FROM THE TOUCHLINE
I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to The
Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club this
afternoon for our game against Hunslet Warriors in the
National Conference League Division Two.
We welcome the players, supporters and committee of Hunslet to Woolston and hope
that they have had a safe journey across town and enjoy our hospitality today.
This week we lost and absolute club LEGEND with the sad passing of our Club President
Harry Crank. Harry was a stalwart of this club from its inception in 1959 and his
memory will live on forever. He has been a massive part of my life for over 50 years
and I know that my dad (Warren Whalley) and Harry were inseparable down at the
club; wherever you saw Harry then my dad wasn’t far away. A true friendship that could
not be bettered and he will leave a huge hole in my dad’s life. Elsewhere in the programme
there is a fitting tribute to Harry from our current Club Chairman Steve Moore
and I know that the words that he has spoken are echoed by everybody at Woolston.
God bless you Harry and thank you for everything. Harry’s passing is on the back of us
also losing club stalwart Derek Bailey, Stewart Jones and Brian Heesom recently. All of
their families and friends are in thoughts.
Following consultation with Harry’s family there will be a minute’s applause held at all
Woolston Rovers games this weekend as a mark of respect for our club legend. There
will of course be a fitting tribute and a lasting memory in Harry’s name announced in
the very near future.
Today’s game is our annual Sponsors Day and Past Players’ Reunion and we are
delighted to welcome our generous sponsors and many past players’ from each era
since we were formed and we hope that you all have an enjoyable afternoon with us.
The planned Race Night this evening has been postponed and will now take place on
Saturday 16th July following our home game with Bradford Dudley Hill.
The game against Hunslet promises to be an absolute cracker; we drew 19-19 at their
place in April and I am sure that today will be another closely fought game. Hopefully
from a Woolston perspective we can claim the two league points to keep us in touch
with the teams above us. It really is an exciting league this season.
You will see further in the programme the fixtures for our Junior teams who play tomorrow.
We have plenty of excellent players (and coaches) within our Junior ranks so if
you have a spare hour or two in the morning please try and get along and show them
your support, either here at Monks’/Hillock Lane or in one of the away games.
Thanks for your attendance today and we hope to see you again very soon. Why not
bring a friend along with you next time and introduce them to the Rovers!!!
Enjoy the game
