> Lemon and Lime gains<br />

international recognition<br />

Fine & Country’s home staging partner, Lemon and Lime,<br />

has been awarded two prestigious international awards.<br />

The Lemon and Lime team won the award for the best Home<br />

Staging Transformation Project in 2021 at the International<br />

Home Staging Awards for their staging of a property called<br />

Hardwick Lodge. The founder of the company, Elaine<br />

Penhaul, said: “We are thrilled to have won such a prestigious<br />

international award. The team identified the value home<br />

staging would bring to the property and made the most of<br />

the opportunity by transforming the conservatory into a<br />

drawing room, providing an additional reception room with<br />

entertaining space. The new conservatory really added<br />

a wow factor to the home and enhanced its appeal to<br />

potential buyers.”<br />

Having previously been on the market for more than three<br />

years, the home was unoccupied and gained little interest.<br />

> Thailand luring investors<br />

with long-term visas<br />

According to Sean Barrett, Managing Director of Fine & Country<br />

Thailand, the country is aiming to lure up to one million wealthy<br />

residents by offering long-term visas to those who invest<br />

between $250,000 and $500,000 in property or government<br />

bonds. The visa scheme was unveiled by Prime Minister Prayuth<br />

Chan-ocha’s cabinet in September and subject to legal changes,<br />

will target affluent global citizens, wealthy pensioners, digital<br />

nomads working remotely and skilled professionals.<br />

To qualify for the 10-year visa, which includes family members,<br />

the Thai Government said wealthy global citizens would have to<br />

invest at least $500,000 in bonds or real estate and prove they<br />

had a minimum income of $80,000 per year. Retirees will need to<br />

invest at least $250,000 and earn a minimum of $40,000 a year.<br />

The plan is to offer the measures for an initial five-year trial<br />

period starting in 2022.<br />

The acquisition of well-known Tavira estate agency Manor<br />

Properties sees Fine & Country Tavira move to a prime city-centre<br />

location. Manor Properties, an estate agency established in<br />

2014, has been rebranded as a Fine & Country office, replacing<br />

the company’s office in nearby Santa Luzia. Fine & Country<br />

Tavira is managed by estate agents David Holder and<br />

Emmanuelle Deschamps.<br />

“This is an exciting development for our company,” said Holder.<br />

“We launched Fine & Country Tavira in 2015 and our office on<br />

the harbour front in Santa Luzia served us well, but we needed<br />

on A Place in the Sun<br />

Christopher Hara, Managing Director of Fine & Country Costa Blanca<br />

North, was recently interviewed by presenter Jean Johansson for an<br />

episode of A Place in the Sun, due to be aired in the first quarter of 2022.<br />

