ALEX
SCOTT
AGE: 18
POSITION: Midfielder
SIGNED: January 2020
The teenager has come into his own
this season with 35 appearances in all
competitions, including four goals in the
Championship. His first for the club came in a
2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
At just 18 years of age, Scott has made himself
one to watch for both now and the future and
he’s certainly impressed his manager, Nigel
Pearson.
The England Under-19 international was
handed a new four-year contract last August,
with the news confirmed on his 18th birthday
just five months after he was awarded his first
professional deal.
Scott became Guernsey FC’s youngest ever
senior player at the age of 16, before being
picked up by City’s scouts. Upon joining the
Robins' Academy setup, he progressed from
Under-23s football to experiencing first-team
football last season.
He made three appearances during the 2020/21
campaign, with his debut coming against Luton
Town in April.
THE
GAFFER
Hello and
welcome
to our
penultimate
home game of
the season.
This evening we go up against a strong
Sheffield United team who are very much in
the fight for a top-six spot.
Due to deadlines I’ve had to write these notes
before Good Friday’s match against Stoke
City so without reflecting on that result and
a Peterborough team we should have done
much better against.
We have some talented players who have made
great strides this season. However people want
to look at the campaign, I know that we have
had some real successes too but unfortunately
what we haven’t been is consistent enough to
get results.
We are always looking at how we can progress.
The close-season programme for the players
has all been taken care of already and in terms
of how we shape the squad there are plans in
place. It’s always a mixture between planning
WE HAVE SOME TALENTED
PLAYERS WHO HAVE MADE GREAT
STRIDES THIS SEASON...
BUT UNFORTUNATELY WHAT WE
HAVEN’T BEEN IS CONSISTENT
ENOUGH TO GET RESULTS
regardless of the outcome, we know we have a
new challenge in front of us today.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side are in the mix for
the play-offs so we need to match their energy
and show our own quality.
Last time at Ashton Gate was a frustrating 1-1
draw against Peterborough United where we
expected a much better team performance.
We can play well against the top sides in this
division, as we did against Bournemouth, but
then we showed our inconsistent side against
for the future, looking at how you get from A to
B, but of course A is the most important place
and that is the present.
There is a lot of hard work to come but our
focus remains on the final four games, starting
this evening.
Enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige
SHEFFIELD UNITED
DID YOU
KNOW?
In the 2003 FA Cup semi-final Blades striker Paul Peschisolido was
denied a goal by what is considered one of the greatest saves
of all-time. Arsenal keeper David Seaman somehow managed
to scoop the ball away at point-blank range before Phil Jagielka
blazed off target as the Blades were beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford.
KEY PLAYER
27
MORGAN
GIBBS-WHITE
The Stafford-born midfielder has enjoyed
a great season on loan from Wolves, with
Paul Heckingbottom’s side rumoured to be
considering a bid to make him a permanent
figure at Bramall Lane.
His form earned him a place in WhoScored.com’s
Championship Team of the Month for March, with
Sheffield United pushing for a top-six finish.
The 22-year-old has so far netted 10 goals in all
competitions and assisted seven more for his
teammates from 31 appearances, with recent
star-man performances against Middlesbrough –
a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win – and Barnsley.
Gibbs-White is a product of the Wolves Academy
and made his first team debut in a 2-0 FA Cup win
against Stoke City in January 2017. He
helped Wolves win promotion to
the Premier League in 2018/19
before a brief spell on loan
at Swansea City. He joined the
Blades on loan in September,
scoring in his first two games
against Peterborough United
and Preston North End.
THE TOP SIX IS WITHIN SHEFFIELD
UNITED’S GRASP WITH JUST FOUR
GAMES TO GO, AS THE BLADES AIM
TO RETURN TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE
AT THE FIRST ATTEMPT.
They face stiff competition for
a play-off spot from the likes
of Middlesbrough, Blackburn
Rovers, Coventry City and
Millwall to name just a few, but
then the Championship has
never been known for a smooth
and easy ride.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side come
into today's fixture off the back
of a last-gasp defeat against
Reading on Good Friday.
Lucas Joäo's 17th-minute
opener for Reading was
cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye
in the 90th minute, which
looked like it was going to
salvage a late point only for
the Royals to deliver the sucker
punch two minutes later through
Tom Mcintyre. United will now
be hoping to capitalise after
seventh-placed Middlesbrough
could only draw with AFC
Bournemouth, while Blackburn
lost at Peterborough.
The Blades have been hit by
injuries, with Jayden Bogle,
David McGoldrick and Rhian
Brewster ruled out for the
season, and defenders Chris
Basham, Enda Stevens and
Blades defender Chris Basham challenges Nahki Wells during the Robins'
2-0 defeat at a snowy Barmall Lane earlier this season
George Baldock also facing time
out on the sidelines. This has
forced the club to act outside of
the traditional transfer window
with defender Filip Uremovic
arriving on a deal to the end of
the season, after his contract
with Russian side Rubin Kazan
was suspended.
