Sacrifices pay off for Amelia

PASSION, HOURS of training,

and good family support is the

recipe for success in becoming a

teen cycling national champion.

But the talented 17-year-old

Amelia Sykes of Sumner is

honest about the toll it takes

on other aspects of her life like

school and her social life, not to

mention the exhaustion.

Amelia recently competed

in the track national

championships in Cambridge

where she won four titles – the

500m time trial, the points race,

the individual pursuit and the

elimination race. She was

also second in another three

events.

• By Niva Chittock and Kristie

A WOMAN has been left reeling

after thieves broke into her

car then used ATMs to steal

thousands of dollars from her

savings.

And they did it without the

password for her online banking

account or her pin number.

Waveney Teale-Russ was on a

walk on Saturday afternoon, when

her car window was smashed in

Naval Point car park.

Teale-Russ’s car was one of six

vehicle break-ins at Naval Point

last week. Prompting Naval Point

Club manager Richard Matterson

to ask the Banks Peninsula

Community Board for funding to

install more security cameras in

the car park.

Matterson said he had been

made aware of “half a dozen or

so” break-ins since the beginning

of the year and six in the past

week alone.

“They clearly know what they’re

doing, fully hooded, masked and

with binoculars to check out for

cameras,” Matterson said.

Vandals throw benches, mats

from Sumner Lifeboat station

• By Kristie Boland

VOLUNTEER SEARCH and

rescue station Sumner Lifeboat

has been vandalised over the

weekend.

On Sunday night, a person

climbed up onto the station balcony

and threw the benches and

mats into the car park.

There is

video footage

of the culprit

but they have

been unable to

get an ID on

the vehicle used

said Sumner

Lifeboat board

member Howard

Nicholls.

Nicholls posted images to the

Sumner Facebook Community

Page asking people to keep an

eye out and phone the police if

they have any information on

who the vandal might be or if

they saw anything suspicious

around the lifeboat station.

“This sort of thing happens

occasionally. It’s frustrating for

us as a volunteer search and

rescue organisation to have

to waste our time sorting out

vandalism. But more positively,

we appreciate the great support

of locals,” Nicholls said.

Meanwhile, Nicholls said

they are asking for “patience not

abuse” from the public when the

search and rescue crew is launching

the boats used to save lives.

Parking near the lifeboat

station in Scarborough on

weekends can sometimes be

“chaotic,” with crew trying to

find space to leave their vehicles

and launch boats to attend an

incident, Nicholls said.

Often the crew needs to block

off access to the car park while

they launch.

“Most people are really helpful

but unfortunately not all. We ask

for patience not abuse,” he said.

Nicholls said the crew will

now be using traffic cones to

block the car park off for a short

time to create a safe space while

they move their boats from the

shed to launch them from the

ramp.

“We want to thank the locals

and surfers that aid us. People

are always helping out,” he said.

$400,000

grant will help

band get into

new building

• By Emily Moorhouse

AFTER YEARS of using an

earthquake-damaged band room

the Woolston Brass has been

given a grant to help with its

rebuild project.

Woolston Brass will receive

$400,000 over the next two

financial years, coming from the

city council’s Capital Endowment

Fund, $270,000 has been granted

for the 21/22 financial year, and

$130,000 for the 23/24 financial

year.

The existing band room

located at 37 Dampier St was

built in 1905 but suffered

significant earthquake damage.

While the band room continues

to be used by around 200 regular

members and nine external

organisations, the city council

has advised the rebuild will be

undertaken by 2025.

Woolston Brass members

believe they will have raised

sufficient funds by mid-2023 to

begin construction, finishing in

late 2024.

The proposed rebuild design

consists of two floors with a range

of performance areas, tuition

spaces and storage spaces and will

have accessible parking.

An average day for Amelia

means waking up early for her

favourite meal, porridge, then

heading off to Avonside Girls

High School.

