About the Volunteer of the Year Award The IGIA board began awarding a Volunteer of the Year in 2004 to distinguish one IGIA member each year who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the association and its members through volunteerism. The ideal candidate is a member in good standing of the association and exhibits a high level of involvement in and service to IGIA. “This award is incredibly humbling and a big surprise because there are so many others who are worthy. To be recognized challenges me to think about what else I can do – how can I inspire others to serve, bring awareness to causes and make a difference.” ANDREA CHASE, FAREWAY STORES
HALL OF fame Volunteering has opened a new world for Andrea Chase. By seizing opportunities to give back, she’s become acutely aware of the needs across the community. This awareness has moved her to keep doing more for others, always raising her hand to lend her time and rally volunteers for a cause. “Sometimes when things are going well in our lives, we forget about the real need that others may be experiencing,” says Chase, who is the vice president of category management at Fareway Stores. “But I’ve found that once the blinders come off, opportunities to reprioritize and serve others present themselves.” Chase’s passion for serving others has blossomed since returning to Iowa in 2015 after spending more than 20 years working and raising her family in the Kansas City area. This growth has been sparked in part by joining Fareway’s culture of community service and the company’s encouragement to get involved in industry organizations. “I’ve been exposed to a lot of important causes through Fareway,” she explains. “Then it really is a snowball effect. The more I become aware, the more and more I want to do to serve others.” MELDING GROCERY AND COMMUNITY Chase first became involved with the Iowa Grocery Industry Association (IGIA) as part of the 2016 Leadership Institute. She soon after joined the IGIA Women’s Network and was inspired by the layering of skill building, insights, networking and community service the program offered. During each of the group’s events, there is an opportunity to participate in a service activity, such as delivering meals with the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry or assembling period packs to benefit Give Grace, Give Hope. “To stand side-by-side with other women in the industry, joining together to give back is just an incredible experience,” Chase explains. “I always hear feedback from members that the service component is such a powerful part of the program.” Chase continued to grow her involvement in the association over the next few years, being elected to the board of directors in 2019 and serving as chair of the IGIA Women’s Network in 2021 and 2022. By volunteering in these leadership roles, she gives fully – always opening her calendar, sharing ideas and enthusiasm to advance the association and entire grocery industry. “IGIA has broadened my perspective on the entire industry,” she says. “Our supply chain and businesses are so intertwined; I believe there are endless ways we can work together to lift one another up.” BRINGING DIVERSE GROCERY PERSPECTIVE Chase began her grocery career journey as a part-time cashier at SuperValu in West Des Moines during high school. She made her way to Northwest Missouri State University to study marketing and her first job upon graduation in 1995 was a temporary position at Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) in Kansas City. For the next 20 years, Chase called AWG home – navigating a variety of positions in procurement, shelf management and category management in grocery, dairy and frozen as well as bakery/ deli and processed/frozen meat. In 2015, she took an opportunity as a buyer at Fareway, later advancing through a variety of other positions including director of category management and assistant vice president of category management. In 2018, she accepted her current role of vice president of category management. “My career path has allowed me to continue to grow as an individual and challenge myself in what I can contribute to the company,” she says. PRIORITIZING FAMILY AND CAUSES THAT INSPIRE While Chase casts a wide net for giving back, she is especially pulled to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa, where she currently serves as a committee chair. She also feels deeply connected to the work of the Food Bank of Iowa. “Maybe it’s being in the grocery industry, but the food bank’s work in feeding people and nourishing families is really important to me,” she explains. Family has been instrumental in shaping her career and time outside of the office. The decision to move back to Iowa in 2015 was spurred by a desire to be closer to her in-laws in the Minneapolis area and her parents in the Des Moines area. Chase enjoys spending time with her husband Bryan, who works as an engineer at Casey’s, and two daughters, Madison and Isabelle. Madison is a senior at Iowa State University and Isabelle is a junior at Waukee Northwest High School. HALL OF FAME ISSUE 2022 31
