FROM THE PRESIDENT

GRAHAM KEYS

Welcome to April:

3

Dear Members,

Our first outing for 2022:

The AOMC British and European Motoring Show at Yarra Glen Racecourse provided a great start to 2022 with a good selection of

Wolseley Models dating way back to the early 30’s represented by a Hornet Special, and up to the mid 70’s featuring a FWD Wolseley Six

with at least another 20 other Wolseley’s in between, including 2 beautifully restored 4/44’s, there to celebrate their 70 th anniversary. In

fact by midday we had run out of room in our allocated space and had to park a couple of cars behind our front row. This was a very

profitable day for the AOMC who represent most of the Victorian car clubs at both State and Federal level as well as supporting the hobby

car movement in general throughout Victoria. Their most recent Delegates Meeting was attended by David Morris and me, and we learned

that over 960 display cars and about 60 motor bikes were present on the day. The weather was superb, with just enough wind to keep our

Wolseley Car Club flags flying. Congratulations to Garey Laken for a class trophy win in his superb Wolseley open tourer, and a big thanks

to all members who assisted on the day, with a special mention to Richard Graham who provided and set-up the much needed shade

awning. Proceeds from the day go directly to maintaining the huge variety of work that the AOMC carry out on our behalf.

Coming Outings

Another great day on this year’s calendar is the Kalorama Rally on March 20th. This well run event is always well attended by the Vintage

and Veteran clubs that we rarely get a chance to catch-up with. They provide us with a slightly different slant in motoring with their large

range of beautifully restored vehicles of all makes, many of which we do not get so see very often nowadays, as negotiating modern traffic

in vehicles with skinny tyres and poor (by today’s standards) brakes is definitely no picnic when careless and impatient drivers in modern

cars are encountered. The 24 th of April will see us travelling to Castlemaine, and the director for this event, Anthony van Emmerik has

assured us that it will be an enjoyable day. Jean’s events page will fill you in on all the details.

New Members:

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the following new members:

# 1624 Rachel Snedden from Thornbury, VIC -- 1967 Wolseley Mini Hornet MK III

# 1625 Peter Frost from Morphett Vale, NSW -- 1959 Wolseley 15/60

# 1626 Michael Clements from, Rochedale QLD -- 1962 Wolseley 24/80

# 1627 Vijaykanth Rasathuri from Dandenong North, VIC -- 1959 Wolseley 15/60

To all our new members, we thank you for joining, and hope that membership of

the Wolseley Car Club will be advantageous to you, and we look forward to being

of assistance wherever we can. We look forward to meeting you all at

subsequent meetings, outings and National Rallies. We always welcome pictures

of your cars, and special thanks to Peter and Lesley Frost for sending us a photo

of their lovely, and now quite rare, 15/60.

Wolshed News:

The latest car to leave the Wolshed started its migration to Echuca on a trailer behind Brett and Kylie Hopson’s 4WD following last month’s

working bee. The blue 24/80 MK I will join their 6/80 as the family’s second Wolseley restoration project. Accompanied by their five (5)

daughters and a boyfriend, the crew camped overnight and joined us at Yarra Glen for the abovementioned British and European Motoring

Show on the following Sunday. It’s very encouraging to see some younger people in our club again.

March General Meeting on ZOOM:

Trials for broadcasting the General Meetings are

now gaining momentum thanks to our Tech

Team, namely Richard Graham and Andrew

Whalen. This month’s trial saw much

improvement in both the audio and picture quality

as judged by the six members who participated.

As we improve our production, we are hoping to

attract many more members, particularly those

living in outer country areas as well as those

living interstate and overseas. Thank you to all

who took the trouble to log-in and join us. We are

hoping to attract many more ZOOM members in

the coming months.

Cheers…Graham

24/80 Lower Radiator Hose

Produced by Australian O/E manufacturer Mackay,

these are a special batch manufactured from the

original moulds specifically for the Wolseley Car

Club, and are less than a month old.

Although still available from some outlets, provided

they have catalogues old enough, (and they have

an operator who knows what a Wolseley is) the

‘new” hoses themselves could easily be years old

with detreating rubber, particularly at the hearer

outlet join.

