THE MUSTER IS BACK, BETTER THAN EVER
GIRGARRE COMMUNITY NEWS
The community spirit that drives Girgarre came well and truly to the fore again in January. After a year long recess,
the Moosic Muster bounced back, albeit in a radically changed format but still with the friendly, inclusive spirit the
community is known for. “We were determined, pandemic or no pandemic, that we would bring back our festival
in 2022,” Festival Director, Jan Smith said. “We knew there would be many curved balls thrown our way and that
our master plan would have to be flexible. It was good thinking on our part because we were easily able to tweak
the plan with each toss of the ball. As part of our initial planning we decided to hold as much of the festival outdoors
as possible for safety reasons. The reduced number of formal workshops in the program allowed for more
casual jams and pop up workshops outside. All contingencies were covered, even the variable weather - and it
paid off big-time – the muster was a rip-roaring success. I am absolutely thrilled at the outcome. The plan we
have now will see us through many more years to come.”
Campers began to stake their claim on a spot in the reserve early in
the week. Shady spots were at a premium and the reserve soon resounded
to the sound of music as friends found each other. Everyone,
whether a paid up member of the muster or a visitor coming to the
many free concerts, responded obligingly to the marshalls checking
them in.
The Girgarre Moosic Muster was one of the first music festivals
on the eastern seaboard to re-commence following the easing of the
lock-downs. A visit from the Victorian Department of Health prior to the
start of the festivities reassured Jan and co-organiser Di Burgmann that
all was well. “They were impressed and very supportive of our master
plan,” Di said. “We had all bases covered. It was a terrific boost to our
spirits and a huge relief to know our festival was on the right track. We
wanted everyone to have a safe and happy festival, and it was. It all
went very smoothly.”
Co-ordinator’s Catch-up
Hello everyone and Happy New Year!
February already and my word haven’t we hit the
ground running. So much is going on in the
community and at The Cottage. If three computers
on the go all at once does not give you an indication of how busy we
are, then nothing will. Covid 19 has impacted volunteering around
the globe and we are also feeling the effects. With many different
volunteering roles available, we would love to hear from you as we
have learned so much about the importance of social connection
and the significant role volunteering can play in supporting
well-being and reducing loneliness in the both the volunteer and the
recipient. If you can spare any time, even as little as an hour, please pop in or ring me for a chat.
Happy birthday to Hetty Hall, 95 and still going strong. Hetty had a
lovely day with her family and enjoyed being spoilt at Seniors the
following Tuesday with her favourite dessert, a pavlova.
Well done Girgarre! Dale had the pleasure of picking up the new
community car, a 2022 Kia Sportage. The community transport
program is back up and running at 100%. If you require transport
for medical appointments, please phone us to organise a booking.
Once again, we need more volunteer drivers. If you are able to
assist, please contact us to discuss driving options.
The Butterfly Patch is booming! The produce is incredible and we have just begun our second round of
planting. We have the “Gardens Gurus” in every Wednesday-these gardeners are a mix of new and experienced
gardeners who are a lovely welcoming bunch. We are using Wednesday’s as an opportunity to
meet new people and learn or teach new skills. So if you love to garden or would like to learn, please pop
in to the Cottage on a Wednesday at
10am. You will be rewarded with a
lovely lunch cooked with produce from
our very own garden.
Take care, Bye for now, Kezia

GIRGARRE COMMUNITY NEWS
HATS OFF TO THE VOLUNTEERS - It’s hands on - five
days of solid work.
What would Girgarre do without its volunteers? Master plan or no
master plan, the Girgarre Moosic Muster would not run without
them. Who are they? It’s not just the regular executive who, over
many Zoom meetings, drew up a Master plan, organised flyers and
developed the ticketing system, but publicist, Gwen Potter, a retired
journalist with contacts all over the media world, it’s also Lyn Cosham
and Maureen Shepherd, (picture right) looking after the merchandising
and rosters for the information van. It’s Ken Stewart, who sets up
and tweaks the sound system that makes everyone sound so good
and the sandwich makers and other food providers including the CFA
and RSL. Let’s not forget the team responsible for setting up and shifting
around chairs and marquees, the ‘Toilet Fairy, Robyn Northey,
who made sure the portable toilets were decent and stocked with the
Lyn Cosham, black T & Maureen Shepherd,
white T, with a couple of festival
necessary, and those who set up rubbish bins and did a myriad other jobs such as the courtesy bus driver, David
Fulton, and the good folk of the Recreation Reserve. Finally, it’s the
volunteers who acted as gate and venue marshalls, so necessary
this muster. And many more – all appreciated.
Gate Marshalls. Judy, Bernadette & Fiona
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. All the workshop leaders and concert
bands are volunteers too. ‘Dancin’ with Angels’ (pictured below)
lead the popular gospel concert each year. They’ve been regular
supporters
from the first
muster 15
years ago.
The publiciity surrounding the popular Girgarre episode of the *ABC series Back Roads did no harm. Random surveys
of the crowd found many newcomers to the festival who had come to “see if Back Roads was real”. The
feedback? Well, it was even better and they’ll be back next year bringing their friends. *(Back Roads Girgarre,
Latest Contribution
by Ruth Kirkham
Ricky and the Roller
Ricky stepped up from the beach and entered the gravelled carpark, empty except for one vehicle. He glanced
over at it, stopped, and looked again. It shone like a beacon in the forecourt of the hotel, just out of sight from
the beach. He walked over. It was a two-door convertible – top down, beautifully polished bright jonquilyellow
duco, brassware gleaming.
