Unforgettable moments are what distinguish music festivals. If one thing is
certain, it’s that you, too, will find your perfect concert moment at STIMMEN.
At the STIMMEN festival (German for “voices”), only the visitors are as diverse as
the sounds and voices heard here – from experimental to popular, from budding
superstars to the big names of the international music scene, from small-scale,
intimate sets to spectacular main stage extravaganzas.
But all of the shows have one thing in common: Each one of them is an homage to
the power and beauty of the human voice.
STIMMEN has played host to celebrities such as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith,
Die Fantastischen Vier, Jan Delay, Elton John, Ute Lemper and many others.
Guggemusik is very
Sounds like gibberish? You’ll be hearing a lot of that at Lörrach’s
specifically interpreted
Fasnacht, or Carnival, celebrations. The Hemliglunggi celebration in
music underpinned by a
strong rhythm. Did you know...?
At the heart of the Lörrach Fasnacht celebrations is the Guggemusik,
where marching band music blares through the streets.
Lörrach is the German
birthplace of Guggemusik. With
its beginnings in Lörrach in 1953,
No one is immune to the alluring power of the celebration.
An unforgettable scene awaits – uniquely wild and sweeping
Guggemusik and a vibrant curtain of confetti.
in Germany” and still
There is plenty more to see in this colourful crowd, including a
vivid mix of traditional and topical costumes alike. And the range
of traditional wooden masks and accompanying costumes seems
endless.
Further north, you can hear the snappy calls of “Helau” or “Alaaf”,
Don’t forget
Badges and pins are more
than just souvenirs of the
Lörrach Fasnacht celebrations
Once upon a time …
Rötteln
Castle Ruins
12
Atop a spur high above Lörrach, the real symbol of the city sits: Rötteln Castle – the largest
medieval castle ruin in the Upper Rhine region.
The castle’s stones could tell a story almost 1,000 years old. It all began with the Lords of
Rötteln – the most powerful and famous noble family of the region. The castle was much
smaller in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the family resided there. Yet the imposing
Bergfried, or keep, served as the centrepiece all the same. Back then, this tower was used
as a lookout to protect the castle’s lords from attack. Today, visitors can climb it to enjoy a
magnificent view over Lörrach, the Wiesental valley and into Switzerland.
It was during the second noble family’s residence in the castle that it was expanded to its
current dimensions. Both grandeur and security were factored into the renovations. The
castle’s sheer size illustrated the power of the resident lords, and its great hall played host
to indulgent feasts. At the same time, gunpowder and firearms were invented in the 14th
century, making adequate protection a necessity. The walls were built thicker or even doubled
up and embrasures were built into them. All of this can still be seen today. All you need is a
little imagination and you can travel through time to the Middle Ages.
Image Archiv Röttelnbund
Today, the castle complex comprises the upper castle with a small museum and the lower
castle with a café and beer garden. A well-kept barbecue area is located behind the complex.
The Röttler Wald (Rötteln Forest) is the perfect place for a long walk. All in all, Rötteln Castle
is the perfect destination for a day trip.

Dreiländermuseum Lörrach
The history of
the tri-border area

Borders are fascinating places. Almost everyone has a bordercrossing
story to tell, from anecdotes of forgotten passports
to the daily commute for those who work in a different
country from where they live to more nerve-wracking tales of
fleeing, exile or smuggling.
The meaning of the border joining – and dividing – Germany,
France and Switzerland has shifted greatly over the years.
Today, we view the close-knit ties of the tri-border area as an
indication of modern civilisation. Indeed, these ties date back
to the 19th century, when daily relations already stretched
across the borders.
The history of the borders in the 20th century, however,
tells a different story – one primarily of exclusion, mistrust
and control. Armed border guards, limited entry permits
and the obligation to present a visa had become the norm.
Nevertheless, hope was not lost, and a new beginning was on
the horizon.
It’s your turn to put yourself into the shoes of those living
in the tri-border region. Visit the Dreiländermuseum to find
out what sort of impact changing border policy had and still
has for them. What clichés still exist? What damage could be
15
repaired and what ties were cut forever?
The Dreiländermuseum’s permanent exhibition is the only one
in Europe dedicated to the history and individual stories of a
tri-border area. The history of the border between Germany,
France and Switzerland comes to life through interactive
stations where visitors of all ages can touch and listen and
even solve puzzles. The exhibition is in German and French.
The museum’s temporary exhibitions highlight individual
aspects of Lörrach and the surrounding region in greater
detail.
Freedom
for all!
21 September
Lörrach as a
revolutionary city
On 21 September 1848, Gustav Struve delivered
revolutionary words from the balcony of city hall,
crying out for “prosperity, education, freedom for
all”. And not only that, Lörrach served as the seat
of government of the newly proclaimed German
Republic for three whole days.
16
Although the guerrilla troops were halted after
just three days and the attempted coup failed,
the demands made have retained their meaning
until today.
“Prosperity, education,
freedom for all”
Since 2015, a multifaceted programme has
taken place in Lörrach each autumn dedicated
to the topic of democracy. The highlight of the
event is 21 September – the Day of Democracy.
A re-enactment of the revolutionary speech and
festivities allow visitors to relive the events
of 1848.

