game.<br />

Despite our cup exit on Saturday, I<br />

was so proud of our club at full-time.<br />

Our players’ endeavours - most<br />

notably in the last hour of the game<br />

- were exceptional and should give<br />

us great heart as we head into the<br />

second half of our league campaign.<br />

I thought we were desperately<br />

unfortunate not to win the match<br />

against a good Championship side,<br />

given the amount of chances we<br />

created in the second period.<br />

Our players and management should<br />

be proud of their efforts, not only<br />

from Saturday’s match, but in the two<br />

previous rounds against League One<br />

opposition.<br />

Our supporters have thoroughly<br />

enjoyed this season’s cup run and<br />

I was greatly encouraged by our<br />

bumper crowd at the weekend of<br />

7297, the highest home attendance<br />

since our League Two play-off semifinal<br />

against Newport County in May<br />

2019.<br />

My hope is that many in Saturday’s<br />

crowd will return to One Call Stadium<br />

to back our boys in what is set to be a<br />

fascinating second half of the season.<br />

here on Boxing Day - we<br />

would be back in the<br />

game, especially with<br />

the vocal support of<br />

the home fans.<br />

We made it<br />

uncomfortable for<br />

them and to get so<br />

close to winning the<br />

game left us with<br />

mixed emotions at<br />

the end.<br />

We’ve not managed<br />

at too many clubs where<br />

home supporters stay<br />

behind to give you an<br />

ovation for effort and<br />

quality alone, regardless of<br />

the result, but that seems<br />

to be the case here. It’s<br />

really good for the players<br />

to hear and gives us much<br />

encouragement.<br />

Josh Scott has joined Northern<br />

Premier League Division One East<br />

team Frickley Athletic. The 20-yearold<br />

joins the West Yorkshire side<br />

off the back of a promising start<br />

to the 2021/22 campaign. Scott’s<br />

last loan spell saw the youngster<br />

deployed at Nuneaton Borough<br />

in the Southern League Premier<br />

Division Central. The striker will<br />

remain at Sike Everbuild Stadium<br />

for one month.<br />

Fellow <strong>Mansfield</strong> <strong>Town</strong> Academy<br />

striker Nathan Caine (pictured above)<br />

has gone out on loan for a month to<br />

Ilkeston <strong>Town</strong>. The west Derbyshire<br />

club play in the Northern Premier<br />

League, England’s seventh division.<br />

Caine has previously had loan spells<br />

Collins discusses life at the club’s<br />

academy and his hopes for the rest<br />

of the season…<br />

We’ve got quite a young team.<br />

A lot of the second-year<br />

scholars have gone out on loan.<br />

There have been under-23s games<br />

for us to play in as a result of that and<br />

playing in those have been a good<br />

experience for some of us younger<br />

lads.<br />

We learn from playing alongside first<br />

team players such as Richard Nartey.<br />

We can take what we learn from<br />

players like him into our under-18s’<br />

games and help some of our younger<br />

lads in that side in the same way that<br />

players like him have helped me.<br />

It’s a first-team environment playing<br />

in the under-23s’ games. You’re<br />

constantly surrounded by<br />

first-team players and<br />

being able to see what<br />

that’s like is really helpful.<br />

From getting minutes<br />

in those games, you<br />

see the difference from<br />

ACADEMY<br />

playing in an under-18s’ environment<br />

and I think it’s helping to further<br />

the development of us lads who are<br />

involved in those matches.<br />

The coaches give us a lot of<br />

honesty and prepare us for being a<br />

professional footballer. They make<br />

it as realistic as they can for us in<br />

training and remind us to always<br />

train how we play.<br />

We’re told to always give maximum<br />

effort in everything we do and work<br />

as hard as possible so that when<br />

we do go over to the first-team it’s<br />

normal to train and play like that<br />

every single day.<br />

Personally, I want to keep playing<br />

in the under-18s every week and<br />

carry on where I left off playing in the<br />

under-23s’ games.<br />

I’ll be aiming to continue<br />

getting minutes and starts<br />

for them throughout the<br />

rest of the season.<br />

Hopefully I will keep<br />

doing well and keep<br />

Andi Bell provides the latest update<br />

on her side’s season…<br />

Recently we’ve drawn a couple<br />

of games in the league against<br />

Notts County and Oughtibridge just<br />

prior to Christmas.<br />

It was a little bit disappointing<br />

dropping points in those games as<br />

we’re looking to continue our aim of<br />

challenging for the league title.<br />

I think in the Oughtibridge game,<br />

in particular, we were worthy of all<br />

three points and just needed to be<br />

more clinical.<br />

We’ve made our eventual aim a<br />

little bit more difficult but we’re still<br />

unbeaten and there are plenty more<br />

games to come.<br />

We’ve still got to play all the teams<br />

above us twice this season so it’s still<br />

all in our hands.<br />

Being unbeaten at this stage of the<br />

season is a good achievement but<br />

we’ve just got to keep pushing on<br />

now.<br />

It’s been a little bit stop-start in the<br />

past couple of weeks with games<br />

being postponed but we have to keep<br />

going.<br />

There’ll be a lot of fixtures to come.<br />

