INSIGHT 04We ignore themost vulnerableolder people
We spoke to many older people who are thriving.They have active and fulfilling lives, they are busywith activities, surrounded by family and they findenjoyment in later life. These are the people whoare highly connected and well supported. Buta significant minority are not thriving and theirvoices are rarely heard.It is far too easy to ignore thosewho live out of sight.Older people who do not have family support andlack financial security and housing stability aremore likely to be isolated. While New Zealand’ssuperannuation scheme currently provides auniversal basic income for over 65’s, inequalityleaves many older New Zealanders behind. Thisgap is only likely to widen as our population ages.There is a strong correlationbetween ethnicity andsocioeconomic inequalityamong older New Zealanders.Older people living in poverty are far more likelyto be of Māori and Pacific ethnicity, and olderPacific people have the highest rates of hardshipand the lowest economic living standards in NewZealand (Lotoala, Alpass, & Henricksen, 2014).Age Concern’s 2017 survey of older people inSouth Auckland revealed 33.5% of respondentsdid not feel that they are financially secure, andwhen controlled for ethnicity, 85.7% Māori feltfinancially insecure compared with 21.5% of NZEuropean/Pākehā (Counties Manukau PositiveAgeing Network, 2018).The number of older New Zealanders whodo not own their own home is rising. A recentinquiry into aged care in New Zealand foundthat renters are especially vulnerable as rentshave increased faster than the accommodationsupplement, particularly in Auckland. With thecurrent housing crisis, there are long waiting listsfor social housing. The quality of rental housingstock in New Zealand is also poor, with manyolder people living in damp and cold conditions inhouses that are poorly maintained (New ZealandLabour Party, Green Party of Aotearoa NewZealand, & Grey Power, 2017).“I’ve got nowhere to go now,I’ve got no family … I neverhear from anyone.”– Bruce,Participant17