She tries to eat as much as she

can throughout the day for the

much needed energy necessary

to train after school. Carbs are

a must.

“If you’re in sport like me, it

pays to really like eating food

and the right food,” Amelia

said.

After school, five days a week,

she trains for between one hour

to four hours, depending on

what race she has coming up.

She also trains on the

weekend, usually giving herself

one day of rest.

“I do find it really hard and

sometimes quite draining,

getting home from school and

training can be exhausting but

I think I manage it okay. I have

good support from family, my

coach and friends,” Amelia said.

She first got into cycling five

years ago when her father, Julian

Sykes, introduced the sport to

her.

“He took me down to the

track cycling one day and I just

fell in love with it from there,”

she said.

Amelia has always been into

more extreme sports. Before

cycling she was an ice speed

skater.

“She understands me as a

races before, she’s a very good

She has big plans for her

future in cycling. She hopes

to start with racing in the

junior track cycling world

championships in Israel this

year.

“I would like to go as far as

I can, whether that’s the world

champs, the Olympics or the

Commonwealth Games,” she

said.

Having big goals like this

means life as a 17-year-old looks

a little different for Amelia who

still tries to keep as much of a

social life as she can.

“I do miss out on parties but I

don’t find that a bad thing. I’m

not interested in partying and

drinking I would rather focus

on my sport and have my set

goals.

“I’m happy to just be in

everyone’s company and not

have to drink just to fit in with

everyone else like I’m pretty

happy to be who I am and doing

my thing but still be social with

everyone else,” she said.

While she has a strong focus

on her goals, Amelia also makes

sure to enjoy being young.

“There is a time to be serious

about it but there’s also a time

to just realise that you’re young

and to enjoy it for what it is,” she

said.

Teale-Russ’s phone and wallet

were hidden in the car boot and

were stolen along with many other

items.

Despair became worse an hour

later, when she rang the bank and

discovered the thieves had also

ransacked her account.

“I thought I would only have to

cancel my card and then my luck

would return but they informed

me that my internet banking

passcode had been changed 15

minutes prior to this call and

thousands of dollars from your

savings account have been transferred

into your main account,”

she explained.

“They then proceeded to tell me

that several thousands of dollars

had been withdrawn from ATM

machines.”

Teale-Russ said she is shocked

the thieves transferred large

amounts of money, changed her

online banking password and

the pin number of her debit card,

without raising alarm.

“There seemed to be no red flags

in the ANZ department. I didn’t

receive an email notification,

and if I received a call or text it

wouldn’t have mattered because

my phone was stolen.

“You’d think any sudden

withdrawal of $1000 cash from

an ATM would spark some kind

of concern from the bank,” Teale-

Russ said.

ANZ said it cannot discuss

security measures for privacy

reasons, but in a statement confirmed

it has a fraud monitoring

system in place.

If fraud is suspected, it will

make a call on whether or not the

account should be blocked, while

trying to reach the customer.

But Teale-Russ said it was her

call which alerted the bank to the

issue.

She said there has been no

sense of urgency from ANZ and

while she felt listened to, she no

longer feels safe banking with

them.

“They print your customer

number, which is a vital piece

of information to log into your

internet banking, on the back of

the debit card.”

When ordering a new card

Teale-Russ asked if it would be

possible to get a card without the

number on it.

“They said ‘no sorry, that’s just

the way it is’. Definitely ANZ

needs to think about introducing

something new.”

The thieves used this number

and information from her phone

to access Teale-Russ’s account.

However, ANZ said it encourages

customers to familiarise

themselves with the security and

message settings on devices to

add an extra layer of protection

when using text notification

services.

Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz

Banking ombudsman Nicola

Sladden said actions like those

detailed in Teale-Russ’s case,

should sound the alarm to most

banks.

“Banks’ fraud detection systems

should be robust and should

be focused on identifying and

preventing unauthorised transactions.”

