Welcome this Christmastide
Dear saints,
Many blessings to you this Christmas time! What a gift it is to be able to celebrate the birth
of Jesus in church together again this Christmas Eve. The two years that have passed since
we were last worshipping together at Christmas have been filled with challenge and loss,
yet they have also held reminders for us that in the final analysis God’s light shines no
matter how thick the darkness. I pray that you will know that light in your life.
As we hear once more the message of the angels and sing those deeply loved
Christmas carols, I invite you to enter into the story trusting that the God
who chose to dwell with us in the Christ-child, chooses to dwell with us now.
Drink deeply of this well of life this night. Know the grace that calls you
home. And receive the gift of love made known to us in the pure light
of a newborn child. Christ the Savior is born, this night, for you.
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
The tradition of Nine Lessons and Carols was popularized by King’s College in Cambridge,
England and began in 1918. This service includes the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah,
and the birth of Jesus as told in nine scripture readings, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols
and anthems led by the All Saints’ Schola, our chamber choir.
1. Once in royal David’s city
stood a lowly cattle shed,
where a mother laid her baby
in a manger for his bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.
2. He came down to earth from heaven,
who is God and Lord of all,
and his shelter was a stable,
and his cradle was a stall;
with the poor, the scorned, the lowly
lived on earth our Savior holy.
3. For he is our lifelong pattern;
daily, when on earth he grew;
he was tempted, scorned, rejected,
tears and smiles like us he knew.
Thus he feels for all our sadness,
and he shares in all our gladness.
4. And our eyes at last shall see him,
through his own redeeming love;
for that child who seemed so helpless
is our Lord in heaven above;
and he leads his children on
to the place where he is gone.
5. Not in that poor lowly stable,
with the oxen standing by,
we shall see him; but in heaven,
set at God’s right hand on high;
where like stars his children crowned
all in white shall wait around.
Bidding Prayer |
Beloved in Christ, be it this Christmas Eve
our care and delight to prepare ourselves to
hear again the message of the angels; in heart
and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see
this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe
lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in
Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes
of God from the first days of our disobedience
unto the glorious Redemption brought us by
this Holy Child; and let us make this Church
glad with our carols of praise: But first let us
pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace
and goodwill over all the earth; for unity and
concord within the Church he came to build,
and especially this country and this city.
And because this of all things would rejoice
his heart, let us at this time remember in his
name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the
hungry and the oppressed; the sick in body
and in mind and them that mourn; the lonely
and the unloved. Lastly let us remember before
God all those who rejoice with us, but upon
another shore and in a greater light, that multitude
which no one can number, whose hope
was in the Word made flesh, and with whom,
in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.
These prayers and praises let us humbly offer
up to the throne of heaven, in the words which
Christ himself hath taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
And lead us not into temptation,
The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent
by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s
name was Mary. And he came to her and said,
“Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
But she was much perplexed by his words and
pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God. And now,
you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you will name him Jesus. He will
be great, and will be called the Son of the Most
“How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The
angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come
upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; therefore the child to be born
Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord;
let it be with me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.
“What sweeter music can we bring?” John Rutter (b. 1945)
What sweeter music can we bring,
Than a carol, for to sing
The birth of this our heavenly King?
Awake the voice! Awake the string!
Dark and dull night, fly hence away,
And give the honour to this day,
That sees December turned to May.
Why does the chilling Winter’s morn
Smile, like a field beset with corn?
Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn,
Thus, on the sudden? Come and see
The cause, why things thus fragrant be:
‘Tis He is born, whose quick’ning birth
Gives life and lustre, public mirth,
To heaven, and the under-earth.
Words: Robert Herrick (1591–1674)
We see Him come, and know Him ours,
Who, with His sunshine, and His showers,
Turns all the patient ground to flowers.
The darling of the world is come,
And fit it is, we find a room
To welcome Him. The nobler part
Of all the house here, is the heart,
Which we will give Him; and bequeath
This holly, and this ivy wreath,
To do Him honour; who’s our King,
And Lord of all this reveling.
What sweeter music can we bring,
Than a carol for to sing
The birth of this our heavenly King?
The Seventh Lesson | Luke 2:8–16
The shepherds go to the manger.
