INSIGHT 05We strip olderpeople of theirindividuality
Older people are diverse and have diverse needs,but services and solutions for older people oftentake a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Whereas themilestones of reaching maturity as children andyoung adults are quite consistent, we experiencethe changes of later life quite differently. It isquite possible for some 80 year olds to retainthe physical and mental capacities of 20-yearolds, while some 60 or 70-year-olds may requireassistance with basic day-to-day activities(World Health Organization, 2015b).Many older people we spoke tofeared the loss of identity andindividuality that might come fromentering institutional residentialenvironments, where they wouldlose control over many aspects oftheir day-to-day lives.There is a lack of awareness of the cultural andethnic diversity of the rapidly growing ageingpopulation and the diversity of our ageingpeople means there’s increasing demand forculturally appropriate aged care. Late-lifeimmigrants can feel unwelcome and excluded.Community connections and participation inco-ethnic community groups provide pathwaysto participation in wider civic life in New Zealand(Wright-St Clair & Nayar, 2017), but it’s easy for theneeds of minority groups to be overlooked.Australia has recently launched an Aged CareDiversity Framework based on the World HealthOrganization principles of non-discrimination;availability; accessibility; acceptability; quality;accountability and universality that aims toensure all Australians have access to respectfuland inclusive aged care services (Aged CareSector Committee Diversity Sub-Group, 2017).What could we do in New Zealandto better meet the diverse needs ofour older people?“I am afraid of going into arest home.
