France’s third largest wine region is popular for its white wines, but it also offers some remarkable reds whose quality is increasingly attracting attention. Combining an incredible mosaic of vineyard sites with superb authenticity, Loire reds cover the flavour spectrum and are gaining traction internationally. LOIRE VALLEY FOCUS THE VINEYARDS AT DOMAINE BENOÎT ROCHER T he visit engulfs you in a whirlwind of emotions, memories and flavours. Discovering the vineyards of the Loire Valley is like diving into an enormous region where the rolling hills seem to fuse with the heart of the Loire, France’s longest river whose banks are home to myriad landscapes and grape varieties. From Melon de Bourgogne to Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon blanc for the whites, and Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Pinot noir for the reds, the Loire wine region encompasses a unique array of 24 grape varieties. Strangely, however, some appellations, such as Sancerre, have built their reputation on their white wines, despite the fact that growing reds is particularly worthwhile here. For connoisseurs and inquisitive newbies alike, there is every style and price. At the core of the range is often Cabernet Franc, a distinctive grape variety, extolled by the French writer François Rabelais in the 16 th century.
