The Thoughts of the Chairman
Dear Members,
John J Shanahan,
Chairman
We had another successful HKFC Citi Soccer
Sevens last month, with some top level
international matches being played and
world-famous stars from past and present interacting
with the spectators in the Infield. We hosted the Asian
Rugby Championship match between Hong Kong
and Malaysia on 26th May, and we will also be
playing host to the Hong Kong versus South Korea
match in that competition on the 2nd June. So,
come down and enjoy some first-class rugby action
on the day(s).
On the non-sporting front, you will see that more
signage and artwork has gone up on the Second
Floor. Remedial work is also being undertaken by
the Contractor to sort out a number of defects, such
as water seepage at the ceiling of the Chairman’s
Bar. I should flag here that the Back of House Staff,
in particular the Chef’s Brigade, have been working
diligently to ensure that everything is up to standard.
However, as with many other places in Hong Kong at
the moment, we are suffering from a citywide shortage
of Food and Beverage Staff. We are, at the time of
writing, thirteen chefs short of establishment. The
old adage that a duck seems to be gliding along on
the water, but underneath is paddling away like mad,
seems to be an appropriate analogy. We are actively
looking to recruit more Chefs, but please have some
patience if your order is not being processed as fast
as you would like.
The General Committee Working Group dealing with
the Government proposals on Private Recreational
Leases, are also putting together our submission
to the Government appointed Task Force on Land
Supply. The focus of these submissions will be
different, and the Working Group is putting together
vital information to support our arguments concerning
our premises, alongside a public relations company
that we have engaged to help us present our case
in a targeted manner. I will keep you all informed of
progress as time goes on.
From the Desk of Mark Pawley
Mark Pawley,
General Manager
At the time of writing we are basking in 35 o C
of sunshine. Whilst there are no rain clouds
around at the moment, it is worthwhile
reminding you all of the Typhoon and Black
Rainstorm Warning for the Club which is outlined
below.
On the sporting front, as the Chairman has noted the
HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens went extremely well with
Newcastle United the eventual winners of the Cup
competition. The tournament was a “tad” on
the hot side throughout but this didn’t seem to
diminish the quality of play from the top teams.
Well done to all those who were involved in the
organisation and running of what was a really strong
tournament.
With the summer heat definitely upon us and use
of the Swimming Pool Complex no doubt high on
many Members agenda’s please note the Pool Safety
Guidelines and Bye-laws on the opposite page as well
as the “Oh Poop” guidelines. Re the latter we have
to close the pool, for cleaning, if there is any poop
in it, so, please do look to ensure non-potty trained
children are wearing swim nappies or disposable
nappies at all times at the Swimming Pool Complex.
On the food and beverage front there will, no doubt,
be a few of you who will be very happy with the
return of the Wine Carousel to the Chairman’s
Bar. So, now we have the Carvery at lunch time,
the Afternoon Set Tea and the Wine Carousel from
6.30pm to 10.30pm in the evening!
In the Sportsman’s Bar in June “Live” tennis will be
on screen. First up we have the French Open from
Sunday 27th May through Sunday 10th June and
then from the 2nd July through to Sunday 15th
July we have Wimbledon. Running along with these
two Grand Slam tournaments we will be looking to
show the FIFA Would Cup which “Kicks-off” on
Thursday 14th June and finishes with the Final on
Sunday 15th July.
And, don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday 17th
June and the June Wine Dinner promotion “A
Journey through the flavours of Apulia” with free
flow Veuve Clicquot in the Restaurant on Friday
22nd June.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!
Mark Pawley,
General Manager
Squash News
Max at the Windy City Open in the US
An Interview with Max Lee
HKFC Squash Player and World Number 20
The HKFC Squash Section is lucky enough to have Hong Kong’s
number one squash player Max Lee representing them in the
HK league Division 1. Max is currently world ranked number 20 and
is a player on the PSA world tour. Max is Hong Kong’s highest ever
world ranked men’s player reaching number 12 in December 2015.
Max has won 13 PSA tour ranking events. This season he has won
the Canada open as well as the Pittsburgh Open and has played in
world championship events in England and Hong Kong. When he is
not travelling on tour he can be seen playing at the Club on Thursday
nights when our Division 1 team are at home. Recently Malcolm Kerr
interviewed Max about what it’s like to be one of the world’s best
squash players.
MK: How did you come to take up squash and where did you start?
Max: I first picked up a squash racquet 20 years ago because my mum
started learning squash and she taught me how to hold the squash
racquet to start. My first squash lesson was under Hong Kong’s junior
squash programme.
MK: When did you realise that you could be good enough to
turn pro?
Max: When I first had the opportunity to play an overseas junior
tournament and HK open qualification I dreamt of being one of the best
ones in the world. When I had the chance to turn pro, I could not resist! I
know I can still get better and playing professionally lets me train full-time
to improve all the time.
really taught me to believe myself and Peter Genever (in London), who
taught me how to be a thinker on court.
Several players have been great role models to learn from including
Peter Nicol, Jonathon Power, David Palmer, Amr Shabana, and
Thierry Lincou.
MK: What are your greatest achievements in squash so far?
Max: World Team and Asian Games Bronze medals and the Asian
Championship Gold have been my best results representing Hong Kong.
But my greatest personal achievement so far was probably reaching the
semi-final of the 2016 Hong Kong Open. It showed players from Hong
Kong can compete with the best in the major World Series tournaments.
Beating the top players in tournaments is always my dream and my
ambition, although I lost in the Semi, it was a great feeling to perform
well in my home event.
MK: What are your goals this season?
Max: I hope to perform well in the last two World Series events before
the summer, the El Gouna Open (Egypt) and the British Open.
My goal, as ever, is to beat top ranked players. To play consistently well
with a clear, positive mind-set on court, while adapting to the court and
opponent, is always difficult. I hope I can do all this with my smile on
court too!
After these two tournaments, my third Asian Games will be in August. I
hope I am injury free to play and successfully defend my title for Hong
Kong too.
MK: Which players have inspired you most as you started squash
and today?
Max: I think all the coaches and senior players since I was young
inspired me to be tough on court, even if I need to run triple the distance
of my opponent to win each point. But honestly, the two coaches that
motivated me most were Tony (Choi, former HK National Coach) who
MK: How do you balance family life with training and travel for
tour events?
