Handling is really superb for a longer wheel base sports tourer type bike,
I was expecting the bike to be a little bit cumbersome dodging traffic but
actually found her quite nimble and very responsive on the throttle in
any gear. The torque is perfect for plodding along at ‘legal’ speeds, but
get the SX over 6,000rpm and it really comes alive, blurring the scenery
around you and howling like some otherworldly demon. Tilting into
Gilooly’s during evening rush hour some Tosser in a car was so focused
on his cell phone that he drifted right across the lanes nearly wiping me
out into one of those scary looking cable barriers. I didn’t have time to
hit the hooter and started revving like a maniac, the useless chop nearly
jumped into his passenger seat as he swerved back into his own lane,
so even though the 1000SX is quiet and polite most of the time it can
get quite loud and angry… which possibly saved my life.
Now, having jumped off an adventure bike and still in my adventure kit,
boots and helmets included I was fully expecting my chunky off road
boots to be a hinderance on the brake pedal and gear lever and my
peaked helmet to fatigue my neck. In both instances I was pleasantly
surprised, there was plenty of space in and around the levers for my
boots and easy, comfortable and precise operation and the wind protection
from the fairing and small screen negated my concerns about
my adventure lid and the wind, so much so that I eventually tucked in
behind the screen and pushed hard toward the tunnel interchange from
the R59 onto the N12. Tilting hard into the fluorescent lit tunnel at twilight
at speed and dodging tail lights on this bike should have been a bit
sphincter tightening, but the SX is just that well balanced, smooth and
stable that I actually started getting really irresponsible in the traffic and
had to quickly dial it back a notch or two before I made kak that even
the SX couldn’t help me out of.
I do think we need to hang onto this bike for a few more weeks… you
know, just to really make sure it is as good as we think it is.
