Creating confidence in adult learners at<br />

AN EVENING for celebrating<br />
newly learned skills was all about<br />
face-to-face interaction.<br />
The Risingholme Community<br />
Centre, based in Opawa, hosted a<br />
social evening in honour of their<br />
adult learners with around 100<br />
people attending.<br />

Lenore Wright said it was a<br />
beautiful evening with the learners<br />
showing off their hard work.<br />
Risingholme’s adult learners<br />
programme is for anyone over<br />
the age of 16 who wants to learn<br />
a new skill and meet people.<br />
They offer 389 courses in 70<br />
subjects, from sewing and pottery<br />
to languages and writing,<br />
even upcycling furniture.<br />
The programme usually sees<br />
800 learners enrolled per term.<br />
Each term runs for eight weeks,<br />
however due to Covid the latest<br />
term ran for six weeks but still<br />
saw nearly 700 learners enrolled.<br />
Wright said Risingholme was<br />
always open to setting up new<br />
courses if someone had a skill<br />
they would like to develop.<br />
Organisers were also exploring<br />
branching out into other areas<br />
like tech classes, focusing on<br />
coding and business analysis.<br />
Wright said the programme<br />
was all about helping people gain<br />
confidence with learning in a<br />
social environment.<br />
“There’s a social benefit of<br />
being together and having that<br />
sense of community.” she said.<br />