We had a game against Leicester<br />

called off at the weekend which was<br />

frustrating.<br />

I understand the reasons why<br />

teams at the moment are<br />

having to cancel and are<br />

unable to fulfil scheduled<br />

matches.<br />

We managed to get<br />

ourselves a friendly at<br />

a standard which was<br />

good for us. We played<br />

Lichfield but of course it<br />

was frustrating not to have a<br />

competitive game, particularly<br />

as we haven’t played one for a while<br />

now.<br />

Our facilities at RH Academy are<br />

fantastic and we’re thankful to the<br />

club for that.<br />

I’d like to put on record how good it<br />

is to see the men’s side performing<br />

so well at the minute. They’ve turned<br />

a corner and they’re doing everyone<br />

proud.<br />

We’d love to get people down to<br />

RH Academy for some of our home<br />

games. It would be great to have as<br />

many people there as possible to<br />

support us.<br />

The backing gives everyone an extra<br />

boost and it’s much appreciated.<br />

There’s plenty of tough and exciting<br />

matches to come so getting as many<br />

people to come would be brilliant<br />

for us.<br />

STAGS PLAYER VISITS<br />

In December, there were numerous<br />

visits made by Stags players,<br />

contributing towards a number<br />

of different provisions hosted<br />

by <strong>Mansfield</strong> <strong>Town</strong> Football in<br />

the Community. As well as the<br />

Premier League Kicks programme,<br />

Football in the Community are also<br />

involved in the Premier League<br />

Primary Stars programme. Premier<br />

League Primary Stars uses the<br />

appeal of the Premier League<br />

and professional football clubs to<br />

inspire children to learn, be active<br />

and develop important life skills.<br />

The programme has been developed<br />

by the ‘Premier League Charitable<br />

Fund’, a Premier League funded<br />

charity which aims to create positive<br />

and lasting sporting, health and<br />

education outcomes for children,<br />

young people and the wider<br />

community.<br />

Stags players Danny Johnson and<br />

Oli Hawkins attended one of our<br />

Premier League Primary Stars<br />

sessions at Jacksdale School during<br />

December. This allowed young Stags<br />

fans to meet some of the players<br />

and gain an insight on what it’s like<br />

to be a football player. FITC also<br />

ran PL Kicks sessions at All Saints<br />

Academy, and were treat to a surprise<br />

appearances from midfielder Keaton<br />

Ward and goalkeeper Marek Stech,<br />

who took time to talk to the pupils<br />

in the classroom and answer their<br />

questions.<br />

THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND<br />

From the sublime to the ridiculous<br />

and everything in between, we look<br />

back with a Stags’ hero of the past,<br />

focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes<br />

moments they will never<br />

forget.<br />

Continuing the season with<br />

‘His-Story’, is former box-to-box<br />

midfielder Darrell Clarke. A local<br />

lad from Ladybrook, Darrell first<br />

caught the attention of the club and<br />

joined the Centre of Excellence as a<br />

10-year-old. He signed professional<br />

terms in 1995 and scored on his full<br />

home debut.<br />

Darrell went on to make 173 league<br />

and cup appearances for <strong>Mansfield</strong>,<br />

scoring 25 goals.<br />

“I <strong>Mansfield</strong> as a fan, from a<br />

young age, as my Grandad was a<br />

steward at the club. We’d go and<br />

sit on the old wooden seats in the<br />

Quarry Lane end, singing all the<br />

songs – especially <strong>Mansfield</strong> Magic!<br />

I have a lot of good memories from<br />

my time at the club – especially as<br />

I then went on to play for <strong>Mansfield</strong><br />

until I was 23.<br />

As a member of the Centre of<br />

Excellence – as the youth team set up<br />

was then called - we used to have to<br />

do some extremely menial jobs. The<br />

groundsman at the time, would cut<br />

the grass on the main pitch, and he’d<br />

make us shovel it all up and take it<br />

out onto the training pitch, and tip it<br />

all down the side of the banking!<br />

It was hard graft at the time! I recall<br />

our former youth team manager,<br />

Keith Alexander - he used to put on a<br />

pair of white gloves whenever we’d<br />

tidied up and cleaned a room. He’d<br />

then run his finger along the top of<br />

the door to test that we’d left no dust.<br />

We’d more often than not have to<br />

clean the room again!<br />

We used to have to clean the toilets,<br />

etc, but we always had a good laugh<br />

whatever we were doing. We used to<br />

play a game in the changing rooms<br />

– we’d do kick-ups between us and<br />

whoever ended up dropping the ball<br />

onto the floor was punished by taking<br />

the ball, in a towel, in the back of<br />

the head! We wouldn’t be able to get<br />

away with doing such things these<br />

days!<br />

As a professional there were many<br />

good memories too. I remember once<br />

doing a goal celebration with Lee<br />

Peacock. It was the day of the Grand<br />

National, and we’d said beforehand<br />

if either of us scored I’d get on all<br />

fours, and he’d get behind me as<br />

though he was the jockey and whip<br />

me as though I was a horse. It didn’t<br />

turn out that well – I’m sure you can<br />

imagine what this looked like!<br />

The video footage of this made its<br />

way onto Soccer AM at the time!”<br />