Max: I have two daughters, who are two and half, and 6 months old. At
this stage, as you can imagine, it is very tough for my wife as one versus
SQUASH
I am trying to spend more time in Hong Kong now, though. After some
time training in America (and the UK) I have now made Hong Kong my
base again. Also whenever possible, I arrange my schedule to let me
come back home between events if only for a few days.
Family is my top priority. Sometimes it is hard to strike a balance with
professional squash but that’s life – we have to accept the challenge and
work it out.
MK: Would you encourage your daughters to become professional
squash players?
Max: No I won’t actively encourage my daughters to become
professional squash players. I chose squash as my career because it
was something I wanted to do. Squash for me is part of my life, but not
them. They have a right to choose for themselves.
I will encourage them to do what they love, but once they choose, I hope
I can support and motivate them to face all the challenges.
MK: What are you favourite squash venues around the world
and why?
Max: The glass court in Grand Central Station, New York, venue for The
Tournament of Champions is one of my favourite squash venues. It is
amazing! Lots of people come through the station every day having the
chance to see what squash is about and the crowd and atmosphere on
court are awesome!
MK: Unbeaten in Div. 1 this year, have you enjoyed your first year
playing for HKFC?
Max: I have really enjoyed playing for HKFC this year, especially at the
Club with home support!
As was my experience playing national league in UK, it is fun to watch
and play in a Club setting because enthusiastic members and the public
come and watch and really appreciate the squash. I really like it!
Max Playing Division one at the Club.
MK: What can Hong Kong Football Club (and other Clubs) do to
further support elite squash players in Hong Kong?
Max: As professional players, we love to play matches and tournaments
in front of our home crowd.
The HKFC PSA 25 tournament has been great for the sport in Hong
Kong as it has given another platform for Hong Kong’s elite squash
players to compete against international competitors and gather valuable
ranking points.
If HKFC can set up more international tournaments (Professional and
Junior) it will be great for local players to get more experience and move
up the rankings - while providing excellent entertainment for squash fans
in Hong Kong at the same time!
MK: What are your “top 3 technical tips” for aspiring club players to
improve their game?
Max:
1st: Open racquet face.
2nd: Don’t hit hard all the time but make full use of the height of court
3rd: Hit the ball with body weight forward.
MK: Thanks a lot Max. Good luck in the upcoming tournaments and
we look forward to seeing you on-court at the Club soon!
SQUASH
HKFC Squash Beat HKCC Squash
at their own game
30 overs with Keith top scoring with 63 not out
and Raj getting 59.
After a three year hiatus the Squash
Sections of the HKFC and HKCC played
each other at cricket recently. HKFC were
victorious the last time the two teams played
but the previous two meetings prior to that
had been won by the HKCC team. This meant
that there was a lot to play for and it would be
interesting to see how the teams had fared in
strengthening their cricket prowess over the
last few years.
On a warm but cloudy day with hints of drizzle,
HKFC won the toss and decided to bat first
the idea being to make a decent total that
could be defended. With the batting order
being discussed by the senior players it was
decided that a mix of the perceived big hitters
would be interspersed with the more traditional
cricketer. The plan worked very well from
the start with openers Raj and Rob Jones
getting the scoreboard ticking at a very fast
rate. There were sixes and fours hit well to all
places around the ground which made both
players get to 30 and have to retire. With this
great platform in place, Keith Frith carried on
the batting with his technical skill also ensuring
he would get to 30 and retire. At the other
end Chairman Dave Cross started strongly
but when he tried a clip off the legs which was
called out for what he described as a dubious
LBW his innings was over. More strength in
the batting ensued with squash team captain
Julian Tanner playing the shot of the day which
was a very nice front foot defensive for 0 also
getting to 30 with Graham Mountford doing the
same. Steve Gollop made a very nice 4 before
he got caught and John Thompson kept
the run rate moving (which surprised some)
to also make it to 30 and retiring. With a host
of players then being able to come back in a
gigantic score of 319 for 4 was recorded in just
With the great total made it was always going
to be difficult for HKCC to keep up the run
rate and it allowed HKFC to have an attacking
field. Julian Tanner and Keith Frith opened the
bowling well keeping it very tight, with Julian
getting the early wicket of coach Chad Sunde
with an excellent catch by wicket keeper Dave
Cross, who then continued to keep wicket all
afternoon like a man possessed using a style
very much like his squash which had limited
footwork but somehow he managed to get to
the ball. The bowlers rotated well with Graham
Mountford getting two wickets, Steve Gollop
bowling very tight and Rob Jones bowling the
ball of the day to get out another danger man
Michael Chin. Chris Evans for HKCC arrived
late in the day to get some big sixes for HKCC
which didn’t help the bowling figures of John
Thompson or Raj at the end of the innings
which helped the HKCC team get 189 for 9.
This meant that HKFC has won the game for
the second time in a row by 130 runs.
It was then time for some great food and wellearned
beer from the hosts at HKCC. There is
now talk of a rematch but this time the game
will be football!!
Message from Mini-Rugby Chairman
The season is winding down as I write this report, and by the time you read this we
will have had the Club’s first tour to the TRC Junior Cup Tournament, U6 to U10 to
participating, with U11 playing a number of “friendlies” around that tournament.
The 2017 / 2018 training season will have ended on Sunday 13th May. What will we do with
Sunday mornings ……
U12 Girls
On a very hot Saturday we had fourteen girls
play in the SKS tournament. With numbers
being short the girls had lots of rugby with many
playing back to back games. Some great wins
were achieved in pool play with the exception
of losses to Sandy Bay and Sai Kung. Both
teams made it to their respective Cup semifinals
- both against arch rivals Sandy Bay.
However with the heat and injuries taking their
toll numbers were down to eleven. The girls
were asked if they wanted to forfeit one of the
games. Of course they were not going to have
this and despite losing both semis, they went
on to win hard fought plate finals, including the
U12G
first team final in extra time. This tournament
brought out some of the best performances
of the year for a number of players – excellent
finish to the season! Particular mention goes out
to Georgie Smith and Lauren Cheung who
stepped up in leading the first team in tough
matches, and to Lara Mahbubani for scoring a
brace of tries for the second team.
