ANDY KING
AGE: 33
POSITION: Midfielder
SIGNED: July 2021
It was a dream come true when Andy King signed
for Bristol City in the summer of 2021, years
after watching the Robins from his seat in the
Dolman Stand as a youngster.
King made his debut on the opening
day of the season, before scoring on
his first away game at Middlesbrough
(pictured). He described that as “a
really nice moment…to score for your
boyhood team was a nice feeling.”
Injury has stopped King from making
more than 14 appearances this season
after he joined on a free transfer last July.
He was previously abroad with OH Leuven
after 13 years with Leicester City.
King made 379 appearances for the Foxes after his
debut in October 2007 and scored three goals in
their Premier League-winning 2015/16 campaign.
In his later years while contracted to Leicester,
King spent time on loan at Swansea City, Derby
County, Rangers and Huddersfield Town.
The Barnstaple-born player has been capped 50
times by Wales, for whom he qualifies through his
grandfather.
THE
GAFFER
NIGEL
PEARSON
Good afternoon
everyone and
welcome to our
final home game
of the 2021/22
season.
We extend a warm welcome to Shota Arveladze,
his players, staff and supporters to Ashton Gate
where both teams head into their penultimate
matches of the campaign.
On behalf of our staff and squad, I want to thank
each and every one of you for your great support
over the season.
Home or away,
you have stuck by
the team through
thick and thin. We
are lucky to have
you.
This season has
been work in
progress, we’ve
learnt a lot about
this squad and
there a lot of positives we can take into the
2022/23 season.
Before we can look too far ahead, there are still
two games left to play in the Championship.
We’ve exceeded last season’s 51 points but
there’s still six points left to play for against Hull
City and then Huddersfield Town next weekend.
We want to end the season strongly and in the
last few weeks we have put together a better run
of results.
I’m pleased with some of the progress we have
started to see and our last game against Derby
County was very pleasing. I thought we were
excellent against Wayne Rooney’s side, notably
in the first half but we still created a lot after the
break and we deserved the 3-1 win overall.
Andi Weimann scored his 20th goal of the
season last weekend and that is very well
deserved. I know Abi Harrison from the women’s
team had been giving him some banter about
getting to 20 and I’m sure he is delighted to have
hit the milestone with two games to go. His
work-rate is phenomenal, he’s a leader in this
team and we’re very grateful for everything he
gives for the shirt.
We also gave
young Duncan
Idehen his
debut at Pride
Park after
being named
on the bench a
couple of times
previously. He
played just under
20 minutes last
weekend and,
while I’m sure he was nervous, he soon got into
the thick of the action. He’s physical, a good
athlete and it’s good to give him a taste of this
level of football.
HOME OR AWAY,
YOU HAVE STUCK
BY THE TEAM
THROUGH THICK
AND THIN. WE ARE
LUCKY TO HAVE YOU.
We hope you can look back on the season so
far and see that there is an honest team here,
playing for you and that we can go into the
summer on a positive note.
Thanks all again for your support.
Cheers,
Nige.
HULL CITY
DID YOU
KNOW?
Hull City are nicknamed the Tigers because
of their traditional striped home colours of
black and amber, similar to that of a tiger.
KEY PLAYER
11
KEANE
LEWIS-POTTER
SITTING SIDE BY SIDE IN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP, TODAY’S TEAMS ARE
NOW SAFE IN THE SECOND TIER OF
ENGLISH FOOTBALL FOR ANOTHER
SEASON.
The Tigers head to Ashton
Gate in good form, with three
wins from their last four games
pushing them away from any
threat of the drop.
The Kingston-upon-Hull born attacking
midfielder established himself in the Hull
first team last season, when he netted 15
goals in all competitions to help fire the
Tigers to promotion from League One.
The 21-year-old has backed up that
with 11 goals in his first taste of
Championship football – scoring 12
in all competitions.
Now, there is talk of a possible move
up to the Premier League on the cards,
with the England youth international
being linked with a move to Tottenham
Hotspur. He has one year remaining
on his Tigers contract, with a further
12-month club option.
The Hull Academy product agreed his
first professional contract shortly after his
17th birthday before penning an extended
deal when turning 18 in February 2019 – little
over a month after he had made his first senior
appearance as a substitute in an FA Cup tie
away at Millwall. He’s since played 120 times
in all competitions, scoring 29 goals.
Last time out saw a man of
the match display from Keane
Lewis-Potter, who scored twice
and set up another in a 3-0 win
over Reading – who themselves
are also safe, with their nearest
rivals Peterborough United
losing at Nottingham Forest last
weekend.
Speaking after the win, Tigers
boss Shota Arverladze told BBC
Sport: ”I think everything we did
well and we should be happy
for this day,” so he’ll be keen to
see his side pick up where they
left off this afternoon.