“We would expect banks to

have pretty rigorous procedures

and if an unauthorised transaction

happens, we would expect

the bank to promptly put the

matter right for the customer.”

While banks have an obligation

to protect accounts, people

should look out for their security

too, Sladden said.

Teale-Russ has now been reimbursed

while the police continue

to investigate the theft.

Police said car thefts in the

city have increased in recent

weeks and they are monitoring

areas where break-ins have been

reported.

Prevention is key and people

should always lock their car, even

in their own driveway, Senior

Sergeant Roy Appley said.

“Avoid leaving valuables in

your car and if you have to leave

them there, make sure they are

out of sight,” Appley said.

Grand

Becoming my mother’s daughter

by noelle McCarthy

The astonishing debut memoir about mothers and daughters, drinking, birth and loss, running away

and homecoming from prize-winning writer and broadcaster Noelle McCarthy.

“I’ll be grand, girl, I’ve great faith.” – Mammy, just before she died

Funny, charismatic and generous; angry, vicious and hurt; in pub lounges all over Cork City, Noelle

McCarthy’s mother Carol rages against her life and everything she’s lost.As soon as she can, Noelle

runs away. All the way to New Zealand, to make a new, different kind of life. But then Mammy gets

sick, and it’s time to face everything that’s waiting back home.

From Catholic Ireland in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s to sparkling Auckland in the first years of the

new millennium, Grand is a story of the invisible ties that bind us, of bitter legacies handed down

through the generations, and of the leap of faith it takes to change them.

Toi Tu Toi Ora

Contemporary Maori art

by nigel Borell

The story of contemporary Maori art from the 1950s to the present day, with more than 200 artworks by

110 Maori artists, this is a powerful, dynamic new book. Maori art is unique among all art movements,

and to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Drawing on centuries of indigenous knowledge and skill, it reflects a Maori world view, life in this land

and the debates that continue to shape it.

Based on the ground-breaking 2020-21 exhibition staged by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, and

edited by the show’s curator Nigel Borell, Toi Tu Toi Ora tells the story of contemporary Maori art from the

1950s to the present day, with more than 200 works by 110 Maori artists.

From carving to painting, video art to jewellery, body adornment to weaving, this is a powerful expression

of the vast creativity and diversity within Maori art, linked across time and place through the Maori

creation story and revealing profound connections to whakapapa, to whenua and to the spiritual world.

Every work is illustrated in full colour and described in illuminating captions that are bilingual in English

and te reo Maori.

deadly experiments on them. Only a few dozen children survived, Tati and Andra among them.Tati,

Andra, and Sergio were separated from their mothers upon arrival. But Mira was determined to keep track

of her girls. After being tattooed with their inmate numbers, she made them memorize her number and

told them to “always remember your name.” In keeping this promise to their mother, the sisters were able

to be reunited with their parents when WWII ended.

An unforgettable narrative of the power of sisterhood in the most extreme circumstances, and of how a

mother’s love can overcome the most impossible odds, the Bucci sisters’ memoir is a timely reminder

that separating families is an inexcusable evil.

A Walk A Day

365 short Walks in new Zealand

by Peter Janssen

“Completely revised and updated. Over 10,000 copies sold of the previous editions. Walking is one

of the most popular recreational activities in New Zealand. The 365 revised and updated short walks

presented here mean both locals and overseas visitors will never be at a loss to find a short walk

anywhere in the country. All of the walks are three hours or less and will suit those who enjoy walking

but do not want a long tramp with heavy boots and a pack, or travellers who are short on time and those

with young families.

MAKE EASTER SPECIAL

FOR YOUR CHILDREN

Arranged according to region, and prefaced with a handy map overview, it’s easy to see at a glance

where the walks can be found in each region. Every walk entry has a brief summary, with notes on track

gradient, access, and walking times. A special feature of the book is the engaging writing style of the

author, describing history, anecdote, and points of interest along the walk. Two inserts of attractive colour

photographs highlight particular places of scenic interest in the three main islands of the country. “

Esplanade needs re-grassing after

botched repair job, residents say

• By Kristie Boland

RESIDENTS ARE “fed up”

with the state of the grass on

Beachville Esplanade.

