MEET the team
for Iowa’s grocery industry
Michelle Hurd, CAE
PRESIDENT
What is a highlight for the
association this year?
Charley Campbell’s leadership as
board chairman has been remarkable.
The association and staff have all
benefited from his service and vision.
All year long he has helped propel
the association forward and help
position IGIA to remain a strong and
respected voice in Iowa’s grocery
and convenience industries.
I also want to extend a heartfelt
“thank you” to our entire board for
their engagement and hard work
this year – seeing you in action truly
has been a highlight of 2022.
What do the Hall of Fame
awards mean to you?
The Hall of Fame awards are such
a great way to give back to our
members and show appreciation
for all they do for our industry,
communities and the association.
Over the years, it has been so
amazing to watch the award
recipients come with their families
and coworkers to accept the
prestigious awards during the Hall
of Fame Dinner. It clearly means
a lot for them to be honored and
it is a nice opportunity to get to
know the deserving individuals
and companies that play such an
important role in the industry.
How are you inspired by the
Hall of Fame award winners?
My grandfather, John Comer, won
the Lifetime Achievement award in
1999 before retiring from Hy-Vee
in 2000. He passed away last year,
but the character he brought to his
work as well as his personal life is a
lasting legacy for me and my family.
I often meet people in the food and
grocery world who have a connection
to my Papa and they share with me
the impact he had on their career or
their family. Hall of Fame winners are
a prime example of individuals in this
industry who bring hard work and
compassion to the people they serve.
How are you inspired by the Hall of Fame award winners?
I’m inspired by the winners because they are each so passionate about our
industry. It’s clear through the nomination and recognition process that they
truly go above and beyond expectations in their involvement with IGIA.
