competition, run by Waimakariri
Libraries, delivered outstanding workby
young people.
Heldduring the school holidays the
competition was to encouragethe
creativity and community pride of the
youth in Waimakariri,says libraries’
digital inclusionco­ordinator, Sarah
Stenhouse.
‘‘Wewere thrilled with the quality of the
entries, and inspired by the skills and
confidenceofthe winners of the photo and
video categories.
‘‘Wehad entriesfrom Kaiapoi,
Rangiora,Oxford and Pegasus.
‘‘Skate parks were the most popular
topic,’’ Sarahsays.
Entrants couldtake up to three photosor
makeashortvideo to showsomething that
makes the town they liveinspecial.
The competition was judgedbylibrary
staff who saidthe winning video,Why I
LoveLiving in Pegasus, filmed by Ben
Jackman,aged 10, of Pegasus,was a
‘‘gorgeous,spectacular pieceofwork’’.
The winning photograph, takenby
BenjaminBoltar, aged 13, of his brother
Blake, aged10, doinga‘‘deck grab’’ on his
scooter at the skate parkinKaiapoi’s
TrousselotPark, also earned high praise
fromthe judgeswho said it was an
‘‘awesome photo’’.
Ben’s mother HeatherJackman,said he
filmedthe video on her iPhone13which
has ‘‘incredible stabilisation’’.
He edited it on the Final Cut Pro
softwareprogramme and was ‘‘surprised
but overthe moon’’ to win the video section
of the competition.
BenjaminBoltar’smum, Chelsie, said
his winning photographwas alsotaken on
an iPhone.
The family all enjoy taking photographs.

the competitionBlake was quick to point
out that he should havewon the prize
because he did the trick which madethe
photo.
Chelsie saidthe skate parkis‘‘a real
featurefor Kaiapoi.The boyslove it. It is a
drawcardfor families and kids of all ages’’.
Ben and Benjamin each received a
BluetoothSpeaker,while the secondplaced
entrants received afamilymovie
pass,donated by Rangiora TownHall
Cinema. All participants received achild’s
swim pass.