In that region there were shepherds living
in the fields, keeping watch over their flock
by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood
before them, and the glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they were terrified. But the
angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—
I am bringing you good news of great joy for all
the people: to you is born this day in the city of
David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
This will be a sign for you: you will find a child
angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising
God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest
heaven, and on earth peace among those whom
he favors!” When the angels had left them and
gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see
this thing that has taken place, which the Lord
has made known to us.” So they went with
haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the
The Eighth Lesson | Matthew 2:1–12
The wise men are led by the star to Jesus.
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born
in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East
came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child
who has been born king of the Jews? For we
observed his star at its rising, and have come
to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard
this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with
him; and calling together all the chief priests
and scribes of the people, he inquired of them
where the Messiah was to be born. They told
him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been
written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem,
in the land of Judah, are by no means least
among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall
come a ruler who is to shepherd my people
Israel.’” Then Herod secretly called for the wise
men and learned from them the exact time
when the star had appeared. Then he sent them
3. “Fear not, then,” said the angel,
“Let nothing you affright;
this day is born a Savior
of a pure virgin bright,
to free all those who trust in him
from Satan’s power and might.”
to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently
for the child; and when you have found him,
bring me word so that I may also go and pay
him homage.”
When they had heard the king, they set out;
and there, ahead of them, went the star that
they had seen at its rising, until it stopped
over the place where the child was. When
they saw that the star had stopped, they were
overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house,
they saw the child with Mary his mother; and
they knelt down and paid him homage. Then,
opening their treasure chests, they offered him
gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And
having been warned in a dream not to return
to Herod, they left for their own country by
another road.
The Ninth Lesson | John 1:1–14
The Rev. Dr. Simon J. Mainwaring
St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word true light, which enlightens everyone,
was with God, and the Word was God. He was was coming into the world. He was in the
in the beginning with God. All things came world, and the world came into being through
into being through him, and without him not him; yet the world did not know him. He came
one thing came into being. What has come to what was his own, and his own people did
into being in him was life, and the life was the not accept him. But to all who received him,
light of all people.
who believed in his name, he gave power to
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness
become children of God, who were born, not
did not overcome it. There was a man sent of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will
from God, whose name was John. He came as a of man, but of God. And the Word became
witness to testify to the light, so that all might flesh and lived among us, and we have seen
believe through him. He himself was not the his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full
light, but he came to testify to the light. The of grace and truth.
Reader
Thanks be to God.
Later that night their heads are filled
with a dream-drenched holy ray.
“Do not return to Herod the king,
Go back another way.”
“That I may come and worship him.”
And so our Christ is saved from death,
his mission to complete;
to change the world by selfless love,
Satan’s legions to beat.
The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent
by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David. Her name was
Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings,
favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was
much perplexed by his words and pondered
what sort of greeting this might be. The angel
said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you
have found favor with God. And now, you will
conceive in your womb and bear a son, and
you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and
In those days a decree went out from
The Fourth Lesson | Luke 2:8–14
The angels bring good news.
In that region there were shepherds living
in the fields, keeping watch over their flock
by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood
before them, and the glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they were terrified. But the
angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see –
I am bringing you good news of great joy for all
the people: to you is born this day in the city
This will be a sign for you: you will find a child
wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”
And suddenly there was with the angel
a multitude of the heavenly host, praising
God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest
heaven, and on earth peace among those whom
he favors!”
“In the bleak mid-winter” Harold Darke (1888–1976)
(“The Sleeping Christ-Child”)
In the bleak mid-winter frosty wind made moan; earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak mid-winter long ago. Our God,
heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain, heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes
to reign: In the bleak mid-winter a stable-place sufficed the Lord God Almighty – Jesus Christ.
Enough for him, whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful
of hay; enough for him, whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore.
What can I give Him, poor as I am? – If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; if I were
a wise man I would do my part, – Yet what I can I give Him, – give my heart.
The people stand as the bell tolls.
The Word of God
The Celebrant, standing between two torchbearers at the back of the nave,
reads from the Gospel of John 1:1—5; 10—14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God. He was
in the beginning with God. All things came
into being through him, and without him not
one thing came into being. What has come into
being in him was life, and the life was the light
of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness
did not overcome it. He was in the world,
and the world came into being through him;
“O come, all ye faithful” Adeste fideles
1. O come, all ye faithful,
joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
come, and behold him,
born the King of angels;
Refrain:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.