Forget hunting around and paying heaps too much.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Contact Peter McIntosh to procure your 24/80
lower radiator hose now while current stocks last.
Retail price $59.00
WCC price just $40.00
Exchange Front Wheel Cylinders
for 24/80 & 15/60
Sandblasted and re-sleeved in Stainless Steel, these wheel
cylinders will now have a greatly extended life, and can be
supplied with re-polished pistons, new seals, dustcovers
and even new bleed screws and mounting bolts.
RACV British & European Motoring Show Yarra Glen Racecourse February 20 th 2022
This was not only our first Wolseley outing for the year,
but also the first time this motoring show has been
held for the last two years and what a turnout! There
were cars and people everywhere! There was a real
buzz as car clubs and members displayed their cars,
caught up with friends or car enthusiasts, or participated
in judging of club cars. The Wolseley banner was
flying high and many thanks to our members who made the effort to be part of the
day with many Wolseleys on display. On entry, participants were issued with a
booklet outlining the day’s events and role of the AOMC. It also contained an excellent
article written by our Wolseley Car Club President, Graham Keys, on
“Celebrating the 70 th Anniversary of the Wolseley 4/44.”
Outing to Castlemaine Sunday 24 th April
This has been widely publicised in previous Hornets and is shaping up to be a great event, thanks to the careful planning by our club member,
Anthony van Emmerik. Please see the arrangements as detailed below.
Weekend Trip to Shepparton – Friday 20 th May and returning home on Sunday 22 nd May
This great weekend has been carefully planned by our members Bev and Rob Asquith. Some of the highlights for the weekend include a
visit to the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM); the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE); Southern Rod and Custom and the Australian Botanical
Gardens. There is a separate flyer in this Hornet edition that outlines the Itinerary and arrangements for the weekend. Also included
is a separate Registration form to complete for those interested in attending. The deadline for this form is Thursday 14 th April. There is no
up-front payment but rather members are to make their own motel booking at the Courtyard Motor Inn at a cost of $109 per night. This motel
has been reserved for our club. Other expenses to be paid for at the time of purchase.
THE EDITOR
JOHN GRAY
I was quite busy producing this
Hornet, a lot of “jiggling” in fitting
the photos, without gaps. I
haven’t credited every photo,
sorry, too many but thank you to the
photographers, Irene Robinson, David Morris,
Richard Graham and Graham Keys. Some photos
have got your name on, but not all. Thank you also
to our contributors this month, Rob Bothwell, Jerry
Wells and Peter Hartigan, without them I would be
filling pages from old magazines or old Hornets, so
please keep them coming. My 6/80 was all
finished for Yarra Glen and I took it for a test on
the Friday before, and to top up the petrol. When I
rolled out Saturday morning to wash it, I left a pool
of brake fluid behind and on inspecting the inside
of the rear wheel I find evidence that it hasn’t just
happened - I’ll report back when fixed. I seem to
remember working in that area a while back at the
old Chookshed with Mick Smith. I hope you are all
well or recovering quickly, I hope to see you soon.
John.
LIBRARIAN — PETER REID
Well the hard work is paying off as
all the workshop manuals and
driver’s handbooks have been
accounted for and processed. If
you still have one that I don’t know
about please tell me now before it goes to the computer for final audit. Now of course there remains the task of
sorting the new Tech. category so donations are really needed soonest. In this regard I must record the generous
donation from Lindsay Elliott who has parted with some very useful and valuable volumes which have particular
interest for our vehicles . So many of the trade lists refer only to the newer vehicles, which ours are really not. He
has also given some shelf labels which will add a professional touch to the shelves. With clean windows and
washed curtains the room is looking brighter. Now to clear the seat stock and the racks can be extended. Don’t
forget that this is a Club resource for the benefit of all members. Perhaps later this year we can have an open
day to show off….but I did say perhaps and later.
Regards to all, Peter Reid
As mentioned in the minutes we have been given some shelving,
which John Mallia & Peter Reid collected from Brian McNaughton,
a friend of mine, seen here with me a lot of years ago with an
Oldsmobile I once owned. We’re supposed to be getting ready to
paint it instead of clowning around. I have known Brian since Boy
Scouts, he played drums later on, is listed in “Who’s Who of
Australian Rock’n’Roll”, I’m not, though we played in the same
band at one stage but then I swapped my guitar for a rifle.
GENERAL MEETING FEBRUARY 2022.
Held at the Horrie Watson Pavilion, Deepdene
on Tuesday 1 st March 2022. The meeting was
declared open at 8.00PM, President Graham
Keys in the chair. Graham welcomed everyone
to the meeting, especially those participating via “Zoom”. Members
