Politicking claim as
mayoral battle heats up

expedition to an isolated flood and
mudslide-ravaged community on
Banks Peninsula has been described
as politicking by his potential rival
for the city’s mayoralty.
The first election battleground
of the campaign to replace Lianne
Dalziel in October likely unfolded
in the farming enclave of Goughs
Bay, which has been virtually cut
off since torrential rain and slips
wreaked havoc on December 15.
Mauger, who declared his mayoral
aspirations last August, made the
first inroads last Wednesday hours
after being contacted by one of
three families who rely on Goughs
Bay Rd as a link to the outside
world.
The road has been impassable
since the deluge with one 1.3km
stretch damaged by 34 slips.
The Burwood Ward councillor
visited John and Carol Masefield’s
property while incumbent Deputy
Mayor Andrew Turner, the
councillor representing Banks
Peninsula, spent Monday in the
area.
Although touted as a candidate
for the top job Turner, the leader
of the left leaning People’s Choice
caucus, is yet to reveal his plans.
Turner was not surprised Mauger
had ventured into his jurisdiction.
“Is it politics? Yes, it is. We are
in an election year. It’s exactly the
behaviour we would expect to see
from someone who has declared his
intention to run for the mayoralty,”
he said.

Book dedicated to history icon

SHIRLEY MCEWAN found she
was having conversations with
young Lyttelton residents who
knew little about life at the port
prior to the road tunnel.
So she wrote a book – Rail
before Road – to inform people
what Lyttelton was like as she
knew it.
McEwan, who writes under
her maiden name Buchanan,
refers to a time before the
construction of the road tunnel,
which opened in 1964. Back then
the only means of travel to the
city had been by train through
the railway tunnel.
“I found talking to people who
now live in Lyttelton that is since
the road tunnel went through,
they have no idea that we only
ever had trains,” said McEwan.
The book tells stories of a
generation that lived vastly
different to how Lyttelton
residents do now.
“It’s about the freedom that we
had as children, the lifestyle that
we lived and our dependence on
rail travel.
“Life has changed completely,
but I still think that young
people need to know how it used
to be,” said McEwan.
The book was inspired by
and dedicated to the late Baden
Norris.
Norris was the curator of
Lyttelton Museum, a local
historian, polar adventurer and
recipient of the Antarctic Medal
“Over the years he was so,
so helpful. I always knew if I
needed anything historical I
could go and ask Baden.
“Lyttelton wouldn’t have had a
museum of any sort if it hadn’t of
been for his driving force.”
All proceeds from the sales
of the book will go towards the
rebuild for Lyttelton Museum.
“It just seemed to be a good
way to help them to raise funds,”
said McEwan.
McEwan now resides at the
Rhodes on Cashmere retirement
village.
Said the 82-year-old: “You can
take the girl out of Lyttelton but
you can’t take Lyttelton out of
the girl.”
“Anybody who has ever lived
in Lyttelton knows that Lyttelton
remains part of your heart. It
was always a place with soul
where everybody looked after
everybody else, it was just a big
family.”

damaged in the 2011 earthquake,
photographs were rescued by the
fire brigade but the captions were
not.
“They attempted to put on
captions but they really need
people my age to know what
most of those photographs were
about,” said McEwan.
She asks anyone prepared to

IT WAS FAR too much for
Harvey the jack russell and his
mate Sam, the labrador cross, to
resist – the sound of something
rattling in a bush.
So they did what jack russells
and labradors do – pursue it.
But the problem was the rattling
sound – a possum – was down a
cliff.
But for Harvey it nearly all
turned to custard when he
charged down the cliff which
was covered in thick, wild berry
bushes.
He had been out walking with
his owner Catherine Venrooy
who was with her friend and
Sam on the Māori Gardens track
at Governors Bay after work on
January 25, when the drama
unfolded.
Venrooy managed to get a
hold of Sam by the tail as the
dogs charged for their quarry
but little Harvey was too quick.
It was too steep and the bush
too dense for Venrooy to get to
Harvey.
“We couldn’t get down, we
couldn’t see him but we could
hear him and the possum,” she
said.
“We tried calling him for ages
but it was no use, we didn’t know

“Thank God for farmers,
Mike, he’s a farmer, the first
thing he caught was the possum
and threw it back up. I think
most of us city dwellers would
crap ourselves to be quite honest
and wouldn’t go near it,” said
Norris.
With Harvey in hand, Smith
was lifted back up by the team.
Harvey was very thirsty but
uninjured and keen to continue
his possum hunt.
“We got Harvey’s lead onto
him but then he was real keen
to get back in there so we had to
hold him back pretty hard,” said
Venrooy.
After a shower and a big feed of
biscuits Harvey collapsed on his
bed for the night.
Venrooy was very thankful for
the team at the Governors Bay
brigade.
“Everyone was so helpful, it
was good teamwork, my friends
were great too.”
Governors Bay is the only
brigade in the Lyttelton Harbour
basin that is trained for lines
rescue and Norris said it went
very well.