Brent Yorke
U10G & U9G Girls - SKS AGT
A tightly packed rugby month meant Easter
weekend was also the time for the All Girls
Tournament. Resources were stretched thin,
with thirteen girls across two teams, but the girls
were hopping with excitement in the midst of
the Bunny-filled weekend.
First up were the Northerners from Sai Kung.
Kelli and Lea were keen for more games, and
jumped right into the fray, with Kelli sniping
around the wings, and Lea punching up through
the guts. Some great support play saw HKFC
A up by a few tries in the end.
DB Pirates were a different matter, and despite
the tireless tackling from Lucy, we were unable
to stem the tide. However, this did not get us
down, and strong runs from Laine, support play
from Vincy, and supremely aggressive play from
Sophie, saw us take down Flying Kuris.
The University students were the last pool
match, and it was a tight affair that see-sawed
all the way. Battling through injury, Clare
provided her rugby nous to steer the ship, while
Karina continued to probe defences with her
charging runs eventually drawing level for a well
contested effort.
The plate final had us again face the Kukris, and
we would not disappoint. Continuing her form
from all day, Natasha almost single-handedly
out-rucked the opposition, smashed through
defences, and took down the ball carriers. Great
day and we took home some silverware. Brilliant
effort by all.
Macau Bats Tournament
U10s
On Saturday 14th April, HKFC U10’s took two
teams to Macau for the Macau Bats Mini Rugby
Festival. With four games each to be played on
a hot and humid afternoon it’s was going to be
hard work.
The teams were raring to go with players
inspired by the sevens the weekend before. Up
first were HKFC 2, they were playing Stingrays
followed by Valley, USRC Tigers and DB
Pirates. They played really well coming away
with 2 wins. HKFC 1 team played Macau Bats,
Donngguan Bulldogs, Flying Kukris and Sandy
Bay and finished undefeated.
Both teams put in a tremendous amount of
work and effort, passing the ball well and
creating lots of opportunities to score tries.
Thank you Macau Bats for putting on a great
festival, everyone came away having had a
enjoyable day playing great rugby.
HKFC 1
Under 7
The HKFC U7s fielded a ‘Barbarians’ team (i.e.
players from across our four regular training
groups) in the Macau tournament.
We had a fantastic turn-out (twelve players for
one squad), and - in order to give our squad
as much rugby as possible – we, perhaps
over-generously gifted our own U8s with two
of our strongest players - Simon Danjoux and
Lawrence Jones.
The remaining U7 squad performed very well
– we remained unbeaten throughout the day,
finishing 2nd in our group as a result of a very
hotly-contested draw with Valley (1-1), which
included a disallowed try for FC after Ante
Galic had stormed over the line and forgot,
momentarily, that we were playing touch rugby
not American Football in the end zone!! So with
wins over Macau Bats, and DEA Tigers, we
came 2nd in our group; in the 3rd/ 4th place
play off, we enjoyed a ‘come from behind’ win
against Sandy Bay – a great way to end the
tournament and our regular season.
Well done to all the players who really ‘gelled’
during the day. Special mentions to Naomi
Chan, Liam Norman, Gus Grewcock, Rob
Ramsey and James Raper who will be
representing the U7s at Tanglin in Singapore,
and who all responded well to the knock out
competition! Let’s hope we can end a place or
two higher in Singapore!
U6
Duncan Grewcock
A group of nine very excited five-year-olds
toured to Macau to participate in their first
overseas tournament on the 14th April.
The squad (carefully selected by Head Coach,
Mark Tsui) comprised: Dylan Akandu, George
Brock, Paddy Galvin, Sebastian Lai, Lachlan
McGowan, Max Randall, Ben Roboredo,
Riku Shiotani, and Declan Tsui.
The team was drawn in Group B, with HKU
Sandy Bay, Flying Kukris and, the hosts,
Macau Bats. Coach Tsui, learning from Sir
Clive Woodward’s strategy of timed use of
replacements, divided the team into three
groups of three with a view to rotating them at
halftime.
First match a tight 2-0 to Club, defeating HKU.
Then up was Flying Kukris; the team, gaining
confidence, won 3-0. Final group game was
another impressive 3-0 against Macau Bats. So
being undefeated, and not having conceded a
try, the team progressed to the Cup Final.
If there is going to be a Cup Final then being
U6
U6
U6
against Valley (who won Group A) was fate.
The team took to the field under the on-pitch
coaching of Mark “I’ll do this” Tsui. Group A
were told “play your hearts out as Group C
will replace you at half time”. The match was
deadlocked until a heartbreaking Valley try. With
little time on the clock, Valley committed an
infringement and a penalty was awarded with
consequent turnover. The boys did not need to
be asked twice: running straight up the pitch to
score. At 1-1 the klaxon sounded for full time; in
another pounding attack the ball went
over the line. Club won 2-1: U6 Cup won “job
done, tick”.
Medals having been presented there was a
celebratory lunch at Fernando’s on Coloane.
On the ferry home the boys belted out a terrible
rendition of Queen’s anthem: “We Are The
Champions”. We now know that U6 play better
rugby than sing …..
Thanks to our on pitch coaches of Andy “Lordy
it’s hot” Randall, Jose “I’ve been here for days”
Roboredo and Mark “I’ll do this” Tsui, who
guided U6 to their first tournament Cup.
Albion End of Season Report
The preseason saw a new manager,
Monty, at the helm and also the transfer
of three key players from Albion to the
first team. Nevertheless, Albion made a strong
start to the season picking up twelve points
from the first five games with the strike force
of Maton and McMillan causing havoc in
opposition defences.
However, defeats to both Club sides meant
that Albion were slightly off the pace by
Christmas. The inevitable transfer of McMillan
to the first team was somewhat countered
by the signing of Poon Junior from KCC and
Albion continued with their attacking brand of
football under Montgomery in the New Year.
This contributed to a notable double over
German All Stars and two hard fought battles
against cup finalists Spartans.
