A QUICK GOD’S COUNTRY UPDATE
Just in case some folks missed the announcement several weeks ago, our God’s
Country community and worship service will be staying at our Rt. 8 Campus on
Saturday evenings at 7 pm as we move into the future. Thanks for the many
conversations and feedback we have received related to this decision, and
please continue to pray for Jesus to be lifted up as Lord in every part of our life
together as First Church here in Butler!
WOMEN’S MINISTRY GATHERING
The Women’s Ministry will meet on Saturday, May 14, from 9:30 - 11 am in Ritts
Chapel of the Downtown Campus. We will hear more about Life Choices Maternity
Home at this gathering.
UNITED METHODIST CONVERSATION: THIS WEEKEND!
Those who have been following the “saga” of the United Methodist Church in
recent years know that the journey has been challenging to say the least. A General
Conference that was to happen in 2020 had to be postponed once, twice,
and now a third time due to the pandemic. Major decisions were to be made at
this Conference regarding the future of the UMC, and the delays have caused
anxiousness and questions for most of the people called United Methodist - including
those of us here at First Church. I’d like to offer as much information as we
have at the moment about where things stand in our tribe, how our Ad Board has
been monitoring all of this and what decisions have been made so far, and what
the next steps are for our church in the months to come. Join me on Sunday, May
1 at 12:15 pm at our Downtown Campus sanctuary for a time of conversation. Rob
Deemer, our Ad. Board chair and Pastor Tom Holman will join me in facilitating the
discussion which will hopefully help you know as much as we know about where
things stand with the United Methodist Church at this moment in time.
JESUS CHANGES EVERYTHING
This week: Mark 8:34-38
Repentance is a concrete thing. It’s a choice that says the way of Jesus – the way
of God’s Kingdom - is ultimately and eternally far more important than anything
about the temporal world that we live in. In fact, the temporal world can only
be experienced as it was intended to be when it’s lived in the way of Jesus.
Repentance is the choice to allow Jesus to shape us in his way – inwardly and
outwardly. We “lose our lives” for Jesus’ sake and the sake of the gospel, Mark
says. It’s placing ourselves consistently in the places where Jesus has promised
to be so that the sails of our lives can catch the wind of his Spirit, allowing him to
set the course of our lives by his heart and priorities. In our journey of discipleship,
repentance is the continual choice to surrender our lives to Jesus, inviting him to
shape himself in us more and more with everything that occurs in life.