“Wow!” He gave a low whistle, his heart racing. “Look at that – what a beauty! A Rolls-Royce Twenty
Drophead Coupé!” He flicked the dust off the famous triangular-top radiator with his handkerchief.
“That red RR emblem makes it an early one,” he said to himself, giving it an extra rub for good measure.
“Hmmm … probably an in-line six cylinder … yes, crank-handle and magneto and coil … four-speed manual
… about 1927, I reckon.”
Resisting the urge to lift the bonnet, he ran his hands over the big brass headlights and down the sleekly
curved mudguard. What I wouldn’t give for a car like this! Ricky felt the envy wash over him. Tweed cap,
scarf and dust coat … boy, I’d look the part. Sunday drives in the country … picnic basket strapped on the
back, cold chicken and champers. If I had a car like that, I’d have no trouble finding a pretty young thing to
come driving with me.
Ricky leaned over the driver’s door, one foot on the running board, and looked at the old-style gear stick,
clutch and brake pedals. You could smell the old money in the leather seats. He stroked the wooden steering
wheel. It was beautiful – the mellow patina from years of other hands had polished it to perfection.
The key was in the ignition. He looked around – no one in sight, not a soul. I’ll just hear how she runs, he
thought, turning on the key. I bet it’s as sweet as a baby. He gave the crank a swing.
“Aaah, purring like a kitten – beautiful.”
Ricky opened the door and climbed in, leant back and let his hands slide around the steering wheel, taking
in the rosewood dash and the shiny round dials, breathing in the leathery smell – oblivious to anything but the
car.
He gave the accelerator a little rev. A manila folio on the passenger seat caught his eye. As he picked it up,
advertising pamphlets for the new Lovely Waters housing estate on the peninsular spilled out.
Lifestyle and Liberty: a brand-new concept for the younger upwardly mobile generation. Going
fast. Don’t miss out, it’s your call.
“Oh yeah, Santorini, the billionaire property developer.” Ricky gave a wry smile as he fumbled with the
leaflets. Who else could afford a car like this. I wonder where he is.
He shuffled through the papers and saw a reminder note with yesterday’s date:
Steve – will be leaving the car at the Florida forecourt tomorrow. Picking up a deep-sea fishing
charter at 10 am, planning on heading to the outer reef for a couple of days When you knock
off, take it back to the house for me would you?
Ricky glanced at the clock on the hotel façade – only 11.45am. He couldn’t help himself. He depressed
the clutch, engaged first gear, released the hand-brake – and slowly lifted his foot.
He’ll never know, he thought. Just a quick turn around the block.
News from Many Makers Gallery Stanhope
The gallery has been very quiet during January, however it was lovely to see a few visitors finding their way and
enjoying a visit to Stanhope & Many Makers Gallery.
Thank you to the people who supported the gallery shop during December, purchasing gifts for family & friends.
I’ve received feedback from many people that recipients were delighted with their gifts. Thanks for supporting local
small business and individual Aussie Makers!
I welcomed new makers & lines into the gallery during December and January; Peta Manning re-purposes items
such as silver teaspoons to create stunning earrings and Lisa Ould makes quirky and delightful knitted items including
toys & play/display food. Lise Darcy has added a new line of fragrant candles & soy wax melts; and Jeanette
Tenace has added her range of seeds.
Several Makers have restocked or brought in new work and so
the gallery is looking vibrant and is abundant with Aussie made
art and products.
I hope to see you soon at Many Makers Gallery, 27 Birdwood
Ave Stanhope! Open Thursday to Sunday. Please follow
@manymakersgallery on FBook or Instagram for regular updates
on makers and products; as well as creative things happening
in the area!
R.S.L. News
In 2020, Girgarre R.S.L. turned 100 years old. Our commemoration was put on hold
until 2021. But as we all know, 2021 was like no other due to the Covid-19 pandemic
affecting all aspects of our lives. We, the R.S.L. were no exception, but it left us asking,
“How do we ensure the appropriate commemoration of this significant milestone?”
The answer was very simple: we hold off until 2022. So on Saturday 5 th March 2022,
we will be opening the doors to our R.S.L. meeting room to the general public (subject
to Covid-19 regulations). Children will be most welcome.
We will put together a “free event”, “open to all”, a display of old photographs, posters, uniforms, books and other
items of interest. We will also have R.S.L. members present who may be able to assist you with information on Service
Records or roles R.S.L members have played in war and peace and their contribution to the community up to
present day.
Should you have any old photos, other items of interest that could enhance our day, we would be most grateful for
the loan of them.
Please contact Robert Axen on 03 5854 6429 or 0429 445 566, George Weeks on 03 5864 6414 or Gary Kitt on
Australia Day
What a fantastic Australia Day we had! 70 people
in attendance including Councillors Adrian Weston
and Leanne Pentreath with Cr John Zobec and Cr
Colleen Gates popping in for a visit towards the
Stefan Romaniw was a fabulous ambassador giving
a very engaging address. Brendan Nicholson once
again did a sterling job as MC and the very deserving
Laurie Young was the winner on the Girgarre
A huge thank you to all of the volunteers; setting
