Our most important election in decades
Independent candidate for Mackellar
Dr Sophie Scamps says the ongoing
impacts of climate change, the spectre of
over-development, plus Mackellar residents’
opinions being taken for granted
in Canberra, make the 2022 Federal election
the most important in decades.
“We live in one of the most beautiful
parts of Australia. We have the best
beaches in the world, amazing bushland
and national parks, a thriving local
economy and we are a tight-knit community
that looks after each other,” Dr
Scamps said.
“However our precious way of life is
under threat. We have already experienced
the impacts of climate change
in our community – coastal erosion at
our beaches continues while the recent
record-breaking rain led to flash flooding
that damaged property, our roads
and cost small businesses dearly.
“As a GP in Narrabeen I remember
seeing patients, including many children
and older residents, suffering from respiratory
illnesses, and breathing problems
caused by the smoke from the Black
Summer bushfires in 2019 and 2020.”
Dr Scamps says over-development also
threatens our local environment and way
of life in Mackellar.
“If the current Member for Mackellar
gets his way, we could see more high
rises and land clearing here on the
Beaches, as he continues his advocacy for
looser planning laws.”
She said anyone who has tried to
access public outpatient services at
Northern Beaches Hospital, or get mental
health support, also knows our local
health system is struggling.

for 20 years and now I want to step up
and help care for our community as
your Independent MP for Mackellar,” Dr
Scamps said.
“People in Mackellar tell me they are
tired of their vote and voice being taken
for granted by Scott Morrison’s Liberal
Party and its local representative. We
need someone in Parliament who will
stand up for our community above all
else.
“At the moment we have a local member
who is told how to vote in Parliament
by Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce.”
She says that as an Independent, she
will be answerable only to the community.
“I will work tirelessly to ensure the
views of people in Mackellar are heard
and respected in Canberra and that decisions
are made in the best interests of all
Australians.
“As the member for Mackellar I will
support strong climate action that protects
our health and our way of life while
electrifying our economy and reducing
our energy bills.
“I support a minimum 50% reduction
in climate pollution by 2030, in line with
the Business Council of Australia, while
Scott Morrison’s Liberal Party is sticking
to Tony Abbott’s 2030 climate targets.
“I will also protect our way of life on
the Beaches by opposing poorly planned
over-development and I will back our
amazing local business community by
supporting lower taxes for small and
medium businesses.”
Dr Scamps says she will fight to
improve health outcomes and ensure
Mackellar gets its fair share of funding
to improve access to mental health
services and public outpatient services
on the Northern Beaches.
“I will work hard to bring a sense of
integrity back into politics, starting with
the long-promised and long-overdue
federal anti-corruption commission,” she
said. “This is something Scott Morrison’s
Liberal Party promised back in 2019 but
has failed to deliver.
“The current Member for Mackellar
has also said he is against it – it is now
clear the only way to bring integrity back
into politics is by voting independent on
election day.
“This election is the most important in
decades for the people of Mackellar and
we deserve to have a genuine voice representing
our community in Parliament.
The only way to do that at this election,
is to vote Independent.”
