FROM THE HEAD COACH
Hello everyone and welcome back to
Eppleton, as we begin 2022 with this
afternoon’s FA Women’s Championship
meeting with Crystal Palace.
It’s great to be back here at Eppleton after
a bit of a break, and I know how much the
girls have been looking forward to playing
in front of you all again and battling to keep
moving up the league table.
The festive period gave us an opportunity
to pause and reflect on what we’ve
achieved so far, so we’re ready to set our
stall out and keep building in this New Year.
We know what we want to achieve over the
course of the remainder of this season.
The year of 2021 was certainly an eventful
one, and of course the first thing that
comes to mind is securing promotion –
we feel as if we’re really pushing in the right
direction now with a good young squad.
We had a couple of sessions over Christmas
just to retain that sharpness and to keep in
touch with the girls on a regular basis while
we weren’t playing games.
We know how tough today’s game will be
against a strong Palace side sitting fourth in
the league. We’ll now look to go one better
with the backing of your support,
as it’s vital to secure as many home points
as possible – especially with a busy January
during which we’ve got some long
away trips.
Today, this month and this season will be
a real squad effort, and we as always thank
you for your support.

FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Hello everyone and welcome back
to Eppleton, as we begin the New Year
by continuing our season in the FA
Women’s Championship against
Crystal Palace.
It’s great to be back for us girls playing
in front of you all again, and we’re really
appreciative of how your support has
helped us so far this season.
It’s been great it 2021 firstly to get
promoted, and then I think we’ve really
built well from there. We have a young
and promising squad and I believe that
we’ve shown real character towards the
end of the calendar year.
We’ve had injuries and illnesses at
certain points throughout the season,
and we’ve really pulled together as a
team and worked hard to get ourselves
into a good position.
After the few weeks we’ve had without
a game, the girls are now really excited
and fully focused on picking up where we
left off and having a strong second half
of the season.
There are a busy couple of weeks on the
road coming up this month which will
require the whole squad to be right at it,
so it’s good for us to be here at Eppleton
in our first match back – it’s great to play
in front of you all and your support never
goes unnoticed.
Our priority is the league and that’s one
thing we’ve always made clear, so we go
again now to pick up as many points as
we can for the rest of the season.

Iris Achterhof
leaves club
Sunderland AFC Ladies can
confirm Iris Achterhof has left
the club by mutual consent.
The Dutch forward arrived from
Durham ahead of the new FA Women’s
Championship season in 2021-22, and
made four appearances for Mel Reay’s
side during the first half of the campaign.
SAFC would like to thank Iris for her
contributions and wish her the very best
for her future career.
Lasses handed
Birmingham tie
Sunderland Ladies have been
drawn away to Birmingham City
Women in the fourth round of
the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.
Mel Reay’s side advanced into the hat
for the fourth round draw having beaten
Brighouse Town 1-0 last month.
Now handed the challenge of WSL
opposition, the Lasses are set to visit
the West Midlands on Sunday 30
January 2022.
Further tie and ticket information will
be announced in due course.

Sunderland Ladies came out on top on
December 15 as they beat Liverpool
Women on penalties in the group finale
of the Continental Cup.
Emma Kelly, Emily Scarr, Neve Herron
and Maria Farrugia all converted from
the spot to claim the two points – which
whilst unfortunately not enough to
see the Lasses qualify for the knockout
stages, showed a real productive edge in
their display.
Liverpool controlled possession early in
the first half, but Sunderland managed to
stand strong to thwart any opportunity
that the away side looked to create.
The Lasses grew into the half and
pressed the Liverpool defence well, with
chances falling to Farrugia and Herron
on the edge of the box, but both shots
were smothered by Charlotte Clarke.
Mel Reay’s side continued to threaten
the back line, and strong opportunities
fell to Farrugia and Abbey Joice around
the box, but neither could test the GK.

The second half continued in similar
fashion, with Sunderland pressing
Liverpool high, and it almost paid off
when Farrugia stole the ball in the 63rd
minute, drove through the middle and
fired a shot just past the far post.
Liverpool finished the game strongly,
striking the bar from a cross, and looked
to have taken the lead when a shot
looked destined for the net until heroics
from Herron as she cleared the ball off
the line, and Charlotte Potts headed off
the line just seconds later.
After Keira Ramshaw and Niamh Fahey
both missed their opening penalties,
the Lasses scored the remaining four
to secure a 4-2 penalty victory.
Despite not qualifying due to results in
other groups, the Lasses earned a hardfought
victory.