Successful rocket
launch but data lost
THE ROCKET launch that had
some Birdlings Flat residents
concerned went ahead last Friday
with no issues.
Some residents were unaware
that the rocket was launched
at 11.45am from Kaitorete Spit
beach.
Safety measures were put
in place by the UC Aerospace
team and the rocket launched
safely but due to missing data,
the team cannot confirm whether
they hit their record setting
target.
The aim was to exceed the
current altitude record for a student-led
rocket programme held
by the University of Southern
California, which reached an
altitude of 104km.
“It launched perfectly, out
in the direction that it was
meant to go, unfortunately we
just lost that data so we can’t
prove it,” said project leader Jack
Davies.
Davies said the launch looked
good from the ground but they
lost the telemetry link that was
sending all the information from
the rocket back to them.
“We lost that link just after the
first stage burn so we weren’t able
to get all of the data we needed to

Lack of council
communication with
residents a concern

“We were planning that
well before Phil went out
there. I had a long and
detailed meeting with staff
(on January 24). We started
planning on the day.’’
Asked if he was thought
Turner had followed his
lead Mauger said: “It does
seem a bit coincidental”
before denying he was
politicking.
“I didn’t go out of my
way to dig holes in his vote
but I thought: ‘This is what
excites me about doing
council work. You can go
out and meet people and
see how you can make
them happy or fix things.
“I’ve been told a number
of times to get my head out
of operational and start
doing governance but I
just love the operational
bits because I can see how
things can maybe be done
better.”
Mauger updated city
council staff on his return
and acknowledged the city
council’s lack of communication
with residents was a
concern.
“They haven’t been told
any plans of what’s going
on. If they were kept in
the loop a bit more . . .

storm) and that was good
but they haven’t heard a
thing since.”

“half an inch away from
taking a digger over there
and doing it myself but I
know I’d get in deep s**t.”
In July 2020 he dug a
70m ditch on red zone
land to resolve long-term
flooding on Pages Rd in
the city’s eastern suburbs;
the council then spent
about $30,000 to fill in the
unauthorised trench.
Mauger cited that
exercise when dismissing
suggestions he indulged in
a points-scoring exercise
ahead of the October 8
polls.
“Roadworks, earthworks
… all that sort of thing
interests me. I’ve also got
a place over in Akaroa, a
little crib/bach. It’s always
interested me over there,”
he said, adding he will
reschedule an informal
gathering in Akaroa
cancelled due to Covid-19
restrictions.

Funding for
estuary
pest control
THE AVON-Heathcote Estuary
Ihutai Trust has received
$345,000 in funding to help with
predator control.
The trust applied for the
Jobs for Nature funding made
available by the Department of
Conservation early last year and
were successful.
The $345,000 will be spread
out over three years for the
Trust’s pest eradication project.
A contract has been made with
EXCELL company who have
conducted predator control for
25 years for the council, Environment
Canterbury and DoC.
With the funding, two new
jobs have been created and under
supervision from the council,
the Trust and EXCELL they
commenced with trapping in
December.
Part of the agreement was that
no poison is to be used and traps
have been especially designed
and built to ensure that cats and
dogs can not enter the traps.
South Shore Spit Reserve

traps have now been placed as
well as in South New Brighton
Park, Bexley, Lower Avon
River, Charlesworth Reserve,
McCormacks Bay reserve and
Linwood paddocks.
Eliminating predators a family affair

his daughter Lucy are doing
their part to help make Banks
Peninsula predator free.
The pair have been volunteering
for Pohatu Penguins and
Predator Free Banks Peninsula
in Akaroa, helping with an
ongoing survey and setting and
checking predator traps.
Pohatu Penguins led a peninsula-wide
penguin survey last
summer, on that survey they
found signs of predation in and
around some areas of penguin
nesting sites.
“After the survey, we knew we
had the ability to help and we’re
doing it,” said Butterfield.
“Lucy is the driving force behind
it. It’s her gig, I just provide
the boat and the labour.”
Twelve-year-old Lucy’s passion
for helping New Zealand’s native
biodiversity stemmed from
reading about the kākāpō on
Stewart Island. While she has
been able to sponsor a couple
of kākāpō, Lucy went in search
of something local her and her
family could help out with.
The Butterfields have a holiday
home in Akaroa and have been
going there for eight years.
“Birdlife is one of the amazing
things over there,” said Butterfield.
“We just feel that if we don’t
do something then there won’t

