INSIGHT 06We underestimatethe importance ofspirituality
All of us have a spirituality, but not all of usunderstand, acknowledge or ‘feed’ our spirituality.Often as we age, we understand and explore ourspirituality more. Many of the older people wespoke to who are thriving, told us their faith orspiritual practice gives them strength, support andmeaning. For some people this means attendingchurch, temple or taking part in other religiousgroups. For others this means praying, meditatingor practising mindfulness.Many older people we met talked about theirappreciation and gratitude for life. They spokeof the pleasure of connecting with nature, andenjoying simple pleasures such as spending timein the garden. They told us about life slowed down- having, and taking, time to notice. All of this isspiritual practice and contributes to happiness,connection, satisfaction and thriving.We are much more than the body.We are also emotions of manycolours, intelligence, wisdom, richlife experience and voyaging souls.If we go into the ageing yearsthinking we are the body and nomore, then we could have a rockytime, for the body will diminishas we age.
