We hear the phrase all the time... but what is food security?
Food security is commonly associated with
hunger and the inability of an individual or
family to access enough food for their needs.
More broadly, food security is about the degree
of control we have in the present and in
the long term over the food we need to feed
ourselves, our families and our communities.
The measure of our or any community’s compassion
and health can be found in how well
we care for our disadvantaged members.
The Central Kootenay is fortunate to have many
generous, dedicated and creative service providers
who ensure food is available for those
who need it in our communities. Check out the
listing of Emergency Food Services so you know
where to go should you have need, and you
know who would benefit from food and money
donations if you have excess.
The Farm & Food Directory is one of several projects helping
to make our food systems more resilient and strengthen the
regional food economy.
