe as a soloist <strong>and</strong> chamber music<br />
artist, was one of the few non-Jewish musicians<br />
who spoke out against Hitler. He had left his native<br />
Germany for Switzerl<strong>and</strong> in 1927, <strong>and</strong> later, with the<br />
outbreak of World War II, moved <strong>to</strong> the United States.<br />
He eventually settled in Vermont w<strong>here</strong>, <strong>to</strong>gether with<br />
his son-in-law Rudolf Serkin, his brother Herman<br />
Busch, <strong>and</strong> the great French flutist Marcel Moyse—<br />
<strong>and</strong> Moyse’s son Louis, <strong>and</strong> daughter-in-law Blanche—<br />
Busch founded the <strong>Marlboro</strong> <strong>Music</strong> School & Festival<br />
in 1951.<br />

a Dream is BOrn<br />
It was his dream <strong>to</strong> create a summer musical community<br />
w<strong>here</strong> artists—the established <strong>and</strong> the aspiring—<br />
could come <strong>to</strong>gether, away from the pressures of their<br />
normal professional lives, <strong>to</strong> exchange ideas, explore<br />
music <strong>to</strong>gether, <strong>and</strong> share meals <strong>and</strong> life experiences as<br />
a large musical family. Busch died the following year,<br />
but Serkin, who served as Artistic Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>and</strong> guiding<br />
spirit until his death in 1991, realized that dream <strong>and</strong><br />
created the st<strong>and</strong>ards, structure, <strong>and</strong> environment that<br />
remain his legacy.<br />
<strong>Marlboro</strong> continues <strong>to</strong> thrive under the leadership<br />
of Mitsuko Uchida <strong>and</strong> Richard Goode, Co-Artistic<br />
Direc<strong>to</strong>rs for the last 12 years, remaining true <strong>to</strong><br />
its core ideals while incorporating their fresh ideas<br />
<strong>and</strong> inspiration.