The Redcliffs Residents Association

claims the area is looking

“worse than ever” after a failed

effort from the city council to

restore the grassed area last year.

“The attempt

at light

scarification

and reseeding

has failed

dismally, as

was rather

expected . .

tables, it is embarrassing,” said

RRA secretary Pat McIntosh.

The RRA is asking the city

council to proceed to full reinstatement

of the grass, along

with a review of the planting and

landscaping.

“They have got to completely

re-grass it, nothing else is going

to work,” said McIntosh.

“We felt at the time the

contractors weren’t doing a good

job, the grass was compacted,

it hadn’t been properly mowed,

when they sowed it they didn’t

water it properly and they let the

weeds grow rampant before they

actually got around to the first

mowing,” she said.

McIntosh

said the city

council did

acknowledge

it hadn’t been

done properly.

Stephen

Wright said

city council

staff intend to visit the site this

week to evaluate it.

“Without irrigation and in dry

conditions it has been difficult

to establish good grass coverage.

We will keep trying,” Wright

said.

McIntosh said the RRA want

to know how the city council

can promptly spend $60,000

on full replacement of the grass

in Cranmer Square after the

anti-mandate occupation, a

considerably bigger area, and

still not have the Beachville

Esplanade area restored.

“We used to be able to have

picnics and play games on

the grassed area. We will be

complaining again to council

as it was their fault that this

turned out so badly after

the sea wall repairs,” said

McIntosh.

Linwood-Central-Heathcote

Community Board member

Darrell Latham said he is

working with the RRA on this

matter and will be bringing

its concerns to the next board

meeting on May 13.

“It’s now time for the council

to look at full replacement of

the affected turf areas along

Beachville Esplanade. Earlier

attempts at reseeding have failed

miserably. The job now needs to

be done properly. Half measures

don’t work and the council is

only throwing good money

after bad if they don’t do the job

properly,” Latham said.

Black Ferns inspire players of the future

DIAMOND Harbour School

pupils went home from school

dreaming of becoming future

professional rugby players after

a visit from two Black Ferns last

week.

Black Fern Grace Brooker and

former Black Fern Stacey Lene

spent the day with the pupils,

teaching them valuable skills

both on and off the field.

“They made a real effort to

make it personal. Their stories

were really inspirational,” said

Diamond Harbour Rugby Club

junior club captain Hannah

Riden.

Brooker and Lene spent time

talking about their training and

eating habits as professional

athletes. They also shared clips

from their games and answered

the many questions thrown their

way.

Then they took the kids out

to the field to practise what they

had learned.

Riden said it was as enjoyable

for the teachers as it was for the

students.

“We all needed the inspiration

after so many cancelled events

with Covid, it was uplifting for

everyone.”

“I would say there will be a

few who went home wondering

if maybe one day they too could

play rugby for their country,”

Riden said.

Oyster catcher numbers

on the rise at estuary

AN ANNUAL bird count has

recorded black oyster catcher

bird numbers are at an all time

high.

City council ecologist Andrew

Crossland said last week

he counted a record number of

232 birds at the estuary.

The bird is

endemic to

New Zealand

and one the

world’s rarest

wading

birds. Also

known as

Andrew

Crossland

the variable

oyster

catcher or

toreapango.

The ever-hungry bird, eats day

and night during low tide and

can be seen on the mudflats of

the estuary looking for cockles,

crabs and marine worms.

Having adapted somewhat

to an urban environment, it

also feeds on earthworms and

grubs in the Linwood Paddocks

and the McCormacks

Bay sport field.

Unlike its name suggests,

it does not find oysters in the

estuary.

