During good times, it’s easy to keep a steady hand. But when life throws curve balls
like the world has never seen, those steady hands can become shaky rather quickly.
At Associated Wholesale Grocers, we have thousands of examples of strong, steady
hands keeping grocery stores running, true purveyors of hope for our communities.
And there are thousands of steady hands at AWG supporting those ESSENTIAL pillars
of communities in the 28 states we serve. We’ve been constantly tracking how our
industry is changing and we’re focusing even closer on how the current situation will
change things even more.
We have long prided ourselves on the lowest cost of goods. But now, and in the future,
our retailers need far more than that. Everything from e-commerce to merchandising,
digital marketing to support as we navigate through any crisis together. We have
helping, steady hands for every area of your store and have prided ourselves on being
that steady hand for almost 100 years.
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Essential to Positive Changes
IGIA Board of Directors
Officers
the staff behind the register to
those stocking product and making
food to those managing stores,
our team members represent a
complete picture of ages, races,
religions, sexualities, career paths,
political views and abilities.
I am proud that our businesses can
bring people with all backgrounds
together while earning a paycheck,
gaining training opportunities and
furthering their personal lives. It’s
an opportunity to strengthen our
workforce and better welcome
customers who also represent the
diverse fabric of our communities.
is because of this that I believe
our industry should play an active
role in advocating for our people,
irrespective of our differences.
One way that we, as an industry, can
impact DE&I initiatives is through
our collective policies, procedures
and influence. Over my years as
a board member with the Iowa
Grocery Industry Association (IGIA),
I have served on the Government
Relations committee. Volunteering
alongside other association
members on this working committee
has allowed me to make a positive
impact on legislative and public
policy issues facing our industry.
here’s no doubt that our
industry is essential – the
pandemic proved this
sentiment multiple times over. We
employ thousands and make food
and fuel available to customers
no matter the circumstance. But I
believe our industry is essential for
another reason – we are uniquely
positioned to make positive
changes in our communities.
The pandemic also taught us
that we are better together. It is
that feeling of togetherness that
makes us yearn for the end of the
pandemic or at least a normalization
of our routines and activities.
Iowa’s grocery and convenience
store industry is powered by a
diverse group of individuals. From
Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DE&I)
is a cornerstone of Kum & Go. We
have a full-time DE&I manager who
leads education efforts and ensures
that company policies and practices
are written through an inclusive
lens. Our leaders are undergoing
extensive training on DE&I
concepts. While we are continually
learning and far from perfect, we
have made a concerted effort to
look at our policies, marketing,
hiring and merchandising.
Big or small, internal or external, I
believe a culture that is accepting
of DE&I improvements is important
for the betterment of our society,
our team and our business.
Embracing people of different
backgrounds makes us stronger
as employers and makes us
more attractive to customers. In
short, it is the right thing to do,
and it is good business, which is
a very powerful combination. It
IGIA is seeking volunteers across its
variety of committees. I encourage
you to get engaged with the
association by volunteering with
a committee that is meaningful
to you. More details can be
found at iowagrocers.com.
I’m honored by the opportunity
to serve as the IGIA Chairman for
the 2021-2022 term. I look forward
to continuing the association’s
already strong tradition as a trusted
voice for the state’s grocery and
convenience store industry.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
5 Things to Watch for
in the Year Ahead
MEET the TEAM
a bill the Iowa Grocery Industry
Association (IGIA) supports as it
stores. It also looks to increase
consumer access to redemption
SUPPLY CHAIN UNCERTAINTY
are actively working with national
organizations such as the National
Grocers Association (NGA) and the
Food Industry Association (FMI) to
ensure our members’ voices on this
issue are heard. As rules and legal
challenges continue to unfold, we
will be proactive in communicating
updates and expectations with you.
Cara Corkrean, CAE
Assistant Vice President of
Membership and Operations
Unfortunately, it seems supply
chain uncertainty will remain in the
coming year. Shortages in workforce,
transportation, logistics and product
are causing delays or unavailable
products across all industries around
the globe. While it is far from ideal,
I am confident in our industry’s
resiliency, creativity and courageous
decision-making to source products
and serve customers. We’ve done it
before; we can do it again and there’s
no doubt we are stronger for it.
five
CONTINUED LEADERSHIP
There’s no doubt that our members will
continue to lead in their communities,
rethink how they do business and
innovate to better serve customers. I
am so honored to work with grocery
professionals who are willing to forge
new paths to make the industry more
relevant and supportive than ever
before. I’m excited about what’s ahead.