participating via “Zoom” included John Wilkinson, Coral Jones,
Anthony Van Emerik, and Dave Clark. Graham mentioned the
success of the recent British & European Car Show at Yarra Glen,
the AOMC have stated that they had 960 cars, 60 motorcycles, and
1000 people attend. Some sad news is that Ken Henderson, whom
many members will remember had the Austin Taxi, suffered a
major stroke in December, and has tragically passed away.
Members are assisting with clearing the Austin Westminster body
from his factory, which he had ‘borrowed’ from the Club for welding
practice.
EDITOR’S REPORT: John Gray
Graham thanked John for yet another excellent magazine this
month. We have had many nice comments from members.
Waiting on a couple of reports for the April magazine – we have
another installment from Peter Hartigan on the re-upholstering of
his 24/80, a story from Rob Bothwell on his first car, and many
photos from the Yarra Glen Show, Deadline for May are 25 th March
for articles, and 1 st April for reports.
SPARE PARTS: Peter McIntosh
Wolshed next Saturday 5 th March (sausage sizzle), and 19 th March.
The 24/80 for restoration has been removed to Echuca to it’s new
owners, we now need to concentrate on the 24/80 we are wrecking
(removal of engine), and the two 6/110’s. Peter requested that all
fasteners be placed in a container, and labelled. Kevin Haynes has
asked for any old Wolseley engine and gearbox mounts and
suspension bump stops, so that he can re-use the steel parts.
A reminder that we have 24/80 top and bottom radiator hoses in
stock, and also re-sleeved brake slave cylinders. Contact Peter or
Graham for all parts enquiries.
WOLSHED MANAGER: Clyde Wilson Clyde is an apology tonight..
SPECIAL EVENTS: Jean Denning
in Hornet.
The next event is the Kalorama Rally on 20 th March (we will have
Wolseley Stationary Engines on display), and this year the event
will feature “Specials” of all marques. Gary Laken has been asked
by the organizers to bring his special for display.
The event to Castlemaine on 24 th April is fully organized, and the
Mini Rally weekend to Shepparton on 20-22 May is being sorted
out by Bev & Rob Asquith, and will be promoted via a flyer with the
next edition of Hornet. We are still looking (along with the NSW
9
Club), at a National Rally for 2023.
Graham thanked Jean for all her efforts in organizing and
coordinating these events.
American Motoring Show to be in late winter, Club Management
Seminar in Winter, Florence Thompson Tour on 29 th April to 1 st May
at Bendigo (being run by the AOMC on behalf of the RACV).
AOMC are negotiating with Insurers to try and establish a Public
Liability Policy for Car Clubs. (Some smaller Clubs cannot cope
smaller Clubs to run events such as Rallies etc. AOMC are also
talking to some people who want to form a Motorist’s Party for the
next State Election.
AOMC has the old VicRoads Engine Number records, and included
are some specifications on suspension springs for anyone
interested. Motorclassica is on again – 7 th to 9 th October.
Guest Speaker was Ian Berg (Gordon’s brother), who has written a
book about a motor body building firm based in Melbourne called
Jas Munro.
Peter Reid queried what the AOMC is going to do with the large
amount of funds they hold.
Graham Commented that Ian Berg’s book is a fabulous publication
with lots of amazing photos. We may obtain a couple of copies for
the Library.
“LITTLE CAR
LOST ?”
Does anyone know the present whereabouts of a 1904 Siddeley 6 HP car that has spent quite a lot of its life in Victoria.?
The presence of the car in this State is evidenced by the following photographs and documents.
1. The car was imported in about 1910 and used by Mr George Trewhella who lived in Trentham.
2. After WW1, it fell into disrepair but was purchased by Mr Warren Bonning of Melbourne who restored the vehicle to its
former glory. The photo below was taken during a parade in Melbourne as part of Australia Day celebrations in the 1970’s.
3. Last appearance of the car was in a sale catalogue for a Shannon’s auction in March 2000.
MY FIRST WOLSELEY – A 1953 4/44 story by Robert Bothwell.
In 1976 Jan and I lived in Maryborough Victoria. One day on an
errand to a part of the town I wasn’t familiar with I turned a corner
and there on a vacant block sat a black Wolseley which looked
fabulous with the chrome gleaming against the black body.
What’s more it was 100 % complete down to the original 7inch
Lucas fog lights. I found the owner and on further inspection notice
that the head was separate from the engine block, so it was a
definite non-runner. Being young and impetuous my heart ruled
my head and after some cash changed hands, I was the new
proud owner.
My wife Jan was not so convinced about my purchase given that
we had just bought a new home which had no sealed driveway,
no garage and not even a car port. I was surprised to find the car
had a little 4-cylinder engine; originally I had assumed that it
would have a 6 cylinder engine!
I wasted no time securing a new head gasket and replaced the head to see if the engine would run and to my surprise it did! Maybe it just
needed a new head gasket and nothing more. In 1977 I found an Ad in Restored Cars magazine for the Wolseley Car Club in Melbourne,