Following in the
revolutionaries’ footsteps
Look for signs of German democracy in Lörrach. Why did the revolution
break out in Lörrach of all places? What did its proximity to the border
have to do with it?
Visit the old sites of the revolution such as the old city hall right next to
the tourist information centre. In the Dreiländermuseum, you can find
out about the historical background and view original artefacts from the
time period.
You can even retrace the route of democracy through South Baden via
mountain bike, e-bike or city bicycle. Discover the historic sites of the
revolution in the Wiesental valley, the Kandertal valley and the Rhine
Knee in Basel. The three paths of Lörrach’s Bike.Routes.Revolution are
recreations of those followed by Gustav Struve and his guerrilla troops,
both on the attack and in retreat.
Aesthetic
inspiration
Take an
artistic stroll
through
Lörrach
Sometimes a small adventure is all it takes.
Are you ready? Open your eyes and take a stroll
through Lörrach’s city centre. Now look a little
closer. Don’t forget to look up, down and all around.
There is plenty to discover – sculptures, fountains,
decorative façades and smaller pieces of art from
the past. Included in these works are pieces by
both local and internationally renowned artists.
Some are objective, some abstract. From serious or
18
admonishing to tongue-in-cheek. And each piece
has its own story to tell.
Curious? Want more information on the pieces
of art? Or do you just want to make sure you
don’t miss any? Then be sure to pick up a Lörrach
sculpture route brochure to take with you. It will
lead you to 23 works all within the city centre.
If that isn’t enough, you can view even more art
from Lörrach at the Paul-Ibenthaler-Haus, in the
Brombach art gallery or in the various temporary
exhibitions at the Dreiländermuseum. Of course,
it’s also worth popping into a studio or two, as they
are sprinkled throughout Lörrach, or visiting the
annual Nacht der offenen Ateliers – an open studio
night.
Let’s spray
Graffiti as far as
the eye can see
20
If you take a walk through Grüttpark, you cannot miss the
Open Bridge, where 56 enormous piles from the A98 motorway
bridge are all sprayed with their own unique designs.
From sensational 20-metre high murals by internationally
active graffiti artists to the first stencils and sketches from
the youth of Lörrach, there is something here for and from
everyone.
Be sure to plan a return visit, as you are certain to see
something new the second time around.
Graffiti fans should also keep their eyes peeled in the city
centre. There are even more works of art to discover on every
corner, like the murals on the Rosenfelshalle gymnasium
painted by Tasso and Bane or the writings and drawings from
Lörrach’s youth and professional artist Paze outside the city
church.
Want to give graffiti a go? All you need is a “green card”
issued by the city.

21
Tip
Our “Graffiti-Open-Air-Walk” takes
you on a walking tour of the images
under the motorway bridge. We
also recommend the guided cycling
tour “Bunte Wände erzählen ihre
Geschichte” for finding out more
about the history and background
of graffiti as an art form.

Are you just looking for a place
to unwind in Lörrach?
The park can be your oasis of relaxation between activities.
Why not lay out in the sun on one of the parks many lawns?
If you’re lucky, you might even be able to snag a coveted spot
on one of the docks by Grüttsee lake. No other place in the
city offers quite so much natural scenery – birds tweeting,
frogs croaking and every now and then, a turtle might pop its
head out of the water. If you take a walk through the park, you
will notice many old and sometimes exotic trees. And make
sure to visit the beautiful rose garden. You can grab a coffee
at the café next door and enjoy the view out over the lake.
Tüllinger hill (452 m)
Up, up, up!
Lörrach’s own little mountain, Tüllinger hill, can be accessed
via the Wiese river banks and climbed by foot, or more
easygoing by taking bus line 8.
Once you arrive at the top, you will be rewarded by the charm
of Tüllingen’s quaintness, the vineyards and breathtaking view
over Lörrach and the Wiesental valley toward Switzerland.
Even France seems to be just a stone’s throw away from up
here. If skies are clear, you can see all the way to the Vosges
mountains. All three countries are best seen from Lindenplatz
or from the mythical St. Ottilien church. And if you make it
there, it’s also worth having a peek inside.
Tüllinger Weinweg?
Check it out!

