Peugeot offers EV buyer plenty of choice
ONE OF MY work colleagues
recently swung by my desk for a
chat.
Due to his recreational pursuits
he needs a four-wheel-drive
vehicle and we often talk about
what is in the market that would
suit his requirements.
However, this time the
conversation was somewhat
different, he said there was a
definite trend developing through
my columns and he pointed out
electric vehicles were making up
a substantial proportion of my
evaluations.
He is quite right, and that
prompted me to look through my
diary over the last six months.
Out of 25 evaluations, 16 of
them were fully electric vehicles,
hybrids or had some kind mild
hybrid technology.
I guess that’s no surprise,
manufacturers are diving head
first into battery power, buyers
are demanding it globally, and
many car makers have indicated
that within the next few decades
all of their models will be
electrified.
European brands, in particular,
have been very proactive in
building electric vehicles, and
French company Peugeot is one
of those that has got popular
models distributing globally. In
New Zealand the new 208 has
an EV option, and it was one
of those that made up the 14
evaluation cars I alluded to in my
introduction. Well, the e-208 is
joined by the e-2008, a new sport
utility vehicle that utilises much
the same driveline and design
cues, especially the interior.
It must be mentioned that the
e-2008 is joined by three internal
combustion engine variants, the
range starting at $34,990 and
ending at $46,990, the EV listing
at $71,990.
As mentioned, the e-2008
shares its front-wheel-drive
propulsion system with that of
the e-208, it has a 50kWh rating
with a motor power output of
100kW and 260Nm, the latter
available from just 300rpm,
providing immediate impetus
and solid feel of acceleration,
Peugeot claiming a standstill to
100km/h time of 9sec with a top
speed of 150km/h.
While those figures aren’t
electrifying, if you’ll pardon
the pun, they are in tune with
other EVs, and the e-2008 has
a substantial travelling distance
of 332km when fully charged to
low charge. If you are on the go
and need a boost from one of
the nationwide charging ports
then you get a zero to 80 per cent
charge in 30min. Otherwise,
there is a seven hour time to
recharge from your own wall box
at home or 28 hours on a threepin
plug with 10amp supply.
These are all similar figures to
the many other EVs I’ve driven,
and if you put that into context

such as when I have an EV in my
care, I constantly trickle charge it
from the wall socket in my garage
and that is easily enough to take
care of the daily commute as well
as a little bit of rural running in
the weekend. It must be said, I
need longish cables to do that,
extension cables, double plugs or
multi-boards are a definite no-no,
thankfully Peugeot have given
their cables good length.
On the road the e-2008 drives
silently, just like its smaller
stablemate, it is somewhat feisty
with that immediate surge of
acceleration, yet it also drives like
any other car at city speeds, it is
superbly smooth and requires no
special techniques to operate.
As mentioned, the interior
is just like that of its siblings, a
large number of toggle switches
combined with digital display
graphics to give the occupants a
vast choice of how they want to
travel in terms of comfort and
convenience.
In terms of specification, the
e-2008 wants for little – leather,
cloth and alcantara trim with
heated front seats, satellite
navigation, voice command,
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto connectivity, proximity key
access, panoramic roof and radar
cruise control are all fitted.
In line with its competition
the e-2008 is priced affordably.

Because it sits below the $80k
threshold it qualifies for the
Government’s clean car rebate of
$8625, which makes for a very
tempting price tag given what
you get as a vehicle.
Notably, it’s a very capable
family wagon, the SUV concept
far from jeopardised. At just 4.3m
it isn’t a big wagon, but it makes
good use of its proportions; take
the 434-litre load capacity for
example, that easily housed a
Kiddie-household supermarket
grocery purchase, and if you
need extra space the rear seats
fold to extend that capacity to
1467-litres.
If you haven’t driven a Peugeot
before, or haven’t for a few years,
then you’ll be delighted to know
that the chassis dynamics that have
made the company a legendary
force are incorporated into the
e-2008. It has one of best rides in
the SUV market, the suspension
is plush and cosseting, yet if you
feel the need to push quickly into
a corner or two then the handling
balance is one of complete control
and body stability.
There is no ride/handling
compromise at all, the two gel
neatly and as a consequence, the
driver and occupants feel at one
with the car, comfort is high yet
the e-2008 easily earns its GT
badge, it is a true touring car that
is very hard to find fault with.
I knew from the outset I was
going to like the e-2008, I’ve
been a slow convert to hybrids
and electric vehicles, but with
my time in the two 208s I knew
that with the direction Peugeot
are heading with their cars the
SUV would be a class act, and it
is. Don’t read me wrong, I still see
petrol engines as my preference,
but with the way the motor
vehicles are trending the choice
in the EV market will become
increasingly wider, and I’m sure
with economies of scale prices
will become more competitive
between the two.
Peugeot is giving Kiwis good
choice – hatchback or SUV, petrol
or electric, all are quality built,
and if you do choose an EV then
you’ll also have peace of mind,
the battery has an eight-year or
160,000km warranty, up to 70 per
cent of charge capacity.