Worth and captain Kells did a great job at
marshalling the midfield throughout the season
When it came to
the final game
of the season
Albion needed to
beat Wanderers
to secure a
deserved second
place. With
veteran centre backs Pugh, in his hundredth
game, and Spanos inspiring the side there was
no way through for the Wanderers attacking
line. Goals from the mercurial Maton, who set
a first division record of twenty-eight goals for
the season, and a masterful volley from Worth,
Albion secured a derby victory and the points
they needed to finish second.
Overall, Albion can take many positives, such
as setting a new league record for goals
scored, from a somewhat transitional season.
They should therefore be well placed to mount
a serious assault on the title in the 2018/19
campaign!
SOCCER
Wanderers End of Season Report
Wanderers- 2017/2018
Yau Yee League
Champions- Oh but
what could have been….
The Wanderers kicked off their
2017/2018 campaign looking as
strong as ever. We said goodbye
to loyal servants Turbo and
Freddie who secured silverware
themselves in their debut season
for the 1s. We did welcome
a number of new players,
including:
Anthony- Property Tycoon-
Jurenko; James- Bag Lady-
Keeble; Chris- Cleanish Sheets-
Wong; Joel- Baby- Anscomb
(who we bid farewell after being
offered a contract in Tasmania somewhere)
and royalty from Germany in the form of a true
‘blue blood’: Prinz Zu Schleswig-Holstein-
S-G Julian. Old stalwarts, UniLAD Seb; Sassy
Scoop, Tiramasu Riley, Pyscho Ricky and
Cunning linguist Cammy added the experience
along with yours truly to skipper the side after a
two year sabbatical with the first team.
The season kicked off with a comfortable 4-0
win over Boca which was the first of 5 wins
without conceding a goal. We were looking
strong. The first time we conceded was at
Kings Park to Azurri, where we went 1-0 down
(The free header from a corner was celebrated
like they’d won the league). Was this a sign that
the teams in the league were after our scalp?
Absolutely. We began to look like as the Gaffucino
would say, a proper outfit. Our next six
weeks saw us dispatch old foes GAS and both
club teams, scoring 11 goals without reply…
The team sensed there was something special
about this group of players.
The Christmas break saw us top of the table
with maximum points having conceded just one
goal and still in the Cup. Confidence was sky
high- could we be the immortals, invincibles,
the record breakers? A secret santa gift of a
stool for Martin- Clean Sheets- Yu summed up
our confidence. What could go wrong?
That three week break absolutely killed us. As
a group we managed to put on a cumulative
50kgs and oh did the niggly injuries start to
pile up.
Our resolute defence, once seemingly
impenetrable started to leak goals. Still with a
100% record we went 2-0 down to the GAS,
surely we’d bounce back? Bounce back we did
to win 3-2 with a last minute header from one of
the players of the season, Brend- the Salmon-
Beni. But poor performances and the manner
in which we were winning games lacked the
quality of an immortal side, would this catch up
with us?
Our first of 3 league defeats came at the hands
of Spartans. Fielding a back 3 made up of two
horses that should be made into glue by that
point (Campo and yours truly) and Jay – the
Wardrobe- Green who decided to compete
in a deadlift cross fit competition that morning.
We were run ragged and found ourselves 3-0
down at half time. We inevitably mounted our
comeback to 3-2 and the belief was there
that we’d do it again… Cue the Wardrobe and
TOTM for that day, Dan Yee. Like two protons
in the Hydron Collider, at full pelt smashed into
each other presenting the Spartans a freebie at
goal. In the end, Spartans were worthy winners
over their generous opposition that day. Not for
the last time that season.
The immortal status may have been lost, but
we were still in the cup. We had beaten the
Hun in the quarter finals, and were presented
with a tricky away tie against the
Spartans in the semis. An ugly
game of football at King’s Park
saw the VAR come into play on
more than one occasion. The
VAR judged the Spartans first
goal over the line, to the surprise
of the Wanderers, the referee
and most notably, the Spartans.
After 80 mins, we would go
into extra time looking to nick
a goal to avoid PKs. However,
with a few mins remaining in ET
the Spartans were awarded a
penalty kick when Martin- Clean
Sheets- Yu tackled the Spartans
striker on the edge of the box.
The Spartans would go on to win
the tie 3-1. Our ego’s wounded
not by the manner of the defeat, but another
subpar performance. In hindsight, we may have
swerved a bullet as the Colts deservedly won
the final with one of the best performances in
Yau Yee league football seen at the Club. Well
done Colts.
We ended the season as our Seppo cousins
would say, 19 and 3. The other two defeats
coming at the hands of the ever impressive and
energetic Colts and our oldest frenemies- the
Albion, a generous Club team indeed we are.
Notable awards/ achievements/ thanks
COLTS End of Season Report
I
am writing this in the immediate aftermath of
watching the Colts successfully defend the
Yau Yee Cup, which we had already won last
season. In an almost perfect performance we
beat a very strong Spartans team 4-0 and in
truth it could easily have been double. Spartans
had beaten both Wanderers and Albion en-route
to the final and were favoured to win.
It wasn’t just that we scored four excellent goals
but the Colts completely controlled possession
and Spartans never had a clear chance to
score. Goals from a Tim Chan header, a
superbly taken Alex JoJo goal and then two
goals from our excellent 14 year old prospect
Liam Doyle, the second one of the deftest
headers you will ever see.
I should perhaps point out that this is the 5th
time the Colts have won the Cup in the last
eleven years , which is a very fine achievement
and unequalled in recent times in the Yau Yee
League.
The cup final result came after a series of
superb performances where we beat Albion 3-0,
beat champions Wanderers 4-2 in one of the
best games ever seen at this level at HKFC plus
a 4-0 win over Azzurri and a final 5-1 victory
over Squadron where we played so many young
and exciting new prospects who will help form
the nucleus of next season’s squad.
Colts ended up third for the second year
running in the league and credit to both Albion
and champions Wanderers who showed
greater consistency than ourselves over the
whole season, but the coaching staff take
great pride in watching the young lads mature
during the season…… and we are regularly
told how the Colts play the best football in the
league because they are taught the “right way
to play”. Other team managers including the
Spartans and Germans coaching staff felt this
is the best Colts team they have seen in the last
eight years….. and when you look at the large
number of players who are 16 or under in the
squad it promises to be a good generation for
future Club teams.
