we travelled the R62 and many other road
passes, stopped at the small towns for
lunches… local is always lekka. On our
last night we stayed at the Fountain Hotel
near Cape town station to board “THE BLUE
TRAIN” the next day.
Wow, Wow we felt like kings and queens.
Rooms with bathrooms on suite, Butlers at
your service, great top class food all the time,
some people had high tea in the “Observation
cart”, glass all the way round so the view
was worth every penny. We spent time in the
smokers lounge having cognac’s and cigars.
Dressing formal for dinner just added to the
magic.
A great little treat was the complimentary
gifts we found in our rooms, a small bedside
clock, a writing pad and pen and post cards.
You could post the post cards from the
train and - yes my friend received hers. I bought a leather wallet at the
courier shop and they had a spa on board.
We arrived at Pretoria station said our goodbyes and still talk about the
great times we had. On both trips the guide was Mauritius Meiring and
the sweeper was with respect “Besem” Oom Piet De Klerk.
In December 2016 we did a solo trip, Jozi to Cape Town Route 63 Route
62, joined “THE 9 CAPE PASSES” motorbike ride on route to St Helena
bay. Cape roads just keeps us alive. We spent a few days with family
before loading the 1600 in the “VAN” and returned with the “PREMIER
CLASS TRAIN” early January 2017. All the trips were reasonably priced,
we just saved a bit beforehand and we have a rule if we get service with
a smile we tip 100% with a smile.
We last did a big trip just before lockdown and were blessed that we had
the best rides before we were ‘grounded’. We still have so many great
random pics on all the trips we have done to remind us what a great
country we have to travel by bike around.
If you get a gap, do something like this. It was awesome. The blue train
is offline for now, and it really is something that everyone needs to
experience… but the Shosholosa Meyl will not disappoint.
Shosholoza Meyl is a division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South
Africa that operates long-distance passenger rail services. It operates
various train routes across South Africa, carrying approximately 4
million passengers annually. www.shosholozameyl.co.za
Notice the little bag on top of the pillion seat, “YOU HAVE TO BRING
YOUR OWN TIE DOWNS”.
We are already planning our next trip for year-end when we can close
the studio, another long road motorbike trip beckons.
Until next time - Safe riding
