Mapperley Tea by Bob Massey Before we had television and radio, people organised their own entertainment. From playing the piano at home or in the pub to attending shows in the village hall. Most people were expected to contribute to the entertainment with their friends and neighbours, so had a party piece that they could call upon when required. This applied to all family members, with children also taking part. The range of skills on show was far ranging, with everything from the usual singers, dancers and piano players to ventriloquists, jugglers, acrobats, strong men (and women ) to performers of monologues, comedians, storytellers and even Shakespearean scenes. From this pool of talent, amateur drama groups, like the one at the Methodist church, were formed, along with choirs at St Jude’s and shows at the Pavilion on Porchester Road, the Institute and Gilbert’s Tea Rooms on Mapperley top. The pubs also joined in. The Belle Vue was well known for its grand piano in the bar overlooking the countryside. And of course, the Punch Bowl on Porchester Road was originally a club with entertainment. One of the more unusual events was the live pigeon shoot organised by The Duke of Cambridge in their stable yard. These events, along with many others, not only provided the people of Mapperley with entertainment but were also the breeding ground for some local entertainers who eventually entered the profession. Douglas Byng, singer and entertainer, Lester Mathews, the film actor, Cyril Stapleton, band leader, to name a few. The shows also raised money for the many organisations and charities in the area. The building of the Majestic cinema provided another form of entertainment, and was also a venue for live performances. There were always live acts between the films, while the reels were being changed and the local artists were always in demand. The cinema also put on special shows for the patients of the Mapperley Hospital. The hospital itself had its own theatre that was used by the patients as well as by visiting groups and shows. I visited this theatre with a touring review company who performed on the stage in the 1960s. Shows were also put on in the town as part of a party. One these shows, in <strong>May</strong> 1932, hosted by the Mapperley Women’s Conservative Association was a party for their annual old folks tea. The star of this show turned out to be the youngest of the performers, 5yr old Margaret (baby) Hardstaff. To quote the report in the Nottingham Journal of 24th <strong>May</strong>, she performed with the confidence of a veteran, singing two songs, one of which had been written for her by her mother. Margaret was also described as a budding Nellie Wallace. Wallace was one of the well know comedians of the day. Other performers that day were Ada Dawson, Florrie Curran, Mr R Barker, who played the saxophone and Mr L Sims at the piano accompanying them all. There may have been no TV but this did not mean the people of Mapperley went without entertainment.