During the 80s, less than

10 birds were regularly seen

but numbers have slowly been

increasing over the years to

last year when 126 birds were

counted.

Crossland has been counting

the oyster catchers since 1985.

The total population of this

species is between five and

6000 birds.

Avon-Heathcote Estuary

Ihutai Trust manager, Tanya

Jenkins said people can help

the black oyster catcher other

estuary birds thrive.

“When you walk your dog

along the estuary at low tide

and you can see birds feeding

on the mudflats, keep dogs

Award-winning conductor’s vision for band

SUMNER SILVER Band has

welcomed an award-winning

conductor into its ranks.

Last year Ray Blampied retired

from his role as musical director

for the band and handed the

baton over to John Mason, of

Tasmania.

Mason has been a member of

the NZ Army Band for seven

years, and also played BBb Bass

with the NZ National Band

at the 2017 world brass band

championships.

He won the BBb Bass solo at

the NZ national championships

in 2016 and 2017, and finished

second in the Eb Bass solo

in 2021. He is also a playing

member of Woolston Band.

Mason’s strategy to ensure a

strong future for the Sumner

band includes the establishment

of a development band to run

alongside the main one. This

group will be open to anyone

from the age of 10 upwards who

has a basic ability on a brass

band instrument and wishes to

build on this by playing in an

ensemble.

It will meet on Thursdays

at Redcliffs School, prior to

the main Sumner band

practice.

Mason is also available as a

brass instrument teacher and

can be contacted via the band’s

website.

Although the RSA has

decided to limit the Anzac Day

commemoration in Sumner

this year, the band will still be

playing before and after the short

service at the memorial gates.

As a community band Sumner

is always ready to welcome brass

players into its ranks. The band

practises from 6.30-8.30pm

every Thursday evening at

Redcliffs School.

Contact Peter Croft on 3849

534 or visit the band’s website if

you are interested.

HELM: John

Mason, the

conductor for

Sumner Silver

Band, intends

to establish a

Harbour benefits from Jobs for Nature

NEW COLLABORATION: Many locals are employed in

the programme and are learning how to make a positive

contribution to conservation.

LOADED UP: Daniel Byrnes (centre photo), Kamahi for Nature team member at Rāpaki,

‘BY MANY hands the task

is completed’ is the new

programme bringing together

conservation workers to restore

the environment of Lyttelton

Harbour.

Conservation Volunteers

New Zealand (Ōtautahi) has

partnered with Te Hapū o Ngāti

Wheke at Rāpaki, and Living

Springs at Allendale, to manage

a restoration programme in

Lyttelton Harbour.

The programme is called He

rau ringa e oti ai – by many

hands the task is completed.

“Our goals are to increase

resilience through the protection,

maintenance and restoration of

the environment, following the

Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour

management plan. This aims to

restore the harbour ki uta ki tai

(from mountains to the sea),”

said Conservation Volunteers

New Zealand co-ordinator Katie

Dunlop.

The programme is funded

for three years through the

Department of Conservation’s

Jobs for Nature fund and will

employ 48 people over three

years.

Many locals are employed

in the programme and

are learning how to make

a positive contribution to

conservation, through the

provision of practical, naturebased

experiences and skill

development.

The benefits for Lyttelton

Harbour are wide-spread and

numerous. The current focus

is on managing pest, plant and

animal species at Living Springs

and Rāpaki, restoration of native

habitat through riparian and

general planting projects, and

community engagement.

One of the overall goals is

to improve the water quality

in the harbour by reducing

sedimentation.

So far on Rāpaki land the team

have removed over 400 pest

animals and will be planting

over 12,000 trees and plants this

coming planting season starting

in May.

A BIG thank you to our local

community board member

Darrell Latham for drawing

the community’s attention to

the appalling state of the seats

on the Sumner promenade. It

looks more like a war zone

than the most popular

promenade and beach in

Christchurch.

