CHAIRMAN’S message
Taking Pride in Membership ROI
2022 has been a banner year for the
Iowa Grocery Industry Association
(IGIA). I’m proud of the historic
accomplishments, incremental
improvements and new conversations
the entire association – including the
board of directors, staff and member
companies – have taken on throughout
my term as board chairman. The
collective hard work and passion has
helped push the return on investment
for IGIA members to new heights.
Our members have high expectations
for our association. That’s because IGIA
has demonstrated strong leadership
and influence across Iowa’s grocery
and convenience store industry
since its founding in 1899. We’ve
positioned ourselves as a relevant,
trusted and valued resource for
not only our members but also the
communities our industry serves and
the people we employ. Membership
has always delivered important
benefits, but I believe we have grown
what it means to belong to IGIA.
ASSOCIATION IN ACTION
In March, IGIA launched a new
networking event series called Cocktails
& Conversations, which invites members
to connect in an informal social setting.
Thanks to the engagement of our
membership and vision of the planning
committee and staff, the March and June
events have been a hit. We’ve heard
over and over that the opportunity
to talk face-to-face is so impactful
and enjoyable, especially coming off
a few years of social distancing.
This year also delivered the historic
passage of the amended “Bottle Bill”
SF 2378. After decades of collective
action at the statehouse, our lobbyists,
members and staff worked with
legislators to get the bill across the
finish line and signed into law. While
this accomplishment is an opportunity
for great celebration, we know that a
new phase of work begins to ensure
members have the tools needed
to adapt to the updated legislation
in a way that is beneficial for their
businesses, employees and customers.
I’m excited to share that we are in
the early stages of forming a Human
Resources Task Force subcommittee at
IGIA. This group will address ongoing
challenges in how we recruit and retain
employee talent across the grocery
and convenience store industry. I plan
to bring a lens of diversity, equity and
inclusion to this initiative to ensure we
are lifting all voices in our workforces
and communities statewide.
The upcoming IGIA Get Connected
Convention in Coralville on Sept. 12
and 13 is an exciting opportunity
for members to make the most
of their investment in IGIA. No
matter your role, attendees will
benefit from the variety of industryspecific
education, discussion and
networking opportunities. There’s
no doubt you will come away from
the conference with meaningful
perspectives and connections.
CELEBRATING INDUSTRY LEADERS
This year also marks the return of the
annual Hall of Fame Dinner on the
evening of Sept. 13 in Coralville. After
a two-year break due to COVID-19
precautions, we will again join to
recognize and celebrate industry
leaders. These award winners are
deserving of our utmost respect as
they have dedicated their careers
and personal lives to furthering
our industry. You can get to know
this year’s Hall of Fame award
recipients throughout this issue
of the iowa grocer magazine.
I want to personally thank our
members, board of directors, staff and
all other supporters of the association
for making this year possible. It has
been a great honor to serve as your
board chairman. I am proud of where
we have been and look forward to
where IGIA is headed in the future.
What do the Hall of Fame
awards mean to you?
The Hall of Fame awards are such
a great way to give back to our
members and show appreciation
for all they do for our industry,
communities and the association.
amazing to watch the award
prestigious awards during the Hall
How are you inspired by the
Hall of Fame award winners?
My grandfather, John Comer, won
the Lifetime Achievement award in
1999 before retiring from Hy-Vee
in 2000. He passed away last year,
but the character he brought to his
work as well as his personal life is a
lasting legacy for me and my family.
I often meet people in the food and
grocery world who have a connection
to my Papa and they share with me
the impact he had on their career or
their family. Hall of Fame winners are
HARD WORK, FAMILY AND LOCAL VALUES DRIVE DECADES OF SUCCESS
HALL OF fame
With hard work and a humble
sense of pride, Steve Grolmus
built North Scott Foods from
the ground up 20 years ago. But beyond
the four walls of the store, his constant
example of servant leadership, family
values and vision for local economic
development has created positive
momentum for his entire community.
“I’m proud of what we’ve built,” Grolmus
says. “We are always looking for ways
to continuously improve how we serve
our customers and community.”
Located in Eldridge, the family-owned
and operated independent grocer
is located in the North Scott district
which is home to about 6,700 people.
It employs around 80 full and parttime
team members ranging from
high school students to long-tenured
supervisors, making it one of the
larger employers in the community.
“I think I’m tough but fair,” he says. “I
push employees to grow and always
try to give them the flexibility
they need to be successful.”
Thanks to this leadership approach,
employees work hard across the
operation and are inspired to
demonstrate friendly customer
service. They go above and beyond for
customers, offering to carry groceries
to the car and deliver groceries
directly to customers’ homes each
week. The team also coordinates
a regular grocery delivery to an
assisted living facility in the area.
“Our employees are great. They all step
up and have allowed us to gain a lot of
local support, especially during tough
times like the pandemic,” he says.
