Two were killed near Redcliffs in December, but the number is likely to be higher Avon- Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust manager Tanya Jenkins Tanya Jenkins said. She is urging dog owners to follow the rules and not allow their pets onto the mudflats in the estuary where penguins gather. Jenkins also said dogs were continuing to harass other birdlife, particularly on the Southshore side of the estuary. Signage along the estuary states that the mudflats are a ‘no go’ zone for dogs but some local residents continue to ignore the rules, she said. “During December another two little blue penguins were mauled by dogs around Redcliffs and if these two birds were found, there is a high chance the numbers are much higher when mauled birds are taken away by the tides,” Jenkins said. “Even if [birds] are not killed by dogs, the disturbance by dogs running on the mudflats can be life threatening.” Birds can only feed on the mudflats during peak low tide which allows for a short window of only a few hours for them to eat enough to last them the day. Being disturbed by dogs can significantly cut down this time. “If in this short time they are scared, chased by dogs, it can take up to 45 minutes before they regain the courage to continue eating again,” said Jenkins. “Don’t get me wrong, I love OUT OF CONTROL: Dogs off the lead are chasing birds and killing penguins. dogs and have been a dog owner since I was 12-years-old but it’s just such a shame that some dog owners are just not aware of the rules or simply do not wish to abide.” The trust is urging local residents to help make dog owners aware of the rules and to report those who ignore them to the city council. NEWS 3 In Brief IMPACT OF SEA LEVEL RISE SURVEY The city council has created a survey for the Lyttelton Harbour and Port Levy area communities it hopes will help to inform long-term planning as part of the council’s Coastal Hazards Adaptation Planning programme. Low-lying inland and coastal communities will be increasingly impacted by intense storm events and longterm sea level rise leading to more frequent and severe coastal flooding, coastal erosion, and rising groundwater. The focus area of the project is between Lyttelton and Port Levy. The survey is to help understand the risk tolerance of communities in the event of prolonged loss of road access due to the impacts of sea level rise. BUTTERFLY PROGRAMME SUCCESSFUL Monitoring of the reintroduction of the rauparaha butterfly shows it has been successful. The native butterfly, endemic to New Zealand has successfully been reintroduced to Charlesworth Wetland. The butterfly was thought to be extinct, however, a colony was found in Otago and 18 butterflies were transferred to Charlesworth Wetland in October, 2019.
