« parra news Tuesday, December 14, 2021 Historical Society win IMAGinE award NICOLA BARTON Parramatta & District Historical Society have been recognised for their innovation and resilience during COVID-19 at the 2021 IMAGinE awards. The Society developed a website for the Hambledon Cottage Museum, which included a 360-degree virtual reality tour, in collaboration with Western Sydney University tourism students, and was funded by a COVID-19 Resilience Grant from City of Parramatta Council. The website has improved the appeal of the museum by providing online access to domestic and international visitors, and has significantly enhanced the Society’s ability to promote Hambledon Cottage. The Historical Society won the ‘Innovation & Resilience – Projects With A Budget of $10,000 or Less’ section for their efforts developing the website and virtual reality tour. There were six other entrants including the Australian Design Centre, Grafton Regional Gallery, Southern Highlands Artisans Collective, Sydney Living Museums, Tamworth Regional Gallery and Tweed Regional Museum. The Innovation and Resilience Award recognises the outstanding efforts of museums and galleries during hardship and celebrates excellence and innovation in exhibition practice, resiliencebuilding projects and engagement programs. The IMAGinE awards aim to celebrate all institutions and pays homage to those organisations run by volunteers, with limited budgets and minimal resources. Museums & Galleries of NSW CEO Brett Adlington said IMAGinE brings people together and creates a sense of achievement and comradery as a sector. “In these difficult times cross organisational celebration is more important than ever and even though we were unable to hold the awards in person there is still LOCAL NEWS a really strong sense of community surrounding the awards,” he said. “It is easy to fall into silos in our day to day but it’s important to recognise the commonality of our goals and to work together and that is something that I’m reminded of when looking at the diversity, but also shared experiences of the nominees whether they be museums, artist run spaces, regional galleries, historical societies, Aboriginal Cultural Centres or large cultural institutions. “This year I was really struck by the quality of the exhibitions and programs that museums and galleries are delivering and how they are continuing to serve their communities despite the limitations of their resources, in particular, the incredible work by volunteers and staff in smaller museums, galleries and aboriginal cultural centres is inspirational.” Hambledon Cottage Museum is currently open for guided tours on weekends from 11am to 3pm.