Another point of pride for Grolmus
is that you wouldn’t know the fullservice
grocery store’s building
is 20 years old. He is continually
finding ways to improve the facility
through ongoing maintenance
projects, regular floor waxing and
investing in modern amenities such
as automatic checkout options.
CONTINUING A FAMILY
GROCERY LEGACY
Grolmus’ experience in the grocery
business began when his parents moved
their family of seven to Williamsburg to
open an independent grocery store in
1973. His dad Jack managed the store’s
operations and cut meat in the early
days, and his mom JoAnn managed the
store’s bakery. Grolmus began working
at the store when he turned 14 years old
and continued until he left for college.
While studying business administration
and accounting at AIB College of
Business in Des Moines, he took a parttime
job at a small grocer in Des Moines
and would occasionally come home
to work weekends with his parents.
“When I graduated from AIB in 1984,
I had my mind set on continuing
my education in finance at Drake
University,” he shares. “But at about
the same time, my dad called with an
opportunity to manage our family’s
store in Parkview. I told him I’d try it
for a while, but I never looked back.”
He quickly learned the ropes of
managing the Parkview grocery store
while working alongside his father.
Throughout his journey in the grocery
industry, Grolmus has been incredibly
passionate about honoring his parents’
legacy of hard work and family values,
both in the small, day-to-day moments
and the overall attitude he brings.
“The grocery business is my mom and
dad’s legacy. Without them I wouldn’t
be here today,” Grolmus says.
Jack passed away in 1993. He is honored
each year through the Jack Grolmus
Memorial Scholarship administered by
the Iowa Grocers Education Foundation,
PRIORITIZING FAMILY THROUGH
DECADES OF HARD WORK
Over the years, the entire Grolmus
family has been involved in growing
the business. He and his wife Julie
worked side-by-side both at the
Parkview store and North Scott Foods,
with Julie often working nights and
him working days. All three of their
children worked at the store while
in high school and today their oldest
son Andy is the store director, their
middle daughter Ali is a nurse and their
youngest son Steve works in accounting.
“It is and always has been a family
affair,” Grolmus explains. “I have fond
memories of our youngest son and
daughter sleeping in the office while
we were working hard to get the store
off the ground. Our success wouldn’t
be possible without my wife and kids.”
Grolmus is beloved by his wife and
children – they are his biggest fans.
Over the years he has always prioritized
his family, offering endless support,
cheering them on and showing up
fully no matter the circumstance. He
was a dedicated youth sports coach
for almost 20 years, never missing a
practice or game for his kids’ variety of
activities. Today, he enjoys spending
his free time with his family and
friends, traveling and fishing, as well
as cheering on the Chicago Cubs and
attending Iowa Hawkeye football games.
FURTHERING THE IOWA
GROCERY INDUSTRY
Grolmus’ commitment to continuous
improvement extends beyond his store
and the North Scott community. Thanks
to his leadership with the Iowa Grocery
Industry Association (IGIA), he has also
been influential in advancing the entire
Iowa grocery industry and raising the
voice of independent grocers. He has
served on the board since 2014 and was
board chairman in the 2019-2020 term.
“Being involved with IGIA is a way that
I can give back to the industry I grew
up in and had given us so much. I want
to do whatever I can to support the
industry and the association,” he says. “I
will continue to serve as long I can.”
During his role as board chairman, he
helped the association and its members
navigate COVID-19 uncertainties,
including changing regulations, supply
chain disruptions, employment
challenges and health protocols.
He has also been heavily involved
in the association’s Government
CELEBRATING A CAREER THAT SHARPENED RETAIL INNOVATION,
ADVANCED THE GROCERY INDUSTRY
22 IOWA GROCER MAGAZINE
HALL OF fame
With a brain for business,
an intuition for decisionmaking
and a connection to
employees, Jay Marshall helped chart
the course for Hy-Vee throughout his
remarkable 39-year career. Across his
variety of roles in retail and corporate
leadership, he demonstrated time and
time again the ability to use innovation
and hard work to move a vision forward.
Marshall was a trusted and respected
leader at Hy-Vee and his contributions
are recognized across the entire
grocery industry. He retired from
his role as vice chairman and
president of Hy-Vee supply chain and
subsidiaries in December 2021.
“I was fortunate to understand this
company from the ground level
and am forever grateful for the
experiences Hy-Vee gave me,” he
says. “It is hard to leave because of the
people, but it’s important for me to
move on so other people can grow.”
ROOTS IN RETAIL DELIVER
FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES
Marshall’s Hy-Vee journey began as
a 16-year-old, part-time employee at
the Des Moines Save U More, a former
brand owned and operated by the
retailer. Two of his older siblings had
worked at the store, so he knew it would
be a good opportunity to earn money
while staying focused on school and
activities at Dowling Catholic High School.
“My parents worked hard to raise nine
children and put us all through private
Catholic education,” he explains. “Once
the kids in our family turned 16 years
old, it was a tradition to get a job and
help contribute to our close-knit family.”
