But the wheels of progress in terms of getting something on the vacant site have turned very slowly over the years. Hopefully things are about to speed up with the city council giving parties interested in developing the site until June 7 to lodge proposals. Building on the site won’t be cheap, but long term it will be a good investment. Diamond Harbour is still one of Canterbury’s bestkept secrets, but it needs more hospitality to draw news Page 10 people and make it a mustdo place to visit. In 2019, feedback to the city council from the local community was quite clear in what they wanted on the site: Somewhere to socialise. Wednesday March 16 2022 Bay Harbour News Former Godley House site open for tender until June • By Kristie Boland BRINGING together multiple parties to collectively develop a hospitality site for Godley House is what Scott Winter is hoping to achieve. Last week, the city council issued tender documents, giving interested business people until June 7 to lodge proposals for the site. Winter, a Banks Peninsula Community Board member, is meeting with several different parties this week Scott Winter on the historic site. “I asked for anyone that wishes to get behind a local proposal to get in touch and the response has been promising,” said Winter. He said there has been interest in the development both locally and from further afield. “[There has been] many offers for services from local professionals; however, there has not been one single entity that has communicated to me that they have the motivation, funding and resource to put together a tender,” Winter said. Feedback was diverse but an overarching theme was the desire to have somewhere to socialise, with 132 people specifically requesting a licenced hospitality venue. Recent posts on the Diamond Harbour community Facebook page show residents are clearly frustrated with how long the process is taking. Winter said he felt similar frustrations, but thought progress was now being made. Godley House was built as a home in the 1880s. In later years it was as used as a hotel, restaurant and conference centre. It is a landmark site in Diamond Harbour, and an area with considerable historical and cultural value in the development of Banks Peninsula. The building was damaged in the earthquakes and later demolished. “When Godley House was damaged in the earthquakes, it wasn’t just this community and local businesses that lost a special place but the whole of New Zealand. “Generations to come deserve to have a place to enjoy and Christchurch City deserves another unique destination,” Winter said. NEWS 3 In Brief FRIDAY’S FIRE CAUSED BY RUBBISH BURN A chopper was called in to help get a fire under control in Duvauchelle on Friday. The Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a fire just after 7pm near Pawsons Valley Rd. The fire was caused by ashes blown downhill from a rubbish burn. Akaroa chief fire officer Mark Thomsen said the direction of the wind was in their favour. The chopper dropped three monsoon buckets while firefighters worked on the ground. The fire was under control by dark. KERBSIDE SERVICES TO BE EXTENDED The city council is proposing to extend the kerbside collection service to some additional properties in the Wairewa area of Banks Peninsula that currently only receive a part service. There are plans to offer a full kerbside service to all properties accessible to collection vehicle, between Cooptown and Gebbies Valley. NEW MARKET STARTING A new market is starting up at the Mt Pleasant Centre on Sunday. The Mt Pleasant Food Truck Alley will pop up from 4-8pm. Located in the car park of the community centre, it is for all those returning from a day out and wanting to get tea on the way home.