PROFILE
GET TO KNOW
YOUR CHAIRMAN
Charley Campbell has always embraced
the term “general counsel.” Not only
because he is a lawyer, but also because
he is a generalist in every sense of the word
who is passionate about helping others.
“I get a lot of satisfaction in helping people,
helping businesses and helping leaders
see different perspectives,” he says.
Campbell serves as Chief Legal and Risk Officer,
formerly general counsel, at Krause Group and
Kum & Go. His role is cross functional, serving
every department and 11 businesses across
the parent company. Campbell says the culture
of constant change is what has kept him with
Krause Group for his entire 21-year career.
“I’ve grown as a lawyer and leader, continuing
to find new opportunities to stretch myself
and be involved with new projects, including
my work with the association,” he explains.
VISION FOR IMPACTING THE INDUSTRY
Campbell is the 2021-2022 Chairman of the
Iowa Grocery Industry Association (IGIA) board.
He joined the board in 2013 and has long
served on the Government Affairs committee.
“Our membership in IGIA helps us accomplish
more, especially on legislative issues,” Campbell
says. “IGIA is very effective at helping legislators
see how their actions positively or negatively
impact businesses in the grocery industry.”
In his role as Chairman, Campbell wants to
remind people – particularly legislators – that
Iowa’s grocery industry is essential. It employs
thousands across the state, provides food
for millions of consumers and is engrained
in the fabric of every community.
“A strong retail industry creates a strong
economic environment for the state,” he says.
CHARLEY CAMPBELL
“From the Bottle Bill to transportation
to employment policies, I’m passionate
about being a strong advocate for
issues impacting our industry.”
This includes issues of diversity, equity
and inclusion (DE&I). Both in his role at
Krause Group and as IGIA Chairman,
Campbell is passionate about DE&I.
“We are an industry that serves all,
we are uniquely positioned to make
a positive impact,” he says. “Through
our policies, the way we staff our
stores and the products we offer,
we have an opportunity to create
more equitable communities.”
EMBRACING CAREER CHANGE
Campbell started his Kum & Go
career as an operations intern while
an undergraduate at Iowa State
University. He later worked his way
onto the company’s legal team,
choosing to attend Drake University
so he could continue working at
Kum & Go during law school.
After graduation, Campbell got his
start as an attorney practicing real
estate and employment law. About
a year into his full-time practice, the
company’s then-general counsel and
Campbell’s mentor was diagnosed
with advanced cancer. Campbell was
asked to step in as interim general
counsel even with little experience.
“It was trial by fire, but I was given
the opportunity to get to know
the leadership team and develop
relationships,” Campbell explains.
“Unfortunately, my mentor lost his
battle to cancer in 2010. I was asked
to take on the general counsel role
and fill his incredibly large shoes.”
Over the past 11 years as general
counsel, Campbell has grown his
team from 2 to 15 and taken on
ever-increasing responsibilities
across the company.
I’VE GROWN
AS A LAWYER
AND LEADER,
CONTINUING
TO FIND NEW
OPPORTUNITIES
TO STRETCH
MYSELF AND BE
INVOLVED WITH
NEW PROJECTS,
INCLUDING MY
WORK WITH THE
ASSOCIATION.
OUTSIDE THE OFFICE
Campbell and his wife Nicole have
four children, Thomas (17), Kiersten
(15), Grant (12) and Blake (8).
Much of the couple’s free time is
spent following their children and
their passions for soccer, dance,
swimming, golfing and music.
He also serves as a director for Bravo
Greater Des Moines, a collaboration
of city governments that use a portion
of their hotel/motel tax to fund arts
and culture initiatives in Des Moines.
And true to his generalist nature,
Campbell himself has a wide
range of hobbies including golf,
learning new things, photography
and playing trumpet at church.
HISTORY OF THE IGEF
MARY I. FITZGERALD
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
IGEF was established in 1992 to assist
youth with ties to the grocery industry
achieve their dreams of obtaining a
higher education. The IGEF Scholarship
program was renamed the Mary I.
