Sports stars set sights

on ambitious goals

• By Chris Barclay and Mick Jensen

AN ULTRA-talented cyclist and

sailor reigned supreme on the roads of

Hokitika and off Napier’s coastline over

Anzac weekend and can now reset their

sporting goals for further afield.

Sumner’s Amelia Sykes, one of New

Zealand’s leading age group cyclists, has

set her sights on the track cycling junior

world championships in Tel Aviv, Israel,

in August while Will Leech (Charteris

Bay) is focused on mastering a new

sailing class after claiming back-to-back

national optimist titles.

Promising middle distance athlete

Kiera Hall wasn’t competing over the

long weekend, but the 17-year-old from

Mt Pleasant also has overseas travel on

her agenda after the national under-18

800m champion was recently selected

to represent New Zealand at meets in

Australia and South America.

The Modern Singhs

The true story of a marriage of two

cultures

by Abbey Singh and Money Singh

Abbey and Money Singh are better known as The Modern

Singhs, Kiwi social media celebrities with a rich and tangled love

story to tell.

Shared through the eyes of this inspiring duo, The Modern Singhs

reveals their experiences as migrants to New Zealand as they struggled to find footing

in new surroundings. They describe how they met and pursued a relationship that was

forbidden by Money’s culture, where he felt he had to choose between his family and the

love of his life. The couple opens up about the difficult birth of their son, their journeys

with mental health, a complicated sense of home, and what it’s like to raise bilingual

children across three cultures.

The rest is history - or at least uploaded to YouTube, where Abbey and Money’s joyful

outlook and celebration of tradition unites 1.3 million viewers from all over the world,

encouraging others to embrace difference with open hearts.

Rowie’s pro-war, her sister Jo’s a protester. And they’re both in Vietnam. The compelling

new novel from the bestselling author of From the Ashes

In 1969, at the height of the Vietnam war, nurse Rowie Leonard is serving a 12-month

tour of duty. She supports the war and is committed to caring for wounded New Zealand

and Australian troops. After a few months, however, she realises that nothing at all about

the conflict is as clear-cut as she’d assumed.

Her younger sister, Jo, is the opposite - a student at Auckland University, a folk singer

and a fervent anti-war protestor. But when Jo falls for professional soldier Sam Apanui,

home on leave to visit his ill father, she finds herself torn between her feelings and her

convictions.

As the three of them grapple with love, loss, and the stresses and sorrows of war, each

will be forced to confront and question everything they believed.

A MT Pleasant Rd resident is

urging the city council to dig

a channel and drain along his

boundary to save his property

and six other houses from

flooding.

Wayne Rollinson has outlined

his frustrations to the Linwood-Central-Heathcote

Community

Board and is pushing for

solutions from the city council.

He told board members that

since November water had been

transitioning from the road,

through his neighbour’s property

and into the corner of his

property.

The flooding was both stormwater

and reticulation water and

he had dug a channel to get some

of it off his property.

He said the flooding at one

stage was ‘‘like leaving two taps

on full bore for three months’’.

His neighbour’s garden had

resembled a duck pond and he

couldn’t believe their house had

not moved or slipped off the

section.

Rollinson said the integrity of

a retaining wall on his property

was now fully compromised and

he had submitted a claim to his

insurer. The retaining wall and

the sleepers were not designed to

be wet for four or five months.

He said from December

through to February he had

warned various people at the city

council if something wasn’t done

to stop leaks from both reticulated

and stormwater then it could

Covid concerns scupper travel plans

Leech, the junior member of

A member of the Charteris Bay

Richness of rural childhood revisited

Le Bons Bay resident

John Stuart has

published a book about

his childhood in Little

River in the 1950s and

1960s. Gary Brittenden

casts his eye over it

IF YOU grew up in 1950s and

1960s rural New Zealand, you

don’t have to be told what a

different world it was back then.

John Stuart, one of Banks

Peninsula’s most well-known

and respected characters, grew

up in Little River and now lives

in Le Bons Bay. Having recently

retired at 75, John has put

together a collection of stories

that begin with his 1950s Little

River childhood and wind their

way through a rich and varied

life.

Stuart is not just a great storyteller

– he is also a very good

writer. The appeal of this book

does not just lie in the wonderful

adventures he had as a young

lad, but also in his writing,

which has a touch of magic about

it. There is a softness and simplicity

of style and a pervading

gentle humour that echoes Roald

Dahl’s Boy and Bill Bryson’s

stories of his youth in The Thunderbolt

Kid.