“They’re the real heroes,” said
Butterfield.
In October 2020, a group of
community leaders and over
60 volunteers surveyed Banks
Peninsula to identify penguin
numbers, 20 years after the first
significant peninsula-wide survey
was performed.
The Horomaka Kororā Survey
was started in 2020 with the
purpose being to estimate the
current population size of little
penguins on Banks Peninsula.
Butterfield and Lucy helped
out when the survey resumed at
the end of last year.

Harbour that were just getting
decimated by stoats,” said Butterfield.
Since then, he and Lucy have
set about 16 traps in the two big
nesting spots.
“Matt was installing BT200
traps in and around the sea coves
within the Akaroa Harbour. The
BT200 trap is a humane kill-trap
designed for stoats,” said PFBP
operations manager Tim Sjoberg.
With his teenage sons Tom
and Charlie helping out, Butterfield
uses his boat to get to the
more difficult-to-reach sea coves
then he and Lucy swim in.
“We’ve got a spare fishing float,
we hang on the back of that and
kick ourselves in, one of my sons
will sit on the boat while we
swim 20m to the shore,” Butterfield
said.
An estimated 68,000 native
birds are killed in New Zealand
by introduced pests every night,
and 25 million killed every year,
PFBP website states.
“It is the collective mahi, like
Matt’s [and Lucy’s], that will
really make a difference for our
taonga species,” PFBP communications
manager Vanessa
Mander said.
“We are buoyed by the effort,
passion and commitment shown
by our community,” she said.

volunteering with local trapping
group or starting a trap line.

The King’s Scouts
MAJOR DAVID Cossgrove of
Kaiapoi bravely volunteered for
the Second Boer War and served
His Majesty with distinction in
the 6th and 10th Contingents
of the New Zealand Mounted
Rifles from 1900-1902.
Under the British command
of the First Baron Baden-
Powell, Major General Robert
Stephenson Smyth Baden-
Powell, Major Cossgrove was
influenced by his commander’s
ideas regarding the training of
good, healthy British boys in the
discipline of scouting and other
skills that may be of service to
King and Empire.
THus it was on Cossgrove’s
return that the first Dominion
Boy Scouts Troop was
established at Kaiapoi in April,
1908.
The Dominion Boy Scouts
movement spread quickly across
the country with troops forming
in many towns including Lyttelton.
By 1913 the now Lieutenant-Colonel
Cossgrove’s Dominion
Scouts were affiliated with
Baden-Powell’s international
Boy Scouts Association of the
United Kingdom.
It is at this juncture that
you’ll find erstwhile Lyttelton
Boy Scouts Troop assembled at
the old Drill Hall in 1913 and
proudly displaying their accomplishments.
Centre stage is what appears
to be the Sargood-Otter Shield
awarded, fittingly for a port
town, to the Troop with the
highest number of boys taught
to swim.
Also, at their stage left, they
hold aloft the highly prestigious
King’s Standard. Awarded that
year by George V, King of the
United Kingdom and the British
Dominions, and Emperor of
India, the standard was given
to the troop with the highest
percentage of King’s Scouts,
those Boy Scouts judged most
proficient in scouting skills.
Skills that would no doubt
serve the older boys well in the
war against Imperial Germany
that would break out the
following fateful year. About 75 young scouts assembled at the old drill hall in 1913.

Hickory clubs set to test the best golfers

THE CHANCE discovery of a
warped wooden-shafted club
at an Akaroa antique fair more
than a decade ago has driven
an authentic golfing experience
that goes even further back in
time.
Stu Upton paid $25 for the
manky old putter in 2010, and
then did research which culminated
in the Christchurch Golf
Club planning the inaugural
New Zealand Hickory Open for
March 13.
“It’s been a goal of mine since I
got the putter,” said Upton, who
has assembled the largest private
collection of playable hickory
clubs in the country, 461 at last
count.
“I thought to myself: ‘How the
hell did they play golf with these
in those days?
Upton, who started golfing
at age 12, subsequently learned
hickory golf was popular in other
golfing countries, though not
New Zealand.
“I decided I was going to
change that and it’s taken me
this long to get enough (playable)
clubs where you can actually run
something,” he said.
Upton will provide a driver,
mid-iron, mashie (short iron),
mashie niblick (pitching wedge)
and putter unless golfers in the
field of 72 are already equipped