Like six of his siblings, Marshall
continued his education at Creighton
University in Omaha. Along with
studying psychology and business
management, he was part of the cross
country team and Sigma Nu fraternity.
While his schedule was already
jam-packed with coursework and
extracurricular activities, he worked
mid-shift on Fridays, Saturdays and
Sundays at the Hy-Vee Council Bluffs
1 store throughout this college years.
This experience really solidified his
respect for the retailer’s culture
and commitment to employees.
“My store was really focused on keeping
me in school. They were invested
in my education even though at the
time it wasn’t in the plans for me
to continue working at Hy-Vee,” he
explains. “I remember one instance
where I needed to miss a shift because
of a group project. I hated to ask my
manager for the time off, but he quickly
responded with ‘Make sure you get an
A on the project, that’s all I care about.’”
Upon graduation, Marshall considered
a variety of full-time retail positions
with major food companies and brands.
Ultimately, he realized he really liked
what he was doing with Hy-Vee and
decided to pursue a shift management
opportunity in 1989. Over the next
decade, he moved through a variety of
store management positions in Council
Bluffs 1 & 2 stores and took on his first
store director role in Olathe, Kansas.
Thanks to the mentorship and
continued push from Olathe senior
vice president Charlie Bell, Marshall
took on the opportunity to serve as
store director for the Omaha 1 store in
1999. The move brought him and his
wife Brenda closer to family and the
leadership opportunity was a formative
experience. Beyond making thoughtful
business decisions that would
help grow the business, he always
made sure employees felt valued.
“The opportunity to lead these
stores was sobering. I took the
magnitude of the responsibility
seriously,” he says. “Not only did
I need to ensure employees had
secure, good jobs, but I also wanted to
make sure they loved being at work.”
BRAIN FOR BUSINESS AND
GUT INSTINCT SHAPE CAREER
In 2006, Marshall was promoted to
assistant vice president of operations
for the northwestern district. Based in
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, this role was
a bridge between retail and corporate.
He relied on a “sell not tell” strategy
to help build relationships across his
30-store region, helping store directors
execute the company vision to improve
their operations and bottom line.
His mind for business and ability to
get things done stood out in this role,
gaining the attention of top leadership at
Hy-Vee. Soon he was tapped to take on a
newly created position of vice president
of center store at the corporate
office in West Des Moines in 2008.
“No one had really studied center store
before – it was inconsistent and based
on the gut of each store director,” he
explains. “I was tasked with studying
purchase data and working with
suppliers to develop a science for center
store merchandising that could be
used consistently across all stores.”
His ability to meld instinct with hard
data paid off, helping ensure no
money was left on the table. Marshall
was continually challenged by Randy
Edeker, chairman and CEO, as well as
former chairman and CEO Ric Jurgens,
to run with ideas, study outcomes and
deliver results. His success earned him
additional layers of opportunities to
evaluate merchandising across other
departments and other strategic projects.
“The leadership looking at me gave me
confidence in navigating these new
challenges,” he says. “I trusted the
company. They believed in me and my
skills, so I believed I could do it too.”
About the Lifetime Achievement Award
The IGIA board created this award in 1999 out of a desire to honor those individuals who have left
an indelible mark on the grocery industry. Reserved for the industry’s greatest leaders, this award
recognizes those who have given a lifetime of outstanding service to their companies, their
industry and their communities.
The committee considers the nominee’s lasting impacts on the grocery industry, company or employees.
Also considered is innovative work that has improved the work environment, contributed to employee
or consumer health, promoted community growth or forwarded positive environmental/sustainability
goals; contributions to other industry-related professional organizations; years of grocery industry
involvement; membership and participation in IGIA; and a long history of superior customer
service and community involvement.
The award is not to be given out lightly. The award standards have been set so high that
this award is not given every year.
“I’m grateful and honored to receive this Lifetime Achievement award from my
industry peers. I don’t see myself as deserving. I simply helped my company.”
JAY MARSHALL, HY-VEE
Throughout his tenure in the corporate
office, Marshall took on a variety of
roles including senior vice president
of merchandising, chief retail officer
and chief operating officer. In 2018, he
became vice chairman and president
of supply chain and subsidiaries.
Because the grocery business is so
conservative, with retailers earning
an estimated $0.01 for every $1 spent,
it has been important for Hy-Vee to
continue to innovate with no room
for error. He helped find new ways
to improve bottom line, including
embracing private label brands,
developing the program structure
as well as the Casey’s partnership
for the Hy-Vee Fuel Saver program
and spinning up manufacturing
businesses that modernized food
production for safety and efficiency.
“I didn’t always know the answers,
but I asked the right questions
and helped leaders make the
best decisions,” he says. “I had to
understand the different components
and find a way to make it work.”
VALUES AND SUCCESS
BEYOND THE OFFICE
Marshall was honored with the
Chairman’s Humanitarian Award in
2021. This is the highest recognition
in the company and is selectively
given by the chairman to individuals
who have “done everything right,
in the right increment, at the right
time and put Hy-Vee first.”