The first section of the book

takes us to the long-lost world of

John Stuart’s

book My

life and

other stories

recounts

growing

up in Little

River with

‘softness,

simplicity

and gentle

humour’.

a rural, post-war childhood. For

Stuart and his ‘cobbers’ (such a

1950s word) it was a time of innocence

and freedom. They lived

in a place where the imagination

ruled supreme. The adventures

they got up to will bring misty

eyes to those who shared this

time, and incredulity to those

who didn’t. Health and safety

officers, read at your peril!

After his school days Stuart

went to university, was conscripted

into the army, and

played rugby at a high level for

his beloved Banks Peninsula

club, of which he is now patron.

“During the 1972 season I

reached the pinnacle of my rugby

career. I was selected for trials for

the Canterbury country rugby

team.

“At the first lineout, I found

myself marking the fearsome All

Black Grizz Wyllie. This is great,

I thought. But as I attempted

to impose myself on him, he

stepped back and fetched me a

solid clout to the head.

“My enthusiasm waned for

quite some time.”

Stuart was also a very able

rower, gaining a couple of thirds

at the nationals and beating a few

Olympic rowers along the way.

His interests were not just

confined to the blood, sweat and

tears of the sports field. He also

trod the boards with the local

drama club, which led to being

offered a part in a movie that was

to be filmed in Akaroa.

“I was offered a speaking

part – that of a drunken sailor.

Perhaps it was considered a role I

had some experience with.

“Unfortunately, Actors Equity

objected to having a non-union

member playing the part and

I was replaced by pop star Ray

Wolf. That was the beginning

and end of my movie career.”

Stuart was a teacher in

Akaroa for many years and was

renowned for his storytelling

ability.

This was followed by a stint

with the Banks Peninsula

Conservation Trust, running

predator trap lines in the isolated

‘wild side’ of the peninsula.

The book, simply titled,

My life and other stories is

full of wonderful tales of

all these times, originally

handwritten in a notebook for

his grandchildren. A couple of

friends and neighbours had a

read and persuaded Stuart –

after some lively discussion – to

publish. This is a wonderful book

and deserves to be widely read.

• My life and other stories

is available in Akaroa at

Pot Pourri and the Akaroa

Museum, and the Little

River Gallery. Smith’s

bookshop in The Tannery

will also have copies.

Past the peak? Why now

is the time to boost

As borders open and restrictions on movements and activities

ease, it is more important now than ever to be up to date with

your COVID-19 vaccinations. Here, Dr Helen Skinner, ECC

Incident Controller with Canterbury DHB, shares why it is upping

the ante on its booster vaccination programme.

By now, we all know someone who has

succumbed to COVID-19. Perhaps you’ve had

COVID-19 yourself?

For the lucky few, some mild symptoms and a

bit of weariness might be all that is experienced.

But from what I've seen, more people are

suffering some pretty severe effects, many of

which are going on for weeks.

Fortunately, many of us were fully vaccinated

and boosted when the Omicron peak hit

Canterbury. I can’t state enough just what a

difference that has made. People who are at the

peak of their immunity respond much better to

the virus, and recover more quickly.

Right now, more than 90,000 people in

Canterbury are due for their booster. That’s

why we’re upping the ante this month and

reminding people of the importance of a booster

vaccination.

Winter is fast approaching, and with it, more

time inside - an even better environment for

spreading COVID-19. Add to this the likelihood

of a much more severe flu season that

we have seen for years, and the risk this

winter is high.

Getting boosted is the best way to

fight Omicron

After a while, your protection against the

COVID-19 virus starts to drop away. The booster

dose gives you the added protection you need

against Omicron. It increases your immunity

substantially and it reduces the chance of you

sharing it with friends and whānau if you do get

COVID-19.

If you are 18 or over, and it’s been three

months since your second vaccination, then

you’re due for your booster.

The great news recently is that 16 and 17 year

olds are now also eligible for boosters. Rangatahi

in this age group need to wait six months after

finishing their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Have you had COVID-19 already?

I’m often hearing from people asking whether,

having had the virus, they still need a booster.

Unfortunately, even if you’ve had COVID-19, you

can get it again. And, while you get some natural

immunity through having the virus, it doesn’t

last. So, boosters matter. You need to wait three

months since having COVID-19 though.

It’s heartening to see that most of Aotearoa

has now reached the peak of daily COVID-19

cases, but that doesn’t mean the risk has gone.

COVID-19 is going to be

around for a long time,

which is why now is the

time to protect yourself

and your whānau – and

the sooner, the better.

There are plenty

places you can get

your free booster. Find

it less likely you’ll get really

When do I need to

have my booster?

