One fine summers evening, Paddy, Mick and Liam are riding home
from the building site where they work all on Paddy’s motorcycle.
As happens they get pulled over by a Bobby who says to them
“This motorcycle is only licenced to carry two people. Why are
three of you on the bike?”
“One of you will have to get off and walk!”
“Three of us?” says Paddy as he turns to Mick. “Flip! What
happened to Rory and Niall?”
Have a great riding month!
THE NEW NC750X: DO IT ALL, AND
BETTER THAN EVER.
CBR1000RR-R
Specialization may be fine for something like golf clubs, but we think great motorcycles should
be able to do it all. Case in point: The 2021 Honda NC750X. This is a bike is for motorcyclists who
appreciate both versatility and virtuosity in their adventure machines. This year, we’ve given this
model some big improvements. More power. A larger integrated storage area. Lighter weight,
and a lower seat height. Plus some huge technologic upgrades like throttle by wire, selectable
riding POWER.
modes, new instruments, a new frame, upgraded bodywork, and standard ABS. At its
heart, the twin-cylinder engine produces a broad torque curve as well, making it a joy to ride.
And you can choose from two transmissions: a conventional manual-clutch six-speed, or
Honda’s revolutionary automatic DCT. Either way, this latest NC750X is going to be the perfect
one-bike choice for the rider who wants to do it all.
Stomp Grip Tank pads – as used by 6 times World Superbike
Champion Jonathan Rea
Ever wonder how pro riders can hang so low of their bikes without falling
off, well they have extra traction… not on their tyres but on their fuel tanks.
Stompgrip’s tank grip and traction product line is made up of three product
groups: Bike Specific (customized), Universal and Tank Protectors. Between
these three product groups Stompgrip offers grip for every street bike.
They are vailable in clear or black and offered in multiple traction profiles;
Volcano, Icon, Super Volcano and Quad Plate. Universal products can easily
be “cut-to-fit” if no bike-specific grip is offered. They are custom designed
and injection-moulded specifically for power sports vehicles and are
manufactured with a proprietary plastic blend formulated to wear down like
a tyre and engineered with rounded edges to avoid snags and peeling. Each
piece is hand-cut to preserve the rounded edges. Manufactured with 3M
and Avery adhesives. Made in the U.S.A.
So! What benefits do they offer we hear you ask? They increase overall
control of the vehicle by locking knees into tanks. Improve confidence in
corners by eliminating the risk of slippage. Reduce arm pump by relieving
pressure on wrists. Prevent sliding on the seat under acceleration. Assist in
maintaining a stable body position. Stop riders and passengers from sliding
forward when braking (i.e. no nutcracker experience).
Scooter hire and 2 new bikes at PERRY BIKES KZN.
When life gets complicated, we ride...
If you’re a motorcyclist, you’ll know that there is nothing like a little
throttle therapy to get you through the rough patches. Perhaps it’s
because you’re an expert at avoiding potholes and slowing down over
speed bumps - both literally and metaphorically. Maybe it’s because you
are able to think fast in less-than-favourable situations. Or maybe it’s
just because you understand that the joy of living fully is infinitely more
rewarding than the risk.
TVS Motor Company aim for 300 new jobs in
three years with latest £100m investment in
Norton
TVS Motor Company has announced a £100m investment
into the historic Norton Motorcycles brand.
The Indian automotive giant purchased Norton in April
2020 and have already invested some of this cash
into a new manufacturing plant in Solihull, as well as
reengineering the 961 Commando and V4 SV superbike
ahead of their upcoming launches.
This month Perry Bikes got two spanking-new rrivals - the Husqvarna
Svartpilen 401 and the Suzuki Gixxer 150 Naked from.
The Svartpilen combines power, light weight and exceptional build
quality to create an unmistakably pure riding experience, and the Gixxer
150 Naked offers massive bang for your buck. In addition to the many
exciting newcomers, Perry Bikes are excited to announce that they are
now offering adventure travel enthusiasts Scooter Hire services.
Rent a reliable bike for as long as you want for a low daily price, with
the value-added option to have the bike delivered to you. For more
information or to get in touch with their team or visit www.perrybikes.
co.za or WhatsApp 084-353-2713.
“This investment will be towards electrification, cutting
edge technology, world class vehicles, manufacturing,
sustainability and the future of mobility,” Joint Managing
Director of TVS, Sudarshan Venu said. “The investments,
spread over the next few years, will result in an exciting
range of products for the global market.”
Alongside jobs at Norton, Venu went on to speak about
fresh opportunities across the motorcycle industry – with
the new investment expected to bring a further 500 to 800
indirect jobs across the supply chain.
The fresh funding was announced at the same time as
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s most recent visit to India,
which took place on April 21-22. Exactly how much of this
money has already been spent remains unavailable at this
time.
“Trade and investment between the UK and India is
creating good jobs and sustaining livelihoods in both of
our countries,” Johnson said. “I’m very pleased that TVS
Motor Company has decided to join the legions of Indian
companies investing in the UK, boosting our future mobility
sector and driving economic growth.”
Let’s hope it all works out…

A NEW GENERATION SUPERSPORT
Torquey CP2 Powerplant
Yamaha's proven 689cc liquid-cooled, inline 2-cylinder
DOHC fuel-injected CP2 engine delivers excellent power and
performance throughout the rpm range for an exhilarating
ride and a true supersport experience. Its 270-degree
crankshaft delivers linear torque for exciting acceleration
and limited vibration.
Thin Proportions for Perfect Control
All-new dimensions give the YZF-R7 the slimmest proportions
of the entire R-Series family, aiding in confident cornering
performance on the track and quick, agile direction changes
on twisty roads. The slim design also reduces wind resistance
for optimal aerodynamics, while new bodywork incorporates
the rider's body to improve the flow of air around the bike.