Chris took Jean and her crew to a fabulous Fine & Country property on<br />

the market for 2,000,000€. The property is located in a highly soughtafter<br />

area, renowned for its exclusive luxury properties and locally<br />

known as “The Beverly Hills of Javea”.<br />

The researchers for the show approached Chris for a coastal feature<br />

Tufted sand dunes, woodland walks, a soft golden<br />

stretch of beach, and the rolling royal golf course,<br />

all conspire to make Dornoch a pocket of peace and<br />

calm in our otherwise busy lives. This coastal town in the<br />

Highlands of Scotland, nestled by the sea in the county<br />

of Sutherland, is a four-hour drive from Edinburgh – if<br />

you’re travelling up here from anywhere else, a stopover<br />

is recommended to make it a little more leisurely. I stayed<br />

the night at The Dunstane Houses in Edinburgh, a Victorian<br />

villa that was once a private residence and still feels like<br />

a home, but is now a luxury boutique hotel. The hotel has<br />

just 17 rooms, and if you choose the Ronaldsay Suite, you’ll<br />

be treated to a ground-floor room with a freestanding<br />

in-room bath that basks in the original bay window. For<br />

dinner, head into town to Noto, where the stripped-back<br />

rustic menu and décor puts simple goodness at the heart<br />

of the dining experience.<br />

Then it’s onwards. The drive up to Dornoch is a dreamscape<br />

of sweeping land that expertly introduces you to what is<br />

to come. Bridge after bridge carry you safely over rivers<br />

and firths, until the sea opens out before you and you have<br />

arrived at beautiful Dornoch. The historic town has a small<br />

fairy-tale castle that was built around 1500 and was set on<br />

fire in 1570 amid a bitter feud between the McKays and the<br />

Murrays. It was soon restored and, following many years<br />

as a castle, it was bought by a private investor and became<br />

a hotel in 1947. Naturally, the town has a well-stocked<br />

whisky shop, the Carnegie Whisky Cellars, where in<br />

non-Covid-restriction times you can indulge in some<br />

whisky tasting. The staff here are knowledgeable and<br />

helpful and will advise you in choosing the right whisky<br />

for your tastes.<br />

As you walk from the town it’s a matter of mere minutes<br />

to the golf course and the beach. On the way, you’ll<br />

pass a pretty church and the hotel Links House, where I<br />

stayed. Links House is the old church manse house that<br />

was built in 1843. It was bought by Todd Warnock, an<br />

American visiting the area to play golf, in 2005, and the<br />

transformation from private manor house to hotel began.<br />

Now spread over three properties, following renovations<br />

and the building of a whole new wing beside the church,<br />

visitors have the choice of luxury accommodation in<br />

the shape of deluxe hotel rooms, luxury suites and<br />

bespoke apartments.<br />

At the top of the road is the Royal Dornoch Golf Club,<br />

and beyond that, the North Sea leaps to shore on the<br />

soft sandy beach. The golf club is a major draw for many<br />

visitors and it’s always full, but this is a peaceful corner<br />

of Scotland to stay in, no matter what you like to do with<br />

your time. If you fancy picking up a club for the first<br />

time, there’s a small putting green at Links House, or<br />

you can play croquet on the lawn. But if all you want to<br />

do is wander and wonder, this is the perfect place for it.<br />

There is something in the air here. I spent a lot of time just<br />

sitting on the balcony of my apartment, gazing at the sky,<br />

or strolling along the beach and trying to catch the shape<br />

of the sunlight with my camera. It’s like trying to hold<br />

onto air. It is there one moment, the light falls with its<br />

own whisper, and then the next moment it has changed<br />

and you can never catch it. You can only experience it.<br />

The surrounding area of Dornoch is ideal for hiking,<br />

fishing and biking, but staying closer to the town, a simple<br />

walk along the beach and over the golf course, listening<br />

carefully for the call of “fore” warning you a golf ball is<br />

loose in the air, offers the perfect way to breathe in the<br />

sea air and stir an appetite for dinner. A circular walk leads<br />

you down to the shoreline, by the water’s edge, then back<br />

up over the dunes, across the golf course and on towards<br />

the road. Here you can take a short woodland walk, where<br />

you’ll see squirrels and hear the rumour of wildcats. Then<br />

you’re in the town once more, by the old castle, and it’s<br />

just a few steps back to Links House. Take a moment to<br />

stop off at the chocolate shop, Cocoa Mountain, to pick<br />

up some handmade chocolate treats, and then follow the<br />

call of the sea.<br />

The food at Links House is thoughtfully prepared. On my<br />

walk, I passed the head chef, Theo, picking sage from the<br />

herb garden. It later appeared on my plate. The dinner<br />

menu is a bounty of local produce, and I recommend<br />

the taster menu with the wine flight for an overview of<br />

tastes and to spend a few hours taking your time over<br />

the flavours. Like everything you’ll do at Dornoch, it’s a<br />

calming way to while away the time and the dishes are<br />

works of art.<br />

In the morning, yawning and feeling the relaxing charm<br />

of another sky of unique light, breakfast awaits. A full<br />

