covers, by Benjamin Gignac,<br />

engraved with tarms of Sherlock<br />

impaling Fontayne, for Thomas<br />

Sherlock (1678-1761), Bishop<br />

of London, Master of the Temple<br />

and for his wife Judith, daughter<br />

of Thomas Fontayne of the<br />

Meltoopn on the Hill, Yorkshire<br />

and decorated with acanthus leaf<br />

and foliate motifs, the covers with<br />

a fruiting pineapple finial, London,<br />

1746/7/8, height 22.3cm, 57oz.<br />

This pair of cups were presented<br />

to Thomas Sherlock in 1748 when<br />

he was elevated to the Bishopric<br />

of London. Provenance: Thomas<br />