Where it all began: Prototype Triumph from
1901 unearthed
A veteran collector has restored the first-ever Triumph
to running order – and it’s a prototype which predates
the company’s official first production bike by a year.
It’s generally accepted that the first Triumph
motorcycle – a bicycle with a small engine fitted –
was made in 1902. But that first model was actually
preceded by a prototype in 1901, which has now been
found and faithfully restored by Triumph collector and
aficionado Dick Shepherd.
Triumph and Dick knew that the 1901 machine existed
thanks to press shots of it from the time taken at
bicycle shows but no one could pin down where it had
ended up.
“One of the tour guides at the Visitor Experience told
me that someone had been in whose friend had died
and that they had this 1901 bike,” Dick explained.
“Obviously we were a bit sceptical about the bike but
I contacted the guy and asked him a few questions
about special little parts and he had the right answers
to the questions I was asking.”
Dick was suddenly very interested but as lockdown
was in full swing and the bike was in Ireland,
he couldn’t get to see it in person. He sent a
representative in his place and confirmed that it was
the right machine, so got his cheque book out and
had it shipped back to the UK before getting to work
on the restoration.
As you would expect for a 121-year-old machine from
the vanguard of motorcycling, the operation wasn’t
always straightforward, even down to what fuel to put
in.
“We knew it wouldn’t run on modern petrol because
it doesn’t vaporise enough,” continued Dick. “A friend
of mine has an early Minerva engine push bike and he
told me to try brake cleaner. I thought he was having
a laugh but I tried it and it worked! It was running too
hot to begin with, so we had to play around with the
exhaust timing.
“The other problem was the drive belt. A lot of early
bikes used V-belts but the Triumphs used twisted cow
gut. Obviously, we couldn’t use that today so I thought
we’d use leather. We wrapped the leather around a
neoprene tube and joined it with an aluminium double
umbrella. We had to take a quarter of an inch out at a
time as we tested until we got the right tension.”
Getting the bike running was one thing but stopping
again was quite another as the push-rod cantilever
front brakes aren’t up to much.
These were swapped out by the time the 1902 bikes
hit the market, which is a good thing as the engine
had also grown from the three-quarter horsepower
unit in the 1901 to a one-and-a-quarter horsepower
unit. Still, despite its age and somewhat timid power,
it’s capable of a surprisingly brisk pace.
“I had it down at Brooklands on the banked circuit,”
added Dick, “and someone noticed I was going pretty
quick. We’re pretty sure it’ll do 30mph.”
How cool is that?

Gibson and Triumph Motorcycles team up
for the DGR
Two iconic brands join forces for the Distinguished
Gentleman’s Ride as Triumph Motorcycles and Gibson
announce 1959 Legends Custom Edition bike and
guitar
THE motorcycle and the electric guitar both hold
a special place in the social subconscious of
generations of people, across the entire globe. Both
have a rebellious nature about them, and one that
in the 40s and 50s, most parents would rather their
offspring didn’t explore.
In the modern world, that rebellious spirit has never
gone away, it’s just that most of the rebels are older,
sometimes wiser, and quite possibly with more
disposable income to play with then when they were
in their teens! It’s that group that Triumph and Gibson
are looking to tap into, as the two giants in their
respective fields set about raising money for men’s
health through the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride
(DGR).
Gibson and Triumph 1959 Legends Custom Editions
To help the much-loved charity raise some muchneeded
cash, the two are making a one-of-a-kind
reissue of their most iconic models. Gibson with a
special edition 1959 Les Paul Standard, and Triumph
with Triumph Bonneville 1959 Legends Custom
Edition.
Indian - the face of American
performance…
One hundred and seventy-seven mph. That was
Jeremy McWilliams’ top speed as he fired up the
banking at the Daytona on his way to taking the
top spot at the King of the Baggers. A few seconds
quicker and that great big piece of American muscle
would be fast enough to qualify for a spot in the
proper superbike races of AMA.
Cast your eye across the Indian range these days,
you’ll see the tassles and 3000rpm red lines are gone,
replaced with bikes producing in excess of 100bhp,
shod with sticky tyres and sat on Öhlins suspension.
With its 17in wheels the FTR is now challenging
more typical performance nakeds while the latest
Pursuit mega tourer has radial Brembos, electronic
suspension and more computers than you know what
to do with.
Believe it or not, this was Indian’s plan all along.
Indian motorcycles are imported by Tuning Fork in SA.
More news on this lot soon…

Aston Martin
Begins Deliveries of AMB 001 Superbike
After two and a half years of waiting, Aston Martin has finally begun
deliveries of their track-child, the AMB 001 superbike – and apparently,
ten of the original batch are still available.
Created in collaboration with Brough Superior, the AMB 001 is a limited-run
beastie that first reared its head at Eicma 2019.
It punches out the same numerics in pony-pull as it boasted weight in
kilos.
With 180 (now 183) horses kicking out of a 180kg V-Twin motorcycle,
you can imagine the fun scoot this unit will be…especially considering
that the bike’s delay in production gave Martin Superior a bit of extra
time to run a few final tests before unleashing the carbon-clad machine
on the community.
“We are happy to have met our performance targets, with a power
output of 183 hp and a dry weight of 408 pounds,” enthuses Brough
Superior’s president, Thierry Henriette.
“AMB 001 is an original track bike that stirs the senses and delivers
on performance…the characteristic whistle of the turbo completes the
unique presence of this extraordinary motorcycle.”
With three lucky customers now in possession of their $108,000 AMB
001 and ten of the original 100 unit batch still needing a discerining
collector to lay some cash out, it’s in demand…
If you do buy one, please can we take a little ride…

ALL THE BOXES…
TICKING
Triumphs Tiger 660 Sport.
Priced from R169000.00
You saw the preview on this one in previous issues, the bikes are in SA and we got to ride one. We’ve said it
before… Triumph really does have a bike for everyone.
Let’s go back a little to the Triumph 660 Trident, a bike that Triumph aimed squarely at young, up and coming riders. A bike with a
lekker engine, simple electronics and lots of street attitude. And we have ridden the wheels off that one… you can check it out in
our April issue. But as much fun as that little naked is, it has its limitations in terms of comfort and distance travel…
So Triumph went off to the drawing board, took the base Trident and turned it into a Sports Tourer. And, in our opinion, they flippen
nailed it. The Tiger Sport 660 has longer suspension, wider bars, a larger tank, and an upper fairing to take the edge off that long
ride. Just on the ride from the shop to our base on the East Rand, we became enamored… and here are the reasons why.

•Comfortable. Very comfy with a cool little adjustable screen that keeps
the elements at bay. Ergonomics for riders of all sizes feel really good.
The wide seat is roomy and comfortable, and the seat/tank interface is
perfectly designed for a good grip by your knees. The seat is firm, wellshaped
and there’s plenty of room to shift around.
•Peppy. Nippy. Never lacking in the power department. On the JHB
freeways, you are zipping along at speeds in excess of 140 without even
trying. Our faster riders saw 220KPH at the top.
•Smooth. Like only a triple can be.
•Brakes and handling. No issues for a bike of this size it is
unpretentious and does everything you ask of it without any fuss.
•Two rider modes, switchable traction control and ABS. That’s it! We
love the simplicity, but… no cruise control on a motorcycle aimed at the
sport-touring crowd, that’s a bit strange… maybe to keep costs within
reach of everybody.
And those were just first impressions. The bike needed to be ridden
further, so we took off for a day of urban touring, fast freeways and
back roads out to the famous Stasie lunch stop in Cullinan. We are very
happy to see that is one spot that is still doing well. We rode the bike
through urban centers and there is always enough pep to drill the fancy
Beemers from the traffic lights. We took on the highways in peak hour
traffic because the Triumph is narrow and nimble we avoided leaving
gashes along the side of the cars and then we hit some of our favorite
twisty country roads, and that’s where this bike really shines.
The neutral handling is excellent. Even with the longer suspension
travel, we were happy to find the Tiger Sport 660 really nimble. It’s not
sport-bike nimble, but it’s willing to change direction without a lot of
muscle should you need to correct your line in a turn. In a straight-line
speed test, the Tiger happily romped into triple digits with aplomb.
Nearly six inches of wheel travel, front and back, provides plenty of
room for the suspension to soak up the bumps and lumps of our
potholed streets and freeway expansion joints. Triumph has tuned the
41mm inverted fork and linkage-assisted shock to perform well in tight
stuff as well as on the freeways.
The only adjustment you can make is shock
spring-preload to accommodate luggage and/or
a passenger.
The triple delivers 80 horsepower at 10,250 rpm
and it is smooth from bottom to top. The inline-3
is a lot of fun, smooth with no hitches anywhere
in the power band. It’s easy to get going faster
than the national speed limit allows. Overtaking
at freeway speeds doesn’t require downshifting
the six-speed transmission, there’s enough to
just roll on the throttle. The Tiger Sport 660 also
has a slip-and assist-clutch which keeps the
clutch pull light and helps prevent rear-wheel
hop should you downshift a bit too aggressively.
She simply sings along with the rider in absolute
comfort. But don’t be fooled, the corners are fun
and if you are in the mood, there is more than
enough torque to pop a little wheelie every once
in a while…
The bike has a sensible almost 18 litre tank. On
our trip of 175KMs, we used exactly 10.5 litres.
And that wasn’t slouching along… so you can
bank on 300 KM’s to a full tank.