Scottish breakfast, no less, including haggis – they also<br />

offer a vegan breakfast with vegan haggis. This will<br />

prepare you for more strolls on the beach before it’s time<br />

to head home.<br />

Of all the many reasons to visit Dornoch, it’s the air itself<br />

that has stayed with me. The light from those big Scottish<br />

skies is unlike any other light I’ve experienced. It changes<br />

colour, tone, depth and hue in an instant, and it’s always<br />

beautiful. To sit under that sky with the waves lurching<br />

and ice tinkling in a whisky glass is true peace. n<br />

have not rested on their laurels in their continued<br />

commitment to sustainability and ensuring they<br />

provide a positive impact on their surroundings. Quinta do<br />

Lago in Portugal is a case in point, recently unveiling their<br />

upgraded South Course. The 7-million-euro investment<br />

has resulted in an enhanced playing experience offered by<br />

this iconic resort, as well as consolidating its environmental<br />

commitment.<br />

Sustainability was the cornerstone of the development,<br />

with the Quinta do Lago team working with the Golf<br />

Environment Organisation (GEO) and local non-profit<br />

company VitaNativa to enhance the environmental<br />

credentials across the resort. VitaNativa has spent a year<br />

documenting the fauna present in Quinta do Lago to assist<br />

in the environmental stewardship across the courses.<br />

Water management has been a key element, with new<br />

irrigation pumps and enhancements to the existing system<br />

resulting in greater control of water resources. The upgrades<br />

have included subtle changes that provide new challenges<br />

and will enhance the golfing experience.<br />

In Mallorca, Golf Son Muntaner is considered to be one of<br />

the most beautiful courses on the island, surrounded by<br />

a variety of Mediterranean flora and fauna. It boasts the<br />

oldest olive tree ‘Na Capitana’ on Mallorca. In 2016, Golf Son<br />

Muntaner completely reseeded the golf course; Bermuda<br />

Celebration was sown on every fairway and Agrostis V8<br />

on every green. The project enhanced the course, while<br />

demonstrating the venue’s commitment to environmental<br />

change, with less water and chemical usage.<br />

The integration of environmental leadership and adoption<br />

meet mandatory criteria, which are then reviewed. The<br />

overall member performance is appraised over a 5-year<br />

period to ensure continuous effort has been made across<br />

the key themes.<br />

Among the measures taken by the resort is opting for<br />

energy-efficient equipment and low-energy appliances.<br />

Water conservation is managed through the installation<br />

of sensors and regulators, together with the desalination<br />

of sea water. With an offshore coral reef that protects the<br />

bay, the resort has taken on a role to protect the marine<br />

environment, ensuring waste water is not discharged into<br />

the ocean, encouraging and supporting the clean-up of the<br />

coastal environment and performing coral planting. The<br />

mantra is one of caring for guests, caring for the Indian<br />

Ocean environment and culture, and caring for the planet.<br />

Also within an island environment, Golf Son Muntaner<br />

in Mallorca is serious about the stewardship of its<br />

Mediterranean flora and fauna. Environmental activities<br />

have made it possible to reduce carbon emissions, which,<br />

together with the large green areas, minimises the<br />

carbon footprint.<br />


GOLF<br />

Sustainable water management is undertaken by reusing<br />

regenerated water. A new irrigation system optimises<br />

water use and by changing the grass, there is a lower use of<br />

chemicals and increased water savings.<br />

Energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy options<br />

are key to developing a cleaner and more sustainable model.<br />

Actions to support this include installation of electric car<br />

charging points and using LED technology and hybrid<br />

machinery. Further clean energy will be self-generated by<br />

the installation of solar panels.<br />

Terre Blanche in the south of France was developed<br />

from the outset with the idea of maintaining the natural<br />

balance. Before any development was undertaken, a<br />

phyto-sociological study of the site was completed. This<br />

identified the aquatic and wetland habitats, temporary<br />

ponds, and the forest stands in order to define the<br />

conservation issues. In 2019, Terre Blanche was awarded a<br />

silver medal as part of the Golf for Biodiversity programme,<br />

a project initiated by the French Golf Federation in<br />

partnership with the Museum of Natural History.<br />

In the construction phase, the aim was to reduce the<br />

impact on the environment. To this end, the excavated<br />

material from the earthworks was treated on site, then<br />

naturally enriched to reuse on fairways and common areas.<br />

Similar measures of on-site recycling practices continue<br />

today. Mowing products are left on-site to act as natural<br />

fertiliser. Core samples are collected and dispersed in the<br />

undergrowth to contribute to the growth of plant and<br />

bacterial cover. And even the donkeys, which have become<br />

the mascots of Terre Blanche, do their bit by negating much<br />

of the need for mechanical clearing.<br />