If you are 18 or

over and had your

second dose at least

3 months ago, it’s

time to get your free

booster vaccine.

I’ve had COVID-19.

Do I need to get

Treasures from the past:

Lyttelton War Memorial

THE ŌHINEHOU/Lyttelton

War Memorial may be the mostoften

moved cenotaph in the

country.

Originally called the Fallen

Soldiers Memorial, it was built

in 1925, when many similar

memorials were being erected

nationwide as New Zealanders

sought to pay respect to those

who had lost their lives in World

War 1.

The ‘Great War’ was sometimes

referred to as the ‘war to

end all wars’; a well-intentioned

idealistic phrase originally

coined by H G Wells. The slogan

came to have a tragic irony given

World War 1 sowed the seeds

for World War 2, which resulted

in the greatest loss of life of any

conflict in history.

The 7.9m-tall cenotaph was

designed by Reverend Canon

Coates, vicar of Holy Trinity

from 1891 to 1913. With a base of

Halswell bluestone and the main

body made of locally quarried

Rāpaki stone, it features six

Scotch granite panels bearing

the names of Lytteltonians who

lost their lives in war. The two

wreaths and crosses on the faces

of the structure were carved by

James Hood.

The memorial was officially

unveiled in front of a crowd of

about 2000 by Lord Jellicoe,

Governor General (formerly

British Admiral of the Fleet, who

commanded the Royal Navy

at the Battle of Jutland in May

1916).

The parade was led by the

Lyttelton Marine Band. In attendance

were Major General Sir

Andrew Russell (Commander

of the New Zealand Division on

the Western Front) and Minister

of Defence Sir Heaton Rhodes,

along with many other dignitaries.

Built at the intersection of

Oxford and London streets in

front of the Lyttelton Borough

Council building, the location

soon proved to be problematic

(the monolithic 1875 Lyttelton

Borough School, demolished in

1941, is also visible in the top left

of the picture). As motor vehicle

traffic increased in the late 1920s

and early 1930s, it became a

hazard and the decision was

taken to move the cenotaph to

the small park at the eastern end

of Simeon Quay.

The second photograph

shows a well-attended Anzac

Day parade in 1962 on Simeon

Quay, bathed in some welcome

sunshine.

Tucked away as it was here,

below the spur of the Bridle Path

ridge, there were issues – it was

mostly shady and caught the bitter

easterly and southerly winds.

As port activity and Lyttelton’s

population increased and Simeon

Quay saw more traffic, access

also became a problem, especially

parking for elderly visitors.

By the mid-1990s, attendance

was limited to just a few dozen

people each year.

The earthquakes of 2020 and

2011 caused significant damage

to the structure; it was protected

for several years before the opportunity

to relocate and repair

it became available with the

development of Albion Square

Hidden away from the world on a quiet and

peaceful rear section, yet mere minutes from the

thriving hub of Sumner beach, this gorgeous

four-bedroom, two-bathroom home presents

a premium prospect for family living in one of

the city's most sought after locations.

Downstairs, the home is intelligently

designed for living with a spacious open plan

galley style kitchen flowing through to an

adjoining dining room and separate living

area - both with doors opening to the

established and easy care gardens. With a gas

fireplace, the second lounge offers a good

separation of spaces and can be fully closed

off from the other rooms, creating privacy

and intelligent living.

Accommodation is comprised of a lightfilled

master bedroom downstairs with an

ensuite and three further spacious upstairs

bedrooms that share a family bathroom, and

an additional shower room. The rooms are

all expansive, one comes with a balcony, and

an exceptional prospect in a premier location,

and interest will be substantial. Early inspection

is recommended.

14 Bay Harbour News Wednesday April 27 2022

Peugeot offers EV buyer plenty of choice

ONE OF MY work colleagues

recently swung by my desk for a

chat.

Due to his recreational pursuits

he needs a four-wheel-drive

vehicle and we often talk about

what is in the market that would

suit his requirements.

However, this time the

conversation was somewhat

different, he said there was a

definite trend developing through

my columns and he pointed out

electric vehicles were making up

a substantial proportion of my

evaluations.

He is quite right, and that

prompted me to look through my

diary over the last six months.

Out of 25 evaluations, 16 of

them were fully electric vehicles,

hybrids or had some kind mild

hybrid technology.

I guess that’s no surprise,

manufacturers are diving head

first into battery power, buyers

are demanding it globally, and

many car makers have indicated

that within the next few decades

all of their models will be

electrified.