We gave the bike to singer/songwriter Garth Taylor and asked for his
opinion:
I first saw this motorcycle at the Triumph showroom in Sandton and
it was truly love at first sight. Walking up to have a closer inspection
the feelings just got stronger and at the same time I was disappointed
that I wasn’t able to take it for a ride as they had literally just landed.
Fast forward a few weeks, I was asked to test ride one the next day, so
naturally I cleared my schedule!
The demo I was given, with its Korosi red and graphite finish, custom
spots and indicators, looked nothing short of impressive. I sat on
the bike and immediately felt at home with its ride height, handlebar
position and foot-peg placement. I felt the space/dashboard behind the
windshield a little bit bare but maybe that’s on purpose to give the rider
space to add all their gadgets. The clocks were very modern and with
its user friendly interface, I quickly learnt where to turn off the traction
control… lol. The seat was really comfy at first and later on that day I
was very pleased that I didn’t lose feeling in my bum.
One of my deal breakers is how a fuel tank feels and looks between my
legs and this bikes tank ticked the box for me, nice and big with curves
in all the right places. I liked that the rear suspension had a user friendly
adjustment thingy, in case you wanted to put someone on the back.
This ride saw us heading out into the countryside which was great
because I got to experience a variety of road surfaces. Heading out of
the suburbs I felt confident surprisingly soon. I’m naturally cautious
with each new bike I test but the Tiger Sport put my mind at ease with
its pulling and stopping power. Its superb handling also made it easy
to avoid those pesky potholes. I noticed right away that the windshield
wobbled/shook a little bit but found out later that this was attributed to
the fact that you can adjust the height … on the fly! I experimented with
the windshield until I found the perfect position at about halfway up,
which limited the wind factor and made the bike quite comfortable to
ride at higher speeds.
The brake pedal felt a little bit weird for me, as if the wasn’t enough
room for my foot but maybe it was just my boots.
Once we hit the open road, I was able to shift into higher gears which
was quite easy with a soft yet firm clutch and very sturdy gearbox.
I felt the engine, very similar to the Tridents engine, yet had a different
power delivery to the Trident… compromising the low end slightly
to make the top end more responsive which I feel is a clever move
considering I would use this bike for longer journeys. Overtaking at high
speeds was excellent with loads of cheeky power to get me around the
trucks without feeling anxious about oncoming traffic.
After about 40 minutes we found ourselves on windy country roads
which is where I had the most fun. It was like riding a 660cc mountain
bike to be honest, as I was able to literally throw the bike around a corner
as if it was on rails. It felt as though the bike was prepared especially
for my weight. I was well impressed with the suspension setup and with
minimal chassis movement and I was very confident that if I needed to, I
could get out of trouble without bailing. With the bumpy country roads, I
found myself airborne a few times and the bike didn’t even flinch.
In summary, I would throw a set of 80/20 tires on, paniers and a pillion
and ride this bike around the country. This Triumph 660 Tiger Sport is a
great choice that boxes well above its weight!
Proof that you don’t need a big capacity bike to get out there and have a
great time!
Naughty…
BUT oh so nice
It’s been a while since we got to ride KTM’s 890 Duke.
We made a call, asked for a ride and kept the bike for a week…
Ever since KTM built their parallel twin engine, they have been
churning out some great models – and the 890 Duke is one of
those.
The 890 engine started as a 790. That was bored and stroked,
bringing capacity from 799cc to 890cc and the compression ratio
was also increased. Power went up from 105bhp to 119bhp.
And to be quite frank – those changes made a huge difference – it’s
like a new bike.
The 890 engine is refined, punchy, full of personality and proof that you
don’t need massive gobs of power to have great fun every time you ride.
Thanks largely to that compact, feisty 890cc fuel injected parallel twin,
the bike feels narrow when you climb on to the saddle. The wide, adjustable
bars are positioned fairly aggressively, but it’s a lot less fatigue
inducing than your average superbike. Sporty but not overly so.
The rear sets are back a bit, giving this bike a sporty rider triangle. You
can either sit bolt upright or throw your elbows out and get low.
A great big TFT display tells you everything you need to know – and all
of the electronic bits like shuffling between ride modes and all that are
really simple to operate.

kt kRA
Hit the starter and the engine burbles to life. From the
moment you hit the starter and hear the 75-degree
offset with a 475-degree firing interval’s bass-laden
bark, you know you’re in for a good time. That standard
pipe is damn sexy! Many of the manufacturers
opt for these huge heavy cannisters to meet emission
laws. KTM managed it while keeping the pipe compact
and good looking. Perhaps to their detriment…
We might not even change it if we owned one.
Then it drips with lekker stuff like a top-shelf electronics
package derived from the mighty 1290 Super
Duke R. A 6-axis Bosch IMU supports cornering ABS,
lean-angle-detecting traction control and wheelie
control. Cruise control is an optional extra. This one
had it.
Superbike-spec dual Brembo Stylema calipers and
larger 320mm rotors take care of braking duties up
front, while a single Brembo caliper clamps onto a
240mm rotor in the rear. Stopping power and feel
is impeccable, even when trailing into corners. The
Brembo MCS lever is seriously trick. It features ratio
adjustment settings, letting you dial in brake feel, not
just distance from the grip; keep it sharp for the track
or soften it up for street use.
To help manage the 890’s horsepower, KTM upgraded
their 43mm WP Apex fork with compression and
rebound damping adjustment and a fully adjustable
WP shock out back.