“Some clever buggers put a
modern (say 1970s) head on
a hickory shaft. That’s called
cheating,” he said.
Upton has eight left-handed
sets, with the legendary Sir
Bob Charles, who will host the
tournament on his beloved links
course in Shirley, requisitioning
a putter and a niblick.
“This is taking me back
to my earliest playing
days. These 100-year-old
hickories are the original
clubs and they have a
special feel that provides a
great challenge, enabling
us to experience golf as it
was meant to be played”

world-wide revival of hickory
golf, hopefully it will become an

The tournament concept gathered
momentum when Glenn
Bongartz, a former men’s club
captain at Christchurch, bought
a club from Upton.
“We got talking about our love
for the game and I said ‘Bob’s got
a love for this as well” and after
two years of talking we’ve finally
made it happen.”
Charles, 85, is also part of
the core planning group for a
one-day event featuring foursomes
and individual stroke
play.
Golfers can take on a
2700-yard nine-hole challenge
designed by Charles, who
has shortened some holes to
accommodate the old-style
clubs.

1930s – means you sacrifice the
benefits of new technology.
“A good drive, if you’re really
lucky, might be 200m (compared
to 250-285m with state
of the art equipment) and you
don’t have the volume of clubs,
you’ve only got five (or six) in
your bag,” Upton said.
“You have to be a little bit
inventive. That skill or art of
the game has gone, with modern
golf it’s all about drivers
and wedges.”
Charles and Upton will also
look the part after a selection
of plus fours, and tweed vests
arrived from the United Kingdom
last week.
Upton is also producing
hickory tee markers and period
piece flags for the greens. Clubs
will be carried in canvas and
leather bags reminiscent of the
sport’s formative years.
“We’re going the whole nine
yards,” said Upton, aware there
is considerable ground to make
up on a golfing world where
Scotland has hosted the World
Hickory Open since 2005.
Upton built his catalogue
from purchases throughout
the country, and noticed there
was no shortage of clubs based
resistant wood originally imported
from the United States.
“There’s loads out there. They
mass produced them in the
millions. It was like: ‘Where
can we get rid of these? We’ll
dump them in New Zealand’,”
he said.
The 59-year-old has spent
more than 2000 hours restoring
clubs often found languishing,
unloved, in garages or
sheds.
He separates the shaft from
the head, sands the hickory
and then soaks it in water for
several days to reverse any
bend in the club.
“I let it dry for four to five
days and nine times out of 10
the bend comes out to a point
where it’s acceptable.”
While proud of his collection
– Upton urges golfers not to
snap one over a thigh if they
land in the stream dissecting
the 9th – it is not exactly
priceless.
“About one in 25 has some
sort of significant value, the
rest are just common muck,”
he said.
Upton has a putter which
might be valuable – apparently
it was used by John Henry
Taylor to win the Open Championship
at Royal St George’s
in 1894.
“I have no proof, all it has got
is a plaque on it,” said Upton,

“I’ve seen a couple of drawings
of him and his caddie on
the green. You can see him
holding on to a putter but
there’s no way you can say it’s
that putter.”
Upton has no doubt about
the recent history of the putter
he’ll rely on next month, his
original purchase in Akaroa.
“It had a hellishly bent shaft,
now it almost looks brand
new.”