“It was a huge honor to receive
this award, especially while I
was still working,” he explains. “I
was dumbfounded because it
is such an awesome honor that
solidified my Hy-Vee experience.”
He was also inducted into the
Hy-Vee Hall of Fame in 2004 and 2021.
Beyond serving Hy-Vee, Marshall
has been instrumental in a variety of
community and industry organizations.
He worked with the operations
committee for Topco, a collective
group of grocery companies that
band together for better buying
power when procuring private
label. He also volunteered with
Variety – The Children’s Charity,
Iowa Grocery Industry Association
board, Coca-Cola Retailing Research
Council and currently is on the Board
of Trustees for Simpson College.
Throughout his career, Marshall has
been a dedicated husband to Brenda,
his wife of 29 years, and father to his
three daughters. He always made
time to be present, cheering on their
extracurricular activities, attending
collegiate “Dad’s Days” and spending
time at Lake Panorama as a family. He
is incredibly proud of his daughters –
Claire lives in Kansas City and works
remotely for Meyocks, Paige lives in
Des Moines and works in marketing
for Hy-Vee, and Grace is studying
nursing at the University of Kansas.
In retirement, he is enjoying extra
time with his family, relaxing at the
lake, putting miles on his road bike
and testing out gravel biking and
mountain biking. He participated in
RAGBRAI this summer, continuing
a family tradition that started in
his childhood with his parents.
“None of this would be possible
without the support of my wife
and girls,” Marshall shares. “They
They are the true blessing.”

HALL OF FAME ISSUE 2022 25
HALL OF fame
With a quiet superpower to
listen, analyze and consider
many angles before
making decisions, Mike Skokan was
instrumental in guiding Hy-Vee’s success
throughout his outstanding 35-year
career. Across his variety of corporate
auditing, accounting and financial roles,
his problem-solving skills allowed the
company to deliver on its promise to
make lives easier, healthier and happier.
journey, the experience gave him
valuable perspective about how
the company treated employees.
“The years working in retail were
invaluable,” he explains. “Not only did it
help me know that I wanted to continue
to work for Hy-Vee, but it also gave me
the perspective that helped me try to
make the best decisions for employees
and customers down the road.”
president Ric Jurgens, as well as current
chairman and CEO Randy Edeker.
One transformative project Skokan took
on in the early 2000s was transitioning
all stores from a third-party payment
system to an in-house system. This
move allowed the company to choose
where to process transactions, creating
streamlined payments and efficiencies
that benefited Hy-Vee directly. The
system is still operational today.
Skokan was an impactful and respected
leader at Hy-Vee. He carefully and
efficiently guided the company in
protecting the interests of its employees
while also pushing for unparalleled
growth. He retired from his role as
executive vice president, CFO and
treasurer in December 2021.
“I believe in working hard, focusing on
the job in front of you and letting the
rest take care of itself,” he says. “We
have a solid team in place that won’t
miss a beat as I move into retirement.”
PERSPECTIVE FROM RETAIL,
PASSION FOR ACCOUNTING
Hard work has been a common thread
throughout Skokan’s life. Growing
up, his parents both demonstrated a
strong work ethic and commitment
to volunteering. He watched his
father build a business as a certified
public accountant (CPA) in West Des
Moines, and his mother stayed home
to raise Skokan and his younger
brother, later working as a paralegal
in a local law office once the boys
were grown. In their free time, the
Skokans enjoyed spending time at
their family’s farm outside of Newton.
When Skokan turned 16 years old, he
took a part-time courtesy clerk and
checker-stocker job at the West Des
Moines Grand Avenue Hy-Vee. He
continued to work part time at the Cedar
Falls store while studying accounting
at the University of Northern Iowa
(UNI). Even though working retail
was only a few years of his Hy-Vee
While Skokan was inspired by his dad’s
career as a CPA, he always wanted to
forge his own path in the profession.
Upon graduating from UNI in 1992 and
earning his certified public accountant
license, he weighed public and private
accounting career options. He ultimately
decided to take an internal auditing
position with Hy-Vee Corporate
in Chariton, where the company
was headquartered at the time.
Skokan says it was during these early
years in the auditing department that he
learned the importance of relationships,
especially on a team. His manager at
the time, Juli Hurst (Egeland) taught
him valuable lessons in understanding
people’s motivations and how to
navigate interpersonal relationships.
Hy-Vee relocated its headquarters
to West Des Moines in 1995, and
later that year Skokan moved to the
company’s accounting department. In
the coming years, he rose through the
financial ranks, taking on a variety of
positions and seizing opportunities to
gain a bigger picture point of view.
“I wasn’t siloed into just looking at debits
and credits,” he explains. “They gave
me involvement across all aspects of
the company so I could understand
how things worked together and
contribute on a higher level.”
