OPPORTUNITY ONEHow might we planfor ageing well?The physical, mental, emotional, spiritualparticipation and social changes of ageing aredifferent for everyone but can be surprising,overwhelming and traumatic. Often peoplereport being unprepared.We emphasise financial planning withoutconsideration for how we might live if a partnerdies or if health or ability declines significantly.The transition out of work is often celebrated asa great milestone, but for some feels more scarythan joyous. Some have major concerns aboutwhat they will do with their time; how they willbe of value; and how they will connect sociallywith others when work has often fulfilled manyof these purposes.Let’s consider:How might we mark major life transitionpoints in later life and plan for them?How might we create opportunities totalk - early and often - about planningfor ageing?How might we learn from those whoplan well for later life?How might we calculate our socialreadiness as we do our financialreadiness for retirement (measuringour social connectedness as wedo our savings)?Community nourishes and extends me. I feel safe but also challenged. Now, with theuse of social media, I am developing virtual communities and feel more in contactwith my readers than ever before. This sense of a rich network is vitalising.
