The country is located in the northern half of the hemisphere
as an intersection point of European and Asian sections. Bulk
of the national territories takes place in Anatolian Peninsula
and the rest locates in Thrace where is the extension of the
Balkans Peninsula. Turkey is surrounded by sea on three sides,
by the Black Sea in the north, the Mediterranean in the south and
the Aegean Sea in the west. In the north west, there is also an
important internal sea, the Sea of Marmara, between the straits
of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus, important waterways that
connect the Black Sea with the rest of the world. The neighbours
are; Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran,
Iraq and Syria. More than the half of the land consists of high
regions exceeding 1000 m. Approximately 1/3 of the country is
covered with plains at mean height, high plateaus and mountains
and %10 of it is covered with lowlands. The highest regions
and mountainous districts are located in the Eastern Region.