He also got the opportunity to
learn about leadership from former
chairman, CEO and president Ron
Pearson, former chairman, CEO and
“I’ve always enjoyed a challenge. No
matter the project, failure was
not an option,” he explains.
VISION FOR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
In 2011, Skokan was named senior
vice president, CFO, treasurer and a
permanent member of the Hy-Vee
Board of Directors. In 2013, he was
elected to executive vice president,
CFO and treasurer. In these leadership
roles, he was especially influential in
shaping employee benefits. He took
to heart the words of Jurgens, “If you
have the ability to do good, then you
have a responsibility to do good.”
Skokan helped champion a variety of
employee-centric initiatives, including
offering expanded parental leave,
expanding benefits coverage to parttime
employees and implementing a
10% employee discount. For decades he
worked diligently to shape the company’s
401(k) plan, evolving benefits and
matching and vesting programs to ensure
it is a sustainable retirement benefit for
employees. He also implemented several
bonuses to recognize performance
at all levels across the company.
“We want to be sure Hy-Vee is the best
place to work so we can attract and
retain the best employees,” he says.
“Creating a secure, competitive job for our
employees was always at the forefront
of my decisions and recommendations.”
This sentiment also applies to how
he treated his co-workers and team
members over the years. He always
emphasized the importance of family,

Skokan was a trusted problem solver
who helped guide the company’s
financial growth though the evolution
of the grocery industry. He attributes
much of this success to his ability
to listen openly and understand
that he’s not always right.
During the uncertainties of the COVID-19
pandemic, he worked alongside
the board and executive leadership
team to navigate unprecedented
challenges in the industry, such as
keeping employees safe, keeping
stores delivering for customers and
subsequent workforce issues.
He worked closely with Edeker to find
ways to do more, do better and ensure
Hy-Vee remains relevant and influential
in the future. Edeker challenged him to
take his role from a traditionally behindthe-scenes
accounting responsibility
and shape it into a partnership to make
business decisions and understand
the entire company’s operations.
Over the past few years, Skokan
worked closely with his successor
Andy Schreiner to set the team up
for success during his transition into
retirement. They collaborated on
challenges, bouncing ideas off one
to navigate difficult situations.
LASTING LEGACY
BEYOND THE OFFICE
Skokan was inducted into the Hy-Vee
his leadership at the company. The
nomination is made by a group of
he says. “Clearly the company has
been a big part of their lives over the
years and to see them embrace it
About the
Lifetime
Achievement
Award
The IGIA board created this award in 1999
out of a desire to honor those individuals
who have left an indelible mark on
the grocery industry. Reserved for the
industry’s greatest leaders, this award
recognizes those who have given a lifetime
of outstanding service to their companies,
their industry and their communities.
The committee considers the nominee’s
lasting impacts on the grocery industry,
company or employees. Also considered
is innovative work that has improved
the work environment, contributed to
employee or consumer health, promoted
community growth or forwarded
positive environmental/sustainability
goals; contributions to other industryrelated
professional organizations;
years of grocery industry involvement;
membership and participation in IGIA
and a long history of superior customer
service and community involvement.
The award is not to be given out lightly.
The award standards have been set so high
that this award is not given every year.
“I’m humbled and honored to
receive this Lifetime Achievement
award. As someone who is
typically behind the scenes, it’s a
mix of emotions to be recognized,
but I am truly thankful.”
A HEART FOR SERVING OTHERS AND LIFTING UP THE GROCERY INDUSTRY
Volunteer of the Year:
Andrea Chase, Fareway Stores
A HEART FOR SERVING OTHERS AND LIFTING UP THE GROCERY INDUSTRY
The Chase family, Andrea, Bryan, Madison and Isabelle.
Chase is the chair of the IGIA Women’s Network.
About the Volunteer of the Year Award
The IGIA board began awarding a Volunteer of the Year in 2004 to distinguish one IGIA member each
year who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the association and its members through
volunteerism. The ideal candidate is a member in good standing of the association
and exhibits a high level of involvement in and service to IGIA.
“This award is incredibly humbling and a big surprise because there
are so many others who are worthy. To be recognized challenges
me to think about what else I can do – how can I inspire others
to serve, bring awareness to causes and make a difference.”
ANDREA CHASE, FAREWAY STORES
HALL OF fame
Volunteering has opened a new
world for Andrea Chase.
By seizing opportunities to give
back, she’s become acutely aware
of the needs across the community.
This awareness has moved her to
keep doing more for others, always
raising her hand to lend her time
and rally volunteers for a cause.
“Sometimes when things are going well
in our lives, we forget about the real
need that others may be experiencing,”
says Chase, who is the vice president of
category management at Fareway Stores.
“But I’ve found that once the blinders
come off, opportunities to reprioritize
and serve others present themselves.”
Chase’s passion for serving others has
blossomed since returning to Iowa
in 2015 after spending more than 20
years working and raising her family
in the Kansas City area. This growth
has been sparked in part by joining
Fareway’s culture of community service
and the company’s encouragement to
get involved in industry organizations.