Radical styling cues for Tucson
I’VE HAD THE good fortune to
view the Grand Canyon, it certainly
is one of the most spectacular
environments on the planet.
As part of the journey to get
there, my wife and I passed
through Tucson, Arizona, a city
nestled below mountains and
on a desert edge. It was hot, dry
and some of the scenery almost
desolate through that area. So it’s
some surprise then Hyundai chose
that city as a name for one its midsize
sport utility vehicles.
However, it must be working for
Hyundai, the Tucson as a name has
been around since 2004, finding
its way to New Zealand then with
the choice of V6 or four-cylinder
engines.
Today, the Tucson has entered
into its fourth generation, and
not a lot has changed in terms
of concept. It is still the mid-size
family wagon that is quality built
and almost borders on the luxury
car class given its level of fitment
and specification, especially the
N-Line model as evaluated.
Long gone is the old V6,
technology has dictated that fuel
efficiency and low emissions are
the catalyst for modern drivelines.
Today, the Tucson arrives with
three engine options, there
are two petrol units – 1.6-litre
turbocharged and a 2-litre naturally
aspirated – and a 1.6-litre turbo
diesel. There are a total of 11
Tucson variants with front and
four-wheel-drive options thrown
into the mix. The range starts at
$46,990 and ends at $72,990.
The evaluation car was a highspec
N-Line variant. It is a fourwheel-drive
model powered by the
1.6-litre turbo petrol engine and
lists at $68,990. I applaud Hyundai
for the vast choice, it’s something
that any prospective buyer will
need to do a lot of homework on,
but with such a wide variety of
options there is a Tucson to suit
every demand and the choice
you make will be one that doesn’t
present you with kit you don’t
really need or want.
In N-Line specification, the
Tucson carries sporty cosmetic
adornments that make it stand
out from the rest of the group. The
interior has a smattering of red
stitched leather, and red accents
and highlights that complement
well the bold design of the new
Tucson.
Its shape is highlighted by
widespread use of geometric
angles and edges. According to
Hyundai, the Tucson has crisp
parametric shapes, creases that
provide a contrast to its wedge-type
lines. The result is a bold, striking
exterior design that flows through
to the interior.
In terms of specification the
N-Line model has everything
you could wish for. Satellite
navigation, leather seat material,
heated and cooling seats with
electric movement, heated
steering wheel, Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto plus a host of other
minor functions too numerous

to mention, many that are
manipulated through a large centre
console touch screen.
The 2022 Tucson has also been
crash tested, returning a five-star
Australasian New Car Assessment
Program safety rating.
Given its design purpose, there
are no surprises with the Tucson’s
occupant and load carrying
potential. The rear passenger space
is spacious, and under the tailgate
there is a cavernous cargo area that
is certainly up to par.
At the other end sits the delightful
1591cc engine. It’s a unit that is used
widely through Hyundai’s line-up
and that of its Korean partner Kia.
I’ve driven with this engine up front
many times before and I’ve always
delighted in its honesty and lively
nature.
It’s easily a match for the Tucson’s
1538kg kerb weight, with 132kW at
the top end and a healthy 265Nm
of torque available all of the way
from 1500rpm to 4500rpm. The
latter figures promote that feisty
nature, it is a true dynamo from
standstill, ushering in acceleration
with a free and easy manner.
A Tucson buyer with this engine
can expect a standstill to 100kmn/h
acceleration process of 8.8sec,
and for that highway overtake it
will accelerate from 120kmh from
80km/h in 6.6sec.
These are peace of mind figures
that give some indication as to the
ability of this engine and it works
away without showing signs of
fatigue or sounding angry. Drive is

dual clutch automatic transmission,
shifts are noticeable but very
quick in their action. Of course, in
N-Line form the driver has access
to changes through steering wheelmounted
paddle shifters should he/
she so desire.
Like most modern vehicles
there are normal, sport and eco
drive modes through a consolemounted
flick switch, however, I
used normal mode for most of my
driving time.
As mentioned, I’ve experienced
this engine many times before and
have always been intrigued by its
fuel use, or rather its lack of. In the
Tucson Hyundai claim a 6.9-litre
per 100km combined cycle average,
at times I’ve come close to meeting
that figure. During my evaluation
time the Tucson was constantly
listing around 8l/100km with
4l/100km showing instantaneously
at 100km/h (engine speed
1800rpm). They are similar figures
to those I achieved in Hyundai’s
sports car, the turbocharged
Veloster, when I evaluated it last
year, which just serves to prove you
can have fun with this engine but
at the same time knowing that it is
not scoffing fuel unnecessarily.
The day I took the Tucson on
my inland highway loop a fierce
nor’wester was blowing across the
Canterbury Plains. That makes
those fuel usage stats even more
remarkable, a head wind going
west was making the engine work
harder than it should have been,
also bearing in mind that heading
in that direction from the city is a
long uphill climb.
In terms of handling, the Tucson
has traditional SUV qualities. Being
four-wheel-drive it has the benefit
of a fully independent suspension
system which provides not just
comfort but good compliance,
movement and subsequent stability
in a corner. N-Line models also
have the benefit of high quality
Michelin tyres (235/50 x 19in),
resulting in direct steering and
accuracy in and out of a corner.
First and foremost, though,
the Tucson in all forms is the
quintessential sport utility vehicle.
It is family-friendly, yet it is also
an invigorating drive. It’s also a car
that’s stood the test of time, only
good vehicles have longevity and
that’s something Hyundai can take
a lot of credit for and I guess with
so many variants on offer they are
confident of satisfying the market
for many more years to come.
