Who gets your vote on May 21
Australia heads to the
polls on May 21 to
determine who will govern us
for the next three years.
Locally, a field of seven
candidates will contest
the seat of Mackellar:
sitting member and Liberal
candidate Jason Falinski;
Labor’s Paula Goodman;
Independent Dr Sophie
Scamps; The Greens’ Ethan
Hrnjak; The New Liberals’
Barry Steele; United Australia
Party’s Christopher Ball; and
One Nation’s Darren Dickson.
We approached key
candidates for their election
‘pitch’ to voters; you can read
their messages in our special
election preview (see p30).
(Barry Steele featured in
last month’s magazine; UAP
did not reply to our email
approach and One Nation
announced its candidacy as
this magazine was in final
production stage.)
The 2022 election promises
to be the closest in decades,
with the real prospect of a
hung parliament hovering.
While Mackellar has never
been held by anyone other
than a Liberal candidate,
word on the street suggests
Jason Falinski will face a real
fight from his rivals, who
have a common theme to
their campaigns: climate – its
change and its consequence.
Thats’s not to say Mr
Falinski, a self-confessed
‘modern Liberal’, isn’t
focused on that issue too,
while also pitching the
economy and job creation, as
well as stability and national
security, as priorities.
However, Mr Falinski
must overcome a perception
within a good portion of
our community that his
government has been “asleep
at the wheel” on climate
management.
Only time will tell.