The Duke R weighs in at mere 184
KG’s wet, so not only does it feel light
and nimble, it actually is.
It’s light, perky and fitted with sticky
Michelin Power Cup 2 tyres and beautifully
set-up WP suspension it handles
and rides more like a sportsbike
than a naked. We hauled her along
on a breakfast run and used her all
around GP to call on customers and
generally terrorise the spietcops.
Yup! It’s that kind of bike. Go and ride
it for yourself.
Just… we fear that you will get lots of
fines. You see, it’s one of those bikes
that you simply have to ride fast. Just
look at it. Even at a standstill you can
see the wheel hoiking up into the air.
And it’s fun. Generally parallel twins
tend to be all civilized like, but in
typical KTM fashion you can feel
the ready to race genes coming out
- especially when you engage that
sports mode…
Would we park one in the garage?
As an everyday fun to ride bike – absolutely!
Longer trips will be interesting,
but that’s why they also give you
the 890 ADV. You just need to know
how to ask your bank manager nicely
for some extra cash!
FMCR9TSTORM
FMC cloaks a R9T to create a Storm.
Proudly South African!
Wayne Buys, who hails from Gqeberha, which is near
Port Elizabeth was commissioned by a client to build an
aircraft inspired, fully shrouded R9T.
The talented Jeff Latham got the pics.

How cool is this?
All parts are one of a kind, handmade from aluminium and stainless
steel.
The hydraulic master cylinders are mounted under the tank, controlled
via cables by reverse levers. Clutch, brake, throttle cable and wiring
are all hidden in the bars. The rear brake master cylinder is modified to
function inboard.
To achieve the bottom silhouette, the exhaust is contained in front of
the engine, exiting on the bottom on either side.
For engine cooling purpose the hot air is vented through multiple holes
on the bottom of the panels , with one in front of the rear wheel.
There are also vents on top of the tank to prevent hot air from pooling
inside the fairing, which adds up to double the outlet vs. inlet area.
The Oil cooler is moved to rear of the left foot peg, enclosed in an inlet
scoop.
A 5” fan is added and ducted to vent out the bottom in order to aid in
cooling.
All electrical components are shrouded and fed cold air from around
headlight, via a ducted fan, keeping a positive pressure and preventing
hot air from entering. The suspension and motor is all standard R9T.
And yes – you can ride it. It is not just a showpiece.
This once-off special is up for sale. Interested? Or looking for some
bespoke custom work?
The Shosholosa Meyl… A pillions perspective.
By Rob & Barbara Frew
Through the eyes of a Pillion …
On a train bound for nowhere…
We were both too tired to sleep
Our regular contributor, Mrs Barbara Frew – “Through the eyes of a
Pillion” – sent us this really great feature on some train trips they have
done with motorcycles. All the luxury, comfort and views from a train
with the excitement of riding some of the best roads in SA without the
long, tedious slog along the freeways to get to said roads. It’s a great
holiday…
She says:
Boarding the train with a small overnight bag, motorbike all tied up in
the “VAN” is an experience of a lifetime …
It’s even a bit of an expedition. Sadly, these are now only fond memories
from the past as JB TOURS is no longer, (They were masters of great
train trips), and Her Majesty “THE BLUE TRAIN” which also made news
recently is also not currently operating. Check their website:
“Travel on South Africa’s luxury Blue Train, which connects Cape Town
to Pretoria in two days, has been suspended until further notice after
several incidents including a derailment. In November, the train derailed
at the exit of a station located about 20 kilometres from Johannesburg.
It was not carrying any passengers and the accident did not cause any
injuries. A wagon being repaired in a depot near the capital was hit by
a fire. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire,
while a person apprehended by the security service was handed over
to the police – News 24 – “As a precautionary measure following the
recent incidents involving the Blue Train, management has taken the
decision to temporarily suspend operations while the train undergoes a
thorough technical assessment,” South Africa’s state-owned transport
company, Transnet, said in a statement. – News 24”
A few years back we were part of group that booked “THE PREMIER
CLASS” train from Park Station in JHB to Cape Town station and back
for a week exploring and riding Cape’s many road passes. Out of
season, good weather and good company. Everything on the train was
100%, great food, clean compartments, (they supplied white gowns and
disposable slippers to go to the bathrooms), hot showers and friendly
staff. We are still in contact with one of those original riders today.
Just before hard lockdown, we met up with a group of bikers at Park
station. Again we got the bikes loaded and tied up in the “VAN”,
overnight bag in hand to board the “SHOSHOLOZA MEYL TRAIN”.
No complaints - what you see is what you get. We were humbled to
say we had good food, clean linen for our compartments; the staff was
super friendly and we met awesome people.
We had a week out of season, weather was absolutely perfect and
we travelled the R62 and many other road
passes, stopped at the small towns for
lunches… local is always lekka. On our
last night we stayed at the Fountain Hotel
near Cape town station to board “THE BLUE
TRAIN” the next day.
Wow, Wow we felt like kings and queens.
Rooms with bathrooms on suite, Butlers at
your service, great top class food all the time,
some people had high tea in the “Observation
cart”, glass all the way round so the view
was worth every penny. We spent time in the
smokers lounge having cognac’s and cigars.
Dressing formal for dinner just added to the
magic.
A great little treat was the complimentary
gifts we found in our rooms, a small bedside
clock, a writing pad and pen and post cards.
You could post the post cards from the
train and - yes my friend received hers. I bought a leather wallet at the
courier shop and they had a spa on board.
We arrived at Pretoria station said our goodbyes and still talk about the
great times we had. On both trips the guide was Mauritius Meiring and
the sweeper was with respect “Besem” Oom Piet De Klerk.
In December 2016 we did a solo trip, Jozi to Cape Town Route 63 Route
62, joined “THE 9 CAPE PASSES” motorbike ride on route to St Helena
bay. Cape roads just keeps us alive. We spent a few days with family
before loading the 1600 in the “VAN” and returned with the “PREMIER
CLASS TRAIN” early January 2017. All the trips were reasonably priced,
we just saved a bit beforehand and we have a rule if we get service with
a smile we tip 100% with a smile.
We last did a big trip just before lockdown and were blessed that we had
the best rides before we were ‘grounded’. We still have so many great
random pics on all the trips we have done to remind us what a great
country we have to travel by bike around.
If you get a gap, do something like this. It was awesome. The blue train
is offline for now, and it really is something that everyone needs to
experience… but the Shosholosa Meyl will not disappoint.
Shosholoza Meyl is a division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South
Africa that operates long-distance passenger rail services. It operates
various train routes across South Africa, carrying approximately 4
million passengers annually. www.shosholozameyl.co.za
We are already planning our next trip for year-end when we can close
the studio, another long road motorbike trip beckons.
MOTORRAD WORLD OF CARBON
NICOLE
VAN ASWEGEN

Moto2 crash chaos:
rules are rules, but does
that mean they are right?
There was some strange go-kart race happening in Italy during
the Portuguese Round of MotoGP, and they had the nerve to
hold their little race at the time MotoGP usually is on. Being the
kind souls that bikers are, the MotoGP organisers moved the
schedule around so that the MotoGP race came after Moto3 and
before Moto2. Of course, most people stopped watching after
the main race, either to carry on with their Sundays or to watch
a Dutchman lap an Englishman in the Italian go-karts.
They missed quite a show.
Water droplets and their secrecy
The race evolved to a thrilling six-way battle for the lead, made
all the more interesting because drops of water were falling
throughout.
For a rider, scenarios like this are especially tricky. Rain is rain
and you know what’s coming on a fully wet track. The same is
true for a completely dry track, but little spots on the visor create
a quandary.
Water on the track becomes a problem only when it starts
creating a layer between the tyres and the tar. On the other hand,
a few light drops are almost unnoticeable, and the riders can
carry at full tilt.

