SQUASH
I am trying to spend more time in Hong Kong now, though. After some
time training in America (and the UK) I have now made Hong Kong my
base again. Also whenever possible, I arrange my schedule to let me
come back home between events if only for a few days.
Family is my top priority. Sometimes it is hard to strike a balance with
professional squash but that’s life – we have to accept the challenge and
work it out.
MK: Would you encourage your daughters to become professional
squash players?
Max: No I won’t actively encourage my daughters to become
professional squash players. I chose squash as my career because it
was something I wanted to do. Squash for me is part of my life, but not
them. They have a right to choose for themselves.
I will encourage them to do what they love, but once they choose, I hope
I can support and motivate them to face all the challenges.
MK: What are you favourite squash venues around the world
and why?
Max: The glass court in Grand Central Station, New York, venue for The
Tournament of Champions is one of my favourite squash venues. It is
amazing! Lots of people come through the station every day having the
chance to see what squash is about and the crowd and atmosphere on
court are awesome!
MK: Unbeaten in Div. 1 this year, have you enjoyed your first year
playing for HKFC?
Max: I have really enjoyed playing for HKFC this year, especially at the
Club with home support!
As was my experience playing national league in UK, it is fun to watch
and play in a Club setting because enthusiastic members and the public
come and watch and really appreciate the squash. I really like it!
MK: What can Hong Kong Football Club (and other Clubs) do to
further support elite squash players in Hong Kong?
Max: As professional players, we love to play matches and tournaments
in front of our home crowd.
The HKFC PSA 25 tournament has been great for the sport in Hong
Kong as it has given another platform for Hong Kong’s elite squash
players to compete against international competitors and gather valuable
ranking points.
If HKFC can set up more international tournaments (Professional and
Junior) it will be great for local players to get more experience and move
up the rankings - while providing excellent entertainment for squash fans
in Hong Kong at the same time!
MK: What are your “top 3 technical tips” for aspiring club players to
improve their game?
Max:
1st: Open racquet face.
2nd: Don’t hit hard all the time but make full use of the height of court
3rd: Hit the ball with body weight forward.
MK: Thanks a lot Max. Good luck in the upcoming tournaments and
we look forward to seeing you on-court at the Club soon!