European brands, in particular,

have been very proactive in

building electric vehicles, and

French company Peugeot is one

of those that has got popular

models distributing globally. In

New Zealand the new 208 has

an EV option, and it was one

of those that made up the 14

evaluation cars I alluded to in my

introduction. Well, the e-208 is

joined by the e-2008, a new sport

utility vehicle that utilises much

the same driveline and design

cues, especially the interior.

It must be mentioned that the

e-2008 is joined by three internal

combustion engine variants, the

range starting at $34,990 and

ending at $46,990, the EV listing

at $71,990.

As mentioned, the e-2008

shares its front-wheel-drive

propulsion system with that of

the e-208, it has a 50kWh rating

with a motor power output of

100kW and 260Nm, the latter

available from just 300rpm,

providing immediate impetus

and solid feel of acceleration,

Peugeot claiming a standstill to

100km/h time of 9sec with a top

speed of 150km/h.

While those figures aren’t

electrifying, if you’ll pardon

the pun, they are in tune with

other EVs, and the e-2008 has

a substantial travelling distance

of 332km when fully charged to

low charge. If you are on the go

and need a boost from one of

the nationwide charging ports

then you get a zero to 80 per cent

charge in 30min. Otherwise,

there is a seven hour time to

recharge from your own wall box

at home or 28 hours on a threepin

plug with 10amp supply.

These are all similar figures to

the many other EVs I’ve driven,

and if you put that into context

FUNCTIONAL: Under the liftback rear, load space in the

e-2008 is generous.

PEUGEOT e-2008 GT: Plug-in electric sport utility vehicle that is based on the 208 platform.

such as when I have an EV in my

care, I constantly trickle charge it

from the wall socket in my garage

and that is easily enough to take

care of the daily commute as well

as a little bit of rural running in

the weekend. It must be said, I

need longish cables to do that,

extension cables, double plugs or

multi-boards are a definite no-no,

thankfully Peugeot have given

their cables good length.

On the road the e-2008 drives

silently, just like its smaller

stablemate, it is somewhat feisty

with that immediate surge of

acceleration, yet it also drives like

any other car at city speeds, it is

superbly smooth and requires no

special techniques to operate.

As mentioned, the interior

is just like that of its siblings, a

large number of toggle switches

combined with digital display

graphics to give the occupants a

vast choice of how they want to

travel in terms of comfort and

convenience.

In terms of specification, the

e-2008 wants for little – leather,

cloth and alcantara trim with

heated front seats, satellite

navigation, voice command,

Apple CarPlay and Android

Auto connectivity, proximity key

access, panoramic roof and radar

cruise control are all fitted.

In line with its competition

the e-2008 is priced affordably.

• Price – Peugeot e-2008

GT, $71,990

• Dimensions – Length,

4300mm; width, 1770mm;

height, 1530mm

• Configuration – Electric

motor, front-wheeldrive,

100kW, 260Nm,

automatic

• Performance –

0-100km/h, 9sec

Because it sits below the $80k

threshold it qualifies for the

Government’s clean car rebate of

$8625, which makes for a very

tempting price tag given what

you get as a vehicle.

Notably, it’s a very capable

family wagon, the SUV concept

far from jeopardised. At just 4.3m

it isn’t a big wagon, but it makes

good use of its proportions; take

the 434-litre load capacity for

example, that easily housed a

Kiddie-household supermarket

grocery purchase, and if you

need extra space the rear seats

fold to extend that capacity to

1467-litres.

If you haven’t driven a Peugeot

before, or haven’t for a few years,

then you’ll be delighted to know

that the chassis dynamics that have

made the company a legendary

force are incorporated into the

e-2008. It has one of best rides in

the SUV market, the suspension

is plush and cosseting, yet if you

feel the need to push quickly into

a corner or two then the handling

balance is one of complete control

and body stability.

There is no ride/handling

compromise at all, the two gel

neatly and as a consequence, the

driver and occupants feel at one

with the car, comfort is high yet

the e-2008 easily earns its GT

badge, it is a true touring car that

is very hard to find fault with.

I knew from the outset I was

going to like the e-2008, I’ve

been a slow convert to hybrids

and electric vehicles, but with

my time in the two 208s I knew

that with the direction Peugeot

are heading with their cars the

SUV would be a class act, and it

is. Don’t read me wrong, I still see

petrol engines as my preference,

but with the way the motor

vehicles are trending the choice

in the EV market will become

increasingly wider, and I’m sure

with economies of scale prices

will become more competitive

between the two.

Peugeot is giving Kiwis good

choice – hatchback or SUV, petrol

or electric, all are quality built,

and if you do choose an EV then

you’ll also have peace of mind,

the battery has an eight-year or

160,000km warranty, up to 70 per

cent of charge capacity.
