Speak up on climate change now!
Can you change the world in less than 10 minutes? It seems
unlikely, BUT the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary
(RDKB) has launched its climate change survey and it needs
people in its electoral areas to complete it. Now.
So yes, you can make a difference, maybe even change your
world, within a matter of minutes.
“We’re seeking local opinions on climate change. We need
to hear stories from our RDKB rural communities to know
what citizens are thinking. We want to understand their concerns
and challenges, know how their lives and livelihoods are
affected, and identify what barriers there are to taking action
so we can tailor the help and support we provide,” says Freya
Phillips, senior energy specialist with the Regional District of
Kootenay Boundary. Phillips helps the RDKB lead from the
front as an exemplar of best practices. “This survey is all about
creating an action plan, one that effectively reduces energy and
emissions, prepares local people for climate change and helps
them adapt. It’s happening, we see it all around us and we collectively
can do something about it. We just need residents’
input,” she adds.
The survey aims to drill into the experiences and priorities
of those living and working in rural communities, rather
than their urban neighbours, to provide a tailored approach.
RDKB’s subsequent help, support and action will then be
appropriately shaped to the nuances of the region.
If you live or own a business in Areas A, B (Lower Columbia
– Old Glory), C (Christina Lake), D (Rural Grand Forks) or
E (West Boundary), you can take action, and give local government
the information it needs to ‘walk the talk’ on climate
action.
The survey can be filled in online jointheconversation.rdkb.
com/climate-action-plan. Paper copies can be completed at
the following venues: RDKB office reception (Trail and Grand
Forks), the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre, Christina Lake Welcome
Centre, The Riverside Centre in Rock Creek and Beaverdale
Post Office. Survey closes 31 May.
Only 19 quick fire answers stand in the way of you and resiliency
against fire, drought, flood, food insecurity, and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions throughout the Kootenay and
Boundary areas.
The results of the survey will determine priorities and how
the RDKB moves forwards to reduce emissions, increase
building energy efficiencies, conserve water, Firesmart properties
and remove barriers for individuals and businesses to
take climate action, either directly, in partnership with others
or advocating at a provincial and federal level.
CKISS seeking volunteers
The Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society (CKISS) is
seeking volunteers to join the fight against aquatic invasive species
in the Central Kootenay region. A new community science
monitoring initiative has been launched by CKISS with support
from the Living Lakes Canada’s National Lake Blitz program
in 2022 with the goal to prevent the introduction and spread
of invasive mussels, clams and plants into Kootenay Lake and
beyond.
The organization is currently seeking community members
who own private docks in Area A, D and E of Kootenay Lake
to help monitor for invasive zebra and quagga mussels (Dreissena
polymorpha and Dresissena bugenis). Volunteers will
receive two assembled mussel monitors to attach to their docks
and be required to check them throughout the summer and fall
of 2022. Wondering if your private dock is eligible for mussel
monitoring? Visit www.ckiss.ca/action/volunteer for a map of
eligible areas.
Early detection of invasive mussels is critical because they
have negative impacts on biodiversity, water quality, recreation,
fisheries, and species at risk. The mussels can damage infrastructure
such as lakefront property, hydropower facilities and
municipal water supply facilities.
In addition, the CKISS is seeking volunteers who are interested
in learning to identify and prevent aquatic invasive species,
such as Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) and invasive
plants, like yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus). and purple loosestrife
(Lythrum salicaria) through shoreline surveys on Kootenay
Lake. Positions will run during the fall of 2022.
Asian clams are a concern because they can clog water treatment
systems, contaminate drinking water, and negatively
alter aquatic ecosystems by competing with native species for
food and habitat. Invasive plants like yellow flag iris and purple
loosestrife can reduce biodiversity. They lack natural predators
and can out compete native species for space and resources.
CKISS will offer training, resources and equipment for all the
volunteers, all they ask is that you sign up by visiting www.ckiss.
ca/action/volunteer.
“Volunteers play a vital role at CKISS, we are always happy
to receive a helping hand in collecting data that will support
local conservation issues”, states Laurie Frankcom, education
program coordinator CKISS.
Office hours: Monday -Thursday 8:30am - 4:00pm
Having worked in the UK, New Zealand,
Norway, and even the “Valley of Giants” in
Australia, I came to Canada. After working
for a year at the coast, with some of
the largest trees in Canada, I moved to
the Nelson area. I started this business
and found hard-working like-minded
professionals to join me.
We know trees.
We provide:
• FireSmart property management
• experienced climbing arborists
• tree pruning, fruit bearing and others
• hedge maintenance
• technical tree removal
• crane assisted removals
• emergency work, 24/7 call-outs
• post storm cleanup work
• wood chipper and dump truck
We are insured, WorksafeBC registered
Highly recommend! Jay took down
two large trees for me and he did
an amazing job! Very professional
as well as fast and efficient!
Thank you! ~ Terisa Janni, Fruitvale
Jay does an excellent job. He and
his helper just removed an awkward
maple and did a bunch of
pruning on our property in Kaslo.
Can’t recommend him highly
enough! ~ Rod Dunnett, Kaslo
Jay does a great job!
Really professional and very
skilled.
~ Cody Crawford, Trail
Jay is fantastic.
Highly recommend him.
He fell three large birches near our
house. He’s insured and quick.