Fitzgerald Scholarship Program in
1997 in tribute to Mary I. Fitzgerald,
who guided the Iowa Grocery Industry
Association from 1964 to 1981.
Since 2001, IGEF has helped
approximately 1,700 youth obtain a
post-secondary education, awarding
1,770 scholarships, totaling more
than $2.6 million. These scholarships
paved the way for youth to achieve
their ultimate career goals within
and outside of the grocery industry.
Many of the deserving young people
assisted by these scholarships say that
they would not be the doctor, CEO,
nurse, teacher or business professional
they are today without the help of the
Mary I. Fitzgerald Scholarship Program.
GET INVOLVED
Two primary fundraising events make
IGEF Scholarships possible: the IGEF
Scholarship Golf Classic and the IGIA
Convention Auction. Please consider
taking part in these events and being
a part of the IGIA committees that
make these events possible. Contact
PRODUC T S
Our Iowa Products spotlight
features the many outstanding
companies that work in Iowa or
call the state home. The Iowa
Grocery Industry Association
is proud of Iowa’s grocery
retailers, producers, suppliers
and distributors for the work
they do to serve communities,
employees and customers.
AE Dairy
Des Moines, Iowa
When AE Dairy opened in Des Moines in 1930, little did we
know that decades later, we’d be one of the few remaining
family-owned dairies in the entire United States. Founded by Iver
Erickson and his childhood friend William Anderson, this east-side
dairy is still managed by third-generation Erickson family members
and employs over 350 workers whom we consider family.
The secret to AE Dairy’s success is simple: We believe goodness
takes time. That’s why we follow time-honored family recipes
and set ridiculously high standards. We use only the highestquality
milk from Iowa family farms, so it’s hours fresh when it
hits store shelves. We don’t take shortcuts. We taste each product
every Thursday to make sure it’s just right. And we’re constantly
creating new flavors and products to delight our loyal fans. After
all, our goal has always been to deliver the freshest, highestquality
dairy to our neighbors.
Sure, it may take us more time to create our milks, flavored
milks, cottage cheeses, yogurts, juices, and everyone’s holiday
obsession, egg nogs. But we believe in doing things the right
way. And that goodness can be tasted in every one of our dairy
products – over 200 and counting.
Pepsi Beverages Company
Urbandale, Iowa
The roots of PepsiCo Beverages North America (PBNA) go back to 1898,
when Caleb Bradham, an entrepreneur from New Bern, North Carolina
created Pepsi-Cola and began offering it to his pharmacy customers.
In 1965, Donald Kendall, the CEO of Pepsi-Cola, and Herman Lay, the
CEO of Frito-Lay, recognized what they called “a marriage made in
heaven,” a single company delivering perfectly-salty snacks served
alongside the best cola on earth. Their vision led to what quickly
became one of the world’s leading food and beverage companies: PepsiCo.
Prairie Farms Dairy Cheese Division, a division of farmer-owned
cooperative, Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc., is home to the Prairie Farms,
Caves of Faribault, and Shullsburg Creamery brands of specialty
cheeses. With division headquarters located in Davenport, Iowa and
cheese production facilities located in Luana, Iowa, Shullsburg and
Mindoro, Wisconsin, Rochester and Faribault, Minnesota, these plants
Cheese, Neufchatel, Gouda, sweet whey, pasteurized process cheeses,
cold pack club blends, enzyme-modified cheeses and cheese analogs.
Sazerac
Metairie, Louisiana
In 1869, Thomas H. Handy purchased the Sazerac Coffeehouse and
began to acquire and market brands of liquor. He bought out the rights
to Peychaud’s Bitters in 1873. In the 1890s his company began to bottle
and market the Sazerac cocktail, now made with rye whiskey instead
of brandy. In addition, the company operated the Sazerac Bar on Royal
Street. Later, Handy’s former secretary, C. J. O’Reilly, chartered the
Sazerac Company.
Ever since (except for a stint as a delicatessen and grocery vendor
during Prohibition), the Sazerac Company has distilled an everincreasing
line of fine spirits. Today, we are still an independent,
American, family-owned company and proud owners of many of
America’s most venerable distilling companies - Buffalo Trace Distillery,
A. Smith Bowman, Glenmore Distillery, Barton, Fleischmann, Medley
and Mr. Boston.
for licenses and permits, filing tax
returns and reports, and making
some payments. It’s a secure
portal called GovConnectIowa.
