4 Thursday May 26 2022 Kirkwood Intermediate Schooling for the Whole Child’ The focus of a successful school is the pupil. The growth of our children at Kirkwood is supported by the many extension opportunities we offer over and above our classroom activities. We work on extending learning opportunities in a number of areas. Technology Some of the highlights in our technology area include: • Robotics; • 3D Printing; • EPro8 Challenge; • Fashion Design and Make. Technology is a favourite area for many students due to the ‘hands-on’ problem solving approach to learning. Music Music is taught as part of the performing arts curriculum in all classrooms however, extra opportunities are available for students to learn a wide variety of music. This year, our students have been learning the Guitar, Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Brass, singing in the Choir and playing in the Orchestra. Sports/Hākinakina Apart from the regular physical education programmes within the classrooms there are many other sports offered at Kirkwood. Some of the sports played are Netball, Football, Cross Country, Swimming, Rugby, Basketball, Water polo, Korfball, Mountain Biking, Touch Rugby, Tchoukball and Rugby League. Extension Groups, Competitions and Events Our students have many opportunities to participate in various competitions and events offered at Kirkwood. These include: • University of Canterbury Academic Competitions; • Cantamath; • Canterbury-Westland Science Fair; Awards • Science Badges; • Otago Problem Solving; • Art Cup; • Kids’ Lit Quiz; • Orchestra; • Choir; • Leadership Opportunities; • House Captains; • School Production; • School Council. Thursday May 26 2022 5 Mural aimed at creating a sense of community pride • By Emily Moorhouse AN ARTIST, a project manager and a natural paint company have teamed up to see a 32.4m mural installed in Radley Park. The mural has been in the works for more than a year now and will sit along the fence line at Woolston’s Roimata Food Commons. Roimata Food Commons cofounder Michael Reynolds said the idea behind the mural is to help people feel welcome and a sense of pride within the community after seeing the positive reaction from the street art postearthquakes. “Being a reasonably creative person myself it felt like adding some artwork was a logical next step,” Reynolds said. Freelance artist Sandrine Castel designed the mural to align with the natural aspects of the gardens at Radley Park. “I was a preacher for Roimata for many years, I was following them, so when Michael approached me it was obvious that I wanted my artwork to be associated with those kinds of projects,” Castel said. “When you’re an artist and someone asks you to create something for them it’s obviously what you’re aiming for,” Castel said. “Also as a graphic designer I only work with conscious CREATE: Artist Sandrine Castel works on one of 27 panels that will be constructed on the walls at the Roimata Food Commons at Radley Park, Woolston. PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE businesses, I guess Roimata was perfectly aligned with my values as well.” Reynolds reached out to Natural Paint Co about a year ago and painting the green coats started about six months ago with the help of staff from design school Yoobee. Two weeks ago, Castel started tracing and painting the design, which was expected to be finished in a week, but now she thinks it will take at least another two weeks. “It’s taking much longer than we anticipated,” Castel said. “It’s a very time-consuming project which is still alright, I’m kind of in my happy space when Congestion in car park a problem MESS: Dumped rubbish at Spreydon Domain. • From page 1 Perazzolo raised other issues with the car park such as the fading parking lines, including disabled parks. I’m painting.” Because the process is taking longer than expected Reynolds is trying to source funding to pay Castel for her time. Reynolds expects the mural to be erected in spring, as the colder damp weather in winter would make it difficult to do the touch-ups once its installed. ‘There’s a real buzz amongst the kids’ • From page 1 The highest fundraising team was the Youthline team, raising a total of $9587. Each day for a week the pupils completed 31 minutes of exercise to represent the average time of 31 minutes that a young person in need spends talking to a Youthline counsellor. Principal Alice Denley said the idea for the school to participate in the challenge stemmed from Bullying Free NZ Week and Pink Shirt Day. “For the past few years, our student council has run events throughout the week at school,” Denley said. “This year, we wanted to do something bigger, so we have married the three events together.” Each pupil created an online profile to promote the cause and were donated money from their friends and family, some even receiving donations from family members who live overseas. “There’s a real buzz amongst the kids participating. It’s so awesome to see them encouraging each other and pushing themselves through to the full 31 minutes. “Two year 5/6 boys were overheard explaining what we were doing to a member of the public. Hearing them articulate the ‘why’ behind our cause was so special,” Denley said. “They knew exactly how to explain the significance of the 31 minutes too.” The type of exercise varied from HIIT classes to cross country and circuit training in the school’s hall. Denley said maintaining an awareness of bullying is important and the school aims to create a safe, respectful and inclusive environment. “If students are being bullied, we want them to feel well supported, so they know what to do and how to respond. Our teachers offer mindfulness and values based programmes to support the well being of their students.” “We also have Kaimahi from Mana Ake and Christchurch Methodist Mission working with individuals or whānau to support their learning or emotional wellbeing,” Denley said.