and I wasted no time in phoning about membership. I remember speaking to a young lady named Gillian who appeared a little disappointed
that I did not own a 6/90! In due course I received a letter about the club and a copy of the Hornet Newsletter.
I pressed on with my project when one day I jacked up the car from the side and the floor bent across the centre with a major rust issue. I
had made the fundamental error of not checking the car for structural rust. I intended to keep it, but a change of employment took us back
to Melbourne and to my eternal shame, I sold the 4/44 to a local chap who was restoring an MG Magnette – I received the princely sum of
$50.00! If only I knew what I know now. Even back then this was a rare model being made in 1953 so it had no timber glove boxes, just
open shelves each side of the black painted metal instrument cluster.
Back in Melbourne in 1978. I purchased my first 24/80 and joined the
Wolseley Car Club in 1979 but that, as they say, is another story.
Postscript: I did have the pleasure some years later of driving Fred
Holmes’ black 4/44 and I then realised what a delightful little gem
these cars are – wish I had kept my first one.
not my car but virtually in the same condition as the one I purchased.
Upholstery and the 24/80 (EPISODE #2. New Carpet and Seat Sliders.)
Peter Hartigan.(Member #1622) Harrington, NSW.
Prior to installing new
carpet I fitted ‘modern’
sliders for the front seats
as the original ones were
a trial to live with. Just
about all post ‘70
Japanese cars use the
same slides with model
specific bolting brackets
riveted to each end, easy
to cut away (mine came
from a Nissan Navara). It
was then necessary to
weld a 100 x 25 mm
length of flat bar to fronts
of all 4 slides to utilise
original captive floor nuts.
( see pics). All door sills
were then faced with trimmers cardboard and black vinyl (to match under dash knee guards) glued without padding, directly to it.
With the exception of the side sections closest to the doors, the original moulded rubber floor mat under the seats was rotting away and
was replaced with a leather grained plastic door trim from a delivery van (reinforced with ply) and the riser behind your heels was faced
with vinyl covered ply with 12 mm foam padding. Clarkefoam 8 mm black insulation foam was then glued completely over the transmission
hump and rear tunnel and underfelt fitted to the rest of the floor.
Red unipile carpet (supplied by Daleys Trimmers supplies) was then cut to fit in several pieces with much use of cardboard patterns, not a
job for the faint hearted. Caution here, always lay the carpet with the pile brushing forward. Once fitted to satisfaction each piece was
bound with 35 mm black acrylic binding tape and held in place with press studs. Various side trim pieces were glued in place.
Upholstery and the 24/80 (EPISODE #3. Seats and Door Cards.)
After the fitting of new sliders to floor for front seats it was necessary to remove all upholstery from seat frames to facilitate some simple
cutting and welding. All pipe framing was cut off level with bottom of seat squab and a length of 40x40 mm angle iron welded (fr - bk) on
the interior of each side with some sensible reinforcements. Some tedious grinding will be necessary to allow the locking action to work
freely as the seat is mated to the floor. At this point I was careful to fit seats a little closer to the door
to accommodate rigid cable seat belts to rise between them. (I was later to thin down padding on
seat sides as well to achieve a 30mm gap between seats).
BMC, with misplaced trust in elastic web, used 4 single continuous webs to support the seat and
back, which allowed far too much give in use. Experience led me to use double layered 5x4 heavy
duty interlaced webs in seats and seperate softer webs in backs. The original back padding was
mostly reusable but for the seats I installed very high density 50 mm foam with 25 mm strips of softer
foam on each top side to give thigh support. The whole was added to with the inclusion of 9 mm foam
sewn into the vinyl covering. Most people equate thickness of foam with comfort, but the secret is
correct density - and there are many grades to choose from.
The original stitching pattern was faithfully followed when applying the red vinyl covering, (Daleys
transport range) although I chose to eliminate the ash trays in the back of the seats after several
minor
injuries, (those black plastic knobs are razor
sharp). I compensated by fitting very useful
map pockets in the outside backs, lined with
synthetic suede. All pipings were done in
black to tie the colour scheme together. The
rear seat also received high density foam
and original finish.
The door card boards were replaced with 3
mm MDF that received two thorough coats
of acrylic paint each side after all necessary
holes had been cut, and new plastic
sheeting sealed to doors - they’ll never
warp. Ashtrays were also eliminated from
the front doors and certain liberties taken
with the design finish, I’m sure Lord Nuffield
would approve.The blue rubber armrests
were washed with wax cleaner before
application of several very light coats of
Motorspray vinyl, this is brilliant stuff - but
apply lightly.
When I am game enough to remove front
and back window glass, episode #4 will
deal with headlining.