Tüllinger hill is all about wine. The Tüllinger wine route
stretches over 2 km through the vineyards, detailing
everything you need to know about Markgräfler wine-making.
And if you want to keep going, you can tack on a hike along
the Weiler or the Riehener wine routes (Weinwege). If you
get hungry along the way, make sure to finish off your visit
at a cosy inn and restaurant or Straußi – a wine tavern that
serves regional food made of homegrown products and often
features outdoor seating. Traditional regional specialities are
best washed down with a glass of chasselas from the Tüllinger
vineyards.
Highlights
Each September, local winemakers present their wines,
sparkling wines and spirits at the Tüllinger wine market.
For the biennial “Weinweg in Flammen”, the vineyard paths
high above the city are lit by Swedish torches and other
flaming beacons, leading the way to stands selling local
delicacies.
Hiking in
and around
Lörrach

For hiking enthusiasts with plenty of stamina,
we recommend the following long-distance
hiking trails:
The Westweg: the classic path
290 km divided into 12 legs through the Black Forest
Leg 12 (west): Kandern – Lörrach – Basel
Distance: 26 km – Duration: 7:30 h
The Westweg trail stretches through the charming
Markgräflerland towards Basel. Small vineyards
and the imposing ruins of Rötteln Castle with the
Westweg gateway await you in Lörrach.
Rötteln Castle
Take a detour through Lörrach’s city centre and
bring this leg of your journey to a close in comfort
before continuing on to Basel the following day.
What makes Lörrach distinctive is that it is a city
surrounded by nature. No matter where you look, you’re
sure to see greenery. The forested hillsides surrounding the
city are just begging to be roamed.
Perfect destinations for a quick afternoon getaway or a
demanding day of hiking, Tüllinger hill, the Wiese river,
fragrant forests and meadow orchards are all waiting to
be explored. And there are plenty of places along the way
to stop for a bite to eat – or you can pack a picnic lunch to
enjoy in the sun in your new favourite spot. The paths are
dotted with picnic benches and barbecue huts.
Start at Rötteln Castle, Rechberg mountain or Lindenplatz
in Tüllingen for shorter walks around Lörrach. There you
can easily find parking and info boards posted by the Black
Forest Association (Schwarzwaldverein).
The Interregio hiking trail
31
210 km divided into 11 legs through the tri-border area
Leg 3: Kandern – Lörrach – Steinen
Distance: 20.2 km – Duration: 5:30 h
Pull on your hiking boots and explore the
border region where Germany meets France and
Switzerland. Discover three different cultures and
three different landscapes, from the Black Forest to
the Vosges mountains and the Jura mountains.
60 km along the Wiese river
Follow in the footsteps of the Alemannic dialect
poet Johann Peter Hebel.
The Hebel hiking trail leading from the Feldberg,
which is the highest mountain of the Black Forest
here. Like hiking (or anything else), cycling knows no bounds
in this region. Indeed, you probably won’t even notice that
you’ve passed over into Alsace or Switzerland, as the borders
often show no demarcation. There is no shortage of exciting
Switzerland is only a short hop from Lörrach.
A mere 2 kilometres separate Lörrach from the
border. If you take the local S-Bahn train, you will
arrive in Basel in just 10 minutes, with its sunsoaked
banks of the Rhine river and picturesque
old town. What’s more, you can choose from nearly
40 museums to visit, all featuring spectacular
collections and unique temporary exhibitions –
from art and design to science to music, history
and more.
Fondation Beyeler
There’s a reason why the Fondation Beyeler is
the most-visited art museum in Switzerland.
Over 300 works lead visitors through the history
of art throughout the 20th century. And regular,
large special exhibitions give visitors a profound
impression of various aspects of classical modern art.
Lörrach is home to countless shops, each with their own special flair. So, don’t
forget to plan in time to amble through the main shopping streets in the city
centre, with their cute boutiques and owner-run small businesses as well as
prestigious shops. Not to mention the range of local products at the outdoor
market and treats to be found at the city’s restaurants and cafés.
Lörrach’s many public events frequently transform the city centre into a lively
fairground, for instance at the spring festival, where visitors can enjoy live music
and go shopping on a Sunday, when everything typically remains closed. Chocolate
lovers of all ages attend the Milka chocolate festival, where the market square
is bathed in the chocolate company’s signature purple colours. The international
summer festival celebrates Lörrach’s dynamic culture. And that’s not nearly
everything! Have a look in our magazine lueg emol to find out what festival you
can attend during your visit.
