Norm Beatty, MD
UF Health, Florida
On March 11, 2022, Dr. Stephen Scholand
met with Dr. Norm Beatty at the University
of Florida in Gainesville to explore the
potential for a new partnership in global
health education. A suggested collaborative
program called Global Health on the Farm
was discussed. Currently, it is estimated that
about 200,000 immigrant farm workers from
Mexico and elsewhere in Central America are
relied upon to harvest fruits and vegetables
from the vast farm areas of Florida.
Strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, and of
course citrus crops rely upon this workforce.
Communities of these immigrant workers are
housed locally and transported en masse
every day to perform the backbreaking work
of harvesting.
Until recently, there hasn’t been much
attention focused on the health of these
workers. Dr. Beatty and his team have begun
a series of volunteer-based efforts focused
on health screening, health education,
immunizations, and establishment of care
with local health resources and charities.
The partnership offers the chance for an
authentic global health experience, as the
workers come from various areas within
Central America with their own languages
and customs. Of course the health needs
are great, as often is found in this field. This
new initiative promises to be a rich learning
experience for medical students and a
significant benefit to the workers. We look
forward to growing this partnership in the
coming months.