After Easter Monday’s clash in
BS3, United host Cardiff City
before travelling to QPR, who
still have an outside chance
of finishing in the play-offs
themselves. They finish their
season against Fulham, who
are all-but-promoted as things
stand.
It’s not an easy run-in for
manager Heckingbottom,
who moved up from his role
as Under-23 coach after the
departure of former boss
Slaviša Jokanović in November.
A former Sheffield Wednesday
player, the 44-year-old is
chasing his second promotion
after leading Barnsley to the
Championship in a doublewinning
2016/17 season.
CONWAY
TO DO IT
ANOTHER ROBINS PLAYER WITH
A BRIGHT FUTURE, TOMMY
CONWAY IS LOOKING FORWARD
TO MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO
SHOW THE CITY FAITHFUL
WHAT HE CAN DO…
It’s 12 months since then
18-year-old Tommy
Conway made his debut
for the club he had
been with since the age
of seven. In fact, it’s
closing in on a year to the day
since he scored his first goal for
the Robins, away to Millwall at
the start of May 2021.
Conway has had to be more
patient this season, especially
after recovering from an
ankle injury at the start of the
campaign, but there’s a lot of
promise which comes with the
Academy graduate.
Looking back on the last year, the
striker has learnt a lot and recalls
the moment which marked the
start of his first-team journey.
“Me and Alex Scott were asked
to train on the Thursday and
we went back on the Friday as
normal with no idea at all,” he said,
remembering City’s away trip to
Swansea City in February 2021. 4
Scott Murray said: ‘you’re
bench’. It was a 20-man
squad with nine on the
bench but I couldn’t quite
believe it. We travelled up
with the rest of the lads on
the coach, I did my initiation
which was the Thiago Silva
song (Dave x AJ Tracey).
Everyone buzzed off it,
everyone enjoyed it,” he said.
City won 3-1 at the Liberty
Stadium and while Conway
didn’t make it off the bench,
his debut came shortly after
at Coventry City. However, it
wasn’t until the home match
against Luton Town that he
earned his first start.
“Yes that was good!”
Conway told THE ROB NS. “The
day before the gaffer said:
‘Tommy Conway, you’re
starting.’ I couldn’t quite
believe it because you had
other players in there so for
him to put his trust in me
was a proud moment for me
and my family. I did alright
too and played the full 90
minutes.
“Still to this day the likes of
And Weimann, Nahki Wells,
Antoine Semenyo and Chris
Martin are helping me out
and I’d add Andy King to that
list too. Even though he’s a
midfielder, he helps out all
of the young lads. Nahki is
really good, Andi is likewise
and they’re always giving us
tips to make us younger lads
better players.”
Conway has been patient
this season though, keeping
his match sharpness with
minutes for the Under-23s,
with whom he recently
scored a hat-trick against
Crewe Alexandra.
He explained: “With those
games some people might
sack them off but if you do
well you can only make the
gaffer think about you.
"Do well in those games and
“It’s different playing in the
watching you too. The main
difference is the quality, both
you a better player.
“Some people might think
it’s harder but when you get
on the pitch it is still another
other players. The technical
side changes compared to
to move my body and use the
Spirits were high
in the City camp
after a 2-1
home win over
Chesterfield on September 29th
1987, which took them to the top
of the league.
But they then drifted downwards,
eventually reaching 14th following
a 2-1 defeat at Aldershot on
Even so, journalist Richard Latham
reminded us that Terry Cooper
had built: “One of the most
experienced squads in the Third
Division for a net outlay of £51,000
in transfer fees…the envy of many
Third Division bosses.”
before four wins and a draw in
December won the Manager of the
Steve Galliers answered critics by
scoring a brace in the 3-2 home
win v York City. Our next visitors
Fulham fell victim to the on-fire
Carl Shutt, who scored all four in
a 4-0 triumph. The Yorkshireman
then scored the winner away at
Doncaster Rovers before Rob
Newman converted from the spot
to earn a draw at Gillingham.
But the big result was the 5-2
trouncing of Brighton & Hove
Albion at Ashton Gate on
December 28th, which ended their
17-match unbeaten run and saw
City overtake the Seagulls into
fourth position.
City dominated the first 20
minutes before Alan Walsh’s
free-kick was headed home by
defender John Pender. Left-back
and just before half-time a brilliant
Tony Fitzpatrick heading in at the
But the Seagulls staged a
comeback after the break and
Cooper admitted suffering a
few nerves when City’s lead was
reduced to 3-2 with 15 minutes
to play. Up stepped Walsh with a
moment of individual brilliance to
turn and smash the ball into the
net. With one minute of normal
time left, Walsh crossed for
Joe Jordan to seal victory.