Extensive upgrading of the

promenade was included in the

Coastal Pathway design plans.

But for some reason a decision

was then made by (city) council

staff to exclude it from the

implementation plans.

Clearly a major upgrade

of the promenade is needed.

With sea level rise and bigger

storms the seawall will need to

be strengthened and raised as

part of this project. Councillors

should be making a decision now

to initiate this project.

In the meantime the seats

should be brought up to a

reasonable standard, the weeds

sprayed, the multiple lakes near

Stoke St raised and resealed, and

pathways of smooth seal laid

between each seawall stairway

and its beach ramp so that people

using the beach can walk in bare

feet in comfort.

–Alisdair Hutchison,

Sumner

Not-so clean or

green

My wife and I walked our dog

from Mt Pleasant to Sumner return.

On our way to Sumner while

crossing the causeway we were

prepared with a bag from our car

to uplift the odd piece of litter.

We don’t like walking past disposed

plastic and other rubbish.

We feel we’d be as lazy as the people

dropping it, if we were to walk

past it without picking it up.

Within five minutes of starting

the walk, we located an abandoned

suitcase in the estuary.

We then crossed the causeway

with it and by the time we got to

Beachville Rd the suitcase was

full of other litter, cans, bottles,

plastics – all would have ended

up in the estuary.

Whatever happened to the

tidy Kiwi and clean green New

Zealand? It shocked us at just

how much rubbish there was,

most likely thrown from passing

cars. It was all destined for the

ocean. Shocker.

–Earle Borrell

invention of one Mr Edward

(Ted) C Lane, chemist, of Oamaru.

His old factory from 1908, in

Oamaru’s historic precinct, still

bears the Lane’s Emulsion trademark

and motto: “It’s Famous

because It’s Good,” and next

time you’re in Oamaru be sure

to check it out at the Harbour St

Bakery and Deja Moo Icecream

Parlour.

The main ingredients were cod

liver oil and beechwood creosote,

as well as salts of lime and soda,

brandy (as a solvent!), and various

‘secret ingredients’ including

cinnamon and saccharin, with

egg yolks as an emulsifier to bind

the concoction together.

The resulting opaque yellow,

creamy emulsion with its

distinctive smoky–fishy–spice

flavour profile was marketed as

a general tonic as well as “blood

purifier” and a cure-all for consumption

(tuberculosis), croup,

bronchitis, asthma, catarrh, and

other ailments of the throat and

lung.

In spite of its rather unique

taste and texture – Ted’s own

daughter Molly admitted “I

didn’t like it!” – Lane’s Emulsion

was a healthy mainstay for

generations of New Zealand and

even Australian children.

Ted opened a branch factory

in Melbourne sometime in the

1920s, with international sales in

Britain and around the Pacific.

While the health benefits may

have been perhaps questionable,

and a spoon of cod liver oil

much cheaper if perhaps less

palatable, Ted Lane also excelled

at marketing, with signage and

graphics appearing on buildings

and banners around the country

as well as old Melbourne city,

and of course in our own port of

Lyttelton.

The old Lane’s Emulsion sign

below the Timeball Station

remained into the 1960s, until it

apparently burnt down, some say

in an act of arson.

While Ted passed on in 1947,

the business continued along

with its famous brand until the

last bottle of Lane’s Emulsion

shuttled off the production line

in 1984, no doubt a victim of

the so-called ‘modern vitamin

industry’.

Crombie and Price of Oamaru

bought the business in 1971

and still hold the rights to the

recipe, with an approved Lane’s

Emulsion flavoured ice cream

being released by Deja Moo in

2014 … minus the cod liver oil

and creosote but apparently still

quite medicinal – “Take None

But Lane’s”.

Terauoriwa Gapper combining motherhood

and playing rugby.