“I’ve been exposed to a lot of important
causes through Fareway,” she explains.
“Then it really is a snowball effect. The
more I become aware, the more and
more I want to do to serve others.”
MELDING GROCERY
AND COMMUNITY
Chase first became involved with the
Iowa Grocery Industry Association (IGIA)
as part of the 2016 Leadership Institute.
She soon after joined the IGIA
Women’s Network and was inspired
by the layering of skill building,
insights, networking and community
service the program offered. During
each of the group’s events, there
is an opportunity to participate in a
service activity, such as delivering
meals with the Urban Bicycle Food
Ministry or assembling period packs
to benefit Give Grace, Give Hope.
“To stand side-by-side with other
women in the industry, joining together
to give back is just an incredible
experience,” Chase explains. “I always
hear feedback from members that
the service component is such a
powerful part of the program.”
Chase continued to grow her
involvement in the association over the
next few years, being elected to the
board of directors in 2019 and serving
as chair of the IGIA Women’s Network
in 2021 and 2022. By volunteering in
these leadership roles, she gives fully –
always opening her calendar, sharing
ideas and enthusiasm to advance the
association and entire grocery industry.
“IGIA has broadened my perspective
on the entire industry,” she says.
“Our supply chain and businesses
are so intertwined; I believe there
are endless ways we can work
together to lift one another up.”
BRINGING DIVERSE
GROCERY PERSPECTIVE
Chase began her grocery career
journey as a part-time cashier at
SuperValu in West Des Moines during
high school. She made her way to
Northwest Missouri State University to
study marketing and her first job upon
graduation in 1995 was a temporary
position at Associated Wholesale
Grocers (AWG) in Kansas City.
For the next 20 years, Chase called AWG
home – navigating a variety of positions
in procurement, shelf management
and category management in grocery,
dairy and frozen as well as bakery/
deli and processed/frozen meat.
In 2015, she took an opportunity as
a buyer at Fareway, later advancing
through a variety of other positions
including director of category
management and assistant vice
president of category management. In
2018, she accepted her current role of
vice president of category management.
“My career path has allowed me to
continue to grow as an individual
and challenge myself in what I can
contribute to the company,” she says.
PRIORITIZING FAMILY AND
CAUSES THAT INSPIRE
While Chase casts a wide net for giving
back, she is especially pulled to the
Ronald McDonald House Charities
of Central Iowa, where she currently
serves as a committee chair. She also
feels deeply connected to the work
of the Food Bank of Iowa. “Maybe it’s
being in the grocery industry, but the
food bank’s work in feeding people
and nourishing families is really
important to me,” she explains.
Family has been instrumental in
shaping her career and time outside
of the office. The decision to move
back to Iowa in 2015 was spurred by
a desire to be closer to her in-laws
in the Minneapolis area and her
parents in the Des Moines area.
Chase enjoys spending time with
her husband Bryan, who works as
an engineer at Casey’s, and two
daughters, Madison and Isabelle.
Madison is a senior at Iowa State
University and Isabelle is a junior at
Waukee Northwest High School.
Supplier of the Year: Bernatello’s Foods
SUPPLYING COMFORT, HAPPINESS AND A GREAT PIZZA EXPERIENCE
32 IOWA GROCER MAGAZINE
HALL OF fame
Pizza brings people together. It’s a
conduit for community – unifying
and equalizing people across
families, workplaces and neighborhoods.
While Bernatello’s Foods has been in the
frozen pizza manufacturing business
since 1982, owners and employees
really see it as a people business.
time to get to know store managers
and freezer case managers.
“We want to learn how to serve their
store best,” says Selvig. “It’s more
than just talking about product,
we also want to make genuine
connections and show we care.”
“We know people are our greatest
asset, so it’s in our culture to put
employees, retailers and customers
first every single day,” says Matt Selvig,
Advertising and Promotions Manager
for Bernatello’s. “Treating people right
has allowed us to create great products
and grow into a household name.”
The Minnesota-based company
is owned and operated by two
generations of the Ramsay family. What
started as a back-room tavern pizza
company has strategically expanded
to now produce six brands of frozen
pizzas, including Brew Pub Lotzza
Motzza, Bellatoria, Orv’s, Roma, Pizza
Corner and Hangry Bear brands.
Bernatello’s is powered by more
than 500 employees between
manufacturing facilities in Minnesota
and Wisconsin and a sales team across
the Midwest. It distributes to retailers
across the upper Midwest and also
has warehouse business in western
and southwest regions of the U.S.
PRIORITIZING RETAILER
RELATIONSHIPS
The supplier has a direct store delivery
program which includes going into
stores, stocking shelves and making
sure the freezer looks sharp. This
service is an important value-add for
stores choosing to carry Bernatello’s
products – especially as retailers
navigate the challenges of limited
staffing and supply chain uncertainty.