There are so many players who deserve
mention but we must mention the captain
Jack Gallagher and vice captain Tim Chan,
who have been inspirational to the whole team
throughout the season.
We look forward to seeing these young lads
progress in their footballing careers.
U9s shine in HKJFL Tournament
Saturday April 14th
After being runners up twice before, the U9’s 1st team claimed their division title to win the
plate and claim promotion to the Premier league for next season. With victories against Tai
Tam Tigers, Brazilian Soccer School and APSS, the players showed great fighting spirit
on a very hot day. HKFC U9’s had a new keeper and Enzo Levaire provided some magnificent
saves under pressure, Matthew Suntay, showed great tackle timing at the back - with the
defence only conceding 1 goal throughout the whole tournament. Joshua Baker showed great
control and distribution talent in central midfield to help connect the play. With strong wing work
and numerous assists from Zack Hamilton-Dick, Archie Jarman and Daniel Watts we had
great goals from Hogan Yeung, and Healey Price. Players player was Hogan Yeung. HKFC U9’s
scored a total of 18 goals over the 5 games. Well done HKFC U9’s a great win!!
Hockey News
Message from the Men’s Captain
By the time of reading the season will be over but I am writing on the
eve of the cup runs – so best of luck to all teams in their respective
competitions. A special mention goes to the H team for securing a
famous win against KCC D in their first cup fixture. End of Season reports
from each team captain will be in next month’s issue which I encourage
you to read.
A couple of notable departures this month, firstly, “Classic” Michael
Gee who left for the UK after two years playing with the A team
and coaching at the Club. Known for his questionable haircuts and
unorthodox coaching style (which allegedly included giving out half-time
player ratings), Michael was very involved across the Men’s, Women’s
and Junior’s sections and I’d like to thank him for all his hard work and
enthusiasm.
“Wild” Willy Earl Holderness is also heading home after completing his
one year tenure as an overseas coach and playing for the A team. As well
as being a good hockey player, Will also has an excellent singing voice – if
you haven’t heard it then do
ask, he’s usually more than
happy to oblige. I’d like to
thank Will for all he’s brought
to all facets of the Section in
such a short space of time.
We are very sorry to see them
both leave. Their energy and
passion for all aspects of the
Section will be missed both
on and off the pitch. I thank
you both very much and hope
to see you back in Hong Kong
soon.
The 2017/18 Season:
The first of (hopefully) many seasons for a new captain is always the
hardest, or so I was told. With three early defeats, an early retirement
announcement by Oscar Poelmann (via email) and an oversubscribed
team, trying to work out the winning formation in our run up to Christmas
was a tough one. Sitting uncomfortably in the middle of the table we
knew that we couldn’t afford to slip up again. Following a bruising 2-1
defeat to the Dutch, we began to find our groove and, with a bit of
consistency finally creeping in, Sam Turvey announced his sudden and
early departure from Hong Kong. This had the potential to throw the
team, however what ensued was an undefeated run of league games
(17) that continues to this day. During this winning streak we were able to
strike swift sweet revenge against the Dutch upon their return to hallowed
ground; they witnessed us hit 3 goals unanswered. Delicious. In addition,
our performance to beat the eventual league winners, Aquila C, 3-1 shall
forever be remembered as one of the best team performances we put in
all season. However, due to the strength and form of other teams in the
league we could only muster a 3rd place finish, even with stats of 16-3-3.
Safe to say we’re all looking forward to continuing the run of form, surely it
can only get easier from here..?
Highlight of the Season:
They say fortune favours the brave and the Cup Draw presented us
with the chance to prove to ourselves that we are ready and should be
playing Division 3 hockey next season. The match against HKFC F’s was
one that will come back to haunt us all for some time. Having gone 1-0
up, 1-1 and then 2-1 up, aided by Lyle William’s yellow card from the
dugout, the game was resting uncomfortably on a knife-edge. A lack of
concentration for only a minute allowed the Fs to draw level in the dying
minutes, taking the game to extra time and with that the defeat of the
Gs. The Gs stumbled only at the last quarter, however not all was lost.
As Maximus once said, the Gs had won the crowd, and with that their
freedom to hang up their sticks (at least until the summer).
Players Player and Player of the Season:
Daniel Martin, Defensive Midfielder. Outstanding strength, stamina and
timing. Temperament and availability for social events to be improved.
Best of luck back in New Zealand.
Social Events:
The various socials throughout the year have ensured that we have
celebrated our wins well. Highlights include (and are limited to):
Oktoberfest, Christmas Ball, Bottomless Brunch and Ashley’s gaff in
Stanley.
Departures:
With a heavy heart, we bid farewell to Sam Turvey and Daniel Martin.
Two titans of the sport who bolstered the midfield and were ever
dependable, best of luck back in Blighty and New Zealand.
Men’s H Team –
A season of two halves
The Mighty H’s post-Xmas season has been much more rewarding
than our pre-Xmas win rate. After a Sportsman’s Bar crisis meeting,
it was identified that we needed a striker and a coach and had to tap the
Xmas transfer market pronto. A quick whip-round raised about $19.20
and we figured that would be enough for the quality we needed…
In quick succession we landed Clive “Hit Man” Miners to fire up our
forward line and Rory “Broken Leg” Davis as coach. We spent the
last 20 cents on midfield legend Vivek Kadam and, for the outrageous
price of a pint, Patrick Watt claimed he would put his flying career on
hold to get us through this challenging time. And then a strange thing
happened… we started winning. Clive was on fire, bagging a hat trick in
his 3rd game. Rory provided sage advice with gems like, “that’s the worst
game of hockey I’ve seen you play so far”, and the new midfield pair
gelled nicely with our youngsters Jamie Evans and Fraiser Giulianotti.
We did have our setbacks though, losing Chris Jones for the rest of the
season due to back injury caused while tripping over his stick, Joel Chu
only being able to turn out sporadically due to multiple injuries incurred
while tying his shoelaces, and us foolishly loaning Andy Kidd to the G’s
so they could win the league, which they duly blew, oh well…
However more heroic events were to come with the H’s winning their
first cup game in living memory. Performance’s like the one from MOM
Anthony “I’m now a defender” Brophy got us through to full time with
a draw. The game then went to penalties and after the 9th we finally
prevailed with some outrageous goalkeeping by Geoff “what a dive”
Riddell and Prakash “eagle eye” Kirpalani bagging two goals for us. The
bookies have us as odds on to get knocked out in the next round, but
what do they know? We are The Mighty H’s ….
