Life Transformation Through Nature want to transform and redirect your life through nature-based learning and skills? All while making a positive impact on local wildlife havens? Transforming The Trent Valley’s Transforming Lives programme could help and applications for the next cohort will open in August! By Simon Lowe The 10-12 month programme equips trainees with valuable skills and experience while also preparing them for employment. Completion of a City and Guilds level 2 Diploma in Work based Environmental Conservation is also included. The programme is open to anyone and we have people of all ages and backgrounds sign-up. We think this is a fantastic opportunity, but don’t just take our word for it… Here’s what recent trainee, Liz, had to say about the programme: “I wanted to join the traineeship as I am looking for a mid-life career change. After spending the last few years working part time to raise children, I wanted to retrain in something that I have a passion for – wildlife and conservation. This course has covered a diverse range of skills and knowledge and given me an insight into many areas of conservation work. It has also allowed me to meet and network with people who already work in this field. “The course has been physically hard work but also a lot of fun. I have very much enjoyed meeting all the staff and volunteers who look after the local Wildlife Trust sites and working alongside them, learning all the time. It is very rewarding to be able to see tangible improvements from the work you are doing.” The latest trainees carried out various types of habitat management across the Trent Valley, constantly improving and developing their teamwork and communication skills. They acquired woodland management skills by pruning, thinning, felling small trees and coppicing. Working alongside the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Trent Valley volunteers, they also practiced the art of hedge laying. They’ve learnt how to implement safe working practices, manual handling, dynamic risk assessment and construction skills while completing the renovation and installation of a boardwalk at Hilton Gravel Pits. Not all the sessions are practical as tree identification, surveys of vegetation and access issues assessment and solutions are also covered. Written work cements and demonstrates their understanding and knowledge of the subjects covered throughout the programme.
