But it is also hard work, and that’s without throwing COVID and an increasing pet population into the mix. There are always surprises and events we can’t predict, like the Labrador that swallowed a sock or a patient struggling to breathe with heart failure. As professionally trained vets and nurse we have to be ready to cope with any situation that presents itself any time of the day, respond quickly and have the right team around us to save a life. Below are a collection of photos telling a short story of what we see and treat in a single day at McMaster & Heap. We all support and help each other manage cases, workload and those emergency walkins. It takes a very special kind of person to do what we do day in day out, 7 days a week. Steve and I are immensely proud of the team that have chosen to be part of the McMaster & Heap Family, and I feel proud every single day of the work done by our entire team. Steve performing Cataract surgery. Blue was referred to McMaster & Heap for an MRI because he’d started seizuring and was not well controlled on epileptic medication. Suffice to say we couldn’t identify a cause causing the seizures so can safely say he probably has idiopathic epilepsy, which will require lifelong daily drug treatment. Ratepayers expect councillors to ‘treat this as a full-time job’ RICCARTON urgently needs candidates who put community needs before personal ambitions. We are at the time when people are weighing up whether they put their names forward as candidates in October’s local body elections. The Central Riccarton Residents’ Association believes there is an urgent need for potential candidates to understand that ratepayers and residents have very clear expectations of these candidates, after nine years of instances of sub-standard representation at both council and board levels. Riccarton ratepayers are entitled to expect that a councillor, for a salary of $114 per annum, will treat this as very much a full-time job. Attend all council briefings and all council meetings, speak at meetings on behalf of the residents and remember that you first need to find out the views of residents, which can be done by knocking on doors and, of course, listening to the local residents’ associations and local business people. The councillor and the board members need to be living in the ward so they have a local presence for the three-year term. Moving out of the ward or leaving Christchurch altogether has resulted in a lack of representation for our ward at both council and community board level. CRRA believes central Riccarton, the most densely populated area in Christchurch, has been seriously disadvantaged for the last nine years because as housing intensification has markedly increased, the council management and even some elected representatives have attempted to strip the area of its facilities: close the service centre, remove library facilities, close the Wharenui Pool, close the two bus lounges, turn what used to be a vibrant community centre into just another branch of Hereford St and wreck the central Riccarton Rd shopping area by removing on-street parking and narrowing the road. We have a veterinarian with a special interest in treating cancers in pets and she invests a lot of time thoroughly researching the right treatments for your pets. Not every cancer pet patient is a candidate for chemotherapy but It can be hugely rewarding when we can extend a pets life and give them real quality. Thursday May 19 2022 5 Collaboration a first for education Belfast School project co-ordinator Jon Rogers reports on the site blessing of a new concept in education LED BY Maaka Tau from Tuahiwi Marae, a blessing and sod-lifting ceremony was held in brilliant sunshine earlier this month. Two schools will be co-located on the site in a new subdivision by Johns Rd. There will be a senior campus for Belfast School and a completely new school for Allenvale Special School, currently situated in Bryndwr. The project marks new developments in education. This is the first time a special school has been co-located with a mainstream school, and also the first time a primary school has been split over two locations. The two schools plan to explore ways in which they can collaborate on the site to the benefit of all students. The design team is WSP (formerly OPUS) and the construction will be led by Leighs Construction, both of which have much experience in building schools in Canterbury. At the start of the planning process the Belfast community stated it did not want a new school to create competition and division in the community. The blessing ceremony was attended by a large number of people involved in the planning and construction process. Principals Ian Poulter (Allenvale) and Sue Elley (Belfast) spoke about their vision for the new co-located schools and thanked everyone in the Ministry of Education, planning, design and construction for their work in bringing the project to reality.