2. God from God,
Light from Light eternal,
lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
only-begotten
Son of the Father;
Refrain
yet the world did not know him. He came
to what was his own, and his own people did
not accept him. But to all who received him,
who believed in his name, he gave power to
become children of God, who were born, not
of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will
of man, but of God. And the Word became
flesh and lived among us, and we have seen
his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,
full of grace and truth.
3. Sing, choirs of angels,
sing in exultation,
sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
glory to God,
glory in the highest;
The First Lesson | Isaiah 9:2–7
The people who walked in darkness have seen
a great light; those who lived in a land of deep
darkness— on them light has shined. You have
multiplied the nation, you have increased its
joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the
For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across
have broken as on the day of Midian. For all
the boots of the tramping warriors and all
the garments rolled in blood shall be burned
The Gospel | Luke 2:1–20
Gospeler
People
The holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
In those days a decree went out from Emperor
Augustus that all the world should be registered.
This was the first registration and was
taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
All went to their own towns to be registered.
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth
in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called
Bethlehem, because he was descended from
the house and family of David. He went to be
registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged
and who was expecting a child. While they
were there, the time came for her to deliver
her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn
son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and
laid him in a manger, because there was no
place for them in the inn.
In that region there were shepherds living
in the fields, keeping watch over their flock
by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood
before them, and the glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they were terrified. But the
angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see –
I am bringing you good news of great joy
for all the people: to you is born this day in
the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,
the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will
find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and
lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was
with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God
in the highest heaven, and on earth peace
among those whom he favors!” When the
angels had left them and gone into heaven,
the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go
now to Bethlehem and see this thing that
has taken place, which the Lord has made
known to us.” So they went with haste and
found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying
in the manger. When they saw this, they made
known what had been told them about this
child; and all who heard it were amazed at what
the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured
all these words and pondered them in her
heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and
praising God for all they had heard and seen,
as it had been told them.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Sanctus | Communion Service in A Minor Harold Darke (1888–1976)
Sung by the choir.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts:
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The Celebrant continues
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us
in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets;
and above all in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. For in these last days you sent Jesus to be
incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Christ, you have
delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In Christ, you have brought us
out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given
thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body,
which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O God,
Celebrant and People
We remember Christ’s death,
We proclaim Christ’s resurrection,
We await Christ’s coming in glory;
The Celebrant continues
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Savior of all; presenting to you,
from your creation, this bread. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these
gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ. Unite us in the sacrifice of Jesus
Christ, through whom we are acceptable to you, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness
of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country
where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your children; through Jesus
Christ our Savior, the firstborn of all creation, the head
of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory
is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN.
“O holy night” Adolphe Adam (1803–1856)
arr. James Biery
O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill
of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees!
O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born;
O night divine, O night, O night Divine.
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, with glowing hearts by his cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, here come the wise men from the Orient land. The King
of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; in all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need,
to our weaknesses no stranger, behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Behold your King,
before him lowly bend!
Truly he taught us to love one another; his law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall
he break for the slave is our brother; and in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns
of joy in grateful chorus raise we, let all within us praise his holy name. Christ is the Lord!
O praise his Name forever, his power and glory evermore proclaim.
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
Awake the voice! Awake the string!
Dark and dull night, fly hence away,
And give the honour to this day,
Why does the chilling Winter’s morn
Smile, like a field beset with corn?
Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn,
Thus, on the sudden? Come and see
Words: Robert Herrick (1591–1674)
We see Him come, and know Him ours,
Who, with His sunshine, and His showers,
Turns all the patient ground to flowers.
The darling of the world is come,
To welcome Him. The nobler part
Of all the house here, is the heart,
Which we will give Him; and bequeath
This holly, and this ivy wreath,
To do Him honour; who’s our King,
And Lord of all this reveling.
What sweeter music can we bring,
Than a carol for to sing
Sundays, 10:15–11:05 a.m. in Ellis Hall
In January 2022, we will welcome back to the block three beloved clergy leaders who have served at All Saints’:
On Sundays at 10:20 a.m. in Ellis Hall, each of these leaders will join in conversation with our rector, Simon
Mainwaring, as we begin our work of casting a vision for the future of our mission and ministries at All Saints’.