Multiple state agencies collaborated
permits, file tax returns and reports,
make payments and communicate
with the state agencies involved.
Later rollouts in this multi-year project
will simplify processes for corporate
income taxpayers, individual income
taxpayers, local government oversight
and distributions, and more.
2021 IGIA “GET
CONNECTED”
CONVENTION
After a year off due to COVID-19
precautions, the Iowa Grocery Industry
Association (IGIA) “Get Connected”
Convention was held on Sept. 1-2 in
downtown Des Moines. With more
than 200 members and their guests
in attendance, the event was an
exciting opportunity to reconnect
with long-time contacts and get to
know new industry professionals.
“It was so exciting to get our members
back together in person,” says Annie
Lallier, events and member programs
specialist for IGIA. “There were such
good conversations flowing throughout
the whole convention, especially at
the event kick-off event, between
speaker sessions and during meals.”
The event officially kicked off on
Wednesday evening with a welcome
dinner at Principal Park, including
committee recognition, live art by Kiki
Curtis, a live auction and entertainment
from the Final Mix Show Band.
Thursday programming included
industry-specific presentations on the
future of the grocery industry, a supply
chain panel discussion, legislative
update, annual meeting and member
recognition.
The day of programming included
the following sessions:
• “The Bucket List Life” keynote
by Kenyon Salo, known as the
“James Bond of Speaking.”
He highlighted three simple concepts
for living a fulfilling life journey,
including how to create phenomenal
experiences, share powerful stories
and help others along the way.
• “2021 and Beyond” by Carlos
Foodservice and
On-Premise division.
The presentation explored the path
forward for consumers’ changing
food spending behaviors, what’s
driving them and his predictions
for the foodservice industry from
an economic perspective.
• “Successful Iowa Business –
Mueller Yurgae Associates” by
Phil Yurgae, president retired
of Mueller Yurgae Associates.
He highlighted the Iowa-based food
brokerage company’s rich 46-year
history and success in the industry.
• “The Future is Here… Are You
Ready?” by Nik Modi, managing
director of RBC Capital Markets.
The session covered how the world
could look in 2021 and which
capabilities and competencies
companies should build
to be prepared.
Beyond the insightful presentations,
formal and informal networking
opportunities make the annual event
shine. Participants were invited to
start off convention early with a
convention golf tournament at Beaver
Creek Golf Course in Grimes or a
Discover Des Moines social event.
“For some newer members, this was
the first opportunity to meet fellow
industry professionals in person
after the past 1.5 years of social
distancing,” says Lallier. “The face-toface
connections are so meaningful.”
This year’s convention silent and live
auction raised $10,800. The funds
benefit the Iowa Grocer Education
$2,000 scholarships to high school
PROGRAMS
It’s in the Bag
Paper, plastic or reusable? Cans on
bottom, eggs on top, cold items
together. The pressure was on as
16 of the state’s top grocery baggers
competed in the 34th Annual Best
Bagger Contest presented by Iowa
Grocery Industry Association (IGIA).
“The contest is a fun grocery
tradition,” says Annie Lallier, events
and member programs specialist for
IGIA. “It always draws a big crowd
of spectators, the audience really
gets into cheering on participants.”
Held at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater
during the Iowa State Fair, contestants
are asked to bag identical grocery
sets consisting of approximately
35 commonly purchased items
into three reusable bags. Each
is scored and ranked on weight
distribution among bags, speed
and proper item arrangement.
All non-perishable food items used in
the competition are donated to the
Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines.
SUCCESSFUL IOWA BUSINESS
FOUNDRY DISTILLING CO.
Innovates
Local
Craft
Spirits
While building a national
spirits brand is almost
impossible in today’s
marketplace, there are
endless opportunities to
create something new in
the spirits industry.
For Scott Bush, “something new”
is Foundry Distilling Company
– a world-class distillery that
delivers innovative partnerships,
experiences and products.
Founded in June 2018, the oneof-a-kind
distillery is located
at The Foundry in the heart of
historic Valley Junction in West
Des Moines.
“I like to say we are the most
innovative distillery in the world,”
says Bush, who owns and
operates Foundry Distilling Co.
“It has been a lot of fun to dream
up what this business can be for
ourselves, our community and
our customers.”