That’s precisely what they were doing in a race that had the
makings of something great. Riders were going elbow to
elbow and elbow to the ground in full battle mode, even as
drops on their visors remained.
The problem comes when it starts a bit raining harder. A full
downpour is obvious but a slight increase in drops – not
enough to completely drench the circuit but just enough to
build a wet layer – is not. Especially when it starts at only one
corner of the circuit.
At Portimao, that just happened to be Turn Two, a third gear,
flat-out kink. Canet led, followed by a hauling Beaubier, Ogura
and three gallant others. They plunged into Turn One, tails
wagging as they clamped on the brakes, before accelerating
hard into Two.
There was no warning at all – the drops on the visors at Turn
Two looked just like the drops at Turn One until their bikes
were suddenly pointing in the wrong direction.
The top six bikes went tumbling, followed by another five
more. Riders, scrambling desperately to their feet, scattered
as bikes came flying in every direction. There was even a
fireball.
Eventually, race direction called for a red flag and the chaos
ended.
The rules
A red flag means the race will be restarted and run again in
a shortened version, a problem that became immediately
apparent to the bewildered riders once the gravel trap dust
had settled. Many of them scrambled to get their bent
motorcycles moving again with the hope of returning them to
pitlane in time for the mechanics to roll out the duct tape and
zip ties to be race-ready in time.
Some of them did get back, and some even managed to
get something close to a functioning motorcycle before the
restart, but none of the 11 riders involved in the pile-up were
allowed to line up for part two of the race.
There’s a rule that states that riders have five minutes to
return to the pitlane after a red flag is shown. More so, riders
have to return to the pitlane by riding their bikes around the
track and into the pitlane entrance with no shortcuts.
Problematically, all the 11 that crashed either missed the
five-minute window or had their bikes returned to the pits via
a trailer.
Naturally, these riders and their teams were quite upset with
this turn of events. Team managers swamped Race Direction
with pleas and bargains but, as they say, rules are rules, and
the decision was final.
The right rules
The Five-Minute Rule was introduced so riders involved in an
accident that caused a red flag don’t spend five hours getting
their bikes back only to return to the restart unpunished. That
rule seems fair given that when somebody crashes, that’s
usually the end of the race for that person.
An old trick crashers used to do was lie still in the gravel
trap until the organisers called out the red flag, thinking
ambulances and helicopters needed to be deployed. The
moment the red started waving, said rider would make a
miraculous recovery and rejoin the restart. At least this way,
offenders would have a long way to push in a hurry.
Did this need really apply here, though?

If riders had hit the deck because they were
a little overeager, then fair enough. But this
pile-up wasn’t that; it was riders caught out by
the weather.
Some might argue that not everyone crashed,
and those riders who stay upright should be
rewarded. That would generally be true, but
most of the non-fallers saw the chaos ahead
of them and slowed down or slowed down
for the red flag. Essentially, the riders that
crashed played martyr to those that didn’t.
Then they have the argument for Bad Luck. Indeed
it is a good argument because Bad Luck
does happen – a rider could have a technical
fault, or slip on oil caused by a rider with a
technical fault, or get hit by a rider with a brain
fault; either way, this is legitimate Bad Luck.
Where I have a problem is when the rules say
Bad Luck. That sort of defeats the purpose of
rules – to keep things safe and fair. How does
stopping riders who were the victims of Bad
Luck from restarting make things safer and
fairer?
However, rules are rules. They have to be
enforced. Right?
Russian soldiers are shooting innocent people
in the Ukraine because their rules say they
have to. Rules are rules, but that doesn’t make
it right.
Every rule in the MotoGP rule book should be
subjected to the clause: “or under the stewards’
discretion.”
If that were the case, we could be assured that
more than just 19 riders made it to the restart.
And the world would be a better place.
Making America great again
With that, we should make an honorary mention
of the eventual race winner, Joe Roberts.
His first GP win will go down in history with an
asterisk on it but I’m glad an American won.
Things in America are bigger and better. If
you don’t believe that, consider this – in 2007,
Casey Stoner became MotoGP Champion and
therefore was declared the best rider in the
world’s premier motorcycle racing class. That
year, though, he was just the third highest-paid
Australian motorcycle racer globally. Second
was Matt Mladin, who won the AMA Superbike
Championship in America and the biggest
Australian motorcycle earner of 2007 was
Chad Reed, who raced in the AMA Supercross
Championship in America.
Think about that for a second – two guys
racing in domestic championships cashed in
more than the world champion of the premier
motorcycle championship. Welcome to
America.
It would be great if more Americans won; more
American winners means more American
viewers and, therefore, more American money
making the sport we love bigger and better.
Next time, hopefully, he can win against a full
grid without bureaucracy.

KAWASAKI
NINJA
1000 SX
Looking for a fast bike that’s fast, fun to ride and comfortable?
Then best you go and have a look at Kawasaki’s Ninja
1000 SX…
The word Ninja has been written on a bevy of Kawasaki’s
finest bikes. This latest model befits that title…
SX. Think SX and your mind wanders off the supercharged
H2 version of that Z1000SX that we love so much. Not so
in this case. Think Sports tourer, just a damn fast one.
A few months ago, we saw a green one lurking at the Kawasaki
headquarters and asked for a ride… No luck, that one
was sold. Then along came this one – and that was sent to
another bunch first… Anyway we waited patiently and then
they gave us the bike for a full week and we used it every
day that it did not tsunami in GP and fell in complete lust.
Balanced:
Balanced is such a middling word to use when you do a
review on a bike, but this SX epitomizes that expression.
Performance bikes are so lekker but often, well almost always,
comfort becomes an issue. Kawasaki has very cleverly
integrated the two. This SX is as fast as you like, topping
out at the 245KPH mark. And it’s just so comfortable. A
real-world, user friendly bike that you can pop your nearest
and dearest on the back and go touring. A comfortable bike
for everyday use. And a bike, that should the need arise you
can thrash with a huge grin.

