JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Clem Morfuni,
Swindon Town’s chairman, to
One Call Stadium for this evening’s
game.
Despite our cup exit on Saturday, I
was so proud of our club at full-time.
Our players’ endeavours - most
notably in the last hour of the game
- were exceptional and should give
us great heart as we head into the
second half of our league campaign.
I thought we were desperately
unfortunate not to win the match
against a good Championship side,
given the amount of chances we
created in the second period.
Our players and management should
be proud of their efforts, not only
from Saturday’s match, but in the two
previous rounds against League One
opposition.
Our supporters have thoroughly
enjoyed this season’s cup run and
I was greatly encouraged by our
bumper crowd at the weekend of
7297, the highest home attendance
since our League Two play-off semifinal
against Newport County in May
2019.
My hope is that many in Saturday’s
crowd will return to One Call Stadium
to back our boys in what is set to be a
fascinating second half of the season.
Thank you for your outstanding
support.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Swindon Town The cup run has been brilliant,
manager Ben Garner, along with three great games, but the
with the staff, players and fans next 24 league matches are what
from the County Ground for this matters now, starting with tonight’s
evening’s match.
encounter.
Our FA Cup journey ended on
Saturday following a cracking cup tie
against Middlesbrough, but our effort
and play to get back into it, against
a good Championship side, was
exceptional.
We weren’t anywhere near the levels
we could be inside the opening thirty
minutes, but were brilliant within the
last hour of the match and there’s a
very good argument to say that we
could have won the game.
We knew that if we got one goal back
– like we did against Hartlepool
here on Boxing Day - we
would be back in the
game, especially with
the vocal support of
the home fans.
We made it
uncomfortable for
them and to get so
close to winning the
game left us with
mixed emotions at
the end.
We’ve not managed
at too many clubs where
home supporters stay
behind to give you an
ovation for effort and
quality alone, regardless of
the result, but that seems
to be the case here. It’s
really good for the players
to hear and gives us much
encouragement.
Thank you for your support and enjoy
this evening’s game.
Stags under-18s’ defender Cody
Collins discusses life at the club’s
academy and his hopes for the rest
of the season…
We’ve got quite a young team.
A lot of the second-year
scholars have gone out on loan.
There have been under-23s games
for us to play in as a result of that and
playing in those have been a good
experience for some of us younger
lads.
We learn from playing alongside first
team players such as Richard Nartey.
We can take what we learn from
players like him into our under-18s’
games and help some of our younger
lads in that side in the same way that
players like him have helped me.
It’s a first-team environment playing
in the under-23s’ games. You’re
constantly surrounded by
first-team players and
being able to see what
that’s like is really helpful.
From getting minutes
in those games, you
see the difference from
THE
ACADEMY
playing in an under-18s’ environment
and I think it’s helping to further
the development of us lads who are
involved in those matches.
The coaches give us a lot of
honesty and prepare us for being a
professional footballer. They make
it as realistic as they can for us in
training and remind us to always
train how we play.
We’re told to always give maximum
effort in everything we do and work
as hard as possible so that when
we do go over to the first-team it’s
normal to train and play like that
every single day.
Personally, I want to keep playing
in the under-18s every week and
carry on where I left off playing in the
under-23s’ games.
I’ll be aiming to continue
getting minutes and starts
for them throughout the
rest of the season.
Hopefully I will keep
doing well and keep
enjoying it.
Mansfield Town Ladies’ manager
Andi Bell provides the latest update
on her side’s season…
Recently we’ve drawn a couple
of games in the league against
Notts County and Oughtibridge just
prior to Christmas.
It was a little bit disappointing
dropping points in those games as
we’re looking to continue our aim of
challenging for the league title.
I think in the Oughtibridge game,
in particular, we were worthy of all
three points and just needed to be
more clinical.
We’ve made our eventual aim a
little bit more difficult but we’re still
unbeaten and there are plenty more
games to come.
We’ve still got to play all the teams
above us twice this season so it’s still
all in our hands.
Being unbeaten at this stage of the
season is a good achievement but
we’ve just got to keep pushing on
now.