IOWA PRODUCTS ISSUE 2021 | 49

INNOVATIVE LOCAL DISTILLERY
Foundry Distilling Co. was
established with the flexibility to
produce any spirit – from vodka
to whiskey – in large or small
batches. It offers a core Foundry
Collection, Heritage Collection
as well as specialty products.
Centerpiece to the operation is
a 29-foot-tall, 30-inch-diameter
column still that was designed and
built in Iowa. The still is estimated to
be among the top five in America on
a throughput basis. It is also home to
a 500-gallon copper pot still that was
also designed and built here in Iowa.
Beyond straightforward spirit
production, the distillery offers
a private barrel program where
individuals and groups come in and
make their own barrel of whiskey.
The experience is part educational,
but also a good marketing or
celebration opportunity.
“People absolutely love it, it’s a
huge hit,” Bush says. “While it is
ultimately about making whiskey,
it’s also an opportunity to build
relationships and get to know people
in the central Iowa community.”
Foundry Distilling Co. also offers
a Brewer-Distiller Alliance, where
the team collaborates with local
and national breweries to further
process beloved beer recipes into
whiskey. The brewers produce
wort, which is then fermented,
distilled and aged in new, charred
oak barrels at the distillery.
“We’re working with some of
the best breweries to create a
collection of the most unique and
interesting whiskeys,” Bush says.
PANDEMIC PIVOT TO HAND SANITIZER
During the beginning of the COVID-19
pandemic, Foundry Distilling Co.
pivoted its distilling operation
to produce hand sanitizer.
“ We simply
found
ourselves in
a position
where we could
be helpful.
It wasn’t
something
to make
money, just
goodwill and
relationships
in our
community.”
SCOTT BUSH
Foundry Distilling Co.
For five weeks, the team offered bottles
of hand sanitizer to community members
for free. They then coordinated with
Hy-Vee and Fareway to get hand sanitizer
in distribution channels statewide.
FOUNDRY DISTILLING CO. IS LOCATED IN
THE FOUNDRY NEAR HISTORIC VALLEY
JUNCTION IN WEST DES MOINES.
HISTORY IN THE CRAFT
SPIRITS INDUSTRY
Bush’s grandfather was from
Templeton and an original
“entrepreneur” during Prohibition.
Inspired by family stories of
spirit-making and a passion for
entrepreneurship, Bush began
Templeton Rye while in business
school in Boston in 2002. At the
time, he knew little about the alcohol
industry, but it was right as the craft
spirits movement was taking off.
“We had a lot of success building
the brand nationwide. We created a
top-notch product that has become
a household name,” Bush explains.
Over the years, Bush and
others on the Foundry Distilling
Co. team have interacted and
collaborated with hundreds of
experts across the industry. The
shared perspective and collective
knowledge are reflected in the
quality of their products.
DELIVERING WORLD-CLASS
PRODUCT TO IOWA SHOPPERS
Foundry Distilling Co. sells
products in grocery stores and
convenience stores across Iowa.
“We’ve had good support bringing
one or two of our products to
the decision makers at stores
statewide,” Bush says. “We appreciate
their willingness to choose and
support local businesses.”
Recently, its product “The Real
Stuff” has started to make
headwind at retailers. The spirit
is made using a recreation of
the process farmers used in the
Depression Era to make whiskeys.
Looking ahead, Foundry Distilling
Co. is focused on continuing to
educate general customers in Iowa
about their business and products.
Bush believes there is endless
opportunity for Iowa spirits, and
there’s no reason local brands can’t
compete with national names.
Cylinder Express makes it easy. Just unlock, exchange, collect! Call 888.365.1241
At Cylinder Express, we take your
business personally. A call to us means
always being greeted by a person, not an
automated message. It means never running
out of cylinders so you can advertise a special
on propane with complete confidence that
your customers will always find a propane
tank at your store. It means value, quality and
service. It means we treat you like family.
Value — Offering your customers grill
cylinder cages provides your business with
an excellent additional source of income and
increased traffic flow.
Quality — Each cylinder tank that arrives at our
state-of-the-art facilities is carefully inspected,
scraped, cleaned and painted to ensure it’s like new
for your customer.
Service — A friendly team member will assist you
right away, not an automated system. Run ads with
confidence. We deliver weekly or bi-weekly, based
on your need for product.