Inline fours can often be wild… the Ninja 1000SX’s motor wont rip your
arms out like their ZX10-R or H2. It has been tuned to be easier, more
useful, more forgiving and a more practical engine on the road. This one
comes with a fat, flat torque curve, lots of midrange, and close ratios
giving the bike so much practical flexibility. Kawasaki has packed it
with all the good stuff. You are given two power modes: “Full”, which
delivers exactly that; and “Low”, which has a milder response and limits
output to 75% (105bhp). You get three levels of traction control and four
riding modes: Sport, Road, Rain and your preferred custom rider setting.
And… Oh Yes! Cornering ABS takes over if you happen to get it wrong.
The Ninja comes some hi-tech features, including cruise control, a
two-way quick shifter which is one of the smoothest that we have ever
felt and a neat colour TFT dash. Bluetooth connectivity and Kawasaki
Rideology. Using the RIDEOLOGY THE APP smartphone application, you
can do three key functions:
• View vehicle information and check the latest status of your
vehicle.
• Keep a detailed riding log that can be played back for review.
You can also view riding route, distance and time traveled.
• Easily change vehicle settings before riding such as Ride
Mode and Electronic Suspension.
All come fitted as standard, not accessories or options that cost extra.
Cool huh!
“Go round and do it again!”
That’s Stefan our photographers favourite phrase. On the hottest day in
Gauteng in some of the gnarliest traffic on the road she didn’t get hot
once and there was no uncomfortable heat transmitted to the rider, even
with all the stop/starting, u-turns and dodging traffic. So comfortable,
Kawasaki has done a great job at making a bike with the correct foot to
bum to arms ratio for riders of all sizes. Ride her to The Cape, you’ll be
smiling. Even the little screen is a marvel, it flings the air well over the
pilots head. Go slowly, she ploughs along through the traffic and never
misses a beat. Ride Fast… well open the throttle and she howls along.

The difference between sports mode and road mode are significant.
On the open roads you can sit in just about any of the top 3 gears
and it all feels equally natural. In top, you can drop your speeds and
she still pulls cleanly. If you open wide, the dash flashes at you from
6000RPM, (but you can change that on Rideology… which we did), and
she hauls ass to the 11,000rpm mark and delivers a claimed 140bhp
which, for a bike like this is more than plenty.
Stop in a hurry and the powerful Tokico brakes are well up to the task.
The suspension handles all of it and offers a sublimely smooth ride.
There’s plenty of stable support from the front while stopping sharply,
no fuss when cornering or accelerating hard, and a really pleasant,
smooth ride.
So… Are we gushing? Yup. A little bit. This is a real world motorcycle
– fast, smooth and comfortable. And quite refreshing after riding so
many big twins and triples. A Jap 4 cylinder is still a marvelous thing.
Everyone should ride one.
Sean says:
This SX is a piece of work. I rushed back to the office after testing a
boxer engine adventure bike and jumped off the flat twin onto the SX
and hauled arse to the south of Jo’Burg to another photo shoot still
in my adventure kit and helmet… Eish, these short weeks do make
our lives interesting. This is the first road bike that I have ever felt
immediately comfortable and at home from the word GO. Everything
is just so ergonomically perfect, usually it takes me a minute or two to
find the most comfortable sitting position and work out where all the
buttons and switches are, with the SX everything is where you would
instinctively look for it and accessing the various modes and etcetera
was just as natural and instinctive. The screen is not the biggest or
fanciest on the market, but it is easy to read and to navigate around
and gives you all the information you want and need and even some
you didn’t know you needed. The sitting position is comfortable with a
bit of a sporty forward lean bias which makes you want to go looking
for corners.

Handling is really superb for a longer wheel base sports tourer type bike,
I was expecting the bike to be a little bit cumbersome dodging traffic but
actually found her quite nimble and very responsive on the throttle in
any gear. The torque is perfect for plodding along at ‘legal’ speeds, but
get the SX over 6,000rpm and it really comes alive, blurring the scenery
around you and howling like some otherworldly demon. Tilting into
Gilooly’s during evening rush hour some Tosser in a car was so focused
on his cell phone that he drifted right across the lanes nearly wiping me
out into one of those scary looking cable barriers. I didn’t have time to
hit the hooter and started revving like a maniac, the useless chop nearly
jumped into his passenger seat as he swerved back into his own lane,
so even though the 1000SX is quiet and polite most of the time it can
get quite loud and angry… which possibly saved my life.
Now, having jumped off an adventure bike and still in my adventure kit,
boots and helmets included I was fully expecting my chunky off road
boots to be a hinderance on the brake pedal and gear lever and my
peaked helmet to fatigue my neck. In both instances I was pleasantly
surprised, there was plenty of space in and around the levers for my
boots and easy, comfortable and precise operation and the wind protection
from the fairing and small screen negated my concerns about
my adventure lid and the wind, so much so that I eventually tucked in
behind the screen and pushed hard toward the tunnel interchange from
the R59 onto the N12. Tilting hard into the fluorescent lit tunnel at twilight
at speed and dodging tail lights on this bike should have been a bit
sphincter tightening, but the SX is just that well balanced, smooth and
stable that I actually started getting really irresponsible in the traffic and
had to quickly dial it back a notch or two before I made kak that even
WE LOVE THE SMELL
OF 2 STROKE IN THE MORNING…
On a warm Saturday when we had a small window of sun through all the
rain a bunch of enthusiastic 2 stroke road bike owners descended on
Redstar Raceway for an impromptu track day to shake out the cobwebs
and fill the surrounding plains with the howl of the sweetest music.
We got word of this gathering from our mate Neil of PW Parts, (a dyed
in the wool 2 stroke enthusiast), and time slowed down as we waited for
the days to dawdle by before we could experience this bit of heaven.
This wasn’t any formal Festival of 2 Smoke or a show or anything, just a
bunch of guys and girls getting together to enjoy each other’s bikes and
the sounds and smells of 2 stroke power going hell for leather around a
race track.
Walking around the pits watching owners, riders and the like fettling
carburettors, kicking their mealies off and eventually trying to run-bump
start bikes because the carbs were all gumfed up with old petrol and 2
stroke mix from standing brought back many nostalgic memories. But
once everybody got going we inhaled deeply and enjoyed the music.
Yamaha TZR’s, Suzuki RGV’s, Kawasaki KR-1’s, a very, very special 1 of
a few in the world Honda NS400R, Aprilia RS’s and a bevy of beautifully
restored classic 2 strokes and some wildly customised 420 stroked
Banshee engine RD’s and RZ 350’s all beautifully turned out and in tiptop
condition.
Young and old alike were grinning from ear to ear, breathing deeply and
exhaling in long satisfied sighs…
It’s been way too long since a race track sounded and smelled this
good.
We bumped into some old friends and met new friends and found some
really interesting bikes and heard some great stories.
We met with Hanri Oberholzer and chatted to her about her TZR250.
Incidentally, you might find her and her hubby Wayne’s names elsewhere
in this magazine, they are the organisers of the Budget Racing Series
out at Midvaal….
“I ride a Yamaha TZR250 3XV named Little Red Riding Hood. Riding
and racing 2 Strokes is a passion as these bikes are so temperamental,
sometimes I think half temper half mental...”
“Riding a four stroke is a completely different ball game and no matter
the amount of power, it doesn’t put the same smile on my face nor fills

my cup the same way a 2T does. The smell of the 2
stroke oil, the moment the powerband kicks in, the
sound of that engine on song, it’s all just sweet, sweet
music to my ears. What an honour and privilege to
still be able to keep these classic machines in great
running condition and race them. For this I am truly
grateful and count my blessings every day. Being
confident in a 30 year plus old 2-stroke on track is
huge and I have my hubby Wayne to thank for this, as
he is a magician with these 2T engines. We share the
same passion, so when it comes to engine rebuilding
and tuning on our dyno, I am really blessed with the
best. My all-time favourite 2T machine is a Yamaha
YZR500 and one day when I’m big, I am going to have
one…”
“We have a few 2 Strokes, Wayne doesn’t race, he
races a car but he does ride on social days at the
track.”