In addition to stocking product,
the Bernatello’s sales team takes
This people-first approach and handson
service contributed to Bernatello’s
nomination and selection for the
Iowa Grocery Industry Association
(IGIA) Supplier of the Year award.
BUILDING THE BREW
PUB PIZZA BRAND WITH
CHEESE AND GOODWILL
Bernatello’s has focused on building the
Brew Pub Lotzza Motzza Pizza Brand
in recent years. The line of frozen pizza
is specifically made with the hungry in
mind. Each pizza is made with premium
meats and veggies and is topped with
more than a half pound of awardwinning
Wisconsin Mozzarella cheese.
According to Selvig, once even the pickiest
frozen pizza connoisseurs try a slice they
are “wowed” by the flavor and quality.
“It is so delicious it just takes one piece
to get people on board,” he explains.
“That’s why we do a lot of guerrilla
marketing and sampling events.”
Some of the marketing activities
bring the Brew Pub Pizza trailer to
events across their distribution region,
including Iowa. Often, the Bernatello’s
team will hand out free slices at
community or non-profit events asking
only for freewill donations that can
be sent to a local charity of choice.
“Whenever there’s an opportunity
to help others, Bernatello’s will be
there,” Selvig says. “Our company is
genuinely dedicated to lifting up local
communities and charities, and we’re
especially passionate about supporting
veterans and law enforcement officers.”
About the
Supplier of
the Year
The IGIA board of directors created
this award in 1987 to distinguish
one supplier that demonstrates an
outstanding commitment to the
association and its members. It is
reserved for companies that go above
and beyond to foster retail success
through outstanding customer service
and marketing or merchandizing
assistance. The ideal candidate is
a member in good standing of the
association that exhibits a high level
of involvement in and service to IGIA.
“It’s a huge honor to be
recognized by peers in
the industry who value
the work we’re doing. Our
team is proud to be a part
of the association and
will continue to develop
relationships with our valued
partners across Iowa.”
38 IOWA GROCER MAGAZINE
BY GREG FERRARA, PRESIDENT AND CEO
OF THE NATIONAL GROCERS ASSOCIATION
he mission of the National
Grocers Association (NGA) is to
ensure independent, communityfocused
retailers and wholesalers the
opportunity to succeed and better
serve the consumer through its policies,
advocacy, programs and services.
To accomplish that mission, we have a
small but dedicated staff that, among
other tasks, works with policymakers
in Washington and makes known the
impact of our members on the local
economies in their home districts;
promotes leadership development;
generates educational content to
advance our members’ knowledge;
and shares our members’ stories
with trade and mass media.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVES ACTION
Our staffers may be in the trenches,
but we get our marching orders
from our membership. NGA is a
member-driven organization, led by
a board of directors comprising retail,
wholesale and supplier members.
Additionally, NGA relies on the
commitment of members who dedicate
precious hours from their busy schedules
to serve on various committees that
drive our activities all year long, from
government relations to planning our
annual conference, The NGA Show.
To be sure, NGA truly appreciates
its members who respond to our
calls to action by stepping up on
behalf of the association to lend a
human face, a voice and a story to
the commitment of independent
community grocers and their impact on
local economies across the country.
For example, in early June, NGA hosted
its Fly-In for Fair Competition, our first
in-person outreach to policymakers
in Washington, D.C., since before the
pandemic. Dozens of independent
retailers and wholesalers convened
in our nation’s capital for two
days of discussion and meetings
with legislators to argue in favor
of antitrust enforcement and
other policies designed to achieve
a common goal of enhancing
consumer access to groceries.
A NEW EXECUTIVE
CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE
Building on that success, the
NGA team is busy reinventing our
executive conference experience
for our C-suite members.
Redubbed the Executive Conference
and Public Policy Summit, this
event will include high-level
speakers delivering in-depth
industry forecasts and outlooks for
emerging economic and business
trends, along with opportunities to
strengthen relationships with trading
partners throughout the supply
chain. This summit pairs high-impact
education and networking with the
unique opportunity to meet with
federal representatives who craft
policies affecting your business.
Scheduled for Oct. 24-26, NGA
envisions this as an annual fall
event will bring together the top
industry leaders in the independent
supermarket industry for very forwardlooking
industry conversations and
collaboration. The conference is
designed for CEOs and senior level
leaders, including CEOs and presidents,
VPs, directors and senior executives
with responsibility for operations, sales
and merchandising, finance, marketing,
HR, legal, technology and logistics.
Our staffers may
be in the trenches,
but we get our
marching orders
from our
membership.”
GREG FERRARA, NGA
POLICY
Governor Signs
Bottle Bill
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed
SF 2378 – a bill modernizing Iowa’s
bottle deposit system – into law on
June 17. The governor’s signature has
brought a historic and long-fought
success for the members of the Iowa
Grocery Industry Association (IGIA).