Academy graduate Lewis-
Potter has been a stand-out
performer this term, returning
an impressive goal haul at
Championship level .
While he has been linked with
a move to the Premier League,
his club will be fighting for his
signature. "Not yet,” Arverladze
has said when asked if a new
Hull defender Di'Shon Bernard is challenged by Callum O'Dowda during
the 2-2 draw at MKM Stadium in December
contract has been offered. “Of
course we will have to, but then
it's up to him.”
Lewis-Potter still has two games
to equal his tally from last
season, when he helped Hull City
win promotion from League One.
That was a quick comeback
for the Tigers who had finished
bottom of the Championship
in the 2019/20 campaign, and
were playing in the third tier for
the first time since the 2004/05
campaign.
With two games remaining Hull
– who are in their first season
under the new ownership of
Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali
– can only finish as high as 17th,
a position currently occupied
by Nigel Pearson’s side, albeit
they could finish as low as
20th, with their season finale at
home to Nottingham Forest next
Saturday.
T 0333 234 1445
It has been a year for
double celebration at the
Robins Foundation with
a record-breaking 100
per cent of its 250 education
students passing their BTEC
programmes in the charity’s
milestone 20th anniversary.
The Foundation has run 132
weekly sessions, proudly offering
130 of those sessions free of
charge. The sessions cater for
all ages, offering a wide range
of programmes from walking
football to those over 50, to
pan-disability football sessions
that welcome anyone – no
matter their disability.
With 90 per cent of participants
feeling an increase in confidence
and self-esteem from attending
the sessions, the Foundation has
also helped individuals commit
to a healthy lifestyle through their
health and wellbeing sessions Fit
Robins and Slim2win. More than
700kgs of weight was lost by
participants in both programmes,
who were taught how to live
healthier and more active lives.
The Foundation ran 66 days
of holiday camps providing
safe environments for 1,743
young people during the school
holidays.
The camps help support families
who rely on free school meals
throughout the holidays and are
the perfect opportunity for those
aged six to 12 years old to get
active and have fun while also
developing their footballing skills
and making new friends – 15,393
meals were served to ensure that
all those who attended received
a free meal every day.
Bristol City players and staff have
been heavily involved with the
Foundation and supported in any
way they can. Players surprised
fans and attended several
different Robins Foundation
training sessions, joining
in with games and offering
valuable advice and words of
encouragement to those who
could only dream of receiving it.
Robins Foundation CEO Dan
White said: “As the season draws
to a close it provides a great
opportunity to reflect on the
progress made over the last
12 months.
"The Foundation continues to
grow and offer new projects and
programmes which have inspired
people to engage in meaningful,
positive activities, and ultimately
improve their lives. This wouldn’t
be possible without the support
of the players and staff at the
football club who have continued
to champion the work of the
Foundation."
SEASON
REVIEW
Words James Crawley
Weimann Wonderland:
Top scorer Andi Weimann
celebrates his hat-trick
against Millwall
This was Nigel Pearson’s
first full season in charge
in BS3 and there was no
doubting the expectation
set by the crowd after how
the 2020/21 season had panned out.
City have ridden the waves of change. It’s been a
turbulent course and overall the 2021/22 campaign
has been another tough one to take on the chin.
However, if lessons can be learnt, there’s plenty to
look forward to on the horizon and the manager
will head into the summer break with a clearer
idea of how to move the ship forward.
WORK IN
PROGRESS
THE ROBINS MAY
ONLY HAVE RUFFLED
JUST A FEW
FEATHERS OVER THE
LAST 10 MONTHS
BUT WITH PATIENCE
CAN COME GREAT
REWARD
Improving on the previous season will always be
a club’s minimum ambition and, while City know
they weren’t at their best for a lot of the campaign,
they have exceeded last season’s 51-points with
at least five fewer defeats come the final whistle
on May 7th.
Pearson will demand more from his squad,
however, when they return from the summer break
if they are to push higher up the table next time
around.
This was only his first full season in charge and he
will have learnt a great deal about his squad. He
will now decide who will continue on the journey
going forward and where he can make tweaks to
improve.
WINNING AT HOME
Going into the 2021/22 campaign, City knew they
were without a home win since January, and on
the opening day were presented with the chance
to break that unwanted run against Blackpool.
In the event, a last-ditch equaliser from the
Tangerines meant the wait for victory in BS3 would
run on until the end of October.
That home win should have come against
Nottingham Forest in mid-October but City let
slip their lead in the final embers of the game –
something that would prove to be the Achilles 4
4 heel on more than one occasion. There wasn’t
long to wait though until Andreas Weimann’s
quick-fire, first-half double ensured victory over
Barnsley at Ashton Gate, and secured a first win
on home soil in 17 attempts.