From custom…
Our mate Neil introduced us to one of his mates with
wildly modified Yamaha 350.
We hooked up with them a few days later to have
a closer look… Gareth Evans has a very special,
essentially a one off motorcycle.
We went down to Alberton expecting to find a restored
or well-looked after Yamaha RD or RZ 350 but on closer
inspection it was something much more special than
that. The only original Yamaha bits about it were the
brand new 350 Banshee engine casings and the two
38mm Keihin carburettors off Yamaha’s 2-Stroke dirt
bikes, the rest was all either all custom designed and
fabricated or special performance after-market bits
bolted to a very highly modifies Aprilia RS250 chassis.
Gareth is a ticketed Fitter and Turner as well as a
highly qualified Mechanical Engineer and designed and
fabricated most of the parts himself to very exacting
standards. Here are just some of the modifications/
improvements/upgrades that were done.
The chassis and swing-arm started life on an Aprilia
RS250 and were then improved to take the Banshee
motor and the WSBK spec Ohlins suspension. Gareth
redesigned the sub-frame on CAD and built it in his
fully kitted out engineering workshop in his garage.
(You have to see this place… lathes, milling machines,
every kind of welder… you name it Gareth has it in there
neatly in the corner sharing floor space with several
highly modified cars, SUV’s and a collection of scooters
and motorcycles).
Gareth is a perfectionist of note and did not like
the casting and forging marks on the chassis and
swing arm and thus over a hundred hours were spent
machining and sanding them off to a perfectly smooth
finish.
No refurbished engine was used as a platform,
everything is brand new from the new Banshee casing,
Wossner Forged pistons, Billet 4mm stroker crank,
custom designed and fabricated intakes, V-Force 4
reeds valves all eventually forming the 421cc Stroker
Yamaha based engine.
Bolted to that are the fully imported custom made JL
Performance expansion boxes and exhaust from Jim
Lomas.
The whole works together to kick out an estimated
100BHP.
This bike was built for speed, lots of speed so
uppermost in Gareth’s mind was weight and how to
get rid of as much of it as possible. With that in mind
everything had to either be full Kevlar/carbon fibre,
7075 aluminium or titanium. The entire bike tips the
scales at about 100 or so kg’s, about a 1:1 power to
weight ration.
The fuel tank, based off the Aprilia original is full
carbon fibre with a modified aluminium Rizoma filler
cap and a custom breather. The tank weighs a mere
1.1kg’s.
The custom carbon fibre tailpiece weighs just 700
grams or so and both are finished to the highest
standard - even the out of sight bottom of the fuel tank
and tail piece are finished off as good as the tops.

The front mudguard is an OE upgrade carbon job from a 1299 Panigale
to fit the Ohlins WSBK spec forks and carbon BST front wheel. Both rims
are custom made without lips on the edge to keep smooth, clean, flowing
lines. The rear shock is an Ohlins TTX 36 with custom designed and
fabricated 7075 ally linkage and clevis all bolted together with titanium
bolts and nuts.
In fact each and every bolt and nut on this bike is titanium.
The rear axle and swing arm pivot are 7075 Ally. The rear sprocket is a 42
tooth Renthal unit The front sprocket is a custom modified off set Yamaha
17 tooth unit using titanium grub screw in place of the standard fold over
washer to lock it all in place. Notice the absolute attention to detail on
even the smallest of details.
Rear sets are by TIGA with some custom fabricated bits. The motor
torsion rods/linkages are also full custom 7075 ally. Top and bottom triple
clamps are loosely based on the RS250 originals but fully redesigned on
CAD by Gareth with a custom trail and hollow bits for weight saving then
fabricated in his garage engineering workshop.
Most of this this bike is once off. From the wiring loom built from avionic
grade wiring and fittings, the custom 7075 aluminium front brake splitter,
the custom cable splitter to the carbs (which are two YZ250 carbs), the
plastic chain sliders and guides – which every RS250 owners knows are
almost non-existent from Aprilia – the modified KTM kick starter, the
radiator by H2O works in Italy, the oversized water pump,
custom 7075 carb over flow collector bowl with bleed nipple, steel braided
brake lines and even the custom paddock and custom starter built from…
you guessed it, 7075 billet ally and a Metabo angle grinder.
Three years and conservatively around 1,000 labour hours later and this
once off absolute work of art is something to behold.
Firing this beauty into life is a bit of a process, firstly no fuel is left in the
bike when it is parked.
It runs on a 50/50 mixture of Methanol and Avgas and ELF 2 stroke
costing around R1k per litre.
So it first has to be fuelled up, and then properly warmed up before taking
off. Cranking open and tearing down his local neighbourhood street on
the back wheel had the neighbours running onto the pavement, hanging
over walls and fences.
This little beast howls like a GP bike at full thrash, whips up on its back
wheel and hurtles off into the distance like a cat with Deep Heat on its
butt….
What a machine!
An absolute once off work of art…
The Metabo Starter
Builder and owner Gareth Evans

3 CYLINDER SMOKER…
HONDA’S NS400R
Glenn went along to have a sniff
around the Honda NS400R…
When we were at the Two-Stroke clubs day
at Redstar raceway a few weekends back, we
noticed a very neat Honda NSR 400. Turns out
that the bike belongs to two-stroke enthusiast
Robert Coutts. We caught up with him to have a
quick chat about the bike…
“It was actually a barn find”, he tells us. “I
thought that I had two complete stripped bikes,
so my intention was to build this one, as well
as a Rothmans version. As we got busy putting
it all together, I realised that we actually only
had a bike and a half. The costs and effort
involved in building two complete bikes was
just too much, so I focused on building this
one. Every part is original Honda. Right down to
the decals.”
We quizzed him on parts availability for this
bike…
“You won’t actually believe it…” He Says, “Parts
for these bikes are still available from Honda.”
That’s impressive.