Coming off a busy few weeks with

Matatū, you’d forgive Terauoriwa

Gapper if she looked to take a few breaks

here and there. However, the mother of

three is looking ahead to the club rugby

season, thanks to her involvement with

the University of Canterbury Premier

Women’s side and her kids with Lyttelton

and Shirley Boys’ High School. It sets

up a busy time of year for Gapper, but

one that she enjoys and looks forward to

every year.

“As we’ve increased the opportunities

for us at the high-performance level, it

has helped emphasis the importance of

club rugby for me.” said Gapper.

It’s something that Gapper is being able

to experience from the sidelines too,

with all three of her children playing

rugby in the community game, with her

two youngest playing out of Lyttelton

and her oldest set to play for Shirley

Boys’ High School this year.

“All three of my children played for

Lyttelton last year which was pretty

cool, and they love playing rugby. For

them, it’s all about having fun and the

friendships that they have in their rugby

team, and the club (Lyttelton) really

makes that for them. It’s been awesome

to see their love of rugby develop over

the last few years.”

“With Club Rugby being one of our only

pathways for so long, it has provided

a great place for the talent and depth

in our game to develop, providing that

opportunity for anyone

to play the game, such

as myself when I first

started, and grow that

skill base.”

Beginning her rugby

journey in 2015

following playing

netball, Gapper’s career

has gone from strength

to strength, with the

club game a key driver

in her success.

“Now that we have both Super Rugby

and Farah Palmer Cup, it is really

important for us to still be involved in

the club game and help continue that

development that has been so key in how

we got to where we are now.”

For them, it’s all

about having

fun and the

friendships that

they have in their

rugby team”

- Terauoriwa Gapper

“It’s been great too integrating in to a

second club, Jaakoby, my oldest, has

been there the last five years, so with

him playing and my husband, James,

coaching, we’ve been

able to really feel a part

of the Lyttelton club!”

said Gapper.

“It’s been a very handson

experience, and

there’s some great

people out there making

the club what it is.”

Since making the

leap into the game,

Terauoriwa Gapper has

certainly enjoyed her

experience in the game, urging people

to get involved and give it a go in 2022.

“It’s really important to give it a go, you

learn so much about yourself and the

friendships you make are those that

will last you a lifetime.”

Gapper said, something

that she remains the perfect

example for as another

season awaits!

Subaru Forester provides that extra grip

A FRIEND AND I were talking

about his new car. Well, it’s not

new, but it is a late model frontwheel-drive

wagon with a high

power engine.

He was telling me how much he

misses the four-wheel-drive system

of his previous car – a Volkswagen

Passat. He says the 4Motion system

that car incorporated provided

stability and surety in a corner,

something front-wheel-drive only

doesn’t provide to the same extent.

I can attest to that, every time

I get in a car with four-wheeldrive

I’m immediately aware of

the feel that gives you, that solid

connection with the road. There’s

none more notable than Subaru’s

symmetrical full-time four-wheeldrive

network, it’s a cracker in

terms of how it makes you feel such

a part of the car.

That drive system is part of every

new Subaru sold in this country

and is one of the elements that

make the Forester sport utility

vehicle such a trusted and popular

model within Subaru’s line-up.

The Forester has just had a

facelift for 2022 and the changes

include revised headlights, fog

lights, front bumper and grille

treatment.

The range also gets greater

technology, the Eyesight driver

assistance network has additional

functions such as lane centering

monitoring, lane departure

prevention and autonomous

emergency steering.

Subaru’s off-road X-mode

system has also been advanced to

re-engage once the vehicle speed

drops to 35km/h or less. There is a

multitude of other goodies added

across the range including a driver

gesture system to adjust internal

temperature.

However, it’s fair to say the

entry-level model as tested doesn’t

get all of the enhancements but,

nevertheless, the Forester as a range

hasn’t lost any of the fundamentals

that have made it the vehicle of

choice for everyday transport and

adventure-seekers alike. The latter,

particularly, it is a popular SUV in

the ski-field car park and anywhere

where that little bit of extra grip is

needed.

