Notes for Heman Bump:
Age becomes a mystery starting with obtaining the 1870 Census information from Howell, Michigan. Heman's
age according to the 1870 Census is 39. This would place the birth year as 1831 to 1832. But that would be after
the death of his mother Zylpha.
Other sources prior to finding the 1870 Census of Howell, Michigan, such as Elijah Knapp Fuller Family Record
and A Genealogy of: Bump-Bumpas-Bumpass-Bumpers-Bumps-Bumpus Descendants of Edouad Bompasse of
the "Ship Fortune" and New York IGI 3/92 show that his birth date was 29 Feb 1828 (a leap year baby!).
However, the Census' for 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and even his Obituary (see below) calculate to a birth year of
1832, which as mentioned above would be after his mother Zylpha died, which appears to be 29 Jan 1830
according to the book Elijah Knapp Fuller Family Record.
I suspect that the age problem could stem from the early deaths of both parents and that perhaps whomever
became the guardian of Heman and therefore raised him, used a different birth year. It is, after all, interesting that
the birth date remained the same (29 Feb) and only the birth year seems to be in question (1828 vs. 1832). The
only other theory that I can think of is that it may have been confusing to some due to the leap year situation and
that the first 4 years were somehow skipped by Heman or his guardians when he/they found out that he was born
during a leap year. The reason that I wonder about that is that both 1828 and 1832 are, apparently, leap years.
Unless I can find more information through someone who has researched Heman's line I may never know what
the reasons are for the birth year differences.
OBITUARY:
HEMAN BUMP
An Early Pioneer and Prosperous Famer Died Last Week
The death of Heman Bump occurred at the family home in West Howell March 29, 1911, aged a little more than
79 years. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest at Howell. For
nearly fifty years Mr. Bump has been one of Livingston county's best citizens and most prosperous farmers. He
has lived an honest, upright, industrious life, respected by all who knew him or had business relations with him.
Years ago he was one of the large wheat raisers of the county and has always been prominent along farming and
business lines. The widow and an only son Horace P. Bump of Ferndale, New York survive. Mrs. Bump is 82
years old and quite feeble.
Heman Bump was born in Schoharie county, New York, Feb. 29 1832, and had just passed his 79th birthday. He
was married to Louisa Beach of Connecticut in 1858 and to this union was born one son, Horace P. Bump, now of
Ferndale, New York. After the death of his first wife he was married to Jane Porter of Orange, New Jersey in
1863 and the following year moved to Michigan settling first in Washtenaw county but three years later came to
Livingston county. Soon after he bought the Cardell farm four miles west of Howell and lived there until three
years ago when failing health led him to sell the place and buy a smaller farm of 15 acres, known as the Allen
Drew farm near Fleming. He re-built the house and has lived there since.
Mr. Bump was sick but a short time being up town only a few days before his death. He was at the Republican