Message from the Ladies’ Captain
It has been a big few weeks for the HKFC ladies, as the season wraps
up. The As and Bs finished their league campaigns, with the As
keeping a clean sheet in each of their matches in 2018 – quite some
achievement. They move on to their Holland Cup campaigns just as
the weather heats up nicely.
The highlight of the last month for me was the Cs v Ds Cup Final, held
at Kings Park on 28th April. Both squads were lighter on bodies than
usual – but it promised to be an exciting and feisty game nonetheless,
as Club derbies (and this one in particular) always are. With Ds
goalkeeper Xinyao Liu representing Hong Kong at the Youth Olympic
Games Qualifers in Bangkok, Annabel Baillie donned the pads to
stand in between the posts for the Ds – a daunting prospect when her
favoured position is outfield. Although she was not able to completely
see off the striking forces of Ida Wong and Anika De Blank who
slotted two goals away to give the Cs a 2-0 lead, I am told by many
sources that Annabel was absolutely outstanding and the Ds were
very lucky to have her! The Ds were not to be easily defeated, and
fought hard right until the end. Spectators were treated to an anxious
moment when youngster Anna Aiello bravely stepped up to take a
penalty stroke for the Ds, and showed tremendous composure and
poise to ensure it gave the Ds a goal back. Although the final score
finished 2-1 to the Cs (ensuring they secured the Triple this year
(the League, the Cup and the 5-a-side Tournament)), everyone did
themselves proud and all walked off the pitch with their heads held
high and their hands reaching out for some fizz!
We were very proud to see four of our youngsters
head off to Bangkok to take part in the Youth
Olympic Games Qualifiers – Brianne Laot (Cubs),
Isabel Li (Cubs), Xinyao Liu (Ds) and Chloe Sik
(Cs) (all under the watchful eyes of coach Arif
Ali (Men’s As and coach of Ladies’ As). It was a
very tough few days for them, up against China,
Malaysia, Japan and Chinese Taipei – a difficult
group indeed! They did themselves, HKFC and
Hong Kong very proud though – finishing 4th in their group, getting
goals past China, Malaysia and Japan and beating Chinese Taipei for
the first time at junior level. As coach Arif said, “The future looks very
bright!”. I know that it was an incredible experience for them, playing
against the top teams in Asia, and hopefully they will cherish the
memories and use what they have learned to build on their skills for
their teammates at HKFC and in the Hong Kong squad. Girls – all of
us at HKFC are very proud of you!
For those of you who have finished for the summer – you lucky ducks
– please enjoy some downtime! To the As and Bs – best of luck in the
Holland Cup.
See you on the pitch and in the bar soon.
Ladies’ G Team
Ladies’ G team at training
It was a chilly Thursday evening. The full moon lit up the dusky sky as
it set the scene for an event that would define the fate of the G Team
forever. Hearts were racing and palms were sweaty as we watched
Lightning surpass Panther in a triumphant effort of potato sack racing.
But tenacious Panther was determined. In her final flight, she raced
her fiery feet in a hamster-like effort and whizzed past Lighting in a
titanic effort to seal the victory. Unfortunately, hamsters are no match
for Panthers and in a dramatic and drunken struggle both Lighting and
Panther crossed the finish line in an unsatisfying yet splendid draw.
After a year of magnificent yet civil coaching, the G Team – who probably
hold the record for most coaches to have ever coached a single team
– decided it was time to sus out our coaching talent and see who really
deserves the title of “best G-Team coach of all time”. Izzy O’Connor
and Rachel Whittaker were up for the gladiator challenge but, true to
Team dinner
G Team form, alcohol had to be involved. After 10 rounds of spinning
heads around hockey sticks, sprinting, dribbling, climbing and drinking,
our gladiator coaches crossed the finish line together and left us with
a very unsatisfying “awwww sweet”… With the rounds and rounds of
challenges, the Gs experienced the instant effect of heightened fitness
levels and advanced stick skills after a fun night of training.
This fabulous year of training led by our two brilliant coaches, Izzy and
Rachel from the A and B squads proved effective enough for the Gs to
survive the year in Division 3. With the Gs holding a top 3 spot during
the start of season, and the 8-0 win over Swire B in the Cup game, the
challenge to face higher division teams and to score more goals can now
be deemed: reasonably completed.
This year we bid farewell to our legend of a coach Izzy “the lighting
hamster” O’Connor, and a few of our beloved and long-time players
Isla Hughes, Ashley Man and Shaila Lambert. Isla has been captain
for two consecutive years and did a fantastic job in bringing the team
together. What more can we ask for from a captain who also brought
in her extraordinary musical talent by composing our Christmas musical
Nightmare before Christmas that is never to be forgotten? Ashley
“golden stick” Man, for a consecutive 7 years, fired legendary goals past
any and every goalie, laying a solid goal foundation in the Gs of fiery
flicks every time she’s in the D. Shaila has been playing for the Club since
1997, legendary in both defence and dance moves, her experience and
advice will surely be missed.
The Gs ended their season in a mild and mellow Indian curry night. True
to form, mellowness is never enough for these gals and the evening soon
developed into countless amount of shots and dance moves, and many
more get-togethers to carry on the celebrations. One of these nights
was coach Izzy’s farewell dinner in her all-time favourite Korean BBQ
restaurant – we already miss you coach Izzy! And yet the celebrations are
not done, as the Gs look forward to celebrating this year’s hockey season
with more bubbles, dancing and fun at the end-of-season social.
Ladies’ H Team (Cubs) – That’s a wrap!
As the Cubs’ first season comes to an
end, we are proud to say that we’ve been
unbeaten in our league all season. Winning
our debut season is something very special
for the team as it is the first year of playing
senior hockey for all of us. Looking back to the
beginning of the season, the Cubs have gone
from strength to strength and that wouldn’t
have happened if it weren’t for our team spirit
and the guidance from our amazing coaches.