That well-proven method of

getting drive to the road, or any

surface for that matter, is also

matched by another Subaru point

of difference. The 2.5-litre petrol

engine is a boxer type, or just like

my family’s old Jowett Javelin and

Volkswagen’s of my childhood, a

horizontally-opposed engine.

As advances in technology

would have it, the Forester’s boxer

engine is state-of-the art with twinoverhead

camshafts and four valves

over each piston. Unlike some

turbocharged Forester models from

the past, the Forester has been sans

turbo here since around 2012, and

really it doesn’t need forced boost,

it is a strong engine and the power

outputs reflect that.

Subaru claims peak power

when weather is at its worst.

of 136kW with 239Nm of

torque. While these figures

arrive at 5800rpm and 4400rpm

respectively, it must be taken

into account that there is a lot

of natural torque developed by

the flat-four design. Response to

accelerator request is delightful

with a solid impetus developed and

transmitted through the freedom of

a continuously variable automatic

transmission. Subaru has been

developing the driveline constantly

for as long as I can remember

and today’s system is smooth,

responsive, forceful yet frugal.

Along with the elements needed

to keep pace with today’s traffic,

the fuel usage engineers have been

constantly leaning out the boxer

unit to a point where today it is

little different to any inline fourcylinder

engine with much the

same power outputs.

Subaru claims a combined cycle

average of 7.4-litres per 100km for

the 2498cc unit. During my testing

time the fuel usage readout was

listing a constant 8l/100km figure,

which isn’t that far distant.

At 100km/h the tachometer is

pointing to a lazy 1500rpm, the

engine merely sipping fuel at the

rate of 5.5l/100km.

On the subject of figures, the

Forester will also accelerate to

100km/h in 9.5sec and will make

a highway overtake of 6.6sec (80-

120km/h).

One of the other benefits of the

Forester’s driveline is that with the

way the engine is laid flat, much of

• Price – Subaru Forester,

• Performance –

• Fuel usage – 7.4/100km

its weight sits low in the sub-frame.

That keeps the centre of gravity

low, maintaining balance and

composure in a corner. Sport utility

vehicles are not ordinarily known

for their handling prowess, but the

Forester has tidy handling manners

and much feel through the steering.

I mentioned that involving

aspect of the Forester’s make-up

in my introduction, it keeps the

driver fully informed of the way

it is handling cornering pressure.

Subaru has revised the spring and

damper rates on the Forester, ride

comfort has been made greater and

there seems to be little effect on the

way the vehicle works in a corner.

I’ve written many times over

the years how double wishbone

suspension provides a stable

platform and the Forester benefits

from that system at the rear. Up

front a tradition strut system is

utilised.

The Forester lands here in three

specifications, but take into account

that there are actually five models

to choose from, two of those being

hybrids. I’ve driven the latter and

can report that the hybrid is also

a worthy proposition if you feel

like doing just that little bit of

something for the environment.

As mentioned the evaluation car

was the base model non-hybrid

and it sits at $42,990. If you like a

little bit of extra bling, the X-Sport

model adds $5k while and all the

bells and whistles Premium variant

lists at $52,990. The hybrids start at

$47,990.

All have the same fundamentals

underneath, and bear in mind

that all variants come away with

a five-star Australasian New Car

Assessment Program safety rating.

My wife and I have been talking

about the vehicle we need to have

when I retire, we can’t afford to

run our old Toyota, it’s simply too

thirsty.

There’s a Subaru on the wish

list, but we can’t afford a Forester

so I’m thinking seriously about

an XV. It’s just a little smaller than

the Forester and it has just a 2-litre

engine, but it’s also a car that

gives you that full-on Subaru feel

through the driveline; that’s a safety

element as well as something that

will give you grip when the worst

weather hits Canterbury.

It’s really just a matter of

convincing my wife now is the time

to get that order in.