It’s been a little bit stop-start in the
past couple of weeks with games
being postponed but we have to keep
going.
There’ll be a lot of fixtures to come.
We had a game against Leicester
called off at the weekend which was
frustrating.
I understand the reasons why
teams at the moment are
having to cancel and are
unable to fulfil scheduled
matches.
We managed to get
ourselves a friendly at
a standard which was
good for us. We played
Lichfield but of course it
was frustrating not to have a
competitive game, particularly
as we haven’t played one for a while
now.
Our facilities at RH Academy are
fantastic and we’re thankful to the
club for that.
I’d like to put on record how good it
is to see the men’s side performing
so well at the minute. They’ve turned
a corner and they’re doing everyone
proud.
We’d love to get people down to
RH Academy for some of our home
games. It would be great to have as
many people there as possible to
support us.
The backing gives everyone an extra
boost and it’s much appreciated.
There’s plenty of tough and exciting
matches to come so getting as many
people to come would be brilliant
for us.
STAGS PLAYER VISITS
In December, there were numerous
visits made by Stags players,
contributing towards a number
of different provisions hosted
by Mansfield Town Football in
the Community. As well as the
Premier League Kicks programme,
Football in the Community are also
involved in the Premier League
Primary Stars programme. Premier
League Primary Stars uses the
appeal of the Premier League
and professional football clubs to
inspire children to learn, be active
and develop important life skills.
The programme has been developed
by the ‘Premier League Charitable
Fund’, a Premier League funded
charity which aims to create positive
and lasting sporting, health and
education outcomes for children,
young people and the wider
community.
Stags players Danny Johnson and
Oli Hawkins attended one of our
Premier League Primary Stars
sessions at Jacksdale School during
December. This allowed young Stags
fans to meet some of the players
and gain an insight on what it’s like
to be a football player. FITC also
ran PL Kicks sessions at All Saints
Academy, and were treat to a surprise
appearances from midfielder Keaton
Ward and goalkeeper Marek Stech,
who took time to talk to the pupils
in the classroom and answer their
questions.
THE GOLDEN
‘HIS STORY’
ARCHIVE
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
Continuing the season with
‘His-Story’, is former box-to-box
midfielder Darrell Clarke. A local
lad from Ladybrook, Darrell first
caught the attention of the club and
joined the Centre of Excellence as a
10-year-old. He signed professional
terms in 1995 and scored on his full
home debut.
Darrell went on to make 173 league
and cup appearances for Mansfield,
scoring 25 goals.
used to go and watch
“I Mansfield as a fan, from a
young age, as my Grandad was a
steward at the club. We’d go and
sit on the old wooden seats in the
Quarry Lane end, singing all the
songs – especially Mansfield Magic!
I have a lot of good memories from
my time at the club – especially as
I then went on to play for Mansfield
until I was 23.
As a member of the Centre of
Excellence – as the youth team set up
was then called - we used to have to
do some extremely menial jobs. The
groundsman at the time, would cut
the grass on the main pitch, and he’d
make us shovel it all up and take it
out onto the training pitch, and tip it
all down the side of the banking!
It was hard graft at the time! I recall
our former youth team manager,
Keith Alexander - he used to put on a
pair of white gloves whenever we’d
tidied up and cleaned a room. He’d
then run his finger along the top of
the door to test that we’d left no dust.
We’d more often than not have to
clean the room again!
We used to have to clean the toilets,
etc, but we always had a good laugh
whatever we were doing. We used to
play a game in the changing rooms
– we’d do kick-ups between us and
whoever ended up dropping the ball
onto the floor was punished by taking
the ball, in a towel, in the back of
the head! We wouldn’t be able to get
away with doing such things these
days!
As a professional there were many
good memories too. I remember once
doing a goal celebration with Lee
Peacock. It was the day of the Grand
National, and we’d said beforehand
if either of us scored I’d get on all
fours, and he’d get behind me as
though he was the jockey and whip
me as though I was a horse. It didn’t
turn out that well – I’m sure you can
imagine what this looked like!
The video footage of this made its
way onto Soccer AM at the time!”
