WINNER: Meg Edwards dominates the 14-year-old girls 80m hurdles final.
Gold medal exploits
earn scholarships
TWO RISING track stars
from the Selwyn Athletics
Club have received
prestigious Nick Willis
scholarships following
their medal-winning
exploits at the South Island
Colgate Games.
Meg Edwards and Jody
McCarthy-Dempsey could
also not be separated in
the 14-year-old girls 80m
hurdles final in Invercargill
last weekend, sharing the
gold.
McCarthy-Dempsey also
won the long jump in her
age group while Edwards
was a member of the silver
medal-winning 14-year-old
medley relay for boys and
girls.
The scholarship, named
after the five-time Olympian
and two-time 1500m
medallist, covers $500 of
athletics gear.
Rolleston-based junior
athletes aged 10-14 thrived
during three days of competition
to claim 15 gold
medals, 14 silvers and 13
bronze.
Connor Woodcock was
the most prolific champion,
winning gold in the
11-year-old 100m, 200m
and 400m.
Isabel Prescott also
won two of her events in
the 11-year-old age group,
the 800m and 1500m
double.
There were 35 other
top-eight finishes while
squad members aged
between seven and nine
were awarded 25 pennants.
A team of 11 athletes also
headed to Wellington for
the North Island Colgate
Games from January
7-9, where the squad
again performed with
distinction.
Edwards again dominated
the 80m hurdles
while Molly O’Reilly
showcased her versatility
by winning the 14-year-old
girls 2000m race walk before
being part of the silver
medal-winning 4x100m
relay squad.
Woodcock also left the
capital with a haul of silver
from the three races he
won down south.