City then went three games unbeaten in BS3, yet
in an ironic turn of events, away form soon took
a dip. The side had recorded memorable victories
at Reading (3-2), Cardiff City (2-1), QPR (2-1) and
Peterborough United (3-2) in the early part of the
season, but between late October and March the
Robins went 11 games without a win on the road.
Three points at Blackburn Rovers finally brought
that run to an end, while City will travel to their
final away game of the campaign at Huddersfield
Town on the back of victories at Stoke City and
Derby County.
DOING THE DOUBLE
The Severnside derby is always a fixture the fans
look out for and the bragging rights remain this side
of this side of the Servern Bridges. Weimann was
the hero in South Wales back in August, where his
near-post finish gave us a half-time lead, before a
rocket of a volley from Antoine Semenyo's cross
sealed victory in front of 2,453 travelling supporters.
We then had to come from behind in the return
home fixture in January. Chris Martin was on fire
as he returned to the starting line-up, scoring
either side of the break, before Weimann's 13th
goal of the season sealed a memorable win.
Pearson’s side also secured maximum points over
Reading, Derby County and Stoke City.
MOMENTS FOR THE
YOUNGSTERS
Even in a campaign which won’t end as hoped, there
were still moments which will live in the memory.
Just ask George Tanner who at 19 stepped up
to Championship football for the first time after
signing from Carlisle United at the end of August.
Clockwise from left: Singing in the rain – Chris Martin marks his late winner at Peterborough United; Great Scott – the
'Guernsey Grealish' has enjoyed a breakthrough season; Keeping them quiet – Andi Weimann keeps the home crowd quiet
with a memorable winner at Cardiff; Home sweet home – the fans celebrate City's first win at Ashton Gate in 17 games.
He went on to score his first goal for the club just
a few weeks later in the 3-2 win at Peterborough
United. It was a case of singing in the rain for
the City fans at the rain-soaked Weston Homes
Stadium, where Chris Martin netted a late winner,
with a very fitting, wet sliding celebration.
Alex Scott has also enjoyed playing, and
particularly scoring, in BS3 with all four of his
goals so far coming on home turf, notably the only
goal to seal a 1-0 win over the Rams in December.
It’s been a coming-of-age campaign for the young
midfielder, who was awarded a new contract in
August on the day of his 18th birthday.
In all, Pearson handed 10 debuts to his players
of all ages across the campaign, with 19-year-old
defender Duncan Idehen the latest to feature in the
3-1 win at Pride Park.
Cameron Pring and Robbie Cundy were also
among the players to have earned their first team
runout after previous campaigns on the fringes.
WEIMANN WONDERLAND
Weimann will look back on the best goalscoring
campaign of his career. After missing much of last
season with a knee injury, he opened his account
with a brace against Reading in August, before
netting his second professional hat-trick in a 3-2 win
over Millwall. The Austrian – who was also called up
to the national team in March for the first time since
2015 – also scored in both victories over Cardiff
City while his latest goal, taking him to 20 for the
campaign, came against Derby County last weekend.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Pearson has often said this is an “honest” team
and there is plenty of promise in the group. No
doubt the squad will be honest with themselves,
reflect on what has gone and regroup as the
manager heads into his second full season in
charge. The foundations of the club are set but,
with more improvement and if lessons can be
learnt, there is a lot of promise ahead. See you
back here in August!
CON
SULLIVAN
Bristol City was saddened to hear
of the passing of Con Sullivan, a
former goalkeeper who made 73
league and cup appearances for
the Robins between 1949-1954.
Cornelius Sullivan was spotted playing for Horfield
Old Boys in the Downs League and took part in
a trial with City’s reserve side at Fulham on April
18th 1949. The Western Daily Press reported
a number of “brilliant saves” and Con signed
professionally in May, then aged 20.
This match went ahead on March 30th, as City
supporters got to see Con perform in Arsenal’s
colours.
At the Gunners, Con was largely understudy to
Jack Kelsey before he was forced to retire from a
Con returned to Bristol as a fork-lift truck driver
initially at Robertson’s Golden Shred factory in
Brislington and he continued to play inbetween the
sticks at Robertson Athletic.
He went on to make his first team debut on
December 16th 1950, a 2-0 home win against
AFC Bournemouth.
He quickly became a first team regular, and by
February 1954 secured a move to then Division
One champions Arsenal, with a friendly between
the two clubs arranged as part of the transfer.
Con continued to live in Knowle until his death
earlier this month. He was aged 93 and had
celebrated his birthday at City’s home match
against Blackburn Rovers in November.
The thoughts of everyone associated with the
club go out to Con’s family and friends at this sad
time.