Something definitely worth mentioning is that
this season four of our players, Brianne Laot,
Emily Mann, Isabel Li, and Jacqueline Chu
were selected to be a part of the Hong Kong
National Junior Squad. Brianne and Isabel
recently represented Hong Kong in the Asian
Youth Olympic Games Qualifiers in Bangkok.
The rest of the Cubs couldn’t be prouder.
Of course, winning the league means that
the Cubs will be promoted to Division 4 next
season, as well as seeing some of our older
players move up to play in different teams. The
Cubs were so close to advancing to the Bowl
semi-finals, but unfortunately lost to Ewis A in
the quarter-finals. Despite our loss, we went
on to win the 5-a-side tournament, the perfect
season finale.
As summer approaches, some of the Cubs will
be joining the highly anticipated annual youth
tour to Perth. On the other hand, some not
so exciting news, we are sad to bid farewell
to a few people this season. Grace Early,
Jojo Spooner, Lilly Mahn and of course our
wonderful coach Will Holderness as they
depart from the Hockey Section. The Cubs wish
them all the best of luck in the future. Enough
said, the Cubs are excited and can’t wait for the
upcoming season to start!
Dinos Celebrate 30 Years of Hockey
The weekend of Friday 27th April (plus Wednesday 25th April) saw
the Hockey Section’s Ladies’ F Team, aka the Dinosaurs, celebrate
30 years of hockey. Formed in 1988 as the Club’s D Team, the Dinos are
now the F Team but still play in the Second Division.
Captain Jo Moore and her organising committee planned a weekend
of fun for the Dinos, twelve of whom had flown in from overseas for the
event. Seven of the original team members (Averil Waters, Leslie “the
General” Glancy, Lesley Walton, Susie Logan, Heather Probert, Jan
“the Salad Tosser” Breen and Mary Coghill) attended the celebration.
On the Wednesday, ten Dinos boarded ‘OverBudget’ to sail to Lamma
for a seafood dinner and on the Friday twenty-seven Dinos travelled to
Fernando’s in Macau (drinks were served on the ferry just before the
safety demonstration). On the Saturday, there was an afternoon session
on the Club Pitch, with an entertaining group warm up and a game
of ‘Hockey 5s The Fun Version’ kindly orchestrated by Chappie and
umpired by Renee Spencer. That evening, thirty-eight Dinos in their
‘Posh Frocks and Pearls’ enjoyed a delicious celebration dinner in one
of the Club’s new Happy Valley Suites. Club Chairman John Shanahan,
accompanied by General Manager Mark Pawley, GC Member for the
Hockey Section Charlie Poulton and Hockey Section Chairperson
Leena Madhvani, started proceedings with a champagne toast before
wisely departing to a safe place. Entertainment during the night included a
quiz, a dirty dancing competition and a performance by a dance troupe to
“Who Let the Dogs Out?” ‘Who?’ indeed was the cry.
Sunday was spent at the Indian Recreation Club joined by family and
friends – a grand total of 60 adults and 11 children enjoyed the sunshine,
a recovery curry buffet and then more drinks! The Dinos were easy to
spot as each one was resplendent in a purple 30th anniversary shirt, the
cost of which had been generously subsidized by the Hockey Section.
At the end of the weekend the Dinos felt thoroughly spoiled by the Club,
the Hockey Section (thanks to Lynsey Edgar, Ladies Captain for her kind
words and to Helen Champion, Communications Officer for her fabulous
poem) and Stella Bella Wines. Thank you to the Club and Hockey Section
for your generosity in helping the Dinos celebrate their 30-year milestone.
Here’s to the next 30 years – pip pip!
Farewell Chee!
Kim and Chee
Despite the unfortunate weather, spirits were high
as the Kimchees summer hockey team gathered
en masse to wish farewell to their beloved Chee.
Feeling fabulous in his dashing purple wig, Chee
entertained spectators upfront with his silky skills,
but alas it was not to be and the Kims came away
victorious – perhaps his vision was impaired by those
flowing locks?
The match was followed by fines of kimchi (what
else?!), trophies for the leavers (Chee, Georgie
Barber and Katy Spooner) and celebrations in the
Sportsman’s Bar until the early hours - the blinds
were down I hear! It was a very fitting end to a
Kimchees night and lived up to the true spirit of the
team; “win, lose, we always booze.”
14th April. The 18-end mixed-gender rink games turned out to be a tie with 18
points scooped by each side. The S C Trophy finally went to KCC at the photo
finish with a difference of 15 shots.
Charity Cup and Start of Season Lunch
Sunday morning April 29th saw more than
thirty players gather for the Tennis Society’s
Charity Cup. Donations from the tournament
participants and the greater membership
combined to raise $10,000 for the Hong Kong
Guide Dogs Association.
Play stretched across five courts and saw a total
of 50 no-let, no-deuce matches played. Befitting
the nature of the event (not to mention the early
Sunday morning) the competition was social.
Although Garreth Anwar was made to sweat
when his team was reduced to one racquet and
Warwick Foy decided to play pin the tail on the
donkey!
Thanks goes out to Jamaica Ang and Eddie
Ng and their team at the Club Sports Desk for
their invaluable assistance in arranging court
bookings and equipment for the day. Special
thanks to Allen Belobrajdic for his work as
tournament director, and Karen and Jeremy
Thorne for their work behind the scenes. Last
but not least, thank you to the players, your
generosity of spirit made for a fantastic day.
Golf News
HKFC vs HK Cricket Club
Monday 16th April, Macau GCC
A
snap of cool weather preceded this
match with golfers arriving armed with
long pants and wet weather gear that
had been tucked away in storage a few weeks
earlier. Fortunately a small spattering of rain
and a little wind would have little bearing on the
outcome with the course and greens in good
condition. HK Cricket Club went into this game
with confidence having won back this trophy for
the first time in a few years in 2017.
Jonny Brock and Mike Button led off for
HKFC hoping to capitalise on recent golf form
from Phuket but found the pairing of Andrew
Orr and Justin Pearce a tough nut to crack.
Despite a late resurgence from 4 down they had
left themselves too much to do and went down
2 and 1. Not the start we were after.