And the end result is a beautiful, original old gal with
45000KM’s on the clock.
This was Hondas first Aluminium framed street
machine. It remains Hondas biggest capacity twostroke
street bike. Released in 1986, this remarkable
two stroke V3 Triple made 72bhp @ 9500 rpm, pretty
incredible for just a ‘Four Hundred’ and was of course
based on the Championship contender in the 500cc
Grand Prix class, ridden by Freddy Spencer amongst
others.
Although on the heavy side by today’s standards at
192kg, this machine, especially in its 500ccc form,
was quick enough to be fun, and with a chassis also
based on the successful Grand Prix machine handled
as well as anything at that time.
It still holds the honour of being the most powerful
400cc motorcycle ever produced, and with a genuine
210 KPH top speed, the fastest as well!
South African Specials:
A few South Africans wanted to race the NSR locally –
and that’s what makes these bikes so unique. Robert
is pretty sure that this is the bike that was raced by
Robbie Petersen…
The bikes arrived in boxes.
In standard form, the the 387cc stroker motor was too
big to qualify to compete in the SA championship. Listen
to this: Honda SA approached Honda Japan about
reducing the capacity in order to race the bike locally.
In order for the bike to be homologated to compete in
the then 550cc class – a minimum of 50 units was the
magic number. And guess what?
Honda did it. They made a series of 373cc motors
by reducing the bore by 1mm. The pistons used were
NS250 pistons. The airbox covers on our specials
were drilled as standard. This was allegedly done on
board the ship before they landed so that the modification
could not be contested as a local modification.
It was rumoured that the standard ignition was also
different to those used in rest of the world but there
was no obvious external difference so this is difficult
to verify. What is known is that there were special sets
of HRC ignition boxes floating around but as they were
illegal under the competition rules, they were never
officially acknowledged.
So that’s the story. The bike is ridden regularly and
Rob has no intention of selling it.
How cool is that?
Back in the day when men were men...
ZX10 CUP ROUND 2
Stunning Zwartkops Extreme Festival Suggests a
New dawn For SA Motorsport.
30 bikes on the line at the 2nd round of the
ZX10 cup…
By Neil Phillipson, Michele Lupini and others.
Pics by Neil.
A perfect day’s National Extreme Festival racing not only delivered
spectacular action across all classes at Zwartkops on Saturday. The
Pretoria race day also more than just hinted to a splendid new dawn for
South African motorsport as young drivers came to the fore in most of
the premier categories.
An emotional Graeme van Breda dedicated his double Sunbet ZX10
Masters Cup victory to his recently passed dad, former SA motorcycle
racing legend Les. He beat Ronald Slamet, Trevor Westman, Jayson
Lamb, Brain Bontekoning, Michael Smit, David Enticott and Sanjiv Singh
to a most popular victory in a packed 30-bike field.
It was a great day of racing for motorcycles, with a jam-packed starter
grid. In fact, this is the largest lineup of bikes in the ZX10 cup for more
than a year – and indications are that it will sustain.
In Race 1 van Breda was overtaken by Slamet who led for a few laps,
before Van Breda opened the throttle and took him a few laps before the
end. Exciting racing, the crowd loved it!
And – for a change there was a decent crowd watching the fun. It’s
great to see all the petrol heads and their families out and about
enjoying the day.
Race two, Slamet was in the lead when the race was interrupted thanks
to a crash, but once the rider was up and about and the track was
cleared, fierce racing resumed, with Van Breda taking the double…
The rest of the pack spread out and there were individual dices
throughout the day of racing. Entertaining, exactly what this sport
needs.
And it was not only the bikes that made it fun, the cars put on a great
show!

If you are ever at a loose end and are tired of
watching reruns on TV, do some homework and go
and support the local racing. It’s always lekker!
Racing on a Budget
Racing on a Budget
Words: Hanri Oberholzer
Pics: Eugene Liebenberg
It’s a new year and we are hearing all about
interesting racing series starting up here
and there and one that really caught our
attention is the BRM series at Midvaal
Raceway out in the Vaal Triangle. A budget
racing series for the whole family, we got
hold of them via photographer Eugene
Liebenberg and they sent us a little bit of
information on the series… and it sounds
absolutely fantastic to us. The series is still
quite young and quite small, but we will
follow it and bring you regular updates on
the racing and the results and etc.
On Saturday 5 March 2022, Round 2 of the
Budget Racing Midvaal Series took place at
Midvaal Raceway. The BRM Bikes consist of
2 classes. The Half Litre class, (Sub 500cc),
with a break out time of 1.25 per lap and
then the Open class. The Half Litre class
is technically the feeder class for the Open
Class, there to promote the sport, get new
racers onboard, gain confidence, race craft,
experience and ultimately to have fun and to
move on to the next level of racing.
Safety first, all the bikes competing undergo
scrutineering before riders briefing. The
series is based on handicap racing, so the
slower riders start in front and the faster
riders at the back. Races consist of 6 laps
per race, so it’s fair to everyone and the
whole pack should cross the line at the
same time at the end.
Race days take place once a month, usually
the first Saturday of the month. On Race day
we have free practice, qualifier and 3 races,
great value for money and a huge amount
of fun for the racers, support teams and
spectators alike.
Entry fees are R600 per rider to club
members and R850 to non-members.
BRM Members also participate in a
championship for the year, points based
per race. Membership fees are R500 per
individual or R600 per family per annum. We
also have discounted rates on practice days
for members.
Sponsors make Race Days possible and
without these people this would not be
possible and we would like to say a big
Thank you to the following people for
supporting this series:
Stoosing
a BMW R18

The R18 - rocking a 1800cc power plant - is the relatively new addition
to the BMW range. A couple of months ago, the guys at Stoos Customs
had the privilege of customising the R18 into their own version. The
client initially sent the bike to Stoos for minor modifications, but after it
arrived at the work shop the ideas and inspiration started flowing. After
discussing with the client some of the ideas and the potential his new
ride holds, he was immediately on board.
As the R18 was brand new to the market then, there was nothing
available for it to give it a unique touch. This just added more fuel to the
fire of inspiration to create something really special. Starting from the
front of the bike, a carbon wheel from BST was fitted, which included
Arleness floating discs and they also bolted on their designed hubs with
a clean hugger front fender. The bars were manufactured out of 32mm
stainless tubing to house all the wiring and hydraulic lines to maintain
that brutal simplicity. The speedo housing was relocated into the tank
with a flush mounted fuel cap and to incorporate the front carbon wheel
into the build and tie it in with other parts, a company in Somerset West
called Advanced Fibre Form manufactured the carbon fibre intake and
tappet covers.
The roar out of this beast is like no other. The headers were
manufactured out of 316 stainless pie cuts and tin welded and the
mufflers were hand rolled out of aluminium, finishing them off with billet
machined end caps.
The seat base plate and pillion mount was machined out of a block of
aluminium with a hidden mounting point under the riders seat so you
are able to bolt on a pillion seat. The pillion and riders seat were hand
stitched and upholstered by Daniel at Dead Crow.
The biggest challenge was the rear wheel. Stoos Customs ordered a
wheel blank and had to designed and manufacture billet hubs and cush
drive assembly. The 200 rear wheel was also finished off with a hugger
rear fender with hidden mounting points and all the lights were incorporated
into the swing arm for the final touch.
This really was an awesome build to take on and at this time, there are
not too many bike builders around the world that have had the opportunity
to disassemble a brand new bike on the market down to its bare
bones and redesign/ assemble to the builder’s imagination.
