Whileparacetamol can be easily obtainedfrom over-the-counter (OTC)pharmacies, remember to alwaysconsult your doctor or pharmacistfor the correct dose for yourchildren’s age and weight. Avoidgiving aspirin to your childrenas it has been linked to seriouscomplications in children.• Relieving stuffiness. Runnynose and nose block is by far themost distressing symptoms to bothchildren and parents. Childrenwill appear to be uneasy or throwtantrums as they struggle to breathand this in turn leads to increasedanxiety in parents. Over-the-countersaline drops and sprays can help toloosen secretion followed by clearingit using bulb syringe or nasalaspirator. Doing this can providechildren with temporary relief andallows them to rest and sleep.• Rest. Our body works very hardtrying to fight off infections. Hence,getting adequate rest is importantto allow our body to heal. Byapplying the above-mentionedremedies, it gives our children anopportunity to sleep and rest.The followings are things that parentsSHOULD NOT be doing at home:• Giving cough and coldmedications from OTC pharmacy.These medications includedecongestants, antihistamines andcough remedies. While these arecommonly used in bigger childrenand adults, they pose a safety riskto younger children such as allergicreactions, breathing and sleepingproblems as well as causing themto hear and see things that arenot really there (hallucinations).These medications should only beprescribed by the doctor after carefulevaluation and consideration.• Giving your children coughsweets or lozenges. While theseremedies help with soothing soreor itchy throat that causes cough,they are also a potential hazard forchoking in young children.While most coughs and colds recoverwithout complications, sometimesa more serious disease can developfrom what seemed to be a mild viralinfection initially. For example, a chest/lung infection (pneumonia), a middleear infection (otitis media) and evena brain infection (meningitis). Thefollowing are the red flags symptomsthat parents need to look out for in anunwell child:• Breathing difficulties ornoisy breathing• Unable to swallow or droolingof saliva• Drowsiness/change in behaviour in abigger child• Unusual irritability or persistentcrying in a baby• Persistent high fever (> 38°C)• A rash• Intense headache, ear pain,ear discharge• Swollen glands• Seizure• Any symptoms that you cannotexplain• Any recent contact with individualswith suspected or confirmedCOVID-19 infectionAs mild as a cough and cold can be,the experience is traumatizing tochildren as well as the parents. In orderto prevent catching and spreading ofthe virus, it is always wise to avoidcrowded places and people who are orappear sick, wear a mask if you needto go to crowded areas. Frequent andproper hand washing especially aftertouching objects and surfaces is alsorecommended.