Terry Wright and Jukka Hakli were next off the
tee for the HKFC. This match stumbled along
all square until the 5th hole where Cricket Club’s
David Collins and Matt Davies went 1 up.
This was clearly the trigger needed as 3 holes
were quickly won by the HKFC pair before the
turn. This edge was maintained through the
back nine until the 16th hole where Terry finally
managed to roll in a birdie putt from off the
green to close the match out 3 and 2.
Dallas Reid and Owen Davis had the
misfortune to strike the HKCC pairing of Greg
Paull and Phil Elliott in hot form. Despite
playing reasonably well themselves they had
no answer in particular to Phil Elliott who was
having a round to remember playing well under
his handicap and helping to win this contest 3
and 2 to HKCC.
Duncan Spooner and Jenny Chapman had
the challenge of taking on Adrian Waters
(HKCC Teaching Professional) and Robert
Barber a frequent seasoned opponent who
like many HK golfers represents several of
the local golf societies. This was a very good
contest in which Duncan and Jenny played well
and gave themselves lots of opportunities but
unfortunately the putts just would not drop. The
match ended in a hard fought draw after Adrian
played some great golf to come home in even
par over the back nine.
Alas at two and a half matches to one and a half
any chance of regaining the trophy was gone
but could Phil Head and Matt Burke pull out a
win to restore some pride. Their match against
Jeremy Platts and Ray Kennedy was a ding
dong battle which ebbed and flowed with the
lead changing hands throughout. It was all up
for grabs still on the 18th tee but unfortunately
that was also the way it ended with 18 holes
not enough to decide this one and another hard
fought draw on the scoresheet.
A win to HK Cricket Club 3 points to 2 and
another year to wait before we get a crack at
this piece of silverware.
Long Drive was won by Andrew Orr (HKCC)
and Nearest Pin prizes by Owen Davis (HKFC),
Greg Paull (HKCC), Andrew Orr (HKCC), Mike
Button (HKFC) and Jonny Brock (HKFC).
KSC South Outing
Monday 23rd April
Another wonderful day for golf, 28 degrees with warm
sunshine. We thought it is going to be very hot and
humid on the day, however it turned out just fine.
As usual, the coach departure from HKFC to Sai Kung was
at 7.30am and we managed to arrive at Kai Sai Chau at
9am. We had two players join the Golf Society event for the
very first time and they were David Chiu and Irene Muk.
Welcome to the Golf Society and we are looking forward to
play more golf with you.
The first to tee off were Allan Homeming, David Chu,
David Watt and Allan Hay. Allan played a wonderful round
of golf with a score of 88 and 38 stableford points winning
David giving his ball a severe talking to
before launch!
Why is this man not on the PGA tour?
second place in the event. To celebrate this wonderful round of golf, he
was going to challenge the North Course the next day! I hope he posted
another low score!
The second to tee off were Jukka Hakli, David Lindsay and myself.
Jukka did not play very well on the front nine with 45 strokes but he
posted a very low score of 39 on the back nine. In total, he scored 84 and
won the first place with 40 stableford points. David and I witnessed one of
the greatest saves ever on hole 2 which is a 149 yards par 3 hole with a
hazard down the left side. Jukka hit a high draw to the hazard with tough
stance and could barely place his club on the rough. He chipped it out
and left him a 40 foot long putt and he made the putt. How on earth did
he do that! Then he kept his momentum going and scored 4 pars for the
remaining 7 holes to post a 23 stableford points on the back nine.
The third to tee off were Helen Hayward, Irene Muk and Melanie
Watt. Helen won 3 NP 3s and 2 shots nearest the pin in par 4. Melanie
managed to win the NP on hole 11. The last group won all the nearest
to the pin! Helen posted one of the lowest rounds with 80 and won third
place with 34 stableford points. Congratulations to all winners!
Below is the breakdown of the scoring
Club Dominates In Swimrun Series
TerraMar has brought the popular
SwimRun series to Hong Kong. In
SwimRun, competitors can use any aids
they want to use, however aids must be carried
at all times. So, unless you have leather soles,
you swim with your shoes on! The Club is a
big supporter of the event and dominated the
podium in the inaugural event in Sai Kung in
November 2017.
On 22nd April, starting from South Bay, the
second race of the SwimRun series consisted
of a 1.5k swim followed by a 1k run to Middle
Bay and a 0.7k swim to Repulse Bay. A run
along the beach and the promenade for 2.3k
was followed by a 0.5k swim to the Hong Kong
Golf Club. The final 2.7k scurry up the trail to
Parkview and then down to the finish at the
Tai Tam BBQ area completed the race. Two
races ran simultaneously with SwimRun: the
AquaTerra aquathon (1.5k swim, 14k trail run)
and the Terra14 (14k trail run).
Matthieu got line honours in the race, closely
followed by Vasco and Iain. After the race,
Society warrior Iain Veitch left us to relocate
back to his homeland. Hong Kong’s loss is
Scotland’s gain. Good luck Iain!
Splash Dash Relay
HKFC Swimming and Triathlon Society recently
participated in the annual SPLASH DASH relay
in support of SPLASH Hong Kong. SPLASH
is a charity organisation that conducts swim
and water safety courses for under-served
communities who do not have the means to
access them, with a particular focus on Hong
Kong’s domestic helper population. Bringing
together experienced coaches in a supportive
group setting, Splash provides an opportunity
for participants to learn an important life skill
which develops confidence, improves well being
and allows people to flourish both in and out
of the water. By 2020, SPLASH will provide
5000 of Hong Kong’s domestic helpers with the
opportunity to learn how to swim.
On 18th March, HKFC’s star swimmers teamed
up with two SPLASH graduates in a quest to
swim as many laps as possible in a thirty minute
period. Not only did the Swimming and Triathlon
Society raise more than $18,000 for SPLASH,
we were also one of the top performing teams
on the day, completing more than 90 laps
in thirty minutes! Many thanks to our relay
participants Jessica McCarroll, Matthieu
Maury, Rupert Puels and Sally Gentle for
their stellar performance on the day and to
the entire squad for their fundraising efforts.
The Swimming and Triathlon Society focuses
on more than just training and competition.
This event was a great opportunity to promote
the sport we love, ensure it’s accessibility and
support the local community.