The passage of this bill is the result
of years of cohesive work. Grocers,
convenience stores, pop and beer
distributors, and redemption centers
worked with lawmakers to ensure the
continued viability of the program and
provide needed relief for grocers and
convenience stores from a government
mandate. IGIA members helped play a
vital role in moving this issue forward
and showed the strength of our industry,
working together as one united voice.
IGIA commends the governor for
signing SF 2378 because it modernizes
the system, removes container
redemption from stores, utilizes funds
already in the system, and provides
certainty and sustainability for
redemption centers and distributors.
The new bottle bill legislation triples
the handling fee paid to redemption
centers, codifies the convenience
standard, and allows for retailers to opt
out under certain conditions (outlined
in the sidebar). It also establishes
new civil penalties and enforcement
authority and codifies unredeemed
deposits as property of distributors.
Together, these changes and more bring
efficiency to a system that lawmakers,
consumers and stakeholders have
long agreed was in need of updating.
40 IOWA GROCER MAGAZINE
“This is a memorable and historic
accomplishment for our industry!
There’s no doubt IGIA members
played a vital role in moving
this issue forward. They showed
the strength of our industry by
working together as one united
voice – a living example of the
foundation of our association.”
Michelle Hurd,
President of Iowa Grocery Industry Association
Decades in the Making
The state’s original deposit has remained
unchanged since it was passed in 1979. For
decades, IGIA, our members, lobbyists and
other stakeholders have worked cohesively
at the Iowa statehouse to modernize
the system to better serve Iowans.
SF 2378 modernizes the system, removes
container redemption from stores,
utilizes funds already in the system, and
provides certainty and sustainability for
redemption centers and distributors.
Convenience Standard
Effective Immediately
Much of the law goes into effect on
January 1, 2023. However, the convenience
standard takes effect immediately.
1) 10 miles for counties with
population greater than 30,000
2) 15 miles for counties with
population less than 30,000
Any retailer with a redemption center that
satisfies this convenience standard may opt
out of redeeming containers. Any retailer
who refuses to accept container returns
must conspicuously display a notice on the
front door of the business that they do not
accept containers and the location of the
nearest approved redemption center.
a brief overview of
SF 2378 *
Codifies the convenience standard:
1. 10 miles for counties with population greater than 30,000
2. 15 miles for counties with population less than 30,000
3. Effective upon enactment
4. Any retailer with a redemption center that
satisfies this convenience standard may
opt out immediately upon enactment
5. Retailers who take back containers may
also qualify as a redemption center
Allows for retailers to opt out under any of three conditions:
1. Prepared food
a) Retailer holds a food establishment license
under Chapter 137F to prepare or serve food;
b) has a certified food protection manager
as required by the FDA; and
c) sells time/temperature control for safety
food as defined in Section 137F.2.
2. Retailer has an agreement with an approved
redemption center for the operation of a mobile
redemption system and all of the following apply:
a) Retailer provides space, utilities and
internet for operation; and
b) The agreement does not require additional payment
to the retailer or the mobile redemption system.
3. Retailer is within the codified convenience standard
Any retailer who refuses to accept container returns must
conspicuously display a notice on the front door of the
business that they do not accept containers and the location
of the nearest approved redemption center. After the DNR has
an operational electronic locater available, the notice must
contain information on the electronic method of locating.
Triples the handling fee paid by distributors to
redemption centers and any retailers who continue
to accept containers (effective January 1, 2023)
Establishes new civil penalties and enforcement authority
Codifies the unredeemed deposits as
property of the distributors
HAPPY HOURS FOR MEMBER NETWORKING
PROGRAMS
Cocktails & Conversations happy hours bring
together new and longtime Iowa Grocery
Industry Association (IGIA) members in a casual,
conversation-driven atmosphere where member
networking is at the heart of the event.
These events are a great time to introduce yourself
to association peers and build connections
that you can carry into IGIA events throughout
the rest of the year and in years to come.
The first event was held on Thursday, April 14
at Gilroy’s in West Des Moines. More than 60
people attended, enjoying food and drinks and
two great hours of conversation! The second
happy hour was held Thursday, June 23 at
The Republic on Grand in Des Moines.
Find details for upcoming networking
events at iowagrocers.com/happy-hour.
Cylinder Express makes it easy. Just unlock, exchange, collect! Call 888.365.1241
At Cylinder Express, we take your
business personally. A call to us means
always being greeted by a person, not an
automated message. It means never running
out of cylinders so you can advertise a special
on propane with complete confidence that
your customers will always find a propane
tank at your store. It means value, quality and
service. It means we treat you like family.
Value — Offering your customers grill
cylinder cages provides your business with
an excellent additional source of income and
increased traffic flow.
Quality — Each cylinder tank that arrives at our
state-of-the-art facilities is carefully inspected,
scraped, cleaned and painted to ensure it’s like new
for your customer.
Service — A friendly team member will assist you
right away, not an automated system. Run ads with
confidence. We deliver weekly or bi-weekly, based
on your need for product.
