competition, run by Waimakariri<br />

Libraries, delivered outstanding workby<br />

young people.<br />

Heldduring the school holidays the<br />

competition was to encouragethe<br />

creativity and community pride of the<br />

youth in Waimakariri,says libraries’<br />

digital inclusionco­ordinator, Sarah<br />

Stenhouse.<br />

‘‘Wewere thrilled with the quality of the<br />

entries, and inspired by the skills and<br />

confidenceofthe winners of the photo and<br />

video categories.<br />

‘‘Wehad entriesfrom Kaiapoi,<br />

Rangiora,Oxford and Pegasus.<br />

‘‘Skate parks were the most popular<br />

topic,’’ Sarahsays.<br />

Entrants couldtake up to three photosor<br />

makeashortvideo to showsomething that<br />

makes the town they liveinspecial.<br />

The competition was judgedbylibrary<br />

staff who saidthe winning video,Why I<br />

LoveLiving in Pegasus, filmed by Ben<br />

Jackman,aged 10, of Pegasus,was a<br />

‘‘gorgeous,spectacular pieceofwork’’.<br />

BenjaminBoltar, aged 13, of his brother<br />

Blake, aged10, doinga‘‘deck grab’’ on his<br />

scooter at the skate parkinKaiapoi’s<br />

TrousselotPark, also earned high praise<br />

fromthe judgeswho said it was an<br />

‘‘awesome photo’’.<br />

Ben’s mother HeatherJackman,said he<br />

filmedthe video on her iPhone13which<br />

has ‘‘incredible stabilisation’’.<br />

He edited it on the Final Cut Pro<br />

softwareprogramme and was ‘‘surprised<br />

but overthe moon’’ to win the video section<br />

of the competition.<br />

BenjaminBoltar’smum, Chelsie, said<br />

his winning photographwas alsotaken on<br />

an iPhone.<br />

The family all enjoy taking photographs.<br />

Christopher, aged 8, also won aprize in the<br />

The brothers use their camera skillsto<br />

critique theirscootertechniquesand<br />

when Benjamin’sphoto won first prizein<br />

the competitionBlake was quick to point<br />

out that he should havewon the prize<br />

because he did the trick which madethe<br />

photo.<br />

Chelsie saidthe skate parkis‘‘a real<br />

featurefor Kaiapoi.The boyslove it. It is a<br />

drawcardfor families and kids of all ages’’.<br />

Ben and Benjamin each received a<br />

BluetoothSpeaker,while the secondplaced<br />

entrants received afamilymovie<br />

pass,donated by Rangiora TownHall<br />

Cinema. All participants received achild’s<br />

swim pass.<br />
