CHAIRMAN’S message Taking Pride in Membership ROI 2022 has been a banner year for the Iowa Grocery Industry Association (IGIA). I’m proud of the historic accomplishments, incremental improvements and new conversations the entire association – including the board of directors, staff and member companies – have taken on throughout my term as board chairman. The collective hard work and passion has helped push the return on investment for IGIA members to new heights. Our members have high expectations for our association. That’s because IGIA has demonstrated strong leadership and influence across Iowa’s grocery and convenience store industry since its founding in 1899. We’ve positioned ourselves as a relevant, trusted and valued resource for not only our members but also the communities our industry serves and the people we employ. Membership has always delivered important benefits, but I believe we have grown what it means to belong to IGIA. ASSOCIATION IN ACTION In March, IGIA launched a new networking event series called Cocktails & Conversations, which invites members to connect in an informal social setting. Thanks to the engagement of our membership and vision of the planning committee and staff, the March and June events have been a hit. We’ve heard over and over that the opportunity to talk face-to-face is so impactful and enjoyable, especially coming off a few years of social distancing. This year also delivered the historic passage of the amended “Bottle Bill” SF 2378. After decades of collective action at the statehouse, our lobbyists, members and staff worked with legislators to get the bill across the finish line and signed into law. While this accomplishment is an opportunity for great celebration, we know that a new phase of work begins to ensure members have the tools needed to adapt to the updated legislation in a way that is beneficial for their businesses, employees and customers. I’m excited to share that we are in the early stages of forming a Human Resources Task Force subcommittee at IGIA. This group will address ongoing challenges in how we recruit and retain employee talent across the grocery and convenience store industry. I plan to bring a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion to this initiative to ensure we are lifting all voices in our workforces and communities statewide. The upcoming IGIA Get Connected Convention in Coralville on Sept. 12 and 13 is an exciting opportunity for members to make the most of their investment in IGIA. No matter your role, attendees will benefit from the variety of industryspecific education, discussion and networking opportunities. There’s no doubt you will come away from the conference with meaningful perspectives and connections. CELEBRATING INDUSTRY LEADERS This year also marks the return of the annual Hall of Fame Dinner on the evening of Sept. 13 in Coralville. After a two-year break due to COVID-19 precautions, we will again join to recognize and celebrate industry leaders. These award winners are deserving of our utmost respect as they have dedicated their careers and personal lives to furthering our industry. You can get to know this year’s Hall of Fame award recipients throughout this issue of the iowa grocer magazine. I want to personally thank our members, board of directors, staff and all other supporters of the association for making this year possible. It has been a great honor to serve as your board chairman.
